Dracula
(2020)

Good Dracula story but... I have mixed feelings toward it!
This is one of the few titles that get me confused whether I liked it or not!!.. maybe because it got divided into long thirds (3 episodes) with some different exploring adventures with Dracula!!.. Dracula story is the most famous vampire story known to everyone even when it is vaguely understood. This TV series uses familiar characters in the original story but with some different take on them.

The first episode is about an hour and a half long with a very very interesting Dracula reveal. The TV series staff really hit it right with the atmosphere, the acting, the music, the visual effects, and the creepiness. The two main characters to me in this episode are Dracula and sister Agatha while the supporting characters were Jonathan Harker and Mina. It is later known (at almost two thirds of the episode) that sister Agatha is actually from the same blood line as Van Helsing (probably it is meant to replace the character Prof. Abraham Van Helsing). Sister Agatha is shown to be a person of high intelligence who contemplates Dracula's nature and weaknesses (like how Prof. Abraham Van Helsing would do in such situation). As she was a nun, it was assumed her deep faith in higher power, but then it revealed that she is on the border in the matter of believe in God. Meeting Dracula and "experimenting" on him was the last straw to abandon her believes in higher power!

The second episode is also about 90 minutes and over 85% of the time is on board of the Russian ship Demeter. Dracula wanted to re-locate.. to be near more people to feed from, so he went aboard the ship to travel from Transylvania to England.. The whole episode was like a murder mystery.. you know who is the killer but still you wanted the characters involved to figure it out. I can say, that it was an easy murder mystery because of some stupid moves. This episode was way less interesting than the first but the "new" characters were exciting and it was a chance to observe the powers of Dracula.

The third episode was the least favorite to me and it was also 90 minutes long.. it is set in modern day with again another set of "new" characters to continue the story of Dracula.. The episode wasn't necessary. Lot of time wasting in scenes that can be described in few minutes by fewer characters. It seems That the book have a side story that the series staff really really wanted to show but it looks that it might distract the attention a little in episodes 1 and 2 so they through it out to the end (in episode 3). I can't say it is bad, but it is really off for me specially with final scenes already make it hard to absorb the ideas clearly.. I am hesitating to say that the writers of this TV show want to push a single main idea using the Dracula story!

Anyway this TV series is good in overall and entertaining (all the episodes) but some episode can be more entertaining than the others depending on preferences of style and narrative.

Dark
(2017)

One of the best time travel TV series so far
The first time I watched this TV series I was prepared for a simple and straight forward time travel story that involves 1-3 characters only BUT I was wrong.. I almost gave up on this TV series because of the many characters involved and the very very slow burn and slow unravel of the mystery. I am glad that I didn't gave up on it and found by the help of many people guides to the family trees involved in this TV series. I watched seasons 1 and 2 and I can say that both are great. Season 1 is slow pacing rising dozen of questions compared to season 2 which is little of faster pacing and it answered lot of those questions but raised another dozen of questions. I have to say that the acting wasn't that appealing from most of the acting staff as I found some reactions were little "cold" but I got used to it.. the most important is the core ideas that the TV series staff invested in and they did not depend on the love for the characters.. which is something very rare I find. All of the characters were in the past, present, and in the future through the episodes whether naturally (through the nature time course) or artificially (through time travel).. Once I finished season 2 my mind recalled the time travel concepts in terminator, predestination, and triangle movies. This movie needs patience and a notebook to write names and events.. after I finished season 1 I enjoyed the challenge that it gave me to keep up with it and season 2 really wasn't beneath season 1 in quality and challenge.

Fractured
(2019)

You might know what is happening!
My first thought after the fall of the child was that the father have a mental problematic behavior but then other scenes and behaviors rises a suspicion of other reasons on why the daughter and mother are missing! ..This movie confused my original thought on what was happened.. it is not mind bending but confusing with the many ideas a little. The movie shows mostly everything needed to come with the correct conclusion before they spell it out at the very end.

The father imagined everything happened after his daughter fill down.. what we saw later after the daughter fall was real places and real people but the events were fabricated by his mind. I wanted to know how the movie will end and it really ended with a shock.

The Unseen
(2016)

It is a social drama movie
The movie concentrate on family drama and a struggling father connecting with his only child. The bonus part is the "invincibility" of the father. The father is getting invisible by vanishing little by little (by the last third of the movie it showed that the invincibility is a genetic condition that is passed from generation to generation). The acting is mediocre by the majority of the acting staff, the story is slow paced, some scenes were unnecessary or at least could be wrapped quicker. The CGI is good. I enjoyed the movie in overall for the emotional impact that left me with and making the invincibility condition a mystery that of no need to ravel.

The Great Wall
(2016)

Straightforward Plot for an action movie
It is an enjoyable action movie and not bad as I thought. It does not waste time and explains almost everything to the viewer. Visuals were fine in general (I did see poor visual effects in few scenes). The action scenes were good (I can say sometimes I felt they were exaggerated). The plot direction is predictable. I felt by the end of this movie that William (played by Matt Damon) overshadowed everyone in this movie (even the creatures!!) and he (I mean William) is the savior in this story!!

You can skip watching this movie easily but it is enjoyable when you have to watch an action movie with a group of friends and family!

Brightburn
(2019)

Just a regular horror movie!
The movie main character (the little boy) had an origin of huge resemblance to a very known fictional superhero (superman). Brandon Breyer played by the child actor Jackson A. Dunn have cold looks and reactions in most of his scenes to reflect the sinister vibe we must get from this child and in opposite to what we know about the fictional superhero mentioned above. I already knew what the story is about from the trailer and I just wanted to know how they would deal or manage such threat. I felt after watching this movie that there were lot of things do not add up!.. The movie had a great potential to offer an idea of a threat and reasonable solutions.. but the movie presented for the majority of its time the threat and very little on what would be the reasonable solutions and reasons (the reason that was given in the movie on why the child went rogue is very simple!!).. So it became not more than a generic horror movie with the mild jump scares, the unusual bad luck, and the unnecessary oblivion. The concept idea presented in the trailer was horrifying enough and did not need the creepy child scenes. The ending was not shocking at all as the movie showed us that the child is a psychopath with superpowers.. how a human would face a super powered psychopath?

Broadchurch
(2013)

Small town murder mystery
This TV show promoted as a murder mystery of a young boy in small town of Broadchurch.. and that what you get a very nice mystery that does not get you dragged to show case the lives of the characters for the sake of extending the time of each episode. You will feel that every moment spent of season 1 is worth the time. I recommend watching season 1 strongly while seasons 2 and 3 are not quit strong as season 1. Season 3 is my least favorite.

The cast choices was good and the characters behavior was understood for season 1 and then in season 2 the characters started to behave differently even though you may want to think that they grow out of their previous "ways" but some times you can't brush out how slightly different they are in season 2. In season 2 you can have a conclusion of what happened in season 1 and should have stopped there but they included a side story (they hinted in season 1) which took away some attention that is supposed to be invested for the main story line. I have to give season 2 one advantage that they got a very good new cast.

Black Mirror: Smithereens
(2019)
Episode 2, Season 5

The episode screams the meaning of (Black Mirror) TV series
I have to say it is not the best episode in my opinion but one of the best episodes. The messages that (black mirror) TV series are supposed to be a very well known to fans of the show.. the beauty of this episode is that it screams the meaning of show but very few heard it!.. When you watch it expecting fast-paced action and events, you will be disappointed.. the episode have a slow paced event that would grab the attention of the viewer up to the end (which is not clear!). I felt off after watching the episode as it was emotional and the main actors really pulled it up.

Recommend this episode definitely.

When They See Us
(2019)

It pulls you into watching it emotionally
The TV mini-series started at the day the assault happened with briefly showing the 5 kids through their normal day.. then at night everything went downhill once the police discovered that there was an assault that occurred and happened around the place of those kids.. the TV series concentrate on those kids and their struggle when the justice system pointed to them with guilt for the assault. It can be easily seen that there were few characters shown as bad guys for their bad behavior and judgment.. it was very easy to figure who is the good and who is the bad in this TV series. There were few things happened in the series that show a biased story telling.

The TV series done it right to make heart get pulled out of chest for those kids. The cast choice was good, the plot was good, the visual direction was good.. timing was perfect with sound and dialogue.. the sum of all that (and maybe few others too!) gave me that emotional pull to like this TV mini-series.

Nightworld: 30 Years to Life
(1998)

Good idea excuted in the most expected path
The writing where it got to introduce the process of how the main character got where he is now as an adult (what was and how it became) is good.. not too long and not too short and laid all the necessary information.. after that what got happened in the movie is enjoyable and very predictable. I watched the movie in 2019 and it was interesting to see how they imagined the future.

The idea introduced is worth thinking about.. what if the world replaces jail time by just aging up the person.. how that would be successful or failure.. by the way the answer won't be found in the movie!

I recommend watching this movie at least once for what it hold of an idea only.

Love, Death & Robots
(2019)

Few are hit and most are miss
I tried my best to watch all the short episodes back to back in one set as they were short (< 20 minutes/each) but still I couldn't as the ideas presented are scattered and alot of them were not new to me. From all the 18 episodes I watched from season 1, only fewer than 6 episodes were intellectually smart scripted (beside the eye catching visuals) and lot of sci-fi fans would appreciate them.. the rest were fun to watch but they were not interesting that much.

The episodes were like a playlist with the title "Love, Death & Robots" of short movies that are different in content but they fall in the titled category.

The episodes do not hold back on violence, gore, and nudity.. which make me feel that episodes are not concentrating on the ideas but on "showing" what they think the audience want to see.. A lot of episodes I thought of skipping but I didn't just to give a fair chance for the review.

Breaking Bad
(2008)

The perefect sequence
"Breaking Bad" is one of the best TV shows for multiple reasons but mainly is that it have the perfect sequence of events (even if they weren't planned ahead before pilot episode) and the well chosen cast. The flip in Walter's life is the one that is of importance here but still you have a ton a lot of characters that do not fade away (by feeling they are only tools to showcase Walter's behaviour) but instead you care for them as they are related to Walter White by a mean or another and can play considerable part in Walter's progress in this TV show. Walter White has always been "Heisenberg" but needed something to break the shell to fly out. Its never boring and you don't feel a scene or episode is wasted (in general).

The Haunting of Hill House
(2018)

A very long horror movie
This TV series remind me of movies like (The Amityville Horror movies and Conjuring movies).. The TV series was presented with typical elements from such movies (the old creepy house, the unexplained haunting moments..).. what is the difference between a movie of such style and this TV series is... the series took the time to present the lives of the involved characters and build up the fear so there will be less reliance on jump scares (I really really do not appreciate jump scares!).

What I found very attractive in this tv series are the sense of direction and style and the casting. The (horror-mystery) scripting of this TV series was good up to almost the fifth episode and then I lost interest in what was the mystery and focused on the characters which I wasn't disappointment with them. The ending wrapped so quickly for me (relative to the long show-case of characters lives) and some how the ending was expected!!

What I was excited for in this particular TV series is involving the time dimension to explain the presence of the haunting moments in a character's live.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
(2012)

How about an actual person being a vampire hunter?
Well.. I like the idea.. very intersting..but.. this movie presented the story in extremely rushed manner.. with so many characters that do not serve much to the plot.. and the main known events related to Abraham Lincoln were weaved with the vampires 'agenda'. Now.. what was so enjoyable in this movie?.. the action (even there was a scene that was ruined by very poor CGI).. it has a style (not unique but enjoyable).

War for the Planet of the Apes
(2017)

Superior Visuals
I can't watch this enjoyable movie without mentioning how amazing the CGI and the special effects.. for the story line it is expected some how but still enjoyable and I can re-watch it again.

When I watched this movie, I understood that time passed from the first movie and second movie of this series but it wasn't clear how long it passes.. this movie could be a step to explain a little why humans were captured in the original movie planet of the apes (1968).

The "war" is indeed for the "planet of the apes".

The Adjustment Bureau
(2011)

The adjustment team
"The adjustment team" is the title of a short story by the author Philip K. Dick.. science fiction story about a world where changes or adjustments in people's lives are made by a team called "the adjustment team".. There was an unfortunate one person who witnessed the change and promised to be kept unchanged only if he do not tell any one about what he saw.. so he tried to do so and "the adjustment team" helped him to keep him away from telling anybody about it.. the end

Now for this movie... the main core idea is there but with extension to what our protagonist is about, where substantial time spent to showcase his career life and his love life.. it is basically a romantic movie with a slight portion of science fiction and some thrill included.

The short story was good, straightforward, and into the point.. while this movie uses the main core idea from Philip K. Dick, it does not give the same satisfaction as the short story does.

Lady Bird
(2017)

A look at one teenage girl's life
The viewer will have a look on the life of a girl "lady bird" in a town called "Sacremento".. a teenage view on what is considered of value and importance in her life.. it is very sweet coming out of age movie.. the plot is straight forward, unique, and presented fairly the rebellion phase of teenagers such "lady bird".. I kept thinking about "lady bird" and how common her actions to me.. it is a family love story.

If you like boyhood movie then this movie is recommended!

The Sunset Limited
(2011)

A play between two men of opposite opinions
It is a long talk between Black (Samuel L. Jackson) and White (Tommy Lee Jones) in an apartment.. the viewer is just a listener to that long dialogue between the main characters. The dialogue started after Black, who seems to believe of higher power, saves White, who seems to believe of no higher power, from a suicide attempt.. Black brings White to his apartment to make sure he won't repeat the act again by arguing with him about the philosophy and meaning of life which really started so simple and direct but then things took a turn when Black looked like forcing White to "see" his point of views and White looked like he is completely unable to "see" anything else than his point of views.. The viewer watch two opposites argue about hope and despair.. existence and non-existence.. It is not about the actual argument between the two characters and who will win the argument.

Passengers
(2016)

Not usual romantic movie!
It is a very enjoyable movie for its visuals, designs, and the reasonable plot to present it for audience as a not a usual but yet sweet romantic movie in an unusual setting.. If you look at it with expectation of believable reason why such a situation started and how it got continued then you will absolutely will get frustrated (there are few reasons presented in this movie for why the situation exist and continued). There are few "adventures" scenes with nice visuals that can make this romantic movie little exciting... it is a romantic movie where couples can enjoy.

This movie presented an unusual situation, we set back and see what the characters do in that situation. There is no need to look at different ways to approach the situation and also no need to explore the reasons of such situation exist.. that is all.

The Big Lebowski
(1998)

Tangled Lebowski
A care-free, broke, and calm Lebowski (the dude) get tangled with The Big wealthy Lebowski.. this is the story!! but then many sides used or took advantage of the poor care-free Lebowski who have friends that less to be said they raise the flames of the already lighted fire! .. It is funny and at some points hilarious. I didn't get the purpose of the few characters in the movie but in overall the few main characters (dude and his friends) were funny in their way of looking at things!.. I can't say that I enjoyed the whole movie but I can say that there are very few scenes that worth saving for repeat watch!!

The Hateful Eight
(2015)

Long introduction then a mystery starts (for short time!)
I saw this movie recently after a recommendation.. I didn't know what is about except it is in the old west during winter with characters that seems to be rough!!

So.. Almost two third of the movie was an introduction to most of the characters.. some of them were little easy to understand or at least with obvious and clear intentions.. the others were not easy to pick up what their intentions.. that introduction was slow and detailed a little. Afterward things escalated for short time and then a slow reveal of a main mystery (that the viewer might not aware of!!) that used pieces of information that the viewer wasn't aware of as well or easy to miss in long dialogues.. at the end there was an extreme tension and the viewer will make speculations (even after the movie finishes!).

It is a enjoyable movie to watch (and hear!). The capture of the winter atmosphere was superb (but most of the scenes were inside a cabin).. and the main acting staff were a core attraction for this movie for their capabilities to show us the essence of the characters before the clear reveal of every one's intention. The plot wasn't hard to absorb but the long dialogues can make some viewers lose interest and focus as most of the fast and light action happen near the end of the movie!

The Grand Budapest Hotel
(2014)

Charming and entertaining
This movie is a story told by one of the fictional characters that is in a fictional country and lives in fictional hotel. The scenes were just jumps in the story but comes in the appropriate order.. The characters do not tell jokes BUT the ordinary and sometimes the not so ordinary behavior the characters do that make it funny along with the an unexpected sequence of events. This movie is so colorful with clear spoken language and shot in attractive way.

The Shape of Water
(2017)

A fairy tale for adults
A movie on a love story.. fairy tale "like" love story. Lot of things do not look logical but so in "fairy tales".

A creature of an unknown origin was found and transferred to a government owned facility where the protagonist "Elisa" work as a cleaner.. she got interested when her eyes fell on the new creature (like she do with many things she faced in her life as the movie shows). She wasn't shown as weak woman, but clever and innocent.. but even though it was shown also that women in the 60s are silenced in addition of her's. She has friends that also share with her the forced silence in community.. she recently meet a new friend that will join the group if she does not intervene, and that's what she did.. she did what it seems to be right.

I love the group of actors and actresses in this movie, they delivered a very realistic feeling (even though some actions were not realistic!). The set and the visuals effects were superb and these were the main attractions for this movie for me. I would say that the expected simple actions or responds were really absent from this movie..most of the characters surprise me with their responds except for (Sally Hawkins) and (Michael Stuhlbarg) where their characters showed reasonable responds to situations.

This movie reminds me of the fairy tale (the little mermaid) but with some twist (this twist won't be understood until the end of the movie!).

The Danish Girl
(2015)

The girl
I have to be honest, I do not know much about the identity struggle such the one "Einar Wegener" suffered from.. but I can get glimpse of what that struggle would be through this movie. I can imagine it was a hard time for such identity crisis to rise up .. but even though the movie showed that there were open minded people that can accept differences around the year 1900 even if these people were few .

(----------------This review has spoiler start here--------------)

At the beginning of this movie "Gerda Wegener" (wife of "Einar Wegener") who was shown to be more bold than her husband, asked her husband to pose for a portrait as a woman and at that moment "Einar" began to discover what is going on with "him".. the movie just present that self discovery and self awareness at the time where there were no one known before "him" struggle the same. It is a story of "Einar" getting bolder to be "Lili" in a hard period of time.. There were few wondering questions during and after the movie finishes.. probably they came up because I do not fully understand the transformation (was it physically, mentally, and emotionally at once!?).

It is a lovely movie to watch with parts of the true story of "Lili Elbe" who was bold enough to accept performing the first gender-change operation to be fully "her".

Ready Player One
(2018)

Pop Culture References Movie
What is fun about this movie?... the visuals and all the pop culture references.. you might will have the eager to re-watch just to catch what you missed the first time. The plot is not unique and few scenes were rushed, but the presentation is amazing. I didn't read the book but heard that it is different from this movie and I hope it gave more background story to the main characters as what was given in this movie was a shell for most characters. The main message that can be obtained from this movie is easily understood.

It is definitely worth the time for watching at least one time (maybe re-watching just to catch what you missed the first time you watched!).
