This is a prequel to Pet Sematary 1989/2019 and the fourth installment in the series. The story takes place 50 years before the events of its predecessor.
The makers really messed it up. Inspite of the story taking place before the events of the original, we ain't shown anything new. Audiences expected some backstory about the evil or some truly terrifying twist.
Nothing new is shown about the cemetery.
The backstory of the three friends is nada except for the photo.
The only good things are the locations, the sun soaked settings and for this and the dog attack scene i am generous with a 5.
Entire movie takes place during the daytime which is a good thing for me but unfortunately the makers were not able to create any tension n they totally neglected the atmosphere.
Most of the kills are also offscreen.
Pam Grier n David Duchovny are totally wasted.
Now some weird direction.
If a place or house is on fire why wud someone go into the cellar. The best option is to run out in the open.
Also we never get to see any fire.
A possessed/living dead fella is able to dug up so many tunnels.
He is able to put a landmine.
And coincidentally 3 different tunnels for three different people.
And why wud a possessed fella go thru the effort of making many tunnels.
Why wud a possessed fella go thru the effort of tying up a girl.
In the first movie, it's established that the character of Jud knew about the burial ground as a young boy, because he buried his dog there. Why in this movie as an adult he acted as if he didn't know anything about the burial ground.

The gore effects n Clancy Brown as the sadistic step father r the highlights.
I first saw this in the late 90s on a vhs.
Revisited it in 2019 on a dvd which I own. That was cos I wanted to watch the 2019 remake.
Posting a review now as I m planning to watch the third installment.
Nothing new with the plot. The cat gets replaced by a dog n the dead son gets replaced by the mother. Also the absurdity gets replaced by hilarious scenes, over the top acting by Brown n top notch gore effects.
The best part is that the kids in this movie bury Clancy Brown's character in the cursed Indian burial ground thats known for bringing fellas back from the dead. Now the character of Brown is a sadistic n intimidating one, imagine he coming back from the dead wreaking havoc.

I saw this for the first time last night n was completely blown away. Terrific character study n epitome of paranoia.
I got to know the demise of Gene Hackman thru Coventry's review on imdb. Not been watching news lately. May God bless his soul.
Gene Hackman was my grandfather's fav actor n I too became his fan after The French Connection, Unforgiven n The Quick n the Dead.
They say that this movie is inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up which I haven't seen.
The movie has Coppola's regulars like Cazale and Duvall in tiny roles.
Gene Hackman plays Harry Caul, a surveillance expert who is admired by his competitor but at the same time accused by the competitor that Harry's job was responsible for 3 deaths.
Harry has a habit of slowly unlocking the door n suddenly opening the door as if he wants to catch his girlfriend committing some kinda wrong stuff.
Harry refuses to tell his girlfriend and others any details about his life and he breaks up with his girlfriend when she insists on asking his personal details n reveals that she knows that Harry stands outside the door, slowly unlocking to check up on her. But his nimble as a ninja move turns to be ineffective.
He keeps his own door triple locked but again it's ineffective cos his landlady knows when his birthday is because she is able to steal his mail, and she is also able to open his door and leave him a bottle of wine as a gift.
All these things are full-blown security crisis - how did she get past the alarm? What bah the triple locks unlocking.
All these things makes Harry very paranoid.
His competitor is able to plant a bug on him by giving him a free pen and his client's secretary is able to get his unlisted phone number quite easily.
Also an unknown girl is able to rob him of his hard work.
