Dilemma
(1962)

refreshing and original British drama/suspense
This film isn't really a thriller, but it is successful in being a suspense filled drama. This film is actually quite a gem. The plot and entire pretext for the film are simple but takes a twist at the end which I don't think anybody could predict. The final explanation for the dead body in the end is not complex, but it is extremely clever and not cliched like 99.9% of big Hollywood blockbusters. It was actually a very refreshing modern ending, which I was not expecting considering the film was made in the early 1960s, this helps push the film above simply being a low-budget British affair.

The whole thing is shot in a believable and completely intruiging way, yes this film is simple, but that is what makes it so brilliant. It works because it is believable -he is an ordinary man, who lives in an ordinary house, not some mansion in Beverly Hills. The film is fuelled by suspense over what the schoolmaster is going to do with the body, all the more so because his nosey neighbour cannot stop interferring.

I found this film very similar to "The Nanny" starring Bette Davis, they are very similar in that they simply tell a story, without enormous complications and huge Hollywood overcomplicating budgets getting in the way. Some people will probably not enjoy it for it's simplicity, because they are so used to big budget blockbusters, but if your willing to give this film a try you will find it is actually extremely enjoyable. If it was available on VHS I would probably buy it. 10 out of 10.

Bird on a Wire
(1990)

Goldie gives a great performance
Goldie Hawn gives a performance which more than makes up for some of the short comings of this cliched comedy. Hawn is laugh out loud funny in this film as the spoiled lawyer for which she was perfectly cast, and it is one of the funniest roles I have seen her in. The scene where she is driving around using Mel Gibsons foot as the gas pedal is hilarious, and again when she is being chased by chimps, I found myself in hysterics. Surprising, considering I'm not usually a fan of this kind of comedy.

Sometimes the laughs are few and far between, and this is pretty much your average run of the mill film where someone is on the run to prove their innocence, despite this there is something endearing about it. There is no doubt Goldie is that endearing quality, backed up by Gibson, who to his credit gives a good performance, and a script which is relatively original. If your fan of Ms Hawn, or if your just looking for a laugh without much thought then I would recommend this film. 8 out of 10

So Goes My Love
(1946)

good for passing time without thinking
There isn't much of a plot, this film just recounts the trials and tribulations of a gold-digging women who falls for a unusual inventor (who isn't that rich) - but they get married anyway. This isn't a bad film, it just isn't anything spectacular, sometimes it does feel like it isn't going anywhere. That is probably because it isn't actually going anywhere...not that it doesn't make it enjoyable. Maybe it was funny in 1946 - it certainly isn't funny now - but if it's being repeated on television it is good to pass a few hours immersing yourself in this tale. Like many films of this time, it is probably just worth watching it for the interesting old sets.

Nuts
(1987)

a stunning accomplishment
Even by her own standards Streisand gives an extremely accomplished performance as does Richard Dreyfuss. Her performance is made even more captivating by the fact she is clearly relishing the gritty role of Claudia. This is the sort of film you watch and will enjoy for the superb acting.
