Revenge of the Stolen Stars
(1986)

Super enjoyable and unique.
I wasn't expecting much from looking at the reviews here, but the preview was cool so I went ahead and bought the VHS for a cheap price. This turned out to be fun from start to finish. The only negatives are that some of the coolest characters kept dying or only appearing for short scenes and the movie itself was too short. It left me wanting more of the strangeness. The main actor and actress were likeable and corny. The setting was great. The gore was not gross, but just funny. It had bit of an Indiana Jones vibe, but still isn't really a kids movie. Anyway, this needs some positive reviews. Definitely a movie for me to enjoy again and again. Thank you Ulli Lommel for directing this unique piece of art.

The Demons of Ludlow
(1983)

Ludlow
I think this is the fifth time or so to watch this one. I have it on VHS and it was one of the first really bad movies I got for VHS. It is really bad but kind of like in a Carnival of Souls way. That one is a few steps better than this one in entertainment, but this on has it's endearing qualities as well.

I like the quirky direction and horrific lighting. I like the effective music. I like the cheap special effects. I like the actors and characters. I love the fun and sometimes even scary tone. It is a bit dragging at times, but the finale is good.

Anyway, Ludlow is becoming a regular place for me to visit..

Squillo
(1996)

not bad
This had some terrible acting and lots of unbelievable happenings yet was still a very watchable movie. Good if you just turn your brain off and watch the pretty people and Italian scenery.

There was also a bit of suspense and the story wrapped up nicely I thought.

Screaming Fields of Sonic Love
(1995)

His sister came over she was out of her mind. She said
Had a twin who knew nothing about sin. She was laughing

// So this vhs tape has a bunch of older Sonic Youth music videos. It's great stuff, and I am wearing it out...

Inner Sanctum
(1991)

Very entertaining and Tanya Roberts!
This turned out to be a corny, well shot, artistically lit, and very entertaining film. Certainly worth tracking down for Tanya Roberts fans.

Circulez y a rien à voir!
(1983)

Fun
This movie has a very funny and interesting idea. A dorky police man becomes obsessed with a pretty lady and lots of comedy ensues. Oh and Jane Birken is lovely.

I really enjoyed watching this one.

The Happiest Millionaire
(1967)

Great film
So a lot of negative reviews and they mostly are just claiming that the movie is too long or that it isn't as good as Mary Poppins. As for being too long, there are lots of long musical movies and they take a very different approach in order to enjoy them.. you have to kick back and relax and just enjoy the movie. This one is a fun world to enter into with like-able characters and interesting songs. As far as not being as good as Mary Poppins, that is a high bar to get over.. I would say Mary Poppins is one of the most memorable movies ever made. If you are going to expect every movie in the same genre to be as good as it, you wont get very far..

Lesley Anne Warren as the daughter of the family steals the show (like she does in most films). Also Tommy Steele as the butler gives the movie some Disney charm. The music is okay. I like the Fortuosity song very much, but of course this isn't Mary Poppins. Ultimately this is a great movie to see and I think most everyone should find much to enjoy in it.

Killer Deal
(1999)

Okay little TV thriller.
Enjoyable little thriller. Udo Kier isn't really in it at all, but that's fine. He's old and is more of an icon. The story, though unbelievable, is very interesting. There are also quite a few pretty girls that make watching it fun. I would say this one isn't bad, though not outstanding enough to really be highly recommended.

Robot Holocaust
(1987)

Hard to explain
But this is one of those rare movies that just clicks right. Stick the tape in the VHS, turn the volume off, turn on some BGM ambient music, and enjoy. The movie pulls you in with the good-looking actors all walking through the park in costumes looking serious.. Then there are knife fights, robots, alien monsters, and strange sets that look very cheap. Lots of fun and a special find in my opinion.

Return Fire
(1988)

It's a jem of a vhs era action film.
This one is really a hypnotic watch.

The way the action scenes are directed is great fun. You will have a shot fired and then a guy goes "ugh" and falls back with blood splurting from his shirt. It's just insanely fun to watch.

The very old school style of music takes you back to the old Disney films from the seventies and eighties. The story and actors are all fine. The lead character (Ron Marchini) is a likeable enough star. There are pretty girls and bad bad guys as well.

This one is a gem of a find for vintage movie fans.

Dance Macabre
(1992)

Ballerina bmovie horror, no Phantom of the Opera 2.
If you are into this kind of film, then this is a great one. I very much enjoyed it.

The girl who played Jessica was pretty. Robert Englund is always an awesome villain. The setting was nice. Pretty much ballet and slasher movies are a perfect combination. Also cheesy 80's, early 90's slasher movies are mostly fun and this one has that feel.

The movie had glaring weaknesses too-- The original plan of being Phantom of the Opera 2 shows you that there is some problems with the script. There is no opera in this movie at all. Robert Englund's dual character who is revealed at the end is just too obvious and makes the movie silly. There is no gore, so don't get this expecting anything like that.

Still, this is a worthy addition to a VHS collection if you are into this kind of film. I liked it alot.

That's Life!
(1986)

Worth a watch
There was some entertainment to be found and some amusing things happened.

The characters were not overly like-able.. They were just living the American Dream and forgetting to be thankful. Just shows that even the American Dream is hollow in the eternal perspective. I would say we are all the same boat; we forget to focus on the positive things and be thankful. It also really showed how having a good conscience is very important.

Certainly not a great movie, but amusing enough and I thought I learned something from the movie.

The Magic Toyshop
(1987)

Unique, beautiful, far from comfortable.
The best thing about this movie is the soundtrack.. It is just epic.

The movie itself has a great setting and great feeling as well. It is difficult to categorize and I would say it is a fantasy; yet it is not a very comfortable movie and has nudity and adult situations. At times the cruelty and sad situations almost make it a horror film. At the same time it doesn't necessarily feel like a horror film either.

The protagonist is a young girl around 16 who, because of the death of her parents, goes to her uncles home with her siblings. Her uncle is a toy-maker and a cruel man. The movie has some strange relationships and abuses going on. We notice all of this is happening while we are showered with fantastic, dreamy images and scenes including puppet shows, dances, animal costumes in gardens etc.

Caroline Milmoe who plays the main character is very lovely and does a great job. The different dresses she wears are kind of reminiscent of ballerina/ wedding dresses and add to the feel.

I very much recommend getting your hands on this movie if you are a fan of fantasy films or even horror movies like Argento's Suspiria or The Shining.

...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà
(1981)

This movie is art
I have seen this movie many, many times now. I am careful when I watch it because of how dark and powerful it is. Maybe not a good one to watch before going to work in the morning.

This movie has a feel to it that is just magical. The muted blue colors and the murky Louisiana setting and the yellow eyes create a fever dream that can stay with you for a long time. At the least it is an uncomfortably beautiful experience. A nightmare..

There are similarities to another classic "Suspiria" especially in the way the music creates atmosphere and mood. If you don't enjoy horror for it's mood and for it's color and settings, then maybe this movie will come off as boring. I was shocked by the amount of negative reviews, but I guess I can understand someone not liking the blues and yellows so much as Suspiria's reds and greens. Maybe the dubbing and such turns people off.. I would also rate Suspiria as better than this one, but they are both amazing and classic.

The gore is over the top at times as well, but it isn't grossly uncomfortable in my opinion. I try not to be a gore hound, and stay away from movies that are only gore for the sake of gore. This one seems to use the gore more as an addition to the uncomfortable mood..

The actresses and actors are also perfect for their parts. Catriona MacColl even gives me a Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive vibe.

Le porte del silenzio
(1991)

Atmospheric and moody Fulci film.
This is a film set in Louisiana just like The Beyond. Though if you like Fulci movies because of the gore, this one has pretty much no gore. The viewer is taken on a confusing ride with John Savage who plays a guy driving around and having some car trouble. He encounters different beautiful women and troubles in an attempt to get some place which we aren't exactly certain where.

I have noticed Fulci often uses shiny metal to create an effect. This was done quite often in this one. Enjoyable, cheap, and stylish film if you are in the right mood.

Dr. M
(1990)

Thoughts after 2nd viewing.
The only negative I can come up with on this is that it is kind of slow. I felt the cheapness just adds to the charm. Should be watched on VHS for best effect.

The actors are good all across the board. Jennifer Beals is a beauty. The mood is depressive and dark with nice music. The location and feel of the architecture and settings are so very cool. Kind of a state controlled European feel going on. The story is interesting and thoughtful. I thought the scenes all fit together in a great way with the sounds and such making this one really great. The repetition of seeing screens of Beals face talking about time all through the film makes it a very trippy, cool film.

I will be watching this one over and over. Awesome film!

The Royal Ballet
(1960)

Awesome & Beautiful.
I have this on VHS and it never fails to create fantastic mood. It has a vintage style about it that you wont get from a modern ballet video. The sets and dancers are artistic and amazing. It has great color and lighting mixed with a beautiful fantasy mood

Included are small excerpts from Swan Lake, long parts of The Firebird, and then most all of Ondine. Good choices. Over 2 hours of beautiful bliss.

Wheels of Terror
(1990)

Not a lot of positive here.
The evil car was cool.

The camera work and scenery was also fine except for the excess amount of slow-motion during the big scenes and a bunch of "how in the world!" things happening.

But overall the movie was tackling a very sick, serious subject in a trifling and unbelievable manner. It made the film a hard one to stomach.

I kept expecting a plot twist ending which would have made the film better in which the mother driving the school bus was actually just imagining the car the whole time. She was really crazy and murdering the kids. No other person in the movie could actually see the car except her anyway. We also never see or have any idea who the driver of the car was. This could have been done to great effect. Finding out it was actually her bus which ran over the policeman etc.

Sadly this unique twist never takes place and the movie is pretty much a waste of time about a very serious situation but done terribly.

There were a few laughs to be found in the explosion ending, so do at least stick with it till the end.

Sabbath: La máscara del demonio
(1989)
Episode 4, Season 1

Great atmosphere and sets.
Being that I love older horror, I have been doing my best to get my hands on as much of it as I can. The Demons series is interesting and always seems to be crazy. Good music and suspense in many of them. As of now, I think this one is my favorite of the series due to the atmosphere and sets. Demons 3 -The Ogre is also one I need to re-watch because the music was really awesome in that one..

Anyway, in this film, the ice caves with colored lights and the snowy abandoned town areas and church are all very beautiful. It also has lots of beautiful women and good, subtle music. The audio is in Italian and of course the characters are mostly just overacting.

I first watched this one on youtube with super low quality video and English subtitles. I thought it was good but knew it was a keeper when I couldn't get the dreamy feel and atmosphere out of my head. I started looking for a VHS copy and I finally got one for a nice price and watched it again today.

I understand some of the reviewers calling it slow because there is very little blood or gore compared to the other films in the Demons series. It also doesn't have much sense to it. It is kind of a nightmare about witches. At times it feel like more of a fantasy film than a horror film. It also kind of reminded me of the fantasy movie "Legend" at times because of the snow scenes and ambient music.

Certainly a movie that fans of old horror should enjoy!

Amoureuse
(1992)

lover/ Amoureuse/ aisaresugite
I got the Japanese VHS of this not knowing much about it. I couldn't find any info or English reviews about it so I figured it was probably forgotten for a reason. Still, since I have enjoyed some of the other French Charlotte Gainsbourg movies and since it was cheap, I though I would give it a watch.

The story was about Charlotte's character and her problems with two guys. She is living with a guy but has dinner with another guy who tells her that he is in love with her and kisses her. Then she tells her boyfriend about it and he gets jealous. The guys are obsessed with her and she is always obsessed with having them be obsessed over her. The characters are immature and not likable but it is still interesting and somewhat believable.

Charlotte Gainsbourg was on the screen 99percent of the time and she is stunning. The two male actors do a fine job as well.

The directing is in your face. A depressing color is in the air. The locations are claustrophobic and a lot of scenes take place in dull apartments. There is a lot of nudity, sexual tension, and long conversations. It is very much a French movie about unfaithful lovers in the early 90s. Charlotte Gainsbourg makes it very recommendable.

The Clown at Midnight
(1998)

Not very good overall but with a few moments.
I am a fan of horror films and so when I found this on vhs and saw the relatively high rating here(6,2), I was quick to get it.

The problem with the movie is it just goes over the top with corniness. The first hour is really bad, as we get to know all the cliched characters. The sex scene/ sword fighting sequence was so so awful that I almost quit watching the movie. Anyway, things were getting so bad I decided to write a review and give it a super low rating. Then, once the clown murders got going it actually had some good moments and made me have to admit it's worth seeing. Certainly never actually gets scary or intense, but at least it got interesting.

So go ahead and see it, but I would much more recommend the giallo Aquarius (1987) or even the movie Popcorn(1991). Both of these slasher films also take place in a theater setting and are much better.

The Mummy Theme Park
(2000)

Something charming about the cheapness
I don't really understand why people give this one a 1 star rating. It is certainly a low, low budget cheesy movie, but that can be enjoyed if you are expecting it.

The mummy theme park idea is certainly entertaining enough. The main character is a camera man and the actress who plays his assistant is pretty. There are some mummy monsters but they are all just fake and not at all scary.

The camerawork has a 3D feel to it using the sets and the screens to give a pretty interesting look to the whole film. It is certainly a cheap look, but it kind of draws you in. The colorful (very, very fake) sets are amusing - sometimes the walls look like cardboard stages. I really like movies that create their own sets and worlds. This one does it to the extreme though very cheaply.

The fake looking costumes and mummies are so bad that they become fun as well. Overall not a bad way to spend your time if you are looking for something different and creative for eye candy.

On the negative side, there is no suspense or sense overall. All of the acting is over the top and terrible as well, but again that can be part of the charm and entertainment.

Village of the Damned
(1995)

Not scary or stylistic enough
I have not seen the original but this one is just a very average film. I really appreciate John Carpenter's directional style, and his direction does make this at least interesting to watch as a fan. Yet, this one is low on style or scares. When he does take the music and style to a high level the movie is certainly best in those scenes. I wish he had spent more time on the style parts of the film and made this a more trademark Carpenter horror film.

The actors are also fine but not great. Reeves does a nice job and I also enjoyed Mark Hamill as the priest, but there just aren't any excellent or extremely likable characters to feel for or care about. The children are also not scary, but just strange and uncomfortable. Not a great movie, but worth a watch or two.

Popeye
(1980)

I also put my vote in for this being a masterpiece.
This movie is its own very quirky yet fun world. The set is awesome. It looks like they created their own amusement park to film in. It is all made before digital octopuses or fake digital worlds, so that is also much more pleasing to the eye.

You get to enter into the set and join the actors who are totally giving their all to their roles. The voyeuristic feel is certainly an Altman movie characteristic and it blends well with the cartoon feel.

Robin Williams is great. No one else can do what he does in his roles, and this one is no exception. I also really enjoyed watching Shelly Duvall almost more than Robin Williams. The other actors were also totally given to their roles and to making the very strange world come to life. The music was mesmerizing as well.

I saw this a few times when I was a kid, so that may have helped me enjoy it. But I am going to be watching this tons more in the future. Masterpiece.

Amityville 1992: It's About Time
(1992)

Really good b horror with some dreamy scenes
This movie is about a clock that is haunted and evil. It messes with reality and time, cursing the people in a house.

A great soundtrack and some really memorable scenes. The actors and story keep the film from dragging. Shawn Weatherly is attractive and a good leading lady.

If the film had been a little darker and scarier that could have made it even better, but certainly a good one to grab up and add to your vhs collection.
