Whiteboyz
(1999)

One of the best average movies ive seen
It took me a few days of flipping past this movie before I finally convinced myself to see what it was about, but I was surprised to find that it was actually entertaining. Whiteboys looks into the lives of farmtown white kids obsessed with black "gangsta" rap and the lifestyle that seems to surround it. This movie is filled with funny moments but also has some pretty serious moments. As I read the other comments, I noticed the main people offended was from Iowa, and everyone else just had something go over their head. I can say that even though I've never met any white boys this stupid, it is some wannabees out there who may have saw this movie and saw themselves a little bit. I found it funny the way they saw Khalid because I see that happen all the time. I can't tell you how many times someone has came to me assuming that I automatically know where to get drugs from. On the flip side, it is also some black kids in suburbia who idolize a thug lifestyle and wish to try to live it out, too. So really it not so much about race as it is dealing with growing up, coming of age, and finding yourself and all those things. Oh yeah, you can throw in rebelling from your parents, too. It was intersesting to see how the characters had changed by the end of the movie. I guess I'm done rambling now, but this is definitely worth renting when you've ran out of big name moives to rent, personally I'd buy the DVD but wouldn't spend more that $15 to buy it.

Kids
(1995)

I could be one of your kids....
One of my all-time favorite movies, Kids will have you saying to yourself: "dang, this is the stuff that goes on in real life?" It might also make you ask yourself: "Are all these actors over 18 cuz I'd swear some scenes made me feel like I was watching illegal kiddie stuff." This movie is REAL, like it or not. The actors dialouges were as if they really knew what they were talking about (such as the girls talking about sex). I've read alot of comments saying that this movie ain't real, its not a true depiction of the youth, it don't happen in my city, you midwesterners need to be for real, bla bla bla. Well yeah I'm coming out of Memphis so what? Put things in perspective. All movies will sensationalize things a little bit. But on a basic sense, all the things in this movie are played out everyday by somebody's kids. "Kids," is just the worst-case-scenario. We talked about sexual encounters at 12 and 13 in school and by the ninth grade, we were out there trying to score. AIDS is a reality in high schools all over America today. Same thing with marijuana. The adolescent years are prime for drug introduction, with a few regular users. Also, some children just recently ganged up on a grown man and beat him to death in Chicago (I think thats where it was). Watch the news and tell me this type of shhh don't happen everyday. BTW, somebody go back and watch that little 11yr. old boy smoke, blowning rings and all, and tell me he isn't smoking like a veteran. The characters may have been one demensional but to me it is besides the point. But to sum it up, this is a shocking movie that I highly recommend watching so that you the non-viewer can form your own opinion.

Black and White
(1999)

hmmm....
I saw this film on cable tv, I had heard the soundtrack and was familiar with the title, plus I was nervously looking forward to see my favorite group (the Wu of course) taking stabs at acting. No. This one won't make it. This film had plenty of memorable scenes (mostly for bad reasons) but completely failed to come together. (*I did think it was cool when Method Man gave his story about getting locked up in Memphis because it really happened, at the Mtv SMF a few years ago and I had friends who saw it go down but anyways...) What started off as a story about suburban white kids and their fascination with black culture turned into the life of Rich Bowers. His character is unconvincing, going from selfish and foul actions to "I'm righteous now, lets make rap videos" seemingly overnight. I was surprised at all of the well known names in a movie of this class ("hey, thats the guy thats in Fight Club," or "haven't I seen this kid before?" or "hey, there's Tweeder," or "Wow Ben Stiler is in this?" or "what the f-Mike Tyson?!"). What is worth seeing is Mike Tyson acting like himself (what's with him trying to come off as being deep and why would anyone come to him for wisdom- "...so what I decipher from your vanacular") And someone tell me how everyone ends up at this party? The hip mother of one of the young white girls and her school teacher mingling with boxers and rappers? I can't say anything else but to watch it for yourself to see how missing-the-point it is, just don't pay money to see it, you'll be mad.

Yôma
(1989)

...that music
I learned of this movie through the ADV previews while watching the Neon Genesis episodes. Not only did the scenes appear to be some of the sickest (awesome sick) I might ever see, but the japanese woman's singing and the music set a mood of utter darkness and depression. I rewound that little two minute preview until I remember what I put the tape in for. I had to watch it. My favorite anime store did not have it to rent so I was forced to buy it. Upon finally watching, I found that although it did not shake up my universe like I had hoped, it still was able to impress me. The entire movie is dark, it has been a while since I watched it (my copy has made the borrowed-never-returned list) and I do not recall any kind of humor in this movie. All in all it is maybe a step under Ninja Scroll, good story and fighting. And for my final thought, this movie makes my top ten "Movies to Compliment a Semi-Depressed Mood."

A good sleeper.

MP Da Last Don
(1998)

So bad, you have to see it.
What can I say? If you have seen "I'm Bout It," then you will note that although the P had a little more money for better filming quality, the acting was still bad, if not worse. And the story? Master P, the son of an Italian crime boss? You have to hear him using his Scarface voice throughout the movie. Hilarious! And I don't think I have seen worse action scenes. I don't even feel like commenting any more. You have to see it for yourself.

Shaolin xiao zi
(1984)

Anvenge my death? Not this time...
Many of my friends who I have convinced to check this movie out are ready to chase me out the house after watching the opening scene and singing, but after watching the fight scenes they usually gain a little more respect for the movie. Although many of the same actors showed up from the original Shaolin Temple, the storyline is completely different, and the tone of part 2 is lighthearted, which may turn many off. This movie is one of my all-time favorite martial arts films because I haven't found many films that highlight young children sparring off (besides the "My Father is a Hero" boy who's name I forgot) and I personally love to see the women get in the action. The last fight scene is great, but what did it for me was the children's competition. Seeing them play fight in animal styles was magic. A good movie, my friends who hated on this movie just felt like a "kiddie" movie like this was an assault on their manhood

I'm Bout It
(1997)

Ghetto cult classic
It gives me great joy to have acquired this movie. This is one of the best movies I own, and I hope the guy I borrowed it from does not come over and remember I still have his tape! But don't get me wrong, this could be the worst acting I've seen to date and the plot was...well...HORRID, but that is the beauty of it. To enjoy this movie it must be viewed solely for it's unintentional humor. It's so bad you will literally be entertained looking for those shining moments, my personal favorites are any scenes with Silk the shocker's attempts at acting. I recommend watching this with a friend, so the laughter came be shared and ya'll can team up to crack on noteworthy scenes. I haven't seen all of Master P's movies, but I highly recommend his "Last Don" movie if you enjoy "I'm Bout it" like I do.
