Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber
(2022)

Dramatic true based miniseries
This is apparently a true based story of the invention of the ride carshare uber. The way it's filmed, very much feels like a film but cut into several parts. Haven't not known of it's history and the startup process, it was certainly eye opening and intriguing to a degree. The casting seems very solid of the cast portraying these real life people (of which we seen the real life counterparts in the end credits of the final episode).

Overall it is well acted and a lot more serious and dramatic than initially expected. As we expected something quite light hearted but it deals with serious issues and the language and profanity is certainly for nature audiences.

There are only 7 episodes but they range from around an hour each. It's a decent watch as it reminds somewhat of the Social Network. However there are parts in every episode where scenes drag on too long and feel repetitive. There are several "fourth wall breaking" moments as well which were by supporting characters that felt awkward.

In the end, Super Pumped is more for a certain audience as this series really seemed to have become forgotten.

Big Gold Brick
(2022)

Fails on about every level
While watching we don't exactly get a sense as to what this film is about and why we should care about these characters. This film feels like a mess and mix up of other genre pieces. It tries being comedic but it feels forced, the drama isn't thrilling or suspenseful and the atmosphere comes off as bland, generic and lifeless.

It features notable actors who clearly participated in this film as a pay check movie.

The main plot isn't interesting in the slightest and it feels dragged on far too long. What exactly was the reason we ask. Then other subplots go nowhere, such as Floyd's mentorship of a high school basketball star (who looked far older to be in high school) and Sam's awkward attempts to get with Floyd's daughter (Lucy Hale).

Oscar Isaac randomly appears very late in the film as an over-the-top mobster with a machine-gun fetish.

In the end, the pretentious traits exhibited by both characters carry over to the film itself, as Big Gold Brick fails to pay off.

The System
(2022)

Cliched prison drama
Nothing exactly fresh or new about this film. It's quite a generic and standard unoriginal prison film which was apparently straight to video. The plot isn't anything creative or something which makes things memorable. Certainly there is an audience for these type of films but there are films in this same genre which have been done better before. Many cliches to be had.

Tyrese Gibson plays an undercover soldier where throughout the film he puts on a look of disgust. Jeremy Piven plays the over the top warden with a southern accent. Then Terrence Howard seemed to be the mentor spewing knowledge but he seemed to phone in his performance. It wasn't encouraging as it was perhaps meant to be.

In the end, even though it's relatively a short runtime it felt repetitive and rather long.

Gunpowder Milkshake
(2021)

Not as clever and stylish as it thought to be
In which has been compared to the likes of the John Wick films and the Kingsman films, Gunpowder Milkshake is an all female lead assassin type crime drama. It is quite stylish in its visuals and designs but lacks real substance. The story setup isn't original and not too interesting.

Karen Gillan does a solid enough portrayal as the lead independent tough woman who seemingly was abandoned at a young age, trying to make change. Involving a young child, whom is one of the standouts.

There are some decent crafted action sequences but nothing exactly memorable. The story feels like it drags on towards the end where it could have been cut slightly. Overall it's watchable but nothing special.

Glory Daze
(1995)

Incredibly bland college slacker indie
Released in 1995 featuring a young Ben Affleck in one of his earliest leading roles, along with other familiar names in Sam Rockwell and a minor role in Alyssa Milano.

This film is nothing special and is rather bland and boring at times. Featuring a group of five college friends who rent to stay at a small frat house nearby while trying to figure out their daily lives attending college.

The comedy is non existent and quite genetic. There are the typical "trying to get back with your ex", boyfriend/ girlfriend drama with the leads, and other minor subplots we've seen before.

Nothing exactly stands out and at times it feels like a chore to finish. There is a minute cameo from Matthew McConaughey early in the film, a very brief non-speaking cameo by Matt Damon (wearing a bright pink shirt), then a lengthier cameo by Brendan Fraser and Leah Remini as an arguing couple on the bus.

Glory Daze doesn't offer anything new but may be a nostalgia trip for people of that time which may lead to them enjoying the film for what it is.

Running Point
(2025)

Passable but more dramatic than comedic
Apparently some have compared this series to Ted Lasso. However this deals with a professional basketball team and league. The premise made it seem like it would be a watchable laid back comedy, and to start the show was that way. However as we continue watching, the series tend to lean more on a few serious issues and dramatic occurrences, such as of course family dynamics, drug rehab players, cheating scandals, diseases and such. It doesn't get too serious as there are still a relatively light hearted atmosphere but the content is certainly slightly heavy. Also a lot more cursing than expected.

Kate Hudson does solid work as the newly independent put-in charge owner and we see growth. The oldest brother played by Justin Theroux is more of a minor supporting role where his credit is simply an "and". It certainly seemed like he would be one of the leads.

The second older brother Ness is the most likeable while the younger brother of Sandy is easily the least likeable, and comes across as self centered in several episodes. The episodes where we he has the main subplots are the weakest. Then the youngest and newest half-brother (whom it turns out the other siblings were unaware of) tends to have his moments.

The show is certainly passable and it's interesting enough but the comedy is either trying too hard or just silly and generic. Nothing is really humorous. After the cliffhanger ending at the very last scene of season one, there will certainly be a second season. And we expect Theroux to be more focused.

Shark Bait
(2022)

Unoriginal generic shark thriller
Starring a group of college students who seemingly steal jet skis only to have their karma get back on them. The characters are the standard stereotypical college party type we are familiar with none truly standing out. We identify with the lead actress as she's the nice, and seemingly innocent one of the bunch.

The shark doesn't show up relatively too early on and throughout its appearance, it certainly teases its attacks on the characters. Where there were plenty of instances where the shark could have easily gotten them all but it would simply attack and bite one character or part of the jet ski then disappear.

The majority of the film is simply these characters stranded on the jet ski then one by one the shark takes each one out. Nothing thrilling as the shark was very cgi fake looking.

Overnight Delivery
(1998)

Not comedic or romantic, more so annoying
A rather innocent type of college romantic comedy starring Paul Rudd and a young Reese Witherspoon. Apparently described by several as "Road Trip before Road Trip" and after watching this film, can certainly see the similarities among both films. However Road Trip was more of a raunchy frat type comedy more focused of juvenile humor, gags and seemingly had more supporting characters while Overnight Delivery is more focused on a couple featuring a lot of coincidences.

The problem with this film is all the actions that go wrong and certainly by the fault of the lead character of Paul Rudd, who comes across as incredibly annoying and trying a little hard to be funny. Reese Witherspoon's introduction is her as a stripper (which was not convincing) then seemingly that angles drops and we wonder why she's being so helpful to Rudd. The entirely aspect of a stripper helping a stranger felt unrealistic. If anything Christine Taylor as Rudd's girlfriend was underused.

The film just isn't funny or romantic and the end feels more like a waste. The entire road trip adventure aspect revolving around the delivery person felt entirely forced. We question as to why he was overly protective to the one package that Rudd did not want to be delivered.

It's no surprise that this film is seemingly forgotten in both Paul Rudd and Reese Witherspoon's filmography.

The Rover
(2014)

Slow moving and leads nowhere
Quite a rather depressing futuristic depiction drama. The outside scenery illustrates exactly what to expect but as we continue watching, there appears to be very little development and very little of excitement to be occurring. The acting by both Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson is strong as they are compelling enough, especially Pattinson. But overall in the end, it's rather disappointing, depressing and ultimately left nowhere.

Several silly instances by the characters which could have prevented their ultimately demise. It is as a whole, rather bland and typecasted boring. Dragged on quite a bit as well.

These Final Hours
(2013)

Limited and not very thrilling
With a relatively intriguing premise and apparently being an Australian film, the scenery is certainly great and makes the film worthwhile. Lesser known but certainly capable actors, this film doesn't exactly differ from other similar genre types. The violence at times is graphic and off putting and very brief but this is meant to be more of a sci-fi realistic drama.

We don't get to know much of the main actors and that's not too great. The lead is decent and the little girl is perhaps the standout. Some things weren't very clear such as the ending. Nowhere near as tense or thrilling as some of these high rated reviews are claiming. Left disappointed.

Mehyô
(1985)

Visually stunning dealing with disturbing and lustful elements
It rather is the corrupt tale of a murder mystery somewhat but the deaths are rather tame and hidden. About an innocent sister who goes to stay with her "eccentric" and very wealthy brother in his large mansion only to discover secrets she was unaware of.

Simply by reading the premise, and seeing the cover we could get a sense at the type of film it would lead to. Filled with several explicit scenes with the lead Yuko (who was apparently only 18) showing a lot of skin through out.

There are no real twists as things play out as we would expect. The brother has feelings for the sister and she inevitably caves in to him considering she's alone. We know it's coming we just wait to see how it unfolds.

The real climax and rather disturbing scene revolves around three of the brother's henchmen/ security guard members being told by the brother's wife to have their way with the sister. As things unfold, we see that the brother was behind a see through one-way mirror in another room watching her get raped by three men. Suddenly he puts down his pants and does his business. Of course the wife later comes in and noticed him. The scene of course started as rape then casually seemed to turn more consensual with the sister enjoying herself.

There are metaphors with butterflies and paintings throughout. And of course within the final scene, we get quite a lengthy and well shot explicit scene of the siblings, which started with the sister coming back fully nude entering the brother's studio this leading to the scene though first with him painting her.

The very ending was rather disappointing with the brother's wife sneaking up behind them delivering some sort of injection to her husband then to herself, which we aren't sure why. If we are lead to believe it was poisonous and it killed him or simply temporarily dazed him.

Overall it's quite a disturbing film of course dealing with the subject matter and there are several explicit scenes. Nothing too gory but it's a decent watch, ant times boring and repetitive but since it's rather short in run time, it's worthwhile. The visuals of the paintings, the house and scenery are quite nice.

Van Nuys Blvd.
(1979)

Rather tame and unfunny thinly stretched out comedy
The title of this film apparently refers to a common street name. This film is a typical 1970's type teen comedy of sorts. There is typical music from that time as well as all carefree desperate teen characters (portrayed by much older looking actors). There are several random and bizarre comedic scenes but it's not really funny. One scene where the main cast gets sent to jail, apparently spend the night then in the next scene we see them having funny at Magic Mountain- an amusement park.

There's also a very cringe and off putting scene toward the end where one of the teens bring her boyfriend into her house (he's dressed in drag to disguise her parents). Her parents are there and see the two of them with the father apparent having "looks" at the guy dressed in drag (of course the father is unaware thinking he's a woman). Then a scene later on, the girlfriend sneaks into the boyfriend's bed, of course takes off his wig and start fooling around. Few seconds later, the father sneaks into the room where the boyfriend is sleeping (father still thinks he's a girl) and the father is right beside him and apparently he doesn't see that the wig isn't off. The lights were turned off but it was rather ridiculous as he was stroking his legs and such. Then of course moments later, the wife enters the room and turns on the lights to reveal everything. This was meant to be comedic but came off as cringe and made the father look perverted.

There are the typical brief explicit scenes which is to be expected. Nothing too graphic and they aren't too long. Overall nothing about this film was funny, was rather cringe and very thinly plotted.

Malibu Beach
(1978)

Care free and not very substantial
Another teen centred comedy from the 1970's revolving around the beach, bikinis and the summer time. It's a comedy but the generic kind with no laughs, as it plays more like a romantic comedy. There are several different characters but we don't get to know them too much.

The cover poster art depicts a running gag where a large dog steals women's bikinis while they are lying on the beach. It was slightly humorous at first then got repetitive and wasn't funny. The end pay off wasn't anything special but we saw the collection of bikinis near the end. We wonder how they trained the dog to partake in this.

Overall it's a carefree teen summer comedy with some brief skin shown. Nothing and no character really stands out. The song playing throughout was decent.

Vivarium
(2019)

Not clear cut but highly intriguing
The plot description and synopsis doesn't sound exactly what the film turned out to be. It's very clearly a lesser known independent foreign based film which isn't the typical Hollywood norm types.

It contains a relatively different plot device and unfolds with a lot of questions, more so than answers in the end. It's an intriguing and entirely not clear cut film with several mystery elements which lead to confusing results but even so it's entertaining to watch.

Parts aren't exactly clear such as how much time has passed (it's to be assumed that the baby grew up to be the child then the adult). We don't know where the location is, as there are no mention of street names and no neighbors as we don't see anyone else either driving along the way. We also don't get the main purpose as to why they were doing this. The ending wasn't too clear.

Overall it's an intriguing yet confusing film but quite creative.

Moonfall
(2022)

Not entertaining in the slightest
With the resurgence of space science-do films in recent years, studios capitalized on these big blockbuster type films. The major problem is we have seen them done before and done far better. This film simply feels cheap and lacks anything to make it stand out.

It was increasingly dull and plain boring. The lead of Patrick Wilson was miscast as he's simply not a believable or interesting actor, specifically for this role.

Moonfall is a film that removes most of the science from science fiction. There are a lot of science errors in the story. The film argues, for instance, that is plausible for most of the astronomers in the world to be unaware that the moon is getting closer to the earth, and that it is up to a exposed janitor to sound the alarm on social media. If the moon was getting closer to the earth, it would appear larger in the sky. Perhaps in own words here, even non-astronomers would notice that. Even astrologers would notice that.

This is simply one of the worst attempts at space films in memory. We are not surprised one bit that this was a box office failure.

Ad Astra
(2019)

Long lasting and rather boring
There have certainly been a high demand in space science-fiction films over the years with several ranging from action films, to thrillers and mysteries to dramas. Ad Astra is filmed greatly and has solid visuals but it's nothing in which we haven't seen before. This film is certainly a slow paced slow burner drama and for the most part isn't too intriguing and comes across as boring.

Brad Pitt feels very lifeless in his delivery with for the majority revolving around him delivering narration in a very monotonous voice. The central plot revolving his father was rather confusing and ultimately dull. For the most part, this film lacks excitement, thrills and anything worthwhile to stand out.

Moon
(2009)

Space exploration doesn't land far
For such a critically acclaimed film, Moon isn't an action sci-fi great in which expected. The majority of the film surrounds around our lead Sam Rockwell alone in his space unit wandering around looking sad and depressed. There are of course the occasional scenes showing him on video call with his presumed wife. It does pick up the pace when he discovers a clone of himself. Nothing much is quite explained but we continue watching and even so, it doesn't exactly lead to anywhere entirely shocking or revealing. The visuals are great as is his performance but for the most part, it's quite a bland film. Lacks real excitement.

BoJack Horseman
(2014)

Deeper and more meaningful than expected
On surface level this tv series appears to similar to other previous comedic adult animated cartoon films. The animation is great with its visuals and colors and there are plenty of different and creative animals to enjoy. The writers and animators do a great job in creating a unique variety of characters- whether main characters, recurring characters or simply minor cameo characters.

The show has the feel of a live action sitcom where continuity through each episode is present and there are several things to notice from each episode. The show in season one begins seemingly as a comedy then in its later seasons get deeper and more meaningful.

Bojack Horesman is the clear sole primary focus in season one then onwards, although he's still the main character. We see a lot more of the other leads plots and stories such as Mr. Peanut Butter, Diane, Princess Carolyn and Todd.

Another good thing about the show is each season has a different main focus revolving around Bojack. The first three seasons are mostly comedic with drama than the final three seasons feel a little more drama- still with the occasional funny moments. The dialogue is also very intriguing.

It's difficult to claim which season is the best, perhaps leading towards season 3 and season 6 (standouts s3e3, s3e12, s6e4, s6e11). Season 1 and season 4 are possibly the weakest. Overall very groundbreaking show, and it's disappointing it ended quite early. They surely could have extended the series to about 10 seasons.

Suicide Girls Must Die!
(2010)

Not for everyone but enjoyable to a degree
With no knowledge of these films or their content, and having little expectations. This film isn't as bad as some have made it out to be, and it turned out to be more entertaining than initially expected.

It's clearly meant to be a found footage type horror mockumentary type film, reminiscing of the Blair Witch Project. The acting at times doesn't feel scripted with a majority of the scenes just consisting of these heavily tattooed women arguing, screaming and bickering back and forth.

Its plot is very simply. About a dozen of these models go into an isolated cabin in the woods to film a calendar photo shoot, then one by one a girl goes missing. We don't exactly see how these girls go missing or who abducts/ kills them which keeps it more suspenseful.

Several highlights include the random appearance of the "caretaker" seemingly popping out of nowhere when the women were around the campfire. Then another scene with the police officer arriving to seemingly help the women find of the women who got "lost" in the woods.

Also near latter part of the film when they were down to 7 women was when things got further interesting with the women forming two groups. We see a major blowup amongst them with four of the women leaving the cabin area with the use of the boat, boating across the large river to eventually get back to the remote area. This wasn't exactly clear.

Unfortunately the very ending reveal was completely disappointing as it took away from what we witnessed. We understand the reasoning but there could have been a better ending.

Clearly this is a film for not everyone as there is an abundance of open nudity (from these photo shoots) and these women for the most part aren't exactly likeable with the constant whining and bickering. The standouts are Amina, Daven and Fractal (who looks similar to Krysten Ritter). Don't expect too much and don't expect a full out horror film.

Sex-Positive
(2024)

Over the top with an overload of skin
This film is an independent based film and certainly feels like a parody attempt and homages to past sex comedies. The acting over all isn't great as many characters are very over the top and they try acting comical which mostly falls flat. This film feels more so like a soft core adult film but disguised as an art film. The nudity is in about every scene, however not all is in a sexual way. There are brief explicit scenes with many jumping back and forth. It certainly is more than expected as the actors seemed to be enjoying themselves.

The central plot regarding a young innocent girl being brought into this world and somehow stumbling into the house she stays in starts off decent but its plot is very thin and things start getting repetitive. We learn more about different characters and their motives but in the end, it ultimately feels pointless and without consequences. The film isn't entirely bad and the lead is decent to watch but also makes several questionable decisions which we question in the end. The humor is at times very cheesy and cringe with a lot of very forced sequences.

Swimming Pool
(2003)

Frustrating and ultimately confusing
Received raved reviews and praise and several awards upon its release. The story of this film has somewhat of an intriguing premise as it's meant to be a murder mystery of sorts. The overall execution does have strong performances from both leads but in the end we are left with a rather boring conclusion and several things which are confusing. This is a film which seems to have different interpretations and theories which is why people rate it so highly. The characters are completely unlikeable, and the story is simply boring to get through. There is also a lot more nudity than expected. Nothing is exactly clear and its apparent twist in the end is utterly confusing.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
(2012)

Very dry and slow moving
The premise of this film is clearly not meant to be taken serious as it's quite obviously a spoof and parody. However it feels quite more serious than it should have been given its plot description. Nothing about the film is as interesting given the content. It's a period piece mixed with a horror vampire aspect but the general feel and tone of the film simply isn't fun.

The violence and gore is basic as one would expect. The film lacks an intriguing story and lacks any thrills, suspense or mystery. It's relatively tame at certain points and feels that it drags on far too much. Very dialogue driven which causes a lot of boring and dull scenes.

Deadfall
(2012)

Gritty but goes over the edge
Perhaps started off relatively good and intriguing but later vanished into dull and silky territory. As a whole, Deadfall was an overly stretched watch because it was constantly reminding of how much better it could have been. Several potential opportunities were missed that could have elevated it above its peers, but instead it seems content to be a forgettable experience. Although not exactly a terrible movie, the glimpses of watch ability hidden behind the forced departure only serve to remind viewers that Deadfall could have been a tauter, more focused film than what they were given. With a subpar predictable ending.

8MM 2
(2005)

Run of the mill dull plot thriller
Despite its title, 8mm 2 is a sequel in name only as there is no connection to the 1999 film starring Nicolas Cage. This sequel very much has the feel of a typical straight to video film where they ramp up the explicit scenes, and nudity for the sake of it. The plot isn't original and not very interesting. It does get a little intriguing towards the latter end but ultimately the twist and reveal isn't exactly a memorable moment.

The overall tone and atmosphere wasn't nearly as thrilling or suspenseful as it could have been. The very ending with the lead Trish being on the train and spotting her husband with other members she was familiar with, with a look of disbelief wasn't quite clear. Our we lead to believe he wasn't faithful and everything was a setup? Overall it's rather dull and lifeless.

Cashback
(2006)

Very slow paced, bizarre and quite pretentious
This film has seemingly received a lot of high praised among fans. The original source material is from a short then it was ultimately adapted into a full feature film. This is an independent British film and it very much feels so.

Described as a fantasy romantic drama, it offers some comedic elements but overall it is incredibly slow moving, with an off beat pace where the central story tries being very touching, sentimental but simply falls flat and emotionless.

The lead character is meant to be someone we are supposed to root for yet he comes across as standoff-ish, depressing and overall moody and someone you wouldn't want to interact with. Seemingly selfish in his ways and also incredibly creepy and perverted with his ability to be able to freeze frame time for him to do whatever.

The infamous scene is where he's in the aisle of the supermarket and he freezes time then walks up to several young women revealing their clothing, touching them and suddenly starts painting. His behavior seems to be excused because he's a painter.

None of this is ever explained as to how he has the ability to freeze and slow down time and it simply comes across as creepy. We are lead to believes it's a hallucination or dream-like yet in one scene he's able to pick up his boss, carry him and move him into another place.

Later on, there is a soccer scene which was meant to be humorous but came across as forced and it drags on. Then towards the end, possibly the climax scene at the boss' party, our lead Ben sees his ex-girlfriend and things further spiral with him and the current love interest employee.

Overall, it was hard to root for the lead as he came across as simply dull and unlikeable. None of the characters are likeable, especially the two male employees that are always fooling around. They are meant as comic relief but simply weren't funny and more so forced.

For a film with a relatively short runtime, it drags on (too many flashback scenes of his childhood), and too many narration sequences.

Cashback simply felt longer than it should have and ultimately was boring for the most part. One of the more pretentious and quite overrated films having seen.
