Elementary My Dear Viewer
(2007)

Without a doubt the best documentary on Sherlock Holmes
As soon as I read the information for this documentary, I knew that I would be in for a rare treat. Richard E. Grant clearly has a huge interest in the character of Sherlock Holmes in the stories and in the television/film productions. Especially after starring in two Sherlock Holmes films.

The guests are also Sherlock Holmes fans and most of them are actors who appeared in the Granada television series of Sherlock Holmes starring the late Jeremy Brett, there is a touching and warm tribute to him in the show.

An excellent documentary which I highly recommend for all fans of the Great Detective.

Sherlock
(2002)

Possibly one of the wost Sherlock Holmes films ever made
This is a very poor film, it seems that the director and producer simply created a character and gave him the same name as the great detective, he is nothing at all like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original creation.

To begin with, Holmes had several inapproriate affairs with women and is acting like some sort of a poor action hero. Dr Watson is far too old (both men are meant to be in there very early twenties) and Mycroft, for some inexplicable reason, is a cripple with metal casts on his legs.

James D'Arcy makes a fair stab at Sherlock Holmes and Richard E. Grant (unfortunately only in one scene and a few flashback sequences) is excellent as Mycroft Holmes.

This film would have been much, much better had they followed Doyle's original writings and hired better actors.

Murder by Decree
(1979)

The Greatest Sherlock Holmes Film EVER Made!!
I am a big Sherlock Holmes fan and normally I am very much against Non-canonical Holmes stories. However, when I discovered that there were two films which placed Holmes in the case of Jack the Ripper I immediately bought the DVD for this film and I was more than impressed. The clever plot and the superb acting make this film perfect.

Christopher Plummer gives a fine performance as the great sleuth, his performance as Holmes is almost as powerful as Jeremy Brett's, I was also impressed to see a rarely seen side to Holmes' character – emotion. James Mason is also on fine form in the role of the faithful friend Dr John Watson.

The dedication given to the film by the cast and crew is shown, the camera movements at the scene of the first murder shown in the film is powerful and extremely suspenseful.

This film is a film which should not be missed fans of Sherlock Holmes.

The Nanny
(1965)

By far, the greatest Hammer film ever produced
As much as I like the Hammer films, especially the Dracula and Frankenstein films, this film really does stand out from the rest.

Bette Davis, as always, is fantastic in her role. Throughout the film, you keep on thinking to yourself, that she has definitely got a dark side that is going to come out and when it does, she uses her unique eyes to frighten you even more.

The suspense carries on throughout the film and keeps you guessing at every corner and you become afraid of what might happen to other characters that enter, like Aunt Pen. You think that Joey, the boy, is going to kill them all in the night.

I bought the DVD of this film only because it was a Hammer film, it had a script by Jimmy Sangster and it starred Bette Davis, but I got a lot more than I bargained for.

The Brides of Dracula
(1960)

A Good Film though Peter Cushing is the main reason for watching it
I heard that this was Hammer Horror at its finest but I was misinformed. Don't get me wrong, this is a good Hammer film and Peter Cushing is the best thing in it as he usually is in most of his films.)

Don't let the title mislead you. Dracula is only mentioned once throughout the film and that is in a short voice over after the Opening Credits.

It is quite scary and it pumps adrenaline through your body. Though David Prowse is not scary, he does not have the same presence as Christopher Lee does when he plays a vampire.

If you like Hammer and Peter Cushing then buy this film, if you're looking for a good Dracula film then look elsewhere.
