Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da
(2010)

Disgusting to the limit.
As I was about to review this crap, I noticed the main review read "Intensely explicit & extremely shocking".

This is absolutely true.

So if you are sick enough to enjoy watching vivisections and the like, then this is the film for you.

Also, if that happens to be the case, I would recommend you visiting a shrink, since this is the most outrageous and grotesque film I have ever watched. And believe me I have seen some movies close to this one if you look at my reviews, but none of them are no match at all to this sick, perverted cinematographic piece of you know what which deserves the title of king of gore. Beware this is not horror movie gore: this is absolutely sick gore and it does not help the world in any way.

No Time to Die
(2021)

Casino Royale undefeated. Regrettably, looks like it is unbeatable. This one: a disaster.
This is the first of the 25 Bond movies I was longing for it to end.. I'll make it short: a disaster of the saga. And NOT because of the "originalities" (that's not the problem): the script is predictable, boring, lacks creativity, lacks variety of beautiful places, and the action scenes are outrageously unnecessary long. The first 30 minutes are great; then I recommend that you just stand up and leave the theater. And in case you follow my advice and just don't go, then watch the trailer 4 or 5 times, because it contains all there is.

Triple Frontier
(2019)

Disgusting propaganda that tries to turn cheap mercenaries into heroes.
I have taken note of the director of this crap, J. C. Chandor, in order not to ever again waste a second of my life watching a film made by him. Before watching, I read almost a hundred reviews all stating that there was a good plot badly administered and that the film went down the tube in the second half. ALL THIS IS TRUE. This crap tries to sell us (and probably there will be some "naifs" out there who buy) the idea that trained mercenaries for whom murdering is everyday profession, go sentimental and they don't care for the money in the end. Question for the director: Do you think most of us people are stupid? Final recommendation: do not waste a second with this, there are better things to do in life.

What Just Happened
(2008)

A Little Gem Hidden in an Unnoticed Fine Film
This film, as you may already know, deals with a week in the life of a Hollywood producer. So for starters we do not have an epic here. That said, let me express that it is still very, very interesting to grasp what the life of these people is like in a real very good and quite faithful to reality (at least that's what it looks like) representation. Now, make no mistake about this: this is one of de Niro's best performances ever. Indeed it is, and if you consider the mediocrity of his career in these last 10~15 years, it is clearly not only his best of latest performances, but also it is objectively an impressive performance. Dealing with ego-sick characters as a producer must have to all the time (and maybe to some degree the producer is so itself) is definitely not an easy to perform character. To end with, the music is OUTSTANDING. It matches every emotional moment near to perfection, and indeed, Marcelo Zarvos should have been awarded for this. You may like this film (which I saw again last night after 9 years) as much as I did, or not so much, but in any case it will capture your attention from start to end. In a sense this film is unique by its script.

El otro hermano
(2017)

Disgusting gore and explicitness.
While the script of this movie reaches mediocre suspense (therefore 4/10 and not 1/10), the unnecessary explicitness makes this film a crap. I really just cannot figure out the lack of any thought of the producers about this fact, because this a is a sick film for sick audiences. This kind of production just contributes to a more degenerate world. Not much more I can say.

Blood and Wine
(1996)

Cinema Good Old Times Alike Incredibly Good Film
Back when it was released, I saw this movie. By now, 2018, I kept a good memory of it, especially it was quite interesting and visually recreating. But frankly, I remembered few and bad about the plot. I saw it again last night, and was delighted, literally, because this kind of films are no made anymore. Also allow me to say that this cast is not available anymore. The thriller is very well done, with a very good realistic and original non-cliche plot and again, the cast, although they are still alive, I am already missing them. To me, it was a cinema feast. I can't recall more than 30 to 40 movies of which I can say the same. Anyway, whatever your taste, this is well done, it will draw your attention throughout its entirety. Very highly recommended!!

The Untouchables
(1987)

Ridiculously Unreal. It should be in the Disney Collection.
Let me begin by saying that I am a Brian de Palma fan, I very much like and appreciate his films, but this one... this one is a bad, bad joke. Kevin Costner in his toughest look matches the Ingalls and Sean Connery's Oscar for best performance in a secondary role is the most outrageous Oscar award ever. The only near-decent acting here is De Niro playing Al Capone, and I mean "near". This is the gangster's film I would have expected had it been made for an audience composed by children between 12 and 16 years old. The "gore" (and I really do not like gore in films) is so funny that I was expecting to see a forgotten can of tomato sauce at any moment. Please, don't lose your time on this one; there are better things to do in life.

La Cordillera
(2017)

Good film that should have been great.
"La Cordillera" (aka The Summit) is a decent well done flick. But once again (this happening a bit too much lately with local films) I leave the cinema with the uncomfortable feeling that much more could have been done and that if all that was necessary had been done, this title would raise vertically to masterpiece category. All in all, La Cordillera has several aims. One of them is representing politicians for what they actually are: a piece of s**t, and this aim is completely achieved. But short of that, it delves further into a parallel captivating paranormal story, that unfortunately is left without a proper resolution. I can understand the purpose of the director and the writers behind this missing piece; however the same effect could have been reached with the proper work. Oddly enough, and this is something indeed rare, this film which is 1 hour and 54 minutes long, falls short of length: in my personal opinion, this should have been a 3 hour film. I want to highlight the work of one of the two writers, Mariano Llinás, because his style (which I like a lot) is undoubtedly present here. There are two very good films he directed, "Balnearios" and "Historias Extraordinarias" I never forget about, although the latter declines somewhat in the second half. Only good scripts can be expected by this writer, and in the end and with the necessary polishing, extraordinary films are due. La Cordillera will have your attention all the two hours long.

Querida voy a comprar cigarrillos y vuelvo
(2011)

Original
"Querida, Voy a Comprar Cigarrillos y Vuelvo" is definitely a very unusual film. The idea of the script is brilliant... just the idea, because this idea needs huge polishing and a great memorable film could have been made if this fact had been present. The film is interesting, definitely it will keep you watching until the end, and it is quite short (1 hour and 20 minutes), so I do recommend it. Beware, however, it is quite depressing: many facts about life that are true but nobody wants to acknowledge, come into light in the film and not precisely in a subtle way. I kept wondering if it's a 6 or a 7. Finally I gave it 6: for IMDb 6 is not too good, but in my scale it is a good mark.

El ciudadano ilustre
(2016)

Masterpiece.
For starters, let me express that all the events that take place in this film can happen in real life, this fact being very welcome and of course, unusual. Not short of this, the genre explored here is indeed scarce. This film invades the spectator with a feeling of uneasiness very difficult to describe by minute five. And far from relieving you from this uncanny feeling, it builds up more and more and more and more. By the hour, I just had to stop and switch my TV to a stupid channel in order to go to bed peacefully. But don't misunderstand me: if you see my reviews you'll find I'm a tough critic of unnecessary violence and gore. What you have here is a mounting tension like when you see huge amounts of snow in the mountain ladder and you know a huge avalanche is due. Some other reviewers (of this same film) call this "predictable"; in my opinion they are completely mistaken. The avalanche is due, but you just don't know when and what it'll do. The nearest comparison I have at hand is a very old film starring Dustin Hoffman "The Straw Dogs", but it's just a poor comparison: "The Distinguished Citizen" is by far better and suspenseful. I watched the (almost) remaining half the next day and it just got better. Be warned, this film is better served for those who are emotionally sensitive: an idiot will just not notice that everything that goes on in this film is terribly wrong! I will end up saying that this is a class A film that deserves a place in the nominees for best foreign language films if not the Oscar. Highly recommended.

The Talented Mr. Ripley
(1999)

A Memorable Film
I saw this movie quite soon after it was made and kept record in my memory of it being quite fine. Now, about fifteen years later, I saw it again, and honestly, I am impressed for the fact that it was even much better than I remembered. Clearly, to me it is the very best of Minghella, and most surely one of my top ten ever (and I HAVE watched quite a number of films). The music is superb; so are the views of Italy. Also, by 2015, which is when I am writing this review you can delight yourself with a number of impressive actors, many of them in their very beginnings. Matt Damon is excellent. Jude Law is excellent. And so are Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Jack Davenport. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is OUTSTANDING: I've met people like the character he plays and I sware it is impossible to play this better. This film, is a hundred dollar seat worth movie, and the second half will just keep you tied to the seat no matter what. By the way it is a rather long flick, the kind you wish it were even longer. DO NOT MISS IT.

The Great Gatsby
(2013)

A clownish version of a romantic drama
Robert Redford's Great Gatsby was filmed when I was a teenager. For some reason or other I had never seen this film, and so got the Di Caprio's remake. After a few minutes I was wondering "...what is this crap?? They're playing rap!! Rap! 1920s!!" I kept on for about an hour only to find out that this film is in the same exaggerated fragrance as "The Wolf of Wall Street"... well there are lots of people out there who like this absurd, grotesque and more that any other thing UNREAL style. I don't. Needless to say I got the old fashioned version (Redford's one) and although all in all I just did not like the script, I found it far superior.

The Hunter
(2011)

Great Film
It's been long time since I came out so satisfied by a film as I have felt after seeing The Hunter. I must admit that I find Willen Dafoe a captivating actor, and this film suits him magnificently. The script is simple, still quite strong, and it will catch your attention from start to end. The Tasmanian scenery adds to something mysterious, not quite well known to most of us I guess, and indeed I found it so mesmerizing that I took the time to find its exact location on the globe and many of it's geographical characteristics. This is one of those films that although you might not find it great as I did, still will leave you comfortable enough for the time spent.

La piel que habito
(2011)

Insanity at its best
Let me tell you first that I seldom write Internet Movie DataBase reviews anymore, although I have in fact written several. With this film I shall make an exception, because if I though that many of the latest Tarantino films were sick, then I must admit that I have fallen way short. Before I forget, and most important: Almodovar needs a shrink, and he needs it bad and urgently. This piece of crap deals with the most unrealistic -nonetheless disgustingly sick- script I have ever come across, exception made, of course, of science-fiction. The 3/10 rating stands for a barely almost-standard script unfolding, but don't get me wrong: this is definitely a piece of s**t. Don't lose your time and don't contribute to an even more degenerate world than that we're already living in.

Attack the Block
(2011)

Loved this Film
Really, quite as simple as I state in the summary: I loved this film. This is a dark comedy in the style of "District 9" with a good load of suspense in between, that may appear a little boring during the first 10/15 minutes, but then it gets started full throttle. Although most of the actors are not widely known, it doesn't fall short of anything at any time; the acting is more than decent, and the spoken script is incredibly funny. Also, the film lasts a moderate hour and a half which is a demonstration of sobriety from the director: same as with music, good things most of the time come in small doses. I honestly recommend this film. It made my Saturday night very happy and enjoyable.

Trespass
(2011)

Rude, Disgusting and Vulgar
In these times of profound decadence, there is undoubtedly a taste for the uneducated, the vulgar, the brutal and the violent. And director Joel Schumacher cheerfully joins the current in order to add some dirty money to his already huge fortune. Now Joel, if you ever happen to read this, let me ask you one question: would you like at your own home what you just put in this very sick movie? Because you are adding the perfect karma for it. Not only buying the perfect karma, but teaching criminals as well. Please dear reader: don't get yourself dirty by watching this s**t. I usually buy movies instead of renting them but I just don't keep them, and then I give them as gift to whoever is with me at that moment. Let me tell you what I did with this one: watched half, then went right to the (very unimaginative and vulgar) end, tore the DVD in two and threw it to the garbage can. The 2 instead of a 1 in the punctuation is because a 2 will have mathematically more impact on the average rating. Nicholas Cage: will you ever make a decent film again?

District 9
(2009)

Stunning Gem
Well... after many, many, many years (27 to be exact), we have a match for John Carpenter's unique science fiction masterpiece "The Thing". And I don't dare say which of the two is the best. I started watching District 9 because it once hit the top 250 at IMDb, --which in itself does not mean that much, the moment we get craps of the Kill Bill style down there-- and to be honest, I expected another crap yet, since the video club owner had discouraged me telling me District 9 was "bizarre", implying it was bad. Let me tell you: the first half is, in effect, bizarre and in a "tv news" fashion; however it is quite amusing and I was just wondering if I'd include it in my second best ever list... then comes the second part (I saw a comment right here titled "Expect the Unexpected"): stunning suspense, brilliant plot... keeps you tied to the seat until the very end... which invites clearly to a sequel. All in all, I hadn't felt like this for a movie for the last 3 or 4 years. It goes, of course, into the top part of my "best ever" movie list.

10/10

El secreto de sus ojos
(2009)

Extraordinary Film
Last night I went to watch this flick, and I must say that all in all, I ended up quite surprised because of it's impressive quality. Taking into account that I was already expecting superior film, indeed, it came out to be even more outstanding than I thought, mainly because of the rare combination of noir genre with very precise and measured funny moments and especially an incredibly faithful description of the Argentine system of justice and the characters that compose it. This last element is just perfect. The movie keeps your attention all the time -no decays at all- and the set design is also great, to such extent that it left me wondering what the tricks of the trade employed to achieve such similarity are. Foreign watchers might not fully understand some great details that are mainly local, but anyway they will surely enjoy the thrilling aspects of the film. It would be enough for them to say that almost all this locale's are just true, no matter how incredible they might look.

Riding Giants
(2004)

Impressive and Mesmerizing
I used to write comments at IMDb, but I don't do so anymore. It happens that IMDb has become massive, and consequently subjectiveness has ruined scores. What do I mean? That anyone that is not particularly fond of movies and doesn't have any expertise on the subject, watches some crap (or the opposite), and in case he likes it, delivers a 10, and if he doesn't he goes for a 1. This of course, cannot measure anything correctly. Now for the film. I truly regret ever having delivered any 10s to some very few films, because then I must score this one with 12 or 13, which is not possible. This documentary has something that I don't expect to watch ever again in my whole life in any other film. It is simply mesmerizing, and it's not just a way of saying; it really is. The last 25 minutes have a load of energy, visual rejoice and wisdom -the words spoken by the starring guys-, that really... there's no possible match. I don't keep movies, rarely would I find any sense in doing so, but this one is the kind of film you should buy and keep, and watch from time to time, maybe 10 or 20 times as years go by. I got nothing more to say. This is a genuine, objective 10 for me.

Les aventuriers
(1967)

Top 250 missing Les Aventuriers
Clear masterpiece from Robert Enrico which should appear in top 100, and doesn't just because of lack of information. Les Aventuriers is the kind of film that is absolutely unique and no replica can parallel it at all. Wonderful scenes under the sun in the beautiful sea are indeed touching; I can hardly think of anyone who does not long with full heart living through such situations of love, friendship and natural beauty. Life, of course, reserves this for a few ones. For those who did not know, this film has been (at long last) released in DVD in France in 2007 as a commemoration for its 40th anniversary. It is spoken and captioned in French only, but the quality out stands even that of the actual cinema several decades ago; it really surprised me. Even if you do not understand French, keep it at hand to lift your mood on a winter rainy day.

El crack
(1981)

Well done
I saw this one back in 1981 and it's commercial title was "Diente por Diente" which means a teeth for a teeth. I remember I was quite impressed for the suspenseful quality of his flick. Years later, by the turn of the century, I made a list of several films I had seen in the past and that where in some way outstanding, and of course, "El Crack" was one of them... but it wasn't available anywhere (I was near at one place who had had it but the tape had gone into pieces). Again, many years later, -26 exactly since its original release- I finally find it, and start watching it with very different eyes: those that 26 years add to your life experience. At first, the first 1/2 hour, the film looks somewhat vulgar and filled with apparently unnecessary details of the main character, but then it starts to raise and raise (which is a unique quality of good films), with very good and unexpected twists. All in all, this is a very good movie and in case you have it at hand, don't miss it. I also found "El Crack 2", a kind of sequel made 2 years later, which I had never seen before. It's not so good as the first part, but it's good and worth watching also. I gave the first part an 8 and the sequel a 7.

The Bourne Ultimatum
(2007)

This one in top 250 is a clear indicative of the decadence of our time.
I watched the first of the sequel, then the second, and at this point I was fed up already. However, being this one in top 250 by the time I write this, I though this one was a one of a kind. Instead, I was trapped with more of the same again. Only "better" in the sense of *much more* of the same. The camera work is frantic; I really wonder how director x(I don't care what his name is) managed to do this. It's outstanding... AND tiring. Does this "outstandicity" make a superb film? Definitely no, in my opinion. We see "outstanding" rarities by the minute these days. For example, take someone who is able to speak inverted (detrevni) fluently; I knew such a person. Now is this good at all for any useful means? The film has no heart: it doesn't trap and captivate the spectator; it's a full rush of (much more than is acceptable)unreal events unfolding frantically. This is reserved for science-fiction, but this is not science fiction, neither is it realistic at all. Look... there is a part when someone says "if things bla, bla, bla, then he would have gone to CNN"!! Let's all laugh out loud!!!! Yeah, as if there remained ANY media that does not belong to, or has already been bought by those who really rule at this awful decadent times we're living in. Come on! Don't waste your time. There are better things to do.

La señal
(2007)

Average film noir
I went watch this flick with the expectation of recreating the Argentine of the fifties -an Argentine long forever gone-. I was born at the beginning of the 60's and had the opportunity to meet quite a prosperous country. Quite different from the piece of s**t that military first and politicians afterward (especially the latter), made of it. So, all in all, the film kept me quite expectant in my seat; not that I fulfilled any of my expectations, because -let's admit it- it is incredibly difficult to make such recreation, and it was not done at all. The camera takes are without exception quite narrow, focused on some part of an old building, rarely letting the sky be seen, and on a very nice fleet of collectible old cars (that MUST have been expensive!). But again, let's be fair, only Hollywood multimillionaire budgets can accomplish such thing. Now for the script: The script is quite mediocre. To such extent that it is unpredictable because it just ends at an unpredictable point, a point at which you could have added one more hour of excellent script. This is definitely not "El Aura". "El Aura" -I got comment on it- is film noire at its absolutely best and you should see it. This one... it can be watched. But only if there's something about the film that interests you beforehand. Else pass.

Sin City
(2005)

This is very sick film product of very sick directors
Well, it's really hard to fulfill the 10 lines for this nauseous crap. The seal of Tarantino is undoubtedly present in this rubbish full of perverted scenes which by the way consist of permanent slaughtering and just and only that, because the freaky mind of these people (they're not people, but however you still use that word) can't make it any better. Why so successful then? Because most people are nearly as sick as the directors of this s**t, only that they do not have the economical means or the required level of sociopathy, necessary to deliver these kinds of perversions; all they can "achieve" is to score a 10 for this crap. I can assure you that if you reader have some decency left, you just don't want your children to ever watch this kind of movie, which by the way does deliver consequences. I'm not here to tell you what this consequences are; just get a newspaper.

Match Point
(2005)

Deeply, Terribly Disturbing. Clearly Woody Allen's Best Film.
I have my own list of the best films I have watched, and on most of them I usually vote a 9... because there can always be a better film. Now this one's clearly a 10. Also, make no mistake, this is definitely the best film Allen has made. I guess it's the pinnacle of his career, and I'll be glad to be mistaken if he ever does better than this. For your convenience I'll divide the two hour film in four quarters of 30 minutes length each: First and second quarters keep your attention up pretty good. The photography is excellent, the same as the social environment shown, and some very disturbing ideas are subtly put on the table. By the middle of the film you still don't know however if it goes for the gold, the silver or the bronze, however you know it is already getting one. Third quarter becomes a little bit dull, but prepare for the last 30 minutes because you'll eat your bench up. And the best is yet to come, because the ending...OH, MY, THE ENDING!!! You just cannot imagine... Terrible... Deeply, profoundly disturbing and unexpected. I can state that I have never watched a film with such ending, and most probable I never will. Well, I don't think there's much left to say; Woody Allen has given me an incredible surprise. Two very big thumbs all way up for Match Point.
