Rock Star
(2001)

No real surprises, but a solid presentation.
Nothing really unpredictable in this movie, but a solid flick in all respects. Everything from acting to cinematography was solid. Not a perfectly linear plot line, but there wasn't anything you couldn't see coming. Perhaps a tad melodramatic at points, but again, a fairly decent movie none the less. Definitely worth checking out. If in doubt of what film to rent over the weekend, give this a go. Though you may not feel like running out and buying it, I found it to be quite worth while.

Ghosts of Mars
(2001)

Pee yew!!! What stinks?? Oh, it's just the movie.
As you've probably guessed by now, GoM isn't all that $hit hot. I think that this movie holds the record for disapointing me right off the bat with the hokiest looking sets. In this day in age, we STILL have sets that look like something out of the original Star Trek TV seriese. tsk tsk tsk. Here's a brief summary: Acting, directing, music, plot, makeup, editing, sets, costumes, special effects: abysmal Natasha Henstridge: HOT! Jason Statham: Cool! All else is under par with, say, Sesame Street. And why on earth (or mars, depending on how you wanna look at it) did the villians look like that?? Is that to further humiliate Goths?? I for one am insulted. When one considderes people like Orson Welles who lied about his age so that he could study theater in Europe and then people like Carpenter, what can he say?? "I took a course, so let's make some movies!" This film falls short of even being classified as entertainment let alone cinema! It mihgt have benefited more had Ice Cube had acted (well, about as much as can be expected from him) a little less like a "gangsta" and a little more...like....anything other than that!! I shudder to think that that far into the future people will not possess a more sophisticated intelect than: "Das right motha f*****!" Sigh, but alas, has Carpenter EVER created anything worthy of our attention?? So why should he start now??

Ran
(1985)

Shakespeare was on the right track.
Akira Kurosawa's rendition of Shakespeare's King Lear. Tatsuya Nakadai is brilliant as Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Lear) as the King who divides his kingdom up amongst his sons, which results in them trying to force him off of the land. Beautiful cinematography and awe inspiring battle scenes make this film a pleasure to watch visually. Authentic looking sets and costumes only further the experience. Directing and editing are top notch, but Kurosawa would surely settle for nothing short of perfection. Some impressive stunts on horses occur throughout. Simply outstanding in EVERY respect.

The Poseidon Adventure
(1972)

Unlike Titanic, this film didn't belly up.
This is what every disaster movie should be! The hero isn't some ripped moron leading people through outrageous obstacles while shooting bad guys and what not. It's a plain and simple movie about survival. Reminds me a little of 12 Angry Men in some scenes, but it lends to the movie well. I mean, how would u react if you were trapped in a sinking ship with a revrend, a cop and a hooker and a singer?? Superb acting contributed by some, and not so out standing provided by some as well. Hackman & Borgnine never miss. Music is a cut above, but I would expect no less from John Williams. Some gripping moments will surely grasp (if at nothing else) your sense of pitty for these people. Later remade as Daylight with Stalone and met with a less successful story. Over all, well done.

Die Another Day
(2002)

Why won't they just let Bond retire?
Okay, here we are at the 20 something Bond film in 40 years, and you know what? He's showing every one of those years. It has now come to special effects, cool cars, crazy gizmos and chicks that Bond has become synonomis with. With this installment of Bond, it draws uncomfortably close to the spin off Austin Power and Our Man Flint films. I mean, they go as far as to put a giant "Lazer" into space which has been dubbed "Icarus" which will harness the suns power to shoot a superheated beam at the surface of the earth, unless, the earth pays us, a heft ransom. hmmmmm, let's see, didn't Dr. Evil already teach us that space lazers don't work?? If not, then how about Blofeld in Diamonds are Forever, or Alec Trevelyan in GoldenEye?? AHHHH, havn't we have enough space lazers yet?? Diamond-faced Zao isn't scoring any point with me either. These villians seem to grow in idiocy along with their inventions. I long for the good old days when Bond was about being a spy, not a one-man army. We've reached the point where I no longer eagerly await the next Bond film, for I know there is no way that it will in this day in age live up to the Sean Connery Bond. Not a prayer. As the plots grow more far out and idiotic, the explosions get bigger, his dodads become more unbelievable, and the overall depth of the character and plot grow thin. Sad. Don't go out of your way to see this one.

Gormenghast
(2000)

It's so hard to find outstanding villians these days.
WOW! Outstanding in every respect. Original, bold, fresh, topped off by outstanding acting by all, but most notably, Christopher Lee. One of the BBC's FINEST. Setting and costumes are impressive and unique to say the least. Cinematography once again, worth mentioning. Nothing mundane here, all around impressive. Characters, unlike most of the crud we get from Hollywood have some depth, which was more than welcome with me. It's so rare that characters actually capture you for their uniqueness; my personal favotire is Mr. Steerpike. All you have to do to see what I mean by villian with depth is watch this, and then something like Die Another day. This character relies on his witts rather than his muscles. I wanted so much for him to achieve his goal, but then realized...well, you didn't think I would tell you everything did you?? Watch it, a truly remarkable film.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare
(1991)

I remain convinced that the entire Freddy seriese is a comedy.
Man, as if the 1st one wasn't bad enough, they had to go on to make this one!!! Oh MAN!!! Some directors should know when to quit. They would save themselves a lot of embarassment. This movie was a nightmare...just not in the sense that they would have liked. It has absolutely NO redeeming qualities worth mentioning. This was the FIRST movie that I actually laughed out loud because the acting was SO bad.

Jason X
(2001)

Had they left the lens cap on, it would have been an improvement.
Jason X is a movie devoid of any sense of logic other than senseless killing. There is no emotion to be seen from any of actors (if that's what you can call them) and not to mention the lame special effects. It seems that the seriese has become so stretched that they are in dire need to start stealing ideas from more successful childrens programming. Trans Metal Jason, please. Acting is sererely underpar...too...say...the closing credits. Special effects are simply and lame. The most pleasing were the tiresome explosions. Camera work was frightful. Frightfully uninspired that is. Nothing but simple angles, and 1 or 2 classic Hollywood 80's slasher horror enemy-behind-the-helpless-females angles. Plot...there was one?? It takes place in the future on a ship that whos population seems to exist for just one purpose. To be killed. What other conclusion cold one draw as 50% of the people are killed all within 10 minutes. You might be asking where DID it make up that one point?? Well, I'll tell you. I'm a sucker for a pretty face, and a hot bod, which is precisely ALL that this movie has to offer. Don't watch it.

Bowling for Columbine
(2002)

Got death??
A very worth while way to spend the evening. Should definitely be viewed by all, if not for the almost enlightening, albeit shocking content, then for the entertainment value, although the latter is superfluous by comparison. An in depth exploration as to why America has such a high total of people killed as a result of lax gun control laws. I won't spoil any of it, but I found it very educational, frightening, and entertaining all at once. Perhaps one of the most important films to be made since Citizen Kane. Pity it'll never even be nominated for an Oscar.

Cool Hand Luke
(1967)

If you don't fit in, shake the world.
Cool Hand Luke is a movie that has a lot to offer the avid movie go'er. Everything from unique cinematography, to awe inspiring acting. Cool Hand Luke is firmly planted on the ground, with real people, and I guess that's why I love it so much. The difficult life of a chain gang, and how the social infrastructure that the prisoners have is fascinating. George Kennedy is fantastic! You can't help but appreciate the love life motif riddled throughout the film, and afterwards, you can't help but feel good about yourself. A definite must see.
