Caravan

An RDB show
An average movie, in each and every aspect of the film making. Except, melodious and unforgettable songs composed by Rahul Dev Burman helped by Majrooh Sultanpuri, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle. A crispy screenplay, editing and characterization save an ordinary plot but if that was not makers' priority, they should have considered having some comical sequences and a couple of seasoned comic actors added. That could have helped this movie being a good product. But excellent music certainly makes this average movie a cult. The other notable contribution is by Asha Parekh.

A perfect and memorable tribute to 'the' Rishi Kapoor
First of all, let me appreciate and congratulate movie's creative team (or whoever thought of this), for initiating and executing the idea of having two artists for a single role. That was a brave move. Secondly, kudos to the director, screenplay writer, editor and 'the' Paresh Rawal for presenting the story in a such a flawless manner and perfectly complementing this first ever experiment on Hindi cinema screen. Not for a second, I thought, two artists are playing single role of Brij Gopal Sharma. I was emotionally attached to this movie because of Rishi Kapoor but full marks to Paresh Rawal for filling in the void, perfectly. I am not sure who could have done justice to this role, and this experiment, than Paresh Rawal. Everyone else; Juhi Chawla, Suhail Nayyar, Sheeba Chaddha and Satish Kaushik, has chipped in well. A perfect and memorable tribute to Rishi Kapoor, through a well-made movie.

A brave & well crafted movie
First of all cudos to the makers for selecting this subject for their project. And then, for developing the plot into a two & a half hours long feature film. And lastly, for executing it with precision. It would be an injustice if Rajkumar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Seema Bhargava Pahwa, Chum Darang and Sheeba Chaddha are not given due credit for their brilliant performances. Society needs more movies on varied & critical subjects, like this one. Certainly deserves about half a dozen trophies/awards but we all know it won't.

An engrossing drama
Many of us may have find it difficult to go with the continuity but there was no better way than creating the product as it has been. I must appreciate The director and the editor for flawless presentation of such complex plot. All three lead actors are spot on. Ranbir Kapoor has almost full length role instead of a cameo, as claimed through publicity material and film credits. This one, in my view, is one of his best performances, if not the best.

Kishore Sahu, at his best
A beautifully crafted movie, specially, how Suraj's character has been developed and enacted by Kishore Sahu. His role has negative shades, but he still is a kindhearted man. Kishore Sahu has wonderfully portrayed this multilayered character. A relatively young Nimmi does well. Premnath is in his usual self. Shahgul, as Meera, is wonderful too. S. D. Burman has created wonderful melodies with Lata Mangeshkar.

Why this colaveri di?
I am not sure what they planned to make but ended up creating a crap, a classic example of wasting financiers' or a bank's money. They tried to fool public by casting 'media announced' stars in order to force public to watch this. The idea and screenplay were so outdated that I don't feel like blaming those superstars. But I feel pity for Girish Kulkarni. I failed to understand why one need such a prolific talent for such a meager role.

It's My Life
(2020)

A good story wasted on Hindi cinema screen
The movie has a very good premise but poor screenplay followed by everything else, except Nana Patekar's performance as dominating patriarch, ruined it. Harman Baweja and Genelia both look cute but that's not how an actor should be gauged. Harman is as good as a stone. Barring a scene or two, Genelia acted as if Muskaan is dying to make water but cannot. Advisable to watch only if you are a Nana Patekar fan.

A Bold and Brilliant movie
B. R. Ishara was known for, making movies on and, his handling of bold subjects. This is yet another brilliant piece of his work. The movie has reasonably a good story with able support from screenplay. The suspense is intriguing enough, indeed. Dr. Lagoo is the king here, well supported by Raj Kiran and Navin Nischol. Other characters have limited opportunities or were not even required. Babla's music has some good compositions with a couple of songs sung by Kishore Kumar. I personally like the way dialogues have been written and narrated on screen. This movie certainly deserves a watch.

Contract Marriage with slightly a different take
This is a good movie to watch, once. Bollywood has tonnes of movies made around subject of contract marriage, but none has such a different take, as far as my memory goes. Screenplay could have been crispier. The biggest mistake was to cast Shailendra Singh in the lead with Rekha. We all know how prolific singer and a handsome man he was/is, but as a lead hero, it was too much to ask from him. Utpal Dutt, Rekha and Asrani are good, as always. Bindu, Aruna Irani, Sujit Kumar had no substantial role to play. Overall, certainly deserves a watch.

Torbaaz
(2020)

A brave movie
Utilizing Sanjay Dutt and Rahul Dev in such a way, is courageous, indeed. Aishan Jawaid malik, who plays Baaz, and Rehan Shaikh as Sadiq, are outstanding too. Director Girish Malik should be complemented for his choice of subject, however, handeling of this subject could have been better. A big salute to Sanjay Dutt for accepting such movie, which is very much unlike 'a Sanjay Dutt movie'.

Kaaran
(1981)

Good movie with good storyline
This is a good movie but entirely an underrated one. In fact, B. R. Ishara was/is never acknowledged for his contribution to the Indian film industry. His movies were always ahead of their times but termed as 'Bold movies' those days, as if they were porn movies, simply at the behest of the 'elite class' film fraternity but barring a scene or two or a reference or two, they always had good, offbeat, new, and different subjects. As far as technicalities go, you may find some glitches in screenplay or the overall presentation but then almost all the movies during those days had technical flaws. This movie certainly deserves a watch.

Mumbai Saga
(2021)

All predictable
And then they cry for piracy. Who is going to watch such movie in cinema hall? You cannot make movies on the same storyline, one after the other, and fool the audience. Irony is, it does not even have required action, despite being one for.

Jyot Jale
(1973)

A message to parents and teachers
A brilliant movie with exceptional storyline. However, it looks to be a half-cooked product primarily because the deteriorated print available on social media is not the complete movie, otherwise you don't expect such poor efforts by the prolific Satyen Bose. I am sure a VHS or DVD of this movie was never created. We certainly need such movies in present times as well.

Sur: The Melody of Life
(2002)

A Beautiful Movie
That's the movie for you. I always admired music of this movie but never got a chance to watch it. I watched it today and regrated why I missed this for so many years. That's a brilliant piece of work by Tanuja Chandra, topped up by great Nida Fazli lyrics and another great M. M. Kreem scores. Lucky Ali always had his limitations but here, he is unbelievable, I never expected such a refined performance from him. Gauri Karnik got her opportunity but failed. Other artists supported well. This movie definitely deserves a watch.

Safed Jhoot
(1978)

Good movie, deserves a watch
A 'never heard' but good movie from the legend, Basu Chatterjee. The movie has Basu Da's trademark authenticity but lacks his charisma. It's a complete family drama with occasional fun moments but not an out & out fun movie despite the plot having 100% potential for being one. All lead actors are spot on, no one is over the top. Ashok Kumar and Deven Verma stands apart. All said & done, it definitely deserves a watch.

Coolie No.1
(2020)

What is No.1 in this movie...???
Dear DD, why do you need to remake a movie? Have you ran out of good ideas? First Judwaa and now this..!! You used to say "meri film dekhane ke liye dimag ghar par chhod ke aao", now you leave your 'dimag' at home while making a movie.???

Only for those who wants good cinema
A brilliant piece of work by a newcomer. Kudos to director Girish Malik for venturing into meaningful cinema instead of opting for the crap being created by so called 'big production houses'.

The movie has a mix of everything; good story, a civic message, good music, fantastic performances by known & unknown faces, a bit of light hearted sequences & dialogues, some action, scenic locals, excellant visuals and scenes to make it an 'A' certified Movie.

Definitely deserves a watch.

Real face of the Indian politicians & media houses nexus
That's a movie one must watch to explore real face of the nexus between politicians media houses, in India. When you watch news channels these days, you realize every frame, every situation, every comment/dialogue of the movie, is spot on. The movie also advices us to not to believe or swayed by what electronic media airs day in day out, blindly and must use our conscience before we come to a conclusion.

No word for Amitabh Bachchan and Paresh Rawal. Both these acting power houses are beyond camparisions or praises or even criricism, for that matter. This movie is about Kiccha Sudeep and Reitesh Deshmukh's towering performances. Sudeep is a newcomer for Hindi audience but he shows what a fine performer he is. Reitesh proves he is excellant with serious roles as well. Able and apt support from Rajat Kapoor and Mohnish Bahl. I was really amazed by camera work in most of the movie.

A not to be missed movie from the genius 'RGV'.

Tyaag
(1977)

The S.D. Burman show
You may have watched thousands of movies on this story line but take a risk to watch this movie only if you like good music & songs, that too from the one & only S.D. Burman, who presumably had his last release with this film.

Dil Ki Rahen
(1973)

A movie way ahead of it's times
Arguably, the most underrated Bollywood movie of all times, for it's powerful content. Apart from brilliant acting performances by Rehana Sultana, Sulochana Latkar and Rakesh Pandey, the movie has scintillating and evergreen compositions by 'The Legend' Madan Mohan, penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri and wonderfully rendered by Lata Mangeshkar & Manna Day, Such as; 'Rasm-e-Ulfat Ko', 'Aap Ki Baten Karen', 'Apne Suron Mein' and 'Sharab Ka Sahara'. Those who loves content and melodious music, should not miss this.

Shikari
(1963)

Bad movie with wonderful music
This is not a movie worth one's time except for may be the exceptional G.S. Kohli music. Watch it only if you like good old music otherwise listen to the Music and let it go. The song 'Tumko Piya Dil Diya' is a treat for your eyes with graceful dance performances by evergreen Helen & Ragini, one of Travancore sisters.

Aakrosh
(1980)

A perfect match of everything in film making
You can write a thesis on this movie but less said is more. What I liked the most is the story, screenplay and characterization because Smita Patil, being in only one scene of a 2+ hours long movie, overshadowed stellar performances by Late Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah. I am speechless about Om Puri as he was in this movie. The movie left me wondering why today's film makers and STARS, shout so much so, about their products?

Shankar Hussain
(1977)

A daring subject but lackluster movie
A wonderful movie and a courageous attempt for those days. Everything is perfect except acting from lead artists. This is Gajanand Jagirdar's best work, Dr. Lagoo never misfired, he is par excellence. However, Kanwaljeet Singh, Madhu Chanda and Suhail could not capitalize on their chances, they are simply wooden faced. Khayyam has delivered classics such as; 1) Kahni Ek Masson Nazuk Si Ladki and 2) Aap Yun Faaslon Se and 3) Apne Aap Raton Mein. Movie business houses & tycoons of these days can never put an attempt on such a subject.

Aaj Ka Daur
(1985)

A Kader Khan show
This is not a great movie but I will always remember it for the Late Kader Khan saheb's acting and his dialogues. I believe AKD was his best work as an actor and a dialogue writer.

Mr. & Mrs. '55
(1955)

Probably, the first Hindi movie on contract marriage plot
An amazing movie based on contract marriage theme. It may sound like Manchali but both are quite different movies and this one is a more catchy & serene.

I was under total control of the movie until it got over. In fact I was simply swept away by the story, innovative screenplay, Abrar Alvi's dialogues especially one liners, Madhubala's stunning beauty and her acting too, alongside great Johny Walker, Gurudutt's direction, Majrooh Sultanpuri's lyrics and O.P.Nayyar's unforgettable music with wonder full songs one after the other; 1) Thandi Hawa Kaali Ghata, 2) Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji, 3) Aeji Dil par Hua Aisa Jadoo, 4) Neele Aasmani, 5) Udhar Tum Haseen Ho Idhar Hum Jawan Hain, 6) Chal Diye Banda Nawaz, 7) Ab To Ji Hone Laga Kiski Surat Ka saamna, 8) Pritam Aan Milo (by Geeta Dutt) and 9) Meri Duniya Lut Rahi Thi Aur main Khamosh Tha. Everything was so perfect. A sheer entertainment, I must say. As long as you don't watch this movie, you are missing something in your life.
