Swingers
(1996)

Cocktails, dreams, problems and friends...
The first time, I saw Swingers by chance and I felt in love for it. Low budget, niche film, young actors, acute dialogs, a successful recipe. Who has never suffered from love? Who has never dreamed to became an actor? Who has never experimented an hard landing? Swingers is this: cocktails, dreams, problems and friends. And where did Mike & Trent try to solve their problems? In Las Vegas! A cool city, a mix of people, lights and moneys. But the happiness is not there, every place, every pub, every parties quoting Charles "...Is dead anyways". Why? Because, basically, love lacks. But not dreams and hopes. So see Swingers, it will be good.

Lady in the Water
(2006)

A game rule in a modern key
Lady in the water, that's an intelligent game rule. After "the village" M.N.Shyamalan directs a modern, beautiful, fable about a nymph who tries to come back to her world not before to have contacted an important writer, whose book will change the world's destiny. Each occupant of the condominium in which the nymph establishes a contact with the human world by means of a pool could be part of a very important game rule. Each person, could be a "special" one, with particular and beyond suspicion ability. This film tell us, if it can be necessary, that the world as we known it, as we live it, needs a turn, a benefit shaking that leaves back all the wars and injustices. Shyamalan's direction is nice and enough "slow" while Paul Giamatti show another time his skill and versatility. My mark: 8/10.

The Princess Bride
(1987)

Are you sad? Well, see this movie...
The story is quite simple.

A young woman (Buttercup) is engaged to be married with a Prince (Humperdinck) that she doesn't love. The true love, Westley, after some years of vanishing, come back to her but many dangers are waiting our heroes.

So, what's the particularity of this film? Certainly, the variety of characters, for all the tastes!!

As example we can consider Vizzini: "the mind". His movements, his loquacity make him a funny caricature, antidote to sadness! As well as Miracle Max, a crazy greedy alchemist with good intentions. Then, Fezzik, Inigo, Westley... Oh yes, each of us can identify oneself with one of them.

98 minutes in which we can escape from the reality (and his problems) and to dream a better word.

10/10

"As you wish"...

The Shining
(1980)

Jack Nicholson at his best
Several horror films have been produced in cinema's history but how many of them really does it scare us?

I quote: "The Exorcist", "A Nightmare On Elm Street" and... "The Shining" obviously.

Perfectly directed by Stanley Kubrick, "The Shining" tells about an hotel infested by worried ghosts who look for revenge against the guardians in the winter season. Only mentally strong person can resist; Jack Torrance (Nicholson) is not one of them.

His metamorphosis is practically made perfect by the intense performance of Jack Nicholson. His glances, his movements, his pucker forehead involve the spectator and create a terrifying ambiance.

Lost in Translation
(2003)

A documentary about Tokyo
In short it's not a bad film.

Filmed intentionally with slowly rhythms to improve film's reality, "Lost In Translation" specially emphasize Tokyo city, its entertainments, agitations, its modernity and so on. In fact "Production Design" is well edited.

Bill Murray is tailored for Bob Harris's role and Scarlett Johansson is a young cinema promise.

Lastly this film teach us that it's never too much late to find the true love ;-).

My vote: 7/10.

Seabiscuit
(2003)

A man and his horse...
Love permits extraordinary things...this is the message proposed by Seabiscuit.

I mean not only the love between Tobey (Red Pollard) and his "Seabiscuit" but also the filial relationship between Tobey and Jeff (Charles Howard) that allow the first to work quietly and to express his potentiality. Red is able to cure an injured horse with passion and love resulting in a clamorous victory.

Excellent the Cinematography and Underestimated by Academy Awards.

My vote: 8/10

K-PAX
(2001)

An introspective travel
Yes, among the last films that I have seen K-PAX is what it has excited me of more.

Besides the beautiful cinematography in which light is used wisely and the exciting sound track that articulate the various instants of the film I want to remark the extraordinary performances of Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges.

Jeff joins perfectly in psychiatrist's part whereas Kevin is able to recite with glances leaving range over the introspection and the imagination. Prot is like an angel in the Robert Porter's body who arrive on earth to do the well things.

The questions that leaves K-PAX's ending constitutes the start of a imaginary travel....towards....K-PAX!

My vote: 10

Viola bacia tutti
(1998)

An on-the-road comedy
What perhaps more attracts of Giovanni Veronesi's film is the trip with the camper undertaken by the three "romantic" friends Samuele, Max and Nicola "swing" to gratify to the beautiful thief "Viola" of which are madly in love.

The stolen coins constitutes a pretext to bathe in the country crossing nudist villages, farms, pastures to end on a beach.

The trip of Samuele, Max and Nicola ended with the money loss but with the birth of a new friendship: maybe this was really their purpose.

I find particularly guessed the dialect mix ( Roman (Samuele), Tuscan (Max) and of Potenza ( Nicola) ) that contributes to render exhilarant the film.

For me "Viola bacia tutti" deserves a 7.

Così è la vita
(1998)

A comedy about life
Second film by the Aldo,Giovanni & Giacomo trio released one year after the unexpected success of "Tre uomini e una gamba". I like both the scenery, partly settled outdoor in the beautiful cornice of "Gran Sasso d'Italia", and the melancholy inspiration, a peculiarity of Aldo, Giovanni & Giacomo films. The title "Così è la vita" reflects mixing and matching of situations that everyone can experiment during own life. It's funny the mass revenge organized by the "angel" Clara ("Marina Massironi") that shows as the injustices will be punished from god.

My vote is 8.
