Sylvia
(2003)

I wept.
I wept because this movie is so bad. I could literally feel my manliness draining from my body to hear some of the lines. I remember thinking to myself, "Now where are those cyanide tablets." Don't be a fool, go armed into the theater. Be polite, and remember to bring a silencer so you don't disturb the other artists when you put yourself out of your misery.

Since IMDB wants me to have ten lines in my comment, I'll bring up another point. The script isn't even poetic. It's like the script writers from a soap opera decided to come up with a story and sat up all night to write it. On the plus side, there is a hint of nudity. One good thing about the movie, is that the music is a dead give away for what we're supposed to be feeling. When she tells you you just didn't understand the subtleties of the movie, you can bluff intelligently.

The Weather Underground
(2002)

Sad, but Important Film
The people in the film made many astute points. Rudd points out toward the end that violence is seen by the public as mental illness or some other chaos unless perpetrated by the government--in that case, violence is normal. I'm glad the Weathermen existed. How flat and hopeless the history of activism would be today without them. It seems that nowadays there is a stereotype of the college leftist activist as being a weak member of a highly privileged class who simply feels guilty about the privilege but is ultimately all talk--wants to keep his wealth in the end. The Weathermen defy this stereotype, putting themselves in full danger of losing everything and accomplishing incredible strategic feats against the government like freeing Timothy Leary and bombing government buildings. I suspect that such a defiance of stereotype is why I, who am college educated and a leftist activist type, never knew the names of the Weathermen, while I knew the names of the most prominent Black Panthers, like Eldridge Cleaver and Bobby Seale. It is a movement almost entirely ignored, even by leftist academics. As the film wraps up, one thing that is telling is that none of the featured Weathermen sold out and became capitalists like so many members of SDS. They're all currently doing things for the good of society even if they're no longer bombing buildings. Also, we learn from the film that people didn't simply lose interest in the left and anti-war/anti-capitalist activism, preferring to embrace the glorious consumerism of Reagan's America. The government beat it out of people. Particularly, the government killed the Weathermen's effectiveness when they forced them underground. Maybe the reason we don't have mass uprisings in the U.S. as in other countries is because our government is the most effectively repressive, it being the most powerful in the world.

In the Cut
(2003)

boobies! (sorry for the spoiler)
SPOILERS - Meg Ryan is totally hot in this movie and plays the part of a minx very well. The best parts of the movie were round and bouncy. It really was little more than a Red Shoe Diaries episode that had a larger budget, toss in a little bit of a cop show(take your pick) and you have this perfectly average soft core mystery. The highlights of the movie include tossed salad and some really hot scenes with Meg.

I give this perfectly bland movie a 5/10.

Bubba Ho-Tep
(2002)

Certainly not as good as its rating
I saw this movie because it came to town and the rating on IMDB was 8.2 at the time. While the movie was pretty good in several respects, the movie lacked something. It's hard to define exactly what it is that it lacked, the acting was good, the script was good, and the plot was good. The single funniest parts are in the opening sequences as well, making the movie slide a downward spiral. I guess the only thing missing was that bit of movie magic that makes a good movie a legend. I give it a 6 as it is better than your average movie, but nothing exceptional.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1
(2003)

Awe inspiring
After convincing my wife to go and see this movie (and trust me - it took some doing), we drove to the local movie theater. From the second that the movie started, our eyes were glued to the screen as we watched Tarantino unfold a beautiful movie. The cinematography is worth the admission price alone, yet above that there is a great plot, worthy of being on the same shelf as Kurasawa. Everything else about this movie - the fight scenes, the music, the pacing... exceeds expectations and more. I can not praise this movie enough, and rated this movie a perfect 10. Nothing could have been done to improve upon this movie.

Hulk
(2003)

the incredible dud
This movie just so happened to suck eggs. I'm a fan of comic books, (although I never read the hulk) however, this movie didn't capture the feel of a good comic book movie (see X-men II for an example of a good one). The CGI was pretty terrible as well, and that's all I really went to go see. The protagonist was a lifeless character whos flacid acting and terrible voice did nothing to move the movie forward. The villian in this movie was also a failure. It seemed that the writer has some deep seated emotional problems regarding his(or her) father. On the plus side, the directing could have been worse... but not much. All in all a terrible movie.

Made
(2001)

Remarkably unremarkable.
I really don't know what else to say other than the one line summary. There were a couple of flat one liners, a couple of uninspired actors, and a couple of lame plot twists. I've happily given this movie a rating of 5 since its been so average in every way. That one character sure is annoying though (you'll know which one I'm talking about when you see it). It's like a chick's kind of guy movie.

Musa
(2001)

Musa delivers.
I saw this movie at the Seattle Independent Film Festival, and as far as epic movies go, I have never seen its equal (Korean or otherwise). The cinematography is excellent, and regardless of what the other comments say, I think the acting was great. The movie was long enough to have character development, which is something that is sadly lacking in American cinema. The plot is wonderful, and I firmly believe that if you like epic movies like 'Braveheart' and 'Gladiator' you will love this film. Personally the movie reminded me very strongly of Kurosawa and his best film (again, in my opinion) 'The Seven Samurai'. I only wish this movie was playing again so that I could pay the entry fee again to support this incredible director. I give it a 10 out of 10, because this movie is lacking in nothing.

Possession
(2002)

Wow. Talk about bad acting.
This movie is pathetic in so many ways that I might excede the 1,000 word limit if I cared enough about this movie to write more than 100 words. This movie is terrible in plot, acting, and my god, the poetry was terrible. It would be posssible to enjoy this movie if and only if you are a freshman in college trying for a degree in English. Feel free to look up pathetic in a thesaurus, and any one of those synonyms will accurately describe this movie. It could have been worse, however, they could have cast Patrick Swayze as the lead male.

Nénette et Boni
(1996)

It put me to sleep.
This movie put me to sleep. The only highlight of the movie is in the last five minutes... but I won't describe it here. The only reason I can think of to see this movie is to support your local independent movie theater. The acting is pretty tame as well.

UHF
(1989)

This movie changed my life.
This movie taught me that absolutely nothing is sacred, and that anything is fair game in the pursuit of comedy. This is an incredible movie, on the same level as Return of the Jedi or any of the Indiana Jones movies. The short clips in the movie are reminiscent of the comic genius of the early Saturday Night Live skits. The homage paid to MAD magazine in the form of Uncle Nutzy's Funhouse is another selling point... anyone who praises MAD magazine in as subtle a way will always get my vote. Go see it immediately if you haven't before, or even if you have.

X2
(2003)

Simply Marvelous
I must say that this movie is going to be one of my top ten favorite movies of this year. The movie has a fine plot that would stand above many of the original comic books stories, the characters are believable, the action scenes are incredible and the special effects are second to none(except maybe the matrix sequel that is coming out soon). I gave this movie a 9, if only because the movie was perfectly in-line with the original comic books. The opening scene with nightcrawler has already made it to the top five action scenes I've ever seen in American movies. I can't possibly praise this movie enough... Go out and see it for yourself. This is definately a big screen must, the movie will lose a large amount of its appeal on a small television.

Eraserhead
(1977)

A heart-warming tale of the challenges and rewards of parenting.
Above all, this movie is a comedy. I suggest taking the family out for a refreshing Sunday movie after church and seeing this film. Children of all ages can appreciate the comedic antics of the little baby, and adults can understand a mothers desire for what is best for her baby. You may have to do a little digging, but I'm sure you can find this great out of print movie available online.
