Abigail
(2024)

Melissa Barrera and Kathryn Newton demonstrate their acting talent and hold high their titles of scream queens.
"Abigail" is a successful vampire film that manages to mix horror and black humor in the style of classics like "Fright Night" and "The Lost Boys", in addition to being refreshing and superior to the bitter "Renfield" released last year. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett team up again to achieve another success in their film career, after "Scream" (2022) and "Scream VI" they also turn to the protagonist of these, the scream queen Melissa Barrera for star in "Abigail", she again achieves a prominent role as final girl, being sweet and brave (showing that her absence weighed on "Scream 7" after her unjustified dismissal), in addition to Barrera, another scream queen is also in the cast: Kathryn Newton, who demonstrates her acting skills in a dizzy character. In the titular character we have the no longer promising actress, but the established Alisha Weir, who provides an iconic character for horror films and is endearing. Dan Stevens, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud (in his last acting role), Giancarlo Esposito and Matthew Goode all give good performances in their supporting roles. Aaron Morton does a great job as director of photography, achieving his second success this year after the majestic "The First Omen", and pays tribute to the cinematography of "Ready or Not", a film made by the aforementioned directors of "Abigail ". Melissa Barrera and Kathryn Newton demonstrate their acting talent and hold high their titles of scream queens, along with them Alisha Weir joins to bring us the instant classic "Abigail."

Un Actor Malo
(2023)

"Un actor malo" is an intense masterpiece.
"Un actor malo" is one of the best Mexican films of recent years, an intense drama with overtones of suspense that managed to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout its duration. The script is excellent, it makes you wonder who of the two protagonists is lying, the drama and suspense emerge in each scene until you know the truth and the results that it entails. The work of the film's director is majestic, the leading actors: Alfonso Dosal and Fiona Palomo provide outstanding and natural performances, an adrenaline of feelings emanates from both. The cinematography is magnificent and is brutal in accentuating the drama. "Un actor malo" is an intense masterpiece.

The First Omen
(2024)

"The First Omen" is a formidable film, the best horror film of the year so far.
"The First Omen" is a film that can only be described positively, from wonderful, incredible, great, but the most accurate and correct is that the film is a masterpiece. The script is a prequel that tells us the story of Damien Thorn's birth, and it does so in an effective and gloomy way, at times it seems predictable but soon there are wonderfully designed twists, as well as including tribute scenes to the first film from 1976. The director Arkasha Stevenson's work is first class, she tells this story in a slow way that is full of emotions, together with the editing work, the film gives a result of art cinema, with the vein of current classics such as "The VVitch" (2015), "Heriditary" (2018) or "Suspiria" (2018) to name a few. The art direction and filming locations were carefully chosen, resulting in a visual delight that the cinematography manages to exalt in each scene. The costume design transports you to the beginning of the '70s, although sometimes it falls into anachronisms such as extras who wear costumes that belong to the mid- and late '70s and not the beginning of these, there is even disco music that in 1971 had not yet been played, an example is the classic "Daddy Cool" by Boney M. The soundtrack by Mark Korven is an auditory delight and evokes the soundtrack he made for "The VVitch" in 2015. The effects are well done, it is appreciated to be able to see old school special effects, with the exception of a couple of scenes that use digital effects but decent and moderately. The makeup effects are realistic and gloomy. The film, being a co-production between the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada and Serbia, provides elements that are reminiscent of Italian cinema from the '70s, in addition to paying tribute to classics such as "Rosemary's Baby" (1968), "Suspiria" (1977), "Possession" (1981) and remembering the atmosphere that "The Omen" trilogy gave a gift in its time. "The First Omen" is a formidable film, the best horror film of the year so far.

Kung Fu Panda 4
(2024)

"Kung Fu Panda 4" is an entertaining product without being anything wonderful.
"Kung Fu Panda 4" is a film that, without being anything wonderful, manages to entertain. The script achieves its goal in terms of entertaining, but it is not special in any way. The animation is average for much of the film's duration, but during the climax it becomes visually incredible. The characters from the previous films continue their course (although others are left aside) and the new ones have a certain charm, especially the villainess. The voice work of the cast gives good results as it is quite pleasant and matches the personalities of the characters. "Kung Fu Panda 4" is an entertaining product without being anything wonderful.

Vermines
(2023)

"Vermines" is a very good film that manages to give a message with social criticism.
"Vermines" is a more complex film than it seems at first glance, the script touches on topics such as gentrification in a French building inhabited by people of African and Arab descent. This type of racism and discrimination is constantly seen in the film and as social criticism it is added to spiders as an example of the animal kingdom that is affected by urbanization, thus emphasizing gentrification as a central theme. Within the horror and thriller genres, the film achieves interesting and distressing scenes. The main characters are endearing and you care about them. The cinematography achieves a great atmosphere along with the filming locations and the camera movements manage to accentuate the action captured on the screen. The cast is top-notch, each actor imbues their characters with their own style. The director does an elegant job, he knows perfectly well what he wants to tell and how to do it. "Vermines" is a very good film that manages to give a message with social criticism.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
(2024)

"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is a quite entertaining film and superior to its predecessor in many ways.
"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is a film that manages to be better than its predecessor. The script is entertaining and tells a story with an eighties feel in 2024. The New York atmosphere plays an important role and makes the film's visuals incredible. The cinematography is quite accurate, the director's work is of a good level and the cast gives good performances, both the actors from the original film and those presented in the predecessor achieve be nice in every scene. The special effects also improved compared to the last film, this time they look much more real. "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is a quite entertaining film and superior to its predecessor in many ways.

Alice in Terrorland
(2023)

"Alice in Terrorland" will be remembered, but as one of the worst horror films in history.
"Alice in Terrorland" is another adaptation of a children's novel to the horror genre, and the result is terrible. Speaking of the art direction and cinematography, the result is pleasant, but the director's work is bad, it seems non-existent, the actors try to give good performances but the terrible script fails to favor them. The costume design is simple, the soundtrack goes completely unnoticed and the horror and suspense elements are non-existent. The film totally fails in quality, in addition to being a sleeping pill throughout its duration. "Alice in Terrorland" will be remembered, but as one of the worst horror films in history.

Desaparecer Por Completo
(2022)

"Desaparecer por completo" is a complex horror cinematic experience, a synesthesia brought to the big screen.
"Desaparecer por completo" is one of the best Mexican horror films ever made and one of the most iconic of the current decade. The script has influences from "Ringu" and tells us a story of body horror and even folk horror, bringing pagan customs to the city, witchcraft and satanism are present, as well as the "nota roja" (red note) news so popular in Mexican newspapers take an important part in this film. Tribute is paid to the famous photographer Enrique Metinides, who in life artistically took photographs of deaths and catastrophes, from this man and with other tributes to George A. Romero, creator of the iconic zombies, the screenwriter Ricardo Aguado-Fentanes devised this story of a photographer who loses his five senses one by one after discovering that he is a victim of witchcraft, thus leading us to body horror and folk horror. Director Luis Javier Henaine does a wonderful job, carrying each scene of his film with suspense. The cinematography is incredible, with atmospheric lighting that, together with the art direction, immerses us more in the theme of death and it should be noted that it was filmed with an aspect ratio of 3:2, just like a newspaper photography and the camera movements are only presented in one important scene within this feature film. Cinematography also breaks the barriers of the movie screen to make us look through the eyes of the protagonist, losing the sense of sight along with him. The sound design is also masterful, mainly by becoming monoaural, leading us to become the protagonist and another victim who is losing the hearing. The performances are wonderful and full of feeling, Harold Torres emanates the emotions of his character and transmits them to the audience. "Desaparecer por completo" is a complex horror cinematic experience, a synesthesia brought to the big screen.

Noche de bodas
(2024)

"Noche de bodas" is a regular movie, to be seen only once.
"Noche de bodas" is a regular movie, a romantic comedy that manages to get some laughs, but in general it is soulless. The script and direction are by actor Osvaldo Benavides, a somewhat weak start within these roles in the art world, and he also stars in the film, as an actor he is very good. Ludwika Paleta plays a somewhat annoying character, but she does it with style. The cast includes veteran actresses such as Verónica Langer and Tony Marcín, it is a delight to see them in front of the camera showing their histrionic abilities. The cinematography and editing look like something out of a TV commercial, the music composed for the film is really bad. One scene shows computer-generated special effects for a few seconds and these are of the worst quality. "Noche de bodas" is a regular movie, to be seen only once.

Dune: Part Two
(2024)

As a result the film is incredible and visually stunning.
"Dune: Part 2" is a big-budget film, filmed in co-production between 8 countries: the United States, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Hungary, Jordan, New Zealand, Italy and the Gambia, resulting in an extraordinary production of great proportions. The cast is top-notch and gives remarkable performances, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Javier Bardem, Christopher Walken, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista and Josh Brolin shine in every scene demonstrating their histrionic abilities. Denis Villeneuve's work as a director is excellent, demonstrating his talent behind the cameras. The adaptation of the chapters taken to film from the book "Dune" by Frank Herbert are scripted by Denis Villeneuve himself together with Jon Spaihts, resulting in an epic story, although in some scenes it becomes long and in others it becomes very precipitated. The technical elements such as cinematography, sound design, costume design, editing and special effects are majestically achieved and are a visual delight. Although "Dune: Part 2" is a great film, it falls short of being a complete masterpiece and despite the critical praise that considers it superior to its predecessor, that is exaggerated. As a result the film is incredible and visually stunning.

Kimetsu no Yaiba Kizuna no Kiseki, Soshite Hashira Geiko e
(2024)

"Kimetsu no Yaiba Kizuna no Kiseki, Soshite Hashira Geiko e" is not a masterpiece, its script is simple but its animation is worth it.
"Kimetsu no Yaiba Kizuna no Kiseki, Soshite Hashira Geiko e" is the new film based on the manga and anime, a film whose animation is incredible but the script does not tell the viewer much, this is due to the union of a couple of broadcast episodes in the anime and that are presented as a new cinematographic installment, therefore, the editing usually gives confusing scenes and the story at one point in the film seems to have no reason to exist as such, becoming repetitive and incoherent, especially if you do not fully know the anime episodes and the idea behind putting a couple of episodes together as a "new" movie. "Kimetsu no Yaiba Kizuna no Kiseki, Soshite Hashira Geiko e" is not a masterpiece, its script is simple but its animation is worth it.

Todas menos tú
(2024)

"Todas menos tú" is an entertaining film that achieves its goal.
"Todas menos tú" is a romantic comedy that tells a simple story but entertains in every scene. The script is fun, offering a light and extremely entertaining comedy from start to finish. The cast gives good performances, highlighting Ricardo Abarca and Carolina Miranda. The director's work is confident and he captures what he wants on the screen. The cinematography is well done, it is aesthetic without being any avant-garde marvel in its field. The songs used in the film are wisely chosen, leaving behind the current reggaeton crap. "Todas menos tú" is an entertaining film that achieves its goal.

Argylle
(2024)

An entertaining film without further pretensions.
"Argylle" is a comedy of spy movies, although it is not a masterpiece, it manages to be entertaining. The script has interesting twists and turns and is well written with the exception of some implausible and exaggerated moments. The performances are good, highlighting that of Catherine O'Hara. The cinematography is accurate without being novel in any way. The special effects are poorly done in several scenes and that detracts from the film a bit. The best thing are the songs from the film that have quality and move away from the current generic pop. An entertaining film without further pretensions.

Madame Web
(2024)

"Madame Web" is a good movie that stands out from other superhero movies with better reviews.
"Madame Web" is a rarity within the Marvel Universe, a film with a more serious script and without the typical forced jokes every 30 seconds, it is difficult to understand the hate and low ratings when films from the same company with trite and repetitive stories have extremely high scores and enter the IMDb Top 250. This film has something different to tell and it does it excellently, mixing drama and suspense. The performances are good, the chemistry between the four protagonists is natural and realistic. The director's work is spot on. The cinematography has quality visual merits, the soundtrack goes perfectly with the image on screen, the digital special effects are few and that is appreciated, and they do not look unreal like in other films produced by the aforementioned comic books company. A notable error is the costume and production design, as they fail to faithfully portray the era in which the film is set and it seems like a mishmash of fashions and furniture. "Madame Web" is a good movie that stands out from other superhero movies with better reviews.

Baghead
(2023)

The script had potential and was not used, "Baghead" is a pretty weak film.
"Baghead" is a film whose trailer looks promising, however the film is quite simple and barely saves itself from being bad. The cast gives decent performances, the cinematography is well done without being outstanding, the digital special effects, which are few, are poorly done and the director's work manages to have merit by bringing to the screen a couple of effective suspense scenes, but then everything falls apart. It becomes boring, it loses suspense and the horror has no effect. For its part, the soundtrack, editing work and sound design go completely unnoticed. The script had potential and was not used, "Baghead" is a pretty weak film.

Poor Things
(2023)

"Poor Things" is a masterpiece full of drama and comedy excellently carried by Lanthimos.
Yorgos Lanthimos returns with another magnificent film, "Poor Things" is a masterpiece in every aspect. Lanthimos' direction is sensational and his mastery is evident at all times. The cinematography is elegant and manages to be intoxicating. The script based on the novel of the same name is sublime, managing to tell a story of life from the perspective of a woman who grows, finds herself and knows the beautiful and hard aspects of life. The editing is agile and manages to work well with the soundtrack to emphasize the emotions of each scene. The cast is great, mainly the protagonist, Emma Stone as Bella Baxter is at the highest level, a character full of nuances, with a unique body language and an interpretation of different feelings conveyed. Mark Ruffalo makes a great character that is funny, sour and undesirable. Willem Dafoe is incredible in his role, being tough and loving, playing these aspects perfectly. Ramy Youssef gives a wonderful performance, filled with tenderness and body language that demonstrates every emotion of her character. "Poor Things" is a masterpiece full of drama and comedy excellently carried by Lanthimos.

Shepherd
(2021)

"Sheperd" is a film with good technical aspects but it has a terrible script.
"Sheperd" is a film that starts promisingly thanks to its filming locations, it maintains a gloomy and solid atmosphere until the end, but its story is very simple and becomes long and boring, leaving a bad taste in the mouth at the end. The big problem here is the script, which as I already mentioned is simple and crudely developed, the director's work is good in terms of directing actors, the protagonist, being practically all the time on screen, achieves a wonderful performance, giving a character full of dramatics. The cinematography is extraordinary taking advantage of the beautiful filming locations and achieving a gloomy atmosphere. The digital special effects, for their part, are thankfully few but look terribly done. "Sheperd" is a film with good technical aspects but it has a terrible script.

Konkeuriteu yutopia
(2023)

"Konkeuriteu yutopia" is a great film about human behavior during a catastrophe.
"Konkeuriteu yutopia" is a dramatic film with a disaster theme, involving suspense and comedy in its script in an ingenious way. The story is psychological and sociological, starring characters who will do whatever it takes to survive a catastrophe, even if they become wild and cold-blooded beasts. This story is known, it has been lived, is being lived and will continue to be lived, the film shows it from raw perspectives and in other fun ones, emphasizing the work of the director who manages to tell a timeless story. The entire cast gives memorable performances, the cold cinematography is wonderful and elegant, it also makes perfect use of the filming locations, the editing work plays an important role in bringing an interesting rhythm to the film. "Konkeuriteu yutopia" is a great film about human behavior during a catastrophe.

El Roomie
(2024)

"El Roomie" is a regular movie that is watchable.
"El Roomie" is a romantic comedy with an interesting script but it is somewhat incipient, the comedy never seems to come to light completely on screen and the emotional message it plans to leave is left half-finished. The male lead is a limited actor without much talent, while Fiona Paloma plays an interesting character who plays at being a femme fatale due to her love for Film Noir and the actress represents it majestically. The cast also includes outstanding actors: Leticia Calderón and Carlos Ferro who provide fun performances. The cinematography is good and the editing work also manages to be of quality. "El Roomie" is a regular movie that is watchable.

Don't Look at the Demon
(2022)

A bad production with the occasional successful scene but which fails miserably as a film.
"Don't Look at the Demon" is a Malaysian film with an international cast, including Fiona Dourif, Jordan Belfi and Harris Dickinson, however they are wasted due to the film's director and how poorly their characters are written. The script is not original but the plot sounded striking and the trailer had merit, but the end result is a film that continually goes up and down until reaching an illogical and ridiculous ending. A couple of scenes are salvageable but nothing special. The cinematography is bad, the atmosphere is non-existent and the filming locations are not used by the production team. A bad production with the occasional successful scene but which fails miserably as a film.

Anyone But You
(2023)

A romantic comedy with an old school style.
"Anyone But You" is a romantic comedy that returns to the old school style of the late '90s and early '2000s with a somewhat irreverent story, of course without wanting to harm weak sensibilities. In recent years, quite bland romantic comedies have appeared, but since mid-2023, films have returned with stronger elements in terms of touching on certain themes. The cinematographic work is well done, achieving some majestic shots in some scenes. The cast is very good, making their characters charismatic, it is worth highlighting mainly the performances of the protagonists: Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell who achieve great chemistry. A romantic comedy with an old school style.

The Beekeeper
(2024)

A good movie for the beginning of 2024.
"The Beekeeper" is one of the best action films of recent years, its script that includes living in a bee hive is included in the lives of the human characters, from heroes to villains and results in a well-made story. The cast is good in their performances, although Jason Statham seems to always play the same character, while Josh Hutcherson plays the villain masterfully. The action scenes are exciting and violent, the humor used is very good and sometimes exceeds the ridiculous but manages to achieve its goal. The cinematography is very good, the costume design is outstanding and the digital special effects are a little unrealistic in some scenes. The greatest success of the film is its script, although it is worth mentioning that at times it is implausible but every action film is. A good movie for the beginning of 2024.

Mean Girls
(2024)

A different movie with the same feeling as the teen classic from the '00s.
To celebrate 20 years of the teen classic "Mean Girls", this musical adaptation of the same name comes and the result is very good. At first you can't help but make comparisons with the original film, but once you adjust to the fact that times change, the film is a delight. The script does not go out of style, the message is still present and the question of whether it has really achieved a change in the high school world is still without a concrete answer. Most of the musical numbers are excellent in lyrics and the choreography accompanied by good camera movements gives magnificent results. The performances of the new cast are totally acceptable, and it should be noted that Tina Fey shines again in her character, for their part, the actresses who play the new plastic girls give remarkable performances, Angourie Rice plays very well with the personalities of her character, Reneé Rapp plays a superb Regina George with a femme fatale style, Bebe Wood demonstrates her acting talent as a material teenager with fragile feelings and Avantika is fun and realistic as a giddy girl, it should be noted that all of them have good voices and they demonstrate it in the musical themes, but the one who gives the best performance of the entire cast is Auli'i Cravalho who demonstrates an intensity acting of emotions and a magnificent voice in each song she performs. A different movie with the same feeling as the teen classic from the '00s.

Night Swim
(2024)

A film with terrible special effects but an entertaining and well-directed story.
"Night Swim" is the first horror film released in 2024 and results in an interesting story. The bad reviews have not been long in coming and are unfair, since the script is entertaining and is novel in terms of setting the story in a haunted pool. The performances are outstanding, the cinematography is the best part since it achieves underwater shots of a high visual level. A big failure of the film is the designs of the ghosts that are unrealistic and even laughable, adding that they are made with poor quality digital effects. A film with terrible special effects but an entertaining and well-directed story.

Napoleon
(2023)

"Napoleon" is not the best film of the year, nor the best directed by Ridley Scott, but it manages to have good moments without being a masterpiece.
"Napoleon" is the new film by the legendary Ridley Scott, but it is bittersweet. The script focused on the historical character of Napoleon Bonaparte is somewhat rushed in terms of history and fails to save itself from feeling repetitive and sometimes slow. The performances are good, highlighting Vanessa Kirby as Joséphine Bonaparte. The greatest success of the film is its excellent cinematography, highlighting that frozen lake scene and the underwater scenes that accompany it. Other technical aspects such as editing and sound design are of quality but not enough to stay in the viewer's mind. The costume design is tremendous and one of the film's strong points. The digital special effects, although few, are unreal. "Napoleon" is not the best film of the year, nor the best directed by Ridley Scott, but it manages to have good moments without being a masterpiece.
