Shattered City: The Halifax Explosion
(2003)

could have been better (contains spoilers)
This story was good, but it could have been done better, in an actual mini-series instead of a 4 hour movie. The characters were one dimensional, I really didn't feel like I knew them well enough to feel for them.I felt like each story of each character's life was half told. We're left to draw our own conclusions at the end of the movie. Less than 3 weeks after the blast we see the Collins family setting up Christmas tree, on Christmas Day. They are smiling and happy. It's like the disaster had never happened, and their father was still alive. I found this so hard to believe. Life does have to gone on, but after experiencing something that cataclysmic, would your heart been into Christmas? Did the trial really happen that rapidly? Was everything all well so soon after the explosion? It would have been best to show the Collins family a year later. I would have liked to see what we knew would happen anyway, Charlie falling in love with Dr. Paxton, Court all better, Trixie with her baby. The ending sort of spoiled the entire movie. The filming of the explosion itself could not have been done any better. It was very detailed, and very realistic. My grandma who lived through WWII had trouble watching the scene, because it was such a realistic explosion, right down to the books being blown to bits.

Ghost Ship
(2002)

Scary? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I normally gauge a horror movie's scariness by how much of it sits with me when I try to sleep at night. I slept well! The movie was creepy when you watched it. When the ghost of Katie popped up unexpectedly, I have to admit it startled me. I may have screamed once. But there were many questions that were left unanswered. The evil in the ship, collecting souls, for who? The devil? The mark, is that the mark that was left in the singer's hand? What about the crew who were "in on it" (taking the gold) Were they evil spirits as well, or were they talked into by the leader? As far as the "religious" aspect goes, I really don't see it. Isn't it just the age old message, good go to heaven, bad go to hell?

Trudeau
(2002)

Canadian?
Why would they have an American play the role of someone who was Canadian through and through? Just curious considering mostly all of the rest of the cast is Canadian?? I am just surprised because it's a Canadian mini-series, about a Candian Prime Minister, filmed in Canada etc......... Colm Feore did an excellent job though.

Little House on the Prairie
(1974)

Was one of my favourites
When I was five years old my grandmother bought me the Little House book set, and for nearly a year my dad read me a chapter or two a night, until all the books had been read. I still love these books and every fall I re-discover them.

Although I loved the show I can't remember too many similarites between the books and the TV, other than some of the characters. In the books there were no Garveys, no Albert, no James and Cassandra BUT I understand that these characters were added to the show for an interesting cast. I liked the fact that they made Mrs. Oleson like her horrible daughter Nellie, but if you had read the books you would remember that Mrs. Oleson wasn't too bad, although I think she should've knocked some sense into Nellie. :-) Other characters that are left out of the show are Mary Power and Cap Garland (who was one of my favourites from the books). It would've been cool to see Nellie try to worm her way into Almanzo's heart like she did in the books. I don't remember a plot line like that. I do remember some woman that liked Almanzo in the TV show, and Laura humiliated her somehow, I think she didn't sew a dress properly and if fell of the woman? I can't remember clearly. I read in a biography that Willie went blind from a firecracker - that would've made a good story! I still loved the show though. My favourite episodes are when Laura steals the jewel box from Nellie, and she had the nightmares about jail, and when Nellie pretends to be crippled and Laura pushes her down a hill in her wheelchair. I remember the one where Carrie fell in the mine, that one made me cry.

Pocahontas
(1995)

An insult to the true story of Pocahontas
Although children would not care about the historical accuracy of this film I was bothered by Captain Smith and Pocahontas' relationship. For one, when Captain Smith arrived in Jamestown in 1607 Pocahontas would have been 12. It was tribal ritual to "capture" someone and "rescue" them. Captain Smith had a very special relationship with Pocahontas, but it was more of a father-daughter relationship. In all my studies that I have done on her, I have NEVER read that she was raped by Captain Smith. Also, the Little Mermaid is fiction, not a fairly tale.

The real story of Pocahontas is just as romantic as the Disney one. She was a strong young woman. For God sake she was taken and held captive. She learned to adapt to her changes and she did eventually meet and fall in love with John Rolphe. She was also married, not betrothed in real life to a man from her tribe. This was arranged by Powhatan.

The animation was beautiful and the songs were nice. I just wish that someone, someday would tell HER story. I give this 3 out of 5 stars.

Inventing the Abbotts
(1997)

Not at all boring or slow
I did not find this story boring or slow. For me, it was a great example of the grass is always greener. To the world, the Abbots were the perfect family. The had three beautiful daughters, all the money anyone could ever want. And they're just as screwed up and dysfunctional as the rest of us.

Crossroads
(2002)

Complete Trash
This movie was complete trash. I can't believe that parents actually let their kids watch this movie! Spears is supposed to be a role model. I don't think dressing sleazy and dancing around a stripper's pole is something that I want to see my 8 year old daughter doing in ten years. I can't comment too much on what I hated about it, without revealing to many spoilers. I didn't like Spears quest to become a "woman". There's teenage pregnancy. And of course we have 3 teenagers completely defying their parent wishes and "running away" from home. The acting was horrible and over dramatic. The plot line of the pregnant girl is tragic. It's not meant for children to see, let alone understand. Most of Spears fans are young girls, not adults. It's hard to believe that she didn't that little girls would want to go see her film. Please, do not waste your time seeing this film. 90 minutes of the weather channel would be more entertaining.

Gangs of New York
(2002)

I was disappointed
I was disappointed with this film. Although I understood it would be violent, I wasn't prepared for the amount of gore. I was not impressed with Diaz's accent, which resembled Kevin Costner's accent in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Is she Irish, or is she American? Daniel Day Lewis has received a well deserved Oscar nod, as the sympathetic villain, Bill the Butcher. He is someone you definitely love to hate. As for DiCaprio, I was again unimpressed with his acting. I don't know if he'll ever be as good as he was as Arnie Grape, in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I give this film 2 1/2 stars out of 4.

Trading Spaces
(2000)

What an awesome show!
I love this show! There is one comment that I didn't agree with. Having the designers stay and do the homework. The whole premise for the show is that the HOMEOWNERS do the work. Yes, the designers do help, but they are there for their artistic (or sometimes lack-there-of)abilities. It would cost well over $1000 if the homeowners were paying for the the time and work the designers put into the rooms. Most of the designers have their own companies, so getting a complete re-vamp of a room, for $1000 is a steal, when you think of what some designers charge per hour!

Back to the Beach
(1987)

Once upon a time I thought it was good!
When you were a kid, did you have a movie that you watched over, and over, and over again? I did. It was Back to the Beach. I thought that Pee Wee Herman's cameo was hilarious! Ditto for Frankie and Annette's surly son Bobby. This is when I was 10! I recently watched it as an adult and found that Frankie and Annette's continual fighting was childish, and NOT funny. I found Bobby really annoying. It's a great movie if you're looking for a show the whole family can watch together, but personally, I wouldn't watch it alone unless I was ready for a nap.
