Geon-chook-hak-gae-ron
(2012)

A harsh love story
I feel like this film should have closer to an eight over all score. This film portrays the first love we have all enjoyed. This film also shows how one mistake can have such a large consequence. That in the end we all move on with our lives, while some continue to be with their first love. For most people the first love is just that.

Experiencing your first love can be the most memorable moment of your life. Even a short period of time the innocence and first experiences you share with your first loved one are incomparable with the rest of the relationships in your life.

This film perfectly portrays how perfect and bittersweet that first love can be. How when looked on later in life the one mistake that caused that relationship to end is such a small thing. By the time we realize this fact, it is too late and we have already moved on with our lives.

The sad part of growing up is the realization that the relationships experienced in youth are so much different compared to when we have grown up.

Almost cried during this film. I feel everyone can relate to this film and should see it. This is another great romance film from south Korea. They and japan really make the best romance films!

Better than I thought it would be
To those of you who have not seen the anime I'm going to give you a brief description of the story.

A young boy from tokyo moves to a village out in the middle of nowhere. It just so happens that the class he is entering at his new school is cursed.

The curse is such that the students in the class have to follow certain rules or else people in the class and their families have a chanced of being killed.

I would go into more detail but to do so would ruin some surprises this story contains.

For those of you who have seen the anime, you will be happy to know that the movie script stays almost the same as the animation. The major scenes from the anime are duplicated in the film pretty well.

Now i have seen a lot of live action anime films, and despite this one being obviously lower budget, it is still really good!

The actors and actresses even though they look a lot older than middle school kids did a great job acting. I was overall satisfied with the film and would recommend it to others. Some parts are corny but i thought the same for the anime.

Black and White film Degraded Film Experience
This is another typical Japanese high school gangster flick. Filled with a lot of "TEME!!" and other Japanese cuss words.

The thing that ruined this film for me was poor filming.

This film was shot in black and white which ruined the film experience more than it bettered it. The film is supposed to take place in the 70's. Which is my guess is to why they thought shooting the film in black and white was a good idea!

BUT NO! it was a terrible idea. The majority of the fight scenes take place in not well lit areas so you can literally not see anything. It makes it impossible to decipher who is getting hit, who is hitting who. This leaves you in a state of confusion, given that the film is about 50% fighting.

This is what made the film bad for me. They should have shot it in full color. The actors were all good. The main gangster kid was well casted and he actually looked like a gangster for once! The main girl too was very attractive. The story line while not very significant was there.

The whole films point was that not everyone can choose what role they play in life. That some people are given roles judged by their looks and where they are born or from. The film gets that point across pretty well.

If they would have shot it in color i would have given it a better score. Since they didn't i wouldn't recommend anyone else to even watch this.

Don't waste your time
This is on someones list of top 100 Japanese films and i mistakenly wasted my time watching this.

There are a lot of problems with this film plot characters cinematography it all is pretty much terrible.

Getting into it though the story is about a group of adults in their early twenties who want to be rappers. The only problem is they all are terrible and more or less ugly losers. The story line is just a bore they never do anything in this film they have one "concert" and that isn't even performed on a stage.

The biggest problem are the actors and actresses in this film. THEY ALL SUCK. they are all terrible actors. This film looks like it was made by a college drama club and it's members and their parents were used for the acting roles. The best performer in this film was by a porn star! Thats how bad they all were.

Another huge thing though is just how obviously low budget this film was. They probably spent a thousand dollars making this film. They filmed at 5 different locations and none of those were ascetically pleasing. Everything just seemed very unprofessional. I seriously feel like i could go out now and make a better film then this.

Yeah i felt like i had to write this so everyone knows to stay away. Really if you watch this your just going to be wasting your time.

A lot better than the rating on IMDb
There was only one other review for this film. I thought that i should add my two cents as well. This is also coming from a males perspective.

Just from reading the synopsis you will probably think this movie is pretty boring. After seeing the score you will most likely say, "well lets skip this". to that i say WAIT!!

Even though the film take place on a 80km walk, the film is not just dialogue on the walk. They place many flashbacks that flesh out the story during the walk.

The main plot line of the two half siblings is really original, and i have not seen a film before that took this sort of position on half siblings. You will see the progression of the main characters throughout the film

I don't want to say much more about the plot but just know that the ending will surely make you smile! The film does a great job of capturing the image we all have of our time spent as kids and growing up.

I gave this an eight because it does drag towards the middle. Some of the actors performances were also sub par. Which is understandable given the relative age of the actors.

I say give this film a chance!

Watch the original Korean Version
Luckily I saw the korean film first. I saw this on IMDb when i was giving the original film a ten out of ten.

GO WATCH THE ORIGINAL FILM!!!!!!!!

This film should burn in hell. This director probably found the original films script translated it to English. Then said hey let's make a romance film! I want the director of this film shot through the head for doing this.

GO WATCH THE ORIGINAL FILM!!!!!!

Don't even waste your time with this film. Like just about every other reviewer said watch the original before you watch this. This just shows you how far the American Romance genre has fallen. It is sad that the director did this.

GO WATCH THE ORIGINAL FILM!!!!!!!!

In case you didn't see my subliminal messages in this review

A great film
This is one of those movies where you get lost in the story. I have seen many many Japanese films. From love stories to dramas, to action flicks. I have seen just more films than most people have, yet this film will always have a place in my heart.

I was six years old when this film was released yet when i watched it tonight in 2013 i couldn't help but be astounded by it.

The characters in this film are all portrayed beautifully all the actors did a wonderful job to make this film believable. I have done my research and seen that that the film portrays a partial truth to how compensated dating was done at this time in japan.

A common theme in Japanese films is to show you a wonderful story of youth, and to say that life goes on once the story is told

I don't want to sound old, but now that i'm 21 I have a full time job and my youth seems like a far away place in memory. This is one of those films that makes you remember the time when you were young and lived just for the moment.

The film spans only 24 hours or so of the characters in real time. Showing them work till the break of dawn is heart breaking for me.

I wish more films were released like this.

Back to my main point though; out of all the Japanese films i have seen, this is one i can truly suggest to anyone.

This film show's the struggle women had to go through in the 90's in Japanese culture. The process of women being more than just objects took place during this time. This makes the film magical. In America it has always been so where women have been treated as equals. But in japan it is different.

This film portrays the struggle of women in this time.

Coming from a man, this is a must watch.

A great modern day romance
Even though this review is on part one of the film the full story is two parts. Even though it is lengthy; you really have to watch both parts of the film. Part 1 of the film contains the romance first starting in high school. The main couple fights through many key points in the story during the high school session as a couple. In part two of the film it highlights them as individuals. I don't want to give away too much of the story so i'll stick to that. This is a great film and at the top of my list in romance films, this is the best one made in awhile. If you can sit through four hours of film, it is worth it. The main couple act very well together, and none of the scenes seem forced. Some parts to seem a little over emotional. This is however coming from an American, so i don't know how it suits other people.
