Wonder Wheel
(2017)

Snapshot in Time
This movie is really a glimpse of a snapshot in time in the life of a woman facing several challenges due to choices she made prior to when we are brought into her story. It is not a neatly told story beginning with "Once Upon a Time" and ending with "And They Lived Happily Ever After". If you are looking for a romantic movie, this isn't. It's a drama. The scenes feel much more like they were meant for Broadway, including some campy acting and dialog as if it was made in the 40s along with moments of "stage" lighting. It's different, but I found it entertaining.

Crap Juvenile Creation
This is crap. The music is abysmal. The acting is horrendous. The dialog is lacking. It feels like a middle schooler wrote the play and music. So disappointed.

The Identity Theft of Mitch Mustain
(2013)

Big Waste of Time
A long story about nothing. I had no idea who Mitch was but I decided to watch anyway because it was on Amazon. This documentary starts out mediocre and just dives into nothing. The music is bad. The long, slow dialog is bad. There aren't even very many highlights that compel a non-biased viewer to believe he could throw a perfect spiral. I wish him the best, but I wish I could get the wasted time watching this back. The only thing stolen was time.

Hillbilly
(2018)

Culture not Color
I gave this 4 stars because it is a great example of how the vast majority of conflicts are due to fear of other cultures, not skin color. Yes, there are idiots that fear different skin color, and then those that fear of others that look different, but this is about numerous aspects of humanity that are different. But as others have noted, the main point to this movie is about those living in rural areas being close minded and uneducated. When a hillbilly realizes his own "people" voted for Trump, all of a sudden, he's "done" with rural people, which is EXACTLY how I felt the writers tried to portray how Appalachians were unfairly judged from the start of the documentary. What the left do not "get" is that a lot of votes for Trump were actually votes against Clinton. Those on the right actually used their intellect to deduct which candidate was the least dangerous. The violence and riots that took place since are considered by many on the right as proof of the lawlessness feared would be ushered in by Clinton. It's happening anyway. One of the greatest economic rebounds ever occurred while Trump was in office. Covid-19 is bringing it down. And yes, Hillbilly Elegy is FAR superior to this left-wing spin. JD Vance did a great job telling a story from his experience as close to the middle as one can. This documentary is just a product of sour grapes.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
(2019)

Not What I Was Expecting
I'm rating the movie a 9 because it is a great movie about a writer, not so much about Fred Rogers.

I almost bought the movie prior to watching it. But as I watched the transition from the opening to some "guy" I was very dissappointed as I realized my expectations about delving into Mr. Rogers life were not going to be met.

I'm still dissappointed. I did watch the excellent documentary hosted by Michael Keaton prior to watching this aectdotal story.

But on its face, this was a very well done production.

If you are expecting a biography, maybe John Mulaney will be cast in that movie. He has the face and voice for it.

John Adams

Educational and Entertaining
Very educational, inspiring, and entertaining. The angled camera work was very distracting. It took me out of the story too often. It's unnatural as we typically don't walk around with our heads cocked at a 45 degree angle all the time. The acting, costumes, scenery, etc. were superb.

V for Vendetta
(2005)

A Benny Hill - Jack Nicholson as The Joker Knock Off
This is campy. I would rate it higher except the movie lines were cut out from numerous other scripts like a ransom note full of cliches. I expected V to ask, "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight"? I blame it on 2005. I'd like to see a darker remake, though.

The Mountain Between Us
(2017)

The Acting is Very Weak and Unconvincing
The acting is startlingly weak and unconvincing. Bridges final scene is almost laughable it's so bad. There is no excuse. The acting in the Revenant puts this movie to shame.

Big Waste of Time
The ONLY reason we decided to watch a black and white movie with subtitles was due to the awards received. The ONLY reason we watched until the end was due to the awards, thinking that certainly it will improve. It's SO slow moving that anything that seems like it might turn dramatic, like a tire rolling over dog pooh, had us anticipating some kind of major drama. But it was just a shot of a tire rolling over dog pooh. That's basically how the whole movie goes. Mexico is so beautiful and colorful, not filming in color was a huge mistake.

The dark video and very poor audio meant we were basically just reading a story while trying to decipher which character was talking.

If this movie is worthy of any award, the movie industry is in very sad shape.

Mr. Church
(2016)

The Movie Watching World Could Use More Movies Like Mr. Church - It is Gold
If you are tempted to bypass this movie because Eddie Murphy is the "headliner" or because "Church" is in the title, dig deeper and you will find gold.

After watching this movie with my wife, I was tempted to say, "Why don't they make movies like that anymore", as if it was a movie from days gone by. I feel strongly the casting was great, the acting was great, the story is moving and inspiring. Even the "featurettes" on the DVD we rented were a great addition. They are short and to the point. They gave us just the amount of additional information we were looking for that we would have missed out on had we gone to the theater or streamed online. But regardless, that was just icing on a very classy and lovingly created cake.

A Short Movie of a Great Long Book is a Daunting Challenge
Some of the following could be considered a spoiler. After reading the book and being impacted greatly by the story of Louis Zamporini, I have NO idea what it would be like to watch this movie without knowing anything about Zamporini. I'd love to read a review from that perspective. I believe this story deserves to be a mini-series at some point. I wouldn't start with the flight as the book does. I would start with Zamporini as a troubled youth. I agree with others that a narrator would have helped a great deal. In fact, I would base the series on Hillenbrand working with Zamporini to put the book together. I believe the time and effort to get the story into book form is as much a story as Zamporini himself. The book has 50 pages of bibliography references. It's a historical masterpiece. I guess I was expecting and hoping the movie would suck me in like Castaway did many years ago. However, with all that in mind, the movie deserves a high rating in my opinion. I saw key components of the long, detailed book in less than 140 minutes on screen. If you loved the book and didn't like the movie, fine. If you saw the movie and wonder what the big deal is, then take the time to read the book. It's a story that should have been mandatory reading in history classes in America. I can't help but think it was purposely left out of the classroom for political reasons. This book is truth and the Truth will set you free.
