The Crazy Ones
(2013)

Madman
Robin is his usual frenetic self. If you are looking for the polar opposite of Don Draper your search ends here.

A fading star but still enough light to be watchable and as Kelly Clarkson discovers in the outtakes he can still be funny. Couldn't help but but smile at the Mcdonalds pitch a la Madmen.

Sarah finally looks good. Older but assured. The rest are not noteworthy.

The main problem will be the crazy one behind the camera. Namely E. Kelley. If they can't contain his crazy they will needlessly lose viewers.

Need to keep this light hearted. Weak show and cast. Unlikely to support anything too serious or too outlandish. Enjoyable fluff.

Did enough to warrant a second look.

Wish Them well.

Thank you.

The Secret of My Succe$s
(1987)

Memorles.
Saw this recently and was overwhelmed by them.

Movies, music etc are made for general consumption and yet manage to have incredibly personal meaning. Become an inseparable part of you without you even realizing it.

First saw this as a kid. Good music. Story that any kid would want to believe.

Liked Michael and he was good as ever but he barely registered.

Slender, elegant blonde walked onto the screen.

Heart stopped.

Started again.

And the world had changed.

Helen Slater was in it.

Knew she would never set eyes on me and could not love her less. Could not forget her either.

She is now a pale shadow of her young self. As am I.

They say there is no such thing as ghosts but movies have magic. As light and shadow danced on screen, just for a moment a beautiful girl and a boy who loved her flickered to life once again.

That time is long lost, as are those people. But not that love.

Just wanted some record of it other than my memory.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Banshee
(2013)

Screaming
Start at least.

Spectacular action and some brutal violence. It's skinemax so expect to be hit with an over-sized rack about two minutes in. Mostly downhill from there.

The story is intriguing enough. Released convict, old debts, old flame etc. A bit of mystery about who did what, when and why. Pretty tame stuff that shouldn't tax your deductive skills or your attention.

Cast is distinctly underwhelming. Antony looks and moves the part. Unfortunately does not sound or feel the part.

Of all the women they could have picked as sexy burglar they went with Ivana. Looks suitably exotic but little else. Not exactly a stirring sight naked either.

Hoon Lee as Job was easily the most eye catching. Played the gender bender bit really well. Unlike rest of the cast, managed to be tough and ruthless even with the hair and outfits.

The villain does the usual iron fist, velvet glove bit. The sexy deputy and others are passable.

Looks ambitious and probably will get better but is cruiserweight like bartender. Has production values to pack a punch but simply does not have the cast or characters to be a heavyweight.

No need to make excuses for Cinemax even though it's just their third series. They did enough to grab and keep attention. More than can be said for many network shows.

Will be watching.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

3 episodes in this one is a dud. Bad acting and senseless story. Even hottest amish girl EVER cannot save this.

Line of Duty
(2012)

Entertaining.
But flawed.

Obvious shortcomings but you can ignore them and just watch an interesting story unfold.

Competent performances from all involved. Kid is so obnoxious you will be ready to tune him up yourself. Hats off to the little guy.

Cliffhangers, plot points etc can seem contrived but still draw you in and keep you around till the end.

The end has been a problem in these things recently but they squeaked by here. Serviceable if not spectacular.

Junkie jump is the highlight. Should feel that tingling in the pit of your stomach as you follow him down.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

The Newsroom
(2012)

Newsworthy.
For the wrong reason. Show is far less noteworthy than the names behind it.

Missed Jeff without even realizing it. Took about 20 seconds of his opening rant to remember how good it is to see him.

The rest of the cast is uneven. Mortimer does not have the pull of McAdams http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1126618/.

Waterston is good as ever. The rest were unmemorable.

The writing was sporadically good. Lots of sharp retorts and pointed observations. Lot of the obscenity just felt forced. Will have to show more sophistication if it wants to retain interest. Same old potshots at same old 'stupid and indifferent' viewers is just boring and has been done to death. See very little 'intelligence' or 'genius' in hitting obvious and soft targets.

Needless camera movement. Meant to convey intensity on screen instead leaves you incensed on couch. Do these dimwits really equate motion sickness with high drama ?

Idly curious to see how this plays out. Characters are interesting but cast is spotty. Romance is decidedly hackneyed. As is the writing in large part. Opening grabs attention and the rest steadily loses it.

Doubt this will be the grand success people claim it is.

'Dumb' viewer will shoulder the blame.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Prime Cut
(1972)

Great.
On paper. Falls short in reality. Well short.

Hackman, Marvin and co are mobsters involved in a spat over money.

Let the shooting, beating and butchering begin. Throw in human trafficking for good measure.

All this set in rural America and Marvin's car.

Acting, directing and action are passable. Chase in the fields and homicidal harvester are memorable. Should be a good movie but it never really is. Just off somehow.

These guys have done better work so they can be forgiven. Spacek will help you make it a full pardon .

Any and every criticism just died at the first sight of her. Beautiful doesn't even begin to cover it. The woman is walking around naked but you would have to first get your eyes off that face to notice. Hypnotic. Makes an otherwise miss, a must see. Will watch this again for her alone.

Still radiant in her sixties. Sadly they don't make them like her any more.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Longmire
(2012)

Long story short.
It's good.

Big guns, bad guys, sheep but no horses.

Taylor has the weight, voice et al to command attention. Yep, he also has the hat.

Good to see Katee's mocking, wicked smile again. Not good looking. Face too broad, mouth too wide. But those coolly challenging eyes are more arousing than any pretty face would have been. Strong women have an appeal all their own.

Like Lou but he felt out of place here. Bailey Chase played the rival well. Devious but not obvious. Wouldn't mind seeing more of Cassidy.

Story is old hat but told well enough. Dialogue is straight forward. No real humour but not overly morose either.

Action is competent. Pace is comfortable.

Views are easy on the eye. Sound is easy on the ear.

Will be watching.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Poor second episode. Katee strip, daughter with deputy etc. Expected writing to be subtler than this. Good to see softly curved Katee. Grown women with toothpick arms are just creepy.

Later episodes got better. Lou and Martinez are looking good. Chase is looking even better in light of the father and the affair. The 'rez' is proving far more interesting than the county. Stuck with it and don't regret it.

Continuum
(2012)

Wasted.
Time and opportunity.

Decent start. Lousy finish.

TV people need a strong reminder that they are not in the movie business. Everything does not need to be neatly wrapped up by the end of the first episode. Show some sophistication. Making a pitch to networks and advertisers is one thing, keeping a viewer interested for entire seasons is another

The start is interesting because of the ambiguity. Possibly evil corporation against possibly good rebels.

But buildng explosion tilts the balance and by the cop killing the die is cast.

So all you are left with is the usual boring heroic cop and despicable villains. Quite a feat, making something futuristic look so old and hackneyed.

Time travel and future tech is nowhere near interesting enough to save this.

Less black and white characters all struggling with an unknown time and place, now that might have created some genuine suspense and interest.

Instead you get another doa cop show with some outlandish premise. Worked so well for Alcatraz, right ? Nope.

Rachel looks strikingly good. In recent times she has just looked fat but not here. Sculpted not starved. Unfortunately acting ability is as limited as before.

Good to see smoking man again.

Rest of the cast is forgettable.

Doubt this will continue for long.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Dirk Gently
(2010)

Funny.
Still laughing at dogging behind bush.

Nailed the cast. Gently, Macduff and Gilks work well. Janice and co are competent.

Holistic detective Gently relies on the universe to unravel mysteries based on the 'interconnectedness of all things'. He is not above giving the universe a hand though and will stalk complete strangers but won't pay his bills.

Macduff is cynical, contemptuous, carping, cautious and yet surprisingly committed assistant/partner.

Together they make for a bromance far more engaging than any manufactured romance would have been. Oddly reminiscent of Caine and Kingsley - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096454/ . That was a Sherlock spoof. This one isn't but comparisons with new sherlock may spring to mind.

Writing is good. Banter is brisk. Cases are crazy. As is the secretary. Not to mention the domestic help.

Lovelorn AI to cleaner/assassin from Poland. Nonsense that still keeps your eyes glued to the screen.

Absurd but addictive.

Time well spent.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Bad Lieutenant
(1992)

No Cop Out.
Unrelenting ugliness.

Line in the movie 'Vampires are lucky, they can feed on on others. We've gotta eat away at ourselves.'

That's all this movie is about. Keitel's singleminded self-destruction. Drugs, violence, women, alcohol, gambling etc. You name it, he's doing it and doing it badly.

Supporting cast, story etc are all just props. Setting the stage for a harrowing portrayal by Keitel.

This movie is not entertainment. Not something to identify with or enjoy. Not something to understand. Consider yourself lucky if such madness has never touched your life

Only thing left to do is be a spectator.

Repulsive. Yet, even in the face of an overpowering urge to distance yourself, might still find yourself strangely moved.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Missing
(2012)

In Acton.
Gunmen who can't hit the ground if they tried are TV and film staples.

However assassins who politely wait their turn while you throw your punches and elbows ? Gunmen who stand with their guns by their sides and start shooting once you run and duck ?

Are they really trying to pass this off as life and death struggle ? In 2012 ?

Realise she is no Neeson or Bourne but Ashley or her editors or both are going to have to step it up. Disney movie like Tangled had better action sequences.

Usually struck by good music and the bad doesn't really register but the music in this was terrible. Singing was jarring enough to grate on nerves.

Taken was one heck of a ride. If you have seen it then this story might seem 'oddly familiar' and boy, does this version pale in comparison. They have thrown in a few extra twists but still hard pressed to see how they are going to drag this out into a series worth watching.

Jennifer Garner set the standard. Like Ashley a lot but she isn't even close. Decidedly long in the tooth too. Mediocre support cast.

Distinctly underwhelmed.

Expect this to go 'missing' pretty soon.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Cancelled.

Justified
(2010)

Sub-Zero.
That's how cool he is.

Olyphant plays a less psychotic, more easygoing but just as lethal version of his deadwood self.

Goggins is a worthy adversary. A surprisingly complex character that you can't help liking.

Searcy, Barry and co provide outstanding support. Together they power the story along.

The story is addictive. Twists and new characters just keep coming. No elaborate contrivances. Simple but effective narrative.

The villains are top-notch and endlessly entertaining. Martindale was brilliant. Dewey and co are often hilarious.

Good music. 'You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive' will play in my head for a long time.

Language is surprisingly chaste. Easy paced with moments of frenzied violence. Episodes are over before you know it. Leave you jonesing.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Hell on Wheels
(2011)

Steam power.
In a jet age.

Certainly took its time to get going but turned into an enjoyable ride.

Deadwood comparison was inevitable but pointless. It is not coming back so it's take what you can get in the way of replacement.

Meaney is a powerhouse. Mount is adequate. McElligott is hot and tough. Heyerdahl, noonan and co provide very good support.

Common somehow manages to look more like rapper than freed slave but he is good enough.

No bar fights or shootouts at high noon.

No real heroes either.

Follows the recent trend of gritty, ugly westerns. An unvarnished look at early attempts at empire building. Generic sub plot of revenge, redemption etc.

More rts than fps.

Might be well worth your while if you can make it past the uninspiring beginning.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Pace picked up towards the end. Cast settled well. Hoped that Meaney would schemingly get his hands on the girl, setting up a whole slew of feuds.

But no. Romance, rivalry etc are all firmly on rails.

Unimaginative but not uninteresting.

Definitely looking forward to next season.

Touch
(2012)

And Go.
Good to see Keifer again but not Kring.

His touch was all too apparent in this globe hopping fantasy.

Can enjoy fluff without feeling the need to endow it with grandiose virtues and qualities.

So no talk of great mystery and mysticism and other nonsense. Even a nodding acquaintance with autism will show you what a struggle it can be for all involved. No, it's not magical.

So autistic kid seeing the future is pure invention, not insightful or thought provoking. As unreal as people strapping a bomb to your chest and then letting you go free to install a new oven.

The pilot was intriguing but in a decidedly time-bound way. No blank cheque here. Has one or two more episodes to show where it is going.

Is Keifer going to turn into some sort of hero. Are there going to be random stories of ovens and singers/call centre employees. What part will the boy play.

The random stories were ridiculous and Keifer has done 24, so not holding out much hope for this one.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

According to Danny Glover/Kring kid and Kiefer are meant to relieve pain instead they caused it.

Agonising second episode. Clichéd Indian, kid who can't really scream, social worker who can't really act, painfully overearnest Kiefer and Danny Glover doing god knows what.

Thought it couldn't get more excruciating than dog showing up at stadium but underestimate bad TV at your peril.

Loanshark is reformed by phone call, Lyov the city navigating wonder dog shows up at bridge to reunite suicidal father and estranged daughter and two caricature Japanese chicks obliviously wander through it all filming themselves.

Atrocious.

Gone.

Awake
(2012)

Snoozefest.
Aims at mind-bending but only manages mind-numbing. Common failing with shows like this.

Two realities. Two lame cases. Two therapists. One wife. One son.

Which is real ? Who is alive ? Who is dead ?

Who cares ?

And for how long ?

Outcomes are limited.

1) One of the realities is false.

2) Both are false as he lies in a hospital bed.

3) 'Purgatory' (sorry couldn't resist).

Either way, how many episodes of weak cop/family drama can you stomach while they artificially delay the big 'reveal'. The wife, son and partners are all pedestrian. Same old conflicts and issues.

Case Histories wasn't too long ago so even isaacs as brooding/mopey detective isn't new.

Battle of the therapists was interesting, just not enough.

There simply isn't a series in this story.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Cancelled.

Bubba Ho-Tep
(2002)

Dumbstruck.
Can still type though.

Stunningly original.

Elvis and Kennedy fighting a mummy in a retirement home.

Horrendous train wreck.

Right ? Wrong.

Coscarelli's writing and Campbell's voice turn this into a lament for lost life, love and youth.

Campbell plays the dying King with heartrending sincerity and subtlety. Truly memorable character and performance.

Ossie is comic yet dignified JFK.

Music is a star in it's own right.

Language effortlessly spans the coarse and lyrical.

Mummy is less than impressive but he plays his part.

The rest of the cast provides able support but are purely backdrop.

The 'horror' is weak.

The movie however, stands as a marvel of inventiveness.

Unfortunately Campbell opted out of the sequel so looks all downhill from here.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Luck
(2011)

Horse Sense.
In the casting at least.

Actors you would have thought had long been put out to pasture.

But these are aging heavyweights. They have class that guys in Twilight can only dream of.

They come together to provide an intriguing look at the underbelly of horse racing.

The language is ugly but natural. Characters speaking instead of actors abusing on cue.

No inexplicably nude women.

No spoon feeding either. Characters don't take the time to explain insider terms. You will have to educate yourself if you care enough to follow the show.

No shock and awe opening which is then strung out into interminable episodes.

Start is discouraging. Story seems aimless. Show looks like a dead end. But as you sit bemused, it sneaks up on you. By the end of the pilot you will know if you are hooked or not.

Cgi was obvious but injury to horse was still ghastly.

Mainstream is pathetically shallow. So anything different is often blindly credited with depth it does not possess.

Was this the tip of the iceberg ? Will there actually be hidden depths ?

Only time will tell. Or this review, if it is updated.

Definitely watching.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Cancelled due to 3 horses dying during shooting.

The River
(2012)

Go with the flow.
It is a fun ride.

A divertissement that knows it's place and embraces it.

No delusions of grandeur. No absurdly convoluted plot whose ending will reduce you to ranting at writers. It's ghost and magic right off the bat.

There is nothing really new here. Only question was can they make it work ?

Yes.

Pace is surprisingly brisk.

Cast is competent rather than brilliant. Poor leslie. Screaming at unseen things is clearly outside her wheelhouse.

In her defence, the effects are nothing to shout about. The setting feels generic.

Yet they managed to occasionally create a sense of creepiness.

Makes for uneasy if not scary viewing.

The real horror in such productions is shaky cam. Thankfully limited by a rather clever device. The boat is home/base for a renowned TV personality and so is fitted with a bunch of mounted cameras . Also the hand-held cams footage is not shot by epileptics.

They went for simplicity. Simple story which should leave you with a simple desire to see how it all plays out.

Can't wait to see what happens next.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Still pacy but clearly losing steam and viewers.

Could listen to Greenwood all day but looks like this one will live fast and die young.

-------

Cancelled.

The Finder
(2012)

Not a Keeper.
Nevertheless mildly entertaining.

As flights of fancy go, this isn't just long distance it's sub-orbital.

The antics will leave you baffled, assuming you actually were brave enough to bring reasoning and logic to TV land.

The cast is passable. No real chemistry anywhere but watchable.

The stories are trying to be inventive and that is what manages to keep the interest. The short Cinderella bit was unexpected. Stuff like that gives the impression that this is different.

It is. Problem is it's nothing special.

Fluff like this can create diversion not devotion.

Gypsies con and steal. What next. Italians are mobsters ? African Americans are drug dealers ?

Political correctness can go overboard sometimes but there is no disputing this. It was a terrible ethnic slur. Not to mention an affront to any right-minded person.

An apology may be too much to hope for but they should have the decency to refrain from broadcasting such rubbish in the future.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Cancelled.

House of Lies
(2012)

Juvenile.
Bad language and nudity is not my idea of being an adult. It was for a while.

Then turned twelve.

Nowadays takes a lot more to get my attention let alone keep it.

The odd obscenity and bared breast does not automatically make a show more "mature".

This looked like a third rate californication ripoff. That show works occasionally. This one didn't. At all.

In the Wire even the foulest language sounded authentic. Here everything is jarringly fake.

Good cast could have been used to better effect. Instead you get stripper and closet lesbian and other nonsense.

Could not crack a smile let alone laugh at this "comedy".

Only joke here is the writing.

Realize they need to distinguish themselves from the bigger networks but can't they show a little class while doing it.

Could get better but wouldn't hold my breath.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Alcatraz
(2012)

Marking Time.
That's what watching it felt like.

Lame cop show dolled up with spatiotemporal hocus pocus.

Problem with hocus pocus is that Lost went and poisoned that well.

If you could delude yourself with talk of "purgatory" last time, then you should be okay. Otherwise you will cast a decidedly jaundiced eye on this one.

No, you won't like what you see.

Sam is suitably sombre.

'Hugo' is competent straight man.

Elfin cop is cute but her pants and shoes make her look like an urchin escaped from some Dickens adaptation.

Music tries desperately to convince that things are oh so mysterious and exciting.

Not.

Villains were laughable.

As was the plot.

Guess they are hoping you will swallow the "unexplained" as easily as the leads.

Elf blindly dives in headfirst because "my grandfather killed my partner".

This from the alleged hard-boiled cop.

FBI guy devoted decades to waiting for these guys to reappear but apparently never bothered to examine the files and effects in storage. He had to wait for these two to show up and solve the cases using that information.

Instead he built a spanking new replica of the prison.

Not to mention a command centre that looks remarkably fake coming as it did on the heels of shots of the real prison.

The 'missing' number in the hundreds and include guards and prisoners. Theoretically sews up a lot of episodes. However on current evidence such a life expectancy seems wildly optimistic.

Abrams needs a makeover. Should distance himself from stuff like this until he finds something that is genuinely compelling and coherent.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Cancelled.

Tangled
(2010)

Feel good.
Not just in a cornball sense.

Could have coined the term for this movie. Leaves you warm and fuzzy but also pleasantly surprised that an old favourite can still be so well adapted for a new audience.

The silliness feels distinctly contrived. A clumsy nod to Disney tradition.

The music often feels equally stilted.

In stark contrast to some surprisingly polished and intricate action sequences.

The romance provides heartwarming and heartwrenching moments.

The cast is superb. They bring the story to life and keep it moving at a fair clip towards a wonderfully satisfying conclusion.

Wish them well. Hope to see more like this.

Already watched it many times and will watch it many more.

Thank you.

Dolphin Tale
(2011)

Imperfect.
Uneven pacing. Comic relief that often falls flat. Yada, yada...

The movie is far from perfect, just like the dolphin. Yet just like the dolphin it still works. Really well. The cast and crew have put their hearts into it and it shows. The music, camera-work etc were all good.

But there is only one star and that is Winter.

Beautiful, intelligent and inspirational.

A heroine you can fall in love with.

Go see her.

Her magic will enrich your life, even if it be for just a moment.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

Enlightened
(2011)

Endarkened.
Not just a cheap display of intellect,

Was literally in the dark after watching the pilot.

Gave new meaning to the word ambiguous.

Didn't know what to think or what to feel.

Not above scathing dismissals but it was Laura Dern.

So stuck it out and don't regret it.

Going from acceptance and support to hostile skepticism is not easy.

When you are listening to someone who knows what they are talking about everything sounds right and makes sense. A few minutes or few days later, when you have to substitute their experience and their intelligence with your own, thats when everything gets a lot harder.

Seeing her go from zen master to foulmouthed screecher, when left to her own devices is funny but credible.

Strictly speaking these people aren't lying. They have used their thought processes to create wealth and happiness for themselves but that does not mean you will.

Equality is a fine ideal but to believe that all men have the same ability, same skill or even the same amount of luck is absurd. Just because these people have found a marketable ability to earn revenue does not mean you are going to magically become a millionaire.

So while willing herself to her dream job she wills herself straight into the basement.

For all the talk of freedom and liberation, none of this wisdom is free. You have to buy the book, CD/DVD and your seat at the seminar.

Seeing her struggle to pay the bill was a nice touch.

Had to put my impulse for instant gratification on hold.

You have to go at her pace as she tries to find a new path through her old life. More quietly enjoyable than laugh out loud, but still a fun ride.

The cast is good but frankly if it wasn't for Laura would have quit after the first half hour.

Wish them well.

Thank you.

A Lonely Place to Die
(2011)

Not Lonely At All.
Interest, expectation, hope... a lot of things died together watching this. Pretty crowded by the end.

Good start and then crashed on the first turn.

Cliffhanger that turned into a nosedive.

Straight into the trash heap.

The actors were good. The story and setting were good too. Initially.

Then just at the first stirring of interest, the shooting started.

And the shooting match ended right there.

Guys go back and forth between being crack shots and drunk monkeys. All in the space of a few seconds no less.

Was still hanging on by the fingernails to the hope that it would recover.

But no, they shifted the scene to some town. With some cut-rate version of the Brazilian carnival providing the backdrop for the ending.

Hope plunged to it's death, alongside interest and expectation, not to mention assorted heroes and villains.

Literally rained bodies from start to end.

Yes, we get it.

Got it after the first drop or ten.

Was inspired to jump myself but fortunately was already at ground level.

They could have done something with this but they clearly had no idea of what to do beyond establishing the concept.

Melissa battled manfully but was badly let down by the writing.

Wish them well. Maybe the next foray will be better thought out.

Thank you.
