The Beekeeper
(2024)

The Golden Globes and Oscars should have an "action/adventure" category
It's a shame that action movies don't have a category of their own. Statham never disappoints me. I think this is one of his best movies, but I generally like them all. I am a woman and I don't know any other woman who likes action movies like I do, unfortunately. The Beekeeper is a 2 hour romp into that genre of movie that makes me hope there are men like this in the world. Beekeeper flows well, the action is top notch and fun, maybe a little shocking at times. Well-written screenplay. Nice photography, too. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Sure, some may say Statham always plays the same type of character...why not, he's great at it. And his co-star, Raver-Lampman, wow. I like this gal and I don't remember seeing her in a movie before. I feel the same about Naderi. I'd sure like to see another great script in B2. I don't think the Beekeeper/Agent Parker justice storyline is done yet. Oh, and it was so good to see Rashad again, it's been too long. Jeremy Irons, too. Fun ride.

The Blind
(2023)

Knew there was more to Phil Robertson
Saw The Blind yesterday. I wondered how knowing the levels Phil had sunk down to would affect how people thought of him. Some of it is tough to watch...the anger, the lies, cheating. A side of the man I didn't know existed although not wholly surprised. It was well acted and produced for the most part and I would definitely recommend people going to see it. I would have liked a bit more character development. But it was most likely such a difficult life that it would have been a 3 hour movie. Knowing Phil Robertson and family, I imagine this is one of the most spot on biography films we're going to see for a long time.

Sound of Freedom
(2023)

It's about time!
So finally someone has the courage to release a movie whose subject matter is something that's been buried or overlooked way too much. Not everyone is too sensitive to watch the truths of this movie. I felt that kind of emotion that makes one stop and think and want to do something different. All around, the actors brought to life their characters flawlessly, including the kids. Caviezel has always manifested a deep sense of caring/passion in the characters he's portrayed in movies & TV. America and the world is showing just how much care for the children is on the minds of people. See it, please don't be unaware of what's being done to the children (and adults, too).

The Equalizer 3
(2023)

Some guys just bring it...!
I had no real expectations, good or not, regarding this 3rd installment of the Equalizer series. I like Denzel Washington movies so I was simply happy to see him again on the big screen. E1 & 2 were really enjoyable to watch. E3 left me thinking I'd like to see #4, but then at the end of the movie, I thought it'd be fine to not see another one. E3, imo, was so good I could leave it here. As one reviewer posted, "Denzel is so damn cool"...yep, there's no doubt about that. While E3 is different from the other 2, it is well-written, kept me guessing and as usual Denzel doesn't "act", he "is". What's next for Mr. Washington? Dunno, but I hope he doesn't wait years to bring it to the big screen again.

Beast
(2022)

Entertaining mostly because of the acting
The only reason I watched this movie is because of its start, Edris Alba, one of my fav actors. I didn't expect much from a movie about a rogue lion. But I was pleasantly surprised at the storyline and especially the acting. I mean, in a movie like this, it's got to be difficult to not "act" in such a fantasy film. But the acting was, imo, spot on. These people really believed there was a rogue lion out to get them. I was watching for some silliness, but found none. For the reviewer comparing lions to domestic cats...the point was missed -- this was a fantasy movie, not a movie about a real lion and how he compares to a cat. I liked it, was entertained and would see it again on the big screen. Good final fight scene, too, along with good CGI. I didn't give it 10 stars because I thought it could have included more background details on the characters.

The Matrix Resurrections
(2021)

Lost the blush of youth...
Alas, I almost wish I didn't see this installment. I loved the Matrix trilogy, even though with each installment the story line lost a bit of the original's greatness. This was so slow moving and so was Keanu (who I really like as an actor). Absolutely none of the passion in his character of Matrix 1. I was asking myself if he was way too old to do this one. Even with Trinity coming back, there was no chemistry that I could see or feel between them, not like before. The Analyst played by P. N. Harris, was so miscast, imo, with way too much over-acting. I wasn't convinced at all. And, wait, at the end are they telling us that Trinity is "the One" because she saves Neo? And what's with the mark on the bridge of Priyanka's nose? I read she got a not so good nose job(s), but c'mon, that mark was distracting. Nothing else to say except this was a 2nd rate version of a sequel to a much-beloved franchise and a terrible way to end it. And I stayed through to the end, fyi.

21 Bridges
(2019)

So much more than the Wakanda leader!
I didn't expect too much from this movie but CB is a really good actor, imo, right up there with Denzel! (I'd love to see them together in a movie). The story got my interest pretty much right out the gate and it didn't let up throughout the movie. For me, totally entertaining and the only con is that it was a bit too short. I would have liked to have seen more character development, but that did not take away from my enjoyment of the movie. Frankly, I'd like to see CB's character developed into a couple more movies.

The Art of Self-Defense
(2019)

Is Jesse underrated?
Yes, I think he is. Every movie he's in has been good, imo. This one was a surprisingly interesting, disturbing entrance into the world of martial arts and real emotions. I did not know what this movie was about before seeing it and didn't expect too much. But thought since Jesse Eisenberg was in it, it would not be a total waste of time. Wow, I was surprised at the dramatic excellence of this film and the very good portrayals of the various characters. Yes, it's about martial arts but it's also a lot more than that as Jesse's character moves through his life and makes some changes that are good and end up pretty dark.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
(2019)

A bucket load of fun, laughs!
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham always deliver, imo. And to have them together is 2 hours of wild, funny, fun, crazy & sometimes ridiculous (but it works) good times. I really liked this movie and was engaged from start to finish. It's total escapism for sure, but that's a part of entertainment that we're missing so much today. Keep politics out of entertainment and give us fun and laughs and yes, some emotional moments, as in this movie. Loved the little guy making a welcome appearance. I just may see this one again in a couple of months.

Run the Race
(2018)

Twists and not as predictable as I thought...
Finally, a movie that shows that two brothers can actually like one another! It's about time. I like the chemistry between the actors that played two brothers involved in sports, primarily football. I thought I knew what to expect but this movie threw in a couple of unexpected twists while leaving out some expected ones. It's about good family relationships and strains and inspiration in the midst of troubles. The one thing that didn't thrill me was the romantic relationship between one brother & his girlfriend. It was too formulaic and there wasn't much chemistry between the actors to make up for that. But it wasn't so distracting that it cut into my enjoyment of the film.

Glass
(2019)

Glass - really the end??
What a nice way to tie things up! I've watched the characters Dunn (Bruce Willis), Crumb (James McAvoy) & Glass )Sam L. Jackson) in M. Night's previous movies with enthusiasm and this movie comes through in spades. I would have liked a bit more story development is my only complaint, it seemed to move too fast. Nonetheless, I liked bringing the 3 together and the twists the storyline takes. And what can one say about James McAvoy!? What an utterly believable portrayal of his crazy Crumb character. Wow, he's good the way he changes personalities so seamlessly. Again I say that I like movies that entertain without having to use and overabundance of foul language, grossness or sex. If you've seen the other movies with these characters, you'll better understand some of the points the movie makes. And I love that they brought back the actor who played Dunn's little son to portray his grown up son.

Isn't It Romantic
(2019)

Cute, funny & FUN
I'm liking Rebel Wilson more and more. She is really good with physical comedy and I laughed out loud at times while watching this movie. Rebel plays her character totally believable (and loveable) and the characters that surround her are nothing but complementary. I like that the movie makes no bones about talking about ideas that are not politically correct. Like telling your daughter that she won't amount to much because of the way she looks and the world is good to pretty girls. Some moms do that, ya know. It's not a good thing but you see Rebel's character ultimately overcome that kind of brainwashing. I like it when I leave a movie smiling and feeling glad that I saw it. Light, entertaining and funny...worth every penny to see it.

Cold Pursuit
(2019)

Liam was born for this type of thriller
As usual I was very entertained by this movie. Great storyline and characters I wanted to watch. And while some may think Liam's action movies are over the top (and maybe some are) I can see a man doing the stuff he does to get vindication. It's darkly comedic at times and had an ending I didn't expect. Laura Dern is a good actress and I wish she were cast in more movies and her chemistry with Liam was good, imo. I liked watching them in scenes together. OK, while this movie may be formulaic to some, to me it's what I go to see movies for...entertainment.

What Men Want
(2019)

Nothin' like Mel Gibson's great movie "What Women Want"
Flat out this movie was too gross to appreciate the infrequent funny lines. This is about a nasty female in corporate America. I was surprised and disappointed in Taraji taking on this kind of low-class role. For me there was nothing at all entertaining about this movie and it ticked me off seeing another portrayal of this type of woman. I'm trying to think of something to say about the movie, but I can't. It had nothing in it to make it stand out. It was silly and portrayed the ugly, nasty side of some women today. Ultra formula comedy and a waste of film, imo. Gosh, I really dislike it when they put out trash like this...as you can probably tell.

Aquaman
(2018)

Now THIS is Aquaman!
At the risk of sounding "gushy" I really, really enjoyed Aquaman. Sure Jason Mamoa was a big reason for that, but this was a pure fantasy excitement ride. A few times I had to remind myself to "relax" while watching the almost non-stop action. IMO, forget all previous incarnations of Aquaman, Momoa nails the part. Gritty but not too much, cool but not fake cool...he's just cool period, perfect physically for the role. I mean wouldn't Aquaman be 6' 4" and very handsome? The action and CGI of this movie are beautiful, you really get to delve into fantasy-land for 2 hours. Every character was portrayed well by each actor. There is no portrayal that I didn't like. And it has a good story line that kept me interested. Frankly, it was so entertaining I've already seen it twice and plan to see it in IMAX at least once more. Definitely a BIG screen movie as there are scenes where there is a lot going on visually.

Mortal Engines
(2018)

Expected more from Peter Jackson
I suppose when one has done something like the fantastic Lord of the Rings trilogy & the Hobbit movies, people like me tend to expect more greatness on that level. No so with this movie. It was OK and probably worth seeing on the big screen for the CG effects, but the story line and characters did nothing to endear the movie to me. Neither did the actors. They were, imo, all ACTING. I didn't care about the characters at all and I LOVE action & fantasy movies and see every one of them generally. While not being horrible, it was kind of boring. Oh! I almost forgot, a bit of saving grace for me was Hugo Weaving...I have liked this actor since I noticed him in The Matrix movies. And he was exceptional in the LOTR trilogy.

The Mule
(2018)

Clint never disappoints
One reviewer called it "slow burn" and that is exactly what Eastwood does so well. Other than his acting ability, Eastwood's movies always have something to say, something interesting to watch, imo. The Mule was one of those movies I thought I had figured out by the trailer alone. No so, interesting & involving story line this movie is a nice change from the action-animation-comedy movies we had in 2018.

Colette
(2018)

Wish I would have checked out the story more
From the trailer I thought this was going to be one of those English type dramas that I love so much. I like Keira Knightly generally and was looking forward to a good drama. Was I disappointed to find this is the story of a couple of people who were talented but rather seedy characters. What is talent without character? Nothing, imo. Had I known the storyline, I would have definitely passed this one up. It's a DVD rental if even that. Bottomline the trailer was misleading, therefore it's on me that I didn't look further into this story before going to the movies.

Bad Times at the El Royale
(2018)

You know a movie's good when you don't know where it's going & you love it!
To me the title is detrimental to this movie. It's kinda corny and this movie is anything but corny. It is the ultimate "who done it" that's been missing lately. I loved the cast, the storyline, the set. And while I am a big Chris Hemsworth fan, I hated his character because he played it so well. This is a very well-cast movie with Cynthia Erivo and Lewis Pullman doing stellar jobs with their characters! I really enjoyed every moment of this movie and I didn't think it slow but taking time to develop characters and story. So when things started to move quickly, you have a good sense of the "why's". Kudos to the always-good Jeff Bridges. And since Man Men, I've always liked Jon Hamm. To be able to make a good movie like this on virtually one set is amazing.

First Man
(2018)

I did NOT want to see this movie
I know the story and have seen the movies/documentaries about this particular flight. But there was nothing else at this time so I figured I'd just bear it out. Well I could not be more wrong about a movie. This movie was great and very entertaining. It was a different take on the 1st man on the moon story. They developed the characters better, the flight training scenes and simulation and take off were captivating and exciting. So was the music. Ryan Gosling was perfect for this part. It gave me a new appreciation for our abilities as a nation because if you think about it, this was quite a feat indeed. Don't miss this one on the big screen...I saw it in IMAX...the bigger the better for this one.

A Star Is Born
(2018)

A perfect movie...
Bradley Cooper can sing! Over the years he's proven his acting ability very well but hearing him sing makes me believe he can also have a music career. We all know LG can sing but surprisingly she can definitely act with only a couple of times when she seemed forced. The chemistry between these two was solid, although Cooper tends to have good chemistry with his co-stars, imo. This movie has the things that make for an entertaining movie...good acting, good music and good drama. And I appreciated that it wasn't so music-centered that the drama was lacking. The character development was good and the storyline kept my interest throughout the movie. Good directing by Cooper caused it to flow well with only a couple of times where it seemed to skip a beat. You won't be sorry you saw this movie on the big screen.

Venom
(2018)

What a ride!
Loved this movie. I wondered about Tom Hardy in this part but he's perfect & I can't imagine anyone else doing a better job. This movie is exciting, fun with some solid laughs. Nothing gratuitous here. Just be sure to go with someone who doesn't chat during a movie because you don't want to miss any of the funny lines.

I did not get a very good impression from the trailer and wasn't really expecting too much from Venom. I left the movie with a big smile on my face - love it when that happens at the movies. Lots of good action sequences especially the street chase scenes.

This is one of those movies I'll see again just because it's so entertaining!

A Simple Favor
(2018)

Surprisingly good...
I really enjoyed this movie much more than I thought I would. I'm not a fan of Anna Kendrick but I do like Henry Golding, so I went to see it. I was surprised at how I was enjoying this movie from the get-go. All the actors were cast very well and the topper of it all is that it's a true story!

It's easy on the eyes, too. Nice, easy colors. Some funny moments that made me think the story was a bit over the top (I didn't know it was a true story; you get that info at the end).

Also it gave me an appreciation of Anna Kendrick. She plays kooky very well. Maybe I'll see her other older movies now. Blake Lively was impressive, too. Very enjoyable night at the movies!

BlacKkKlansman
(2018)

Good balance
I'm not a Spike Lee fan, necessarily. This movie has given me a reason to become one. What I liked most about this movie, other than the imaginative title, is that Spike Lee shows that there is also camaraderie between black and white, something that is very true in real life, but unfortunately that doesn't make the news headlines. And this is back in the 70's! I was pleasantly surprised to see a movie that showed that. Granted it must have been a part of Ron Stallworth's experience, but nonetheless, I appreciate that Spike Lee appropriately focused on it. The movie itself was entertaining, funny and moving. John David Washington did a great job portraying Stallworth. And I loved Adam Driver's character. He's turning out to be one of my fav actors.

With all the hassles of "racism" in today's America, I loved that this movie showed one man's story of courage, imagination and success assisted, helped and applauded by his workmates...regardless of his or their color. Bravo to Spike Lee. This is also a part of real life.

Crazy Rich Asians
(2018)

Understanding Asian attitudes...
I like this movie...a lot. It was glitzy, over-the-top and fun. With some potential for good romance*. Yes, it was predictable but the movie was about the characters. And I'll tell you, they got (or the book got) the Asian family just about perfect. From what I've been told, this is life in Singapore for the ultra wealthy so I don't have a problem with the excesses.

*The only problem I have is with the main female character, Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu. What a miscast, imo! With a movie this good how could the casting director get it so wrong. Everyone was in sync except this character. It was like she was in another movie. Not to mention there was no chemistry between the Rachel and Nick characters which made every scene they were in stiff, boring and unrealistic. UGH...and there are 3 books in the series. I know it would be weird but if Rachel appears in the other 2 books, I hope they recast it. Not personal to Constance, just business.
