Face-Off: The Paranormal Spanish Civil War
2 titles |
Public
Two recently-made films set in the Spanish Civil War used paranormal themes and imagery: Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone. Both centered on children growing up in this horrific time, and so perhaps the ominous feel of the time was in a way translated in a child's mind into these apparitions.
Both, interestingly enough, were also directed by Guillermo del Toro. Which one is your favorite?

Surviving the Apocalypse: Worth It?
15 titles |
Public
Would you rather survive an apocalypse or perish in it? It probably depends on the type of apocalypse, and the ruin it creates, whether struggling in that ruin is better or worse than dying before having to experience it. Here is a list of films and TV series which deal with post-apocalyptic scenarios. Which would you dread surviving to see the most?
(Note 1: I'm not including stuff involving zombies, at least for now.)
(Note 2: By "apocalypse" I mean an event that has drastically reduced the population of the Earth or (in BSG's case) home planet(s), i.e. where most people did die. Thus no dystopias where population is still comparable to now, or greater, even if the unpleasantness is caused by environmental crisis or massive war/takeover by tyrants which one may deem "apocalyptic" in a manner of speaking.)

Face Off: Bron/Broen vs. The Bridge
2 titles |
Public
In 2011, a unique detective drama called Bron or Broen ("Bridge" in Swedish and Danish, respectively) came out as a joint Swedish and Danish production. The series began with a mysterious dead body left on the Oresund Bridge connecting Copenhagen, Denmark with Malmo, Sweden--but it became part of a larger story with many threads connecting the two nations, and it explored a variety of political and social issues relevant to the area, along with some fascinating character dynamics, particularly with the two lead detectives, once from each of the two nations. In 2013, a US version called The Bridge was produced, which involved a very similar story centered on the border between the US and Mexico at the bridge between El Paso and Juarez--but with its larger threads dealing with issues relevant to that region. Which of these do you like better?

Which of these two recent character-driven thriller TV shows has you more riveted?
The Americans--a Cold War spy drama set in the early 1980s, involving KGB operatives completely integrated into American society as a suburban family;
The Blacklist--involving a wanted criminal mastermind who's made a deal with (or is he craftily manipulating?) the FBI, to supply them information on his more insidious enemies in the criminal underworld.
