Danger Man
(1964)

A classic spy drama
'Danger Man' has for years been shown here in Australia, week-days at 5am on channel 9, sometimes accompanied by the Canadian thriller 'Seaway', also in b/w.

Out of similar shows from this era, like 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' & the wonderful 'Edgar Wallace Mysteries', 'Danger Man' holds up the extremely well.

As well as great scripts, & the dry delivery of Mr McGoohan, the guest stars are great to see too. Today's episode had Hammer Horror actress Barbara Steele guest starring.

I am taping these shows to blank blu-ray discs, & can fit 13 episodes or 12 hours of HD content per disc, after removing the ads. I started doing this because Seaway is not on DVD & rarely seen, elsewhere. Danger Man is a great quality show that is remembered for influencing so many others, its a must see.

Murder in Soho
(1939)

JACK LA RUE RUNS A HIGHCLASS NIGHTCLUB
I watched this movie recently, after reading all the mostly bad reviews on here, & enjoyed it. Its nice to see ruggedly handsome Jack La Rue play the gangster nightclub owner. He is very charming and suave, but when he cracks, its like lightening. There are a lot of great characters in this relatively short film, & amusing moments. Australian born Googie Withers stands out in a rather light headed Billie Burke type role, as part of a comedy duo, waiting for their big break. There are a couple of running gags, the guys who look after the boss playing darts all day, & the couple playing the slot machine. I also liked a part of the dance floor opening up in a circular platform, that goes down then up.

Not for one moment was I bored, the clothes and sets are great, & Jack La Rue holds his own, in this curiosity set in Soho.

Seaway
(1965)

SEAWAY : A TIGHT WELL MADE SERIES
Seaway has been screening here in Australia across the summer of 2021-2022 on channel 9's GEM daily at noon. The quality of the shows is great, with interesting stories & great guest stars. The lead actor is particularly good & charismatic. I read that this show is Canadian, & rarely seen elsewhere. I think this show holds up very well due to the quality of the scripts & the acting.

The Laundromat
(2019)

Meryl shines in interesting take on greed
I watched this film because it was reviewed rather well on here, and I do enjoy Meryl Streep in almost anything. Her character's storyline is very intriguing, and you care what happens to her. I was far less impressed with the two male leads who seemed to camp it up far too much for a serious subject that I don't find at all funny. They just become more annoying and arrogant, and you want to see more of Meryl's character's journey. At the end there is a good twist I honestly didn't see coming, which I won't spoil here. That made me look back to see how I ever missed it. Be aware the secondary stories show quite a ruthless side to these really hideous people who take advantage of others, and their greed for money.

This Beautiful Fantastic
(2016)

This Beautiful Wonderful film.
It is so nice to find a gem of a movie like this that gives you that old feeling only classic films can give you. The lead character would-be-author, who's boss is an hilarious head librarian, could've been played by Audrey Hepburn in the late 50's. She has a cantankerous old neighbor, and a backyard garden she has to beautify, so she doesn't get evicted. Throw in a male cook who has been abruptly treated by the neighbor, and a love interest with a young hot bespectacled inventor. This all makes for a simply beatuful treat of a film.

Dans la brume
(2018)

A slow intimate buildup with outstanding actors & story.
They had a Romain Duris film festival here on SBS World Movies recently, so I became very well acquainted with this extremely versatile actor. From conman to hustler, from cross-dresser to loving father, Romain's films are well woth seeing. I watched this with no knowledge of the plot, so it crept up on me. A family finds themselves in their neighbors flat in an upper level Paris apartment, just above a deathly fog that has overtaken the city. They have an invalid daughter below in their flat, who for now is safe in her 'bubble' as long as the battery holds out. This is about a real group of people, and their struggle to survive. They are completely cut off from the world, except for an old battery radio. I don't usually like catastrophe films, but this one was excellent, touching and moving, as well as engrossing.

The Twilight Zone
(2019)

Beyond Awful
This claptrap drivel is beyond awful, its extremely uncomfortable viewing. This first episode about a comedian is so badly written, you can't tell the difference between the jokes that are meant to be good, and the ones that are bad. There is too much unneccesary swearing. The twist at the end is pathetic, and such a letdown. This is a woeful excuse for a reboot of a classic series.

Happy Birthday, Wanda June
(1971)

Truly awful
This is one of those movies that you watch like a car accident, and you can't believe its so bad. I'm surprised it lasted on the stage as a play for 97 performances, or however many there were. Its filled with normally good actors who all overact to the point of absurdity. Susannah York and Rod Steiger are at their worst here. To make matters worse everyone tries to outshout each other, and once Rod Steiger returns from the dead, he shouts the loudest. Its like a particularly bad Here's Lucy episode, where everyone shouts, but without Lucy, and without the laughs...just with her kids overacting. Its truly excruciatingly sexist and racist, and I could add a lot more words where they came from. The problem is as well as the awful acting, I just don't find the jokes funny at all, or why someone would think they were funny in the first place. This film does't even fall into the category of being so bad its good, its just excruciating full stop. You feel like you're watching an amateur play. The son is especially awful, and Don Murray is so hammy I couldn't believe it. Why the director chose to have everyone overact in this way I have no idea. Even if I saw it on the stage I would've walked out. And why would anyone think a little girl in heaven saying she's glad she's dead, and was hit by a truck funny? Then she virtually tells the audience to go and kill a soldier...or anyone they can, because they'd be better off in heaven. Whatever you do, don't keep watching hoping it gets better.... because it will be something you'll never be able to wipe from your mind. It was made to shock, but it truly is just a hateful negative mess. Robert. Australia.

Jacquou le croquant
(2007)

Great Film That Sweeps You Away
I have just read the other reviews and must say I loved this film enormously because it is so beautiful and authentic to the period, and not in the mindset of those hideous films the American's churn out like popcorn, with Hansel and Gretel with machine guns or whatever. I didn't find the pace slow at all, watching the lead character grow up was sad and gut-wrenching, a beautiful performance by the child actor. This film is filled with subtle tender moments, and also moments of horror early on, when the boy loses his beloved pet dog. The arrogance and non feeling for others less fortunate by the aristocrats set the tone for the film. The sets and country scenes are superb, and once Gaspard Ulliel appears as the boy grown up, you really are aware of a great performance, by one of France's hottest young actors. (soon to be seen as Yves Saint Laurent in the biography picture of that name). I actually wanted more, and wondered what happened to the characters after the film had finished. Its hard to explain how I feel after seeing a good French film. But if you have visited Paris and truly felt its magic, then you are halfway there. This film sweeps you away to another time and place, makes you feel empathy for the characters, makes you shed a few tears, and long for the hero to win. In the end, when Gaspard remembers his childhood dog running through the grass... in his mind, that really got to me.... as all the best classics do. Robert. Australia.

Alfie Darling
(1975)

ALFIE DARLING A pleasant old fashioned romp
Alfie Darling, the sequel to the classic ALFIE, is a pleasant old fashioned romp, that keeps you interested, but is not in the class of the original. The very handsome lead looks like a young Joe Dallesandro (cult underground actor for Andy Warhol) and is quite adequate in making you believe he's a big 'ladies man'. He also shows a bit of sweetness to go with those boyish good looks.

I'm not condemning this film for being sexist, its more titillating, and typical of the type of films they were showing as the second feature at Drive-Ins at the time. Its also great to see Joan Collins, a few years before she did Dynasty, showing a lot more than expected, actually totally topless. She plays a sort of well to do lady who likes to be wined and dined with all the charms and graces, but is also very kinky in the sack. Her scenes are quite camp actually, and worth seeing this film for, if you liked her in The Stud and The Bitch. Joan Collins is a sweetheart in real life, whom I met once at a book signing, and is a living treasure to this day. Robert. Australia.
