Hazel
(1961)

It Grows On You
I recently discovered this little sit-com gem from the early 1960's (although it feels like the 1950's). I'd never even heard of this show before, but I'm glad that it's survived and some station director (Antenna-TV) decided to re-run it.

The first time I saw it I nearly turned it off, the main character Hazel has a rather 'distinctive' voice but I stuck with it. After viewing a few more episodes I came to love the character because of the nutty predicaments she gets herself and the family in and the fact that she's got a heart of gold. Things always turn out Okey-Dokey by the end of the 30 minute show as would be expected in a 50's sit-com. The best analogy I can make is if The Brady Bunch gave Alice the maid a spin-off with good writers and an affable supporting cast. Overall it's really tame TV, but fun to watch.

Hardcore Pawn
(2009)

Jerry Springer Will Buy And Sell Your -GOLD-
After watching 2 episodes of "Hardcore Pawn" and noticing that the producer of the show is Richard Dominick, I wasn't surprised. Dominick is/was the producer of the Jerry Springer show, and unless you've been living under a rock, you know what drek that show is.

Others have commented on the curious similarity, or dissimilarity to 'Pawn Stars', if you were hoping for something in the same vein, forget about it. Pawn Stars in a more interesting take on the PBS show 'Antiques Roadshow' and is interesting as well as entertaining. HP is televised ghetto exploitation, I felt like taking a shower after watching it.

It gets 2 stars because the camera operator didn't drop the camera, I'm feeling generous today.

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
(1973)

I Should Have Known Better
Where to start? First and most obvious is the truly annoying 'soundtrack' provided by the droning voice of Bob Dylan, If you're a fan, I'm sorry. Bob Dylan can't act (or sing) and this movie is proof positive of that, but I'm sure it put butts in the theater seats due to his celebrity. Second, The story was obviously revisionist history run amok, the movie loses points for that as well. Third, I can't stand Kris Kristofferson, not to mention that he's completely mis-cast in the roll of Billy the Kid. Fourth, Sam Peckinpah is highly over rated as a director (not that anyone else could have made this mess of a movie more palatable)

Are you getting the point?

James Coburn did an admirable job but I got the feeling that he knew this movie was doomed from the start.

Lifeboat
(1944)

I'm On Board
How in the world do you make a 96 minute movie where the entire thing happens on a 30 ft. lifeboat? You commission Alfred Hitchcock to do it.

Nope there are no flashback montages or dream sequences. You start with a shipping vessel that's already under water after being hit by a German torpedo, one lifeboat and a fantastic cast including Tallulah Bankhead and Walter Slezak among others and let the story wash over you. Putting the technical challenges aside this was a real feat of movie making from 1944.

If you're 9 or 90 you are sure to enjoy Lifeboat.

Thank's for reading

Hardball with Chris Matthews
(1997)

Generally Unwatchable
Putting the obvious political bent of the show aside, is it informative or at least watchable ? The answer is usually no. Someone commented that the host must be bi-polar and after thinking about it I have to agree. Matthews runs so hot and cold from minute to minute you can almost see the smoke rising from his ears. The word disjointed comes to mind. As of this writing there are several other liberal shows on the same network and I suggest any one of them. This one stays around for the same reason the 82 year old blind janitor is still working at your grade school you attended as a child, nobody has the heart to tell him it's time to pack up and go home.

See Here, Private Hargrove
(1944)

On Par With Stripes
If you loved the movie Stripes, and who didn't, this is basically the World War II version and dare I say made me laugh out loud more. I will agree with some of the other reviewers that a bit of the movie is a little dated but come on folks it's 68 years old.

Robert Walker as the guy who just couldn't seem to follow Army protocol no matter how hard he tried, until he meets Donna Reeds' character was both funny and sweet. Both gave a great performance as did the supporting cast, and the movie was actually a big hit with G.I.s serving overseas when the movie was released. If you get the chance to check this out I don't think you'll be disappointed, It actually is laugh out loud funny.

Sliced
(2010)

Not So Good
First there was 'How It's Made' (there have been other spin-off shows), then there was a show called 'Deconstructed'. The former is a fascinating series about how everyday things you use, or at least see, are made. The latter is the reverse, a tech. carefully deconstructs an item to show the viewer how it works.

Enter: SLICED, In a nut-shell you have the host (John Mc Calmont) hamming it up bigtime for the TV camera. There's really no educational value to his antics like cutting a stove in half with a 16 inch gas circular saw and sledge hammer, ripping out a heating element and saying "well look at this"(I hope that wasn't a 'spoiler'). If you find monster truck rallies and demolition derby's a good way to spend your free time this show is for you, otherwise, don't waste 30 minutes of your precious time.

Dream Wife
(1953)

What A Mess
I really love Cary Grant but this movie must have been one of those scripts that crossed his desk and was marked with a $$$ sign on it.

There's no excuse for such schlock. There was no chemistry with his fiancée 'Effie' and there was none with his 'to be bride' Tarji'. The whole damn movie was a mess. There's probably some goofs that's going to complain about racism or sexism in the whole mess, I was just wondering if there was another movie that the very cute actress Betta St. John is in. She's a looker but even she's no reason to bother with this flop of a 'movie'. I wonder what were they thinking???? I honestly can't give this more than a couple of stars in good faith.
