I wanted to love this movie before I saw it because it had Kiernan Shipka in it, from "The Blackcoat's Daughter". (That is a great movie.)
"Totally Killer", though, is a miss, seemingly written by people that didn't quite have a grasp on either 80's or present day culture.
The diologue, especially for the 80's, is wrong, as there's gratuitous use of "WTF", and other modern phrases/sensibilities that weren't common in 1980's suburban teen lexicon.
I didn't take the progressive references seriously at all. How could you? They were poorly done, and took away from the fun of the movie. They achieved nothing.
The story is creative, but "clunky" as an earlier reviewer described. This film could have been stripped down a lot----- fewer characters, a bit less convoluted plot----- and it would have been much better.
The writing was near-miss. Most of the timing was off and a lot of the jokes didn't land because of this.
The young actors just don't mesh well. They don't present well as 80's teens, especially in regard to dating and sexual norms of the time. They are an odd assortment to work with and this was simply poor casting and awkward writing.
Kiernan Shipka is fine, but she's wasted here.
This movie could have been so much better with a streamlined cast, simpler plot, and sharper writing. What a shame!

This was ok for one season. That's all that was originally planned. After 1-2 sessions, even edgy shows like this wear thin.
The series has provocative, adult/sexual themes. In the first episode, I was surprised to see one of the male characters holding his penis and presenting his balls to his wife. Completely over-the-top. This was not done as part of a sex scene, so, what was the purpose? Why the specific references to gay anal sex in the subsequent episodes of season one? Seemed unnecessary and done to be edgy and to mainstream such concepts.
The Writer and Director, Mike White, is the creator. The show is a reflection of his life and worldview. There's nothing wrong with it, but it seems to be the reason this series is so popular. The plots are ok, nothing too spectacularly interesting, and some are boring. I fast-forwarded through the Jennifer Coolidge sub-plot because it was pathetic snd repetitive. Some of the characters are interesting, others are not.
Its a mixed bag for season one. Its definitely not on par with some of the best series in the last 10 years.

This film by Osgood Perkins uses the Stephen King short story, "The Monkey" as an instrument to highlight more metaphysical themes.
Its about death and the randomness of who dies and when. And, as you will learn in the movie, "that sucks".
If you read about Mr. Perkins family history and his relationships with his father and his brother, you can see the influences clearly. This made me appreciate the movie much more. There are similar personal references in Perkin's movie "Longlegs."
Yes, its a horror film with gory kills delivered by an evil monkey.
But look deeper into Osgood Perkin's life and you will see the true messages represented in the film. That makes "The Monkey" special.
