Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
(2014)

Signifies Nothing
To quote a character from Birdman (man on the sidewalk): ...a tale full of sound and fury told by an idiot signifying nothing." That well sums up my opinion of the movie. I enjoy most well done dry humor and satire, but not this one, nor do I enjoy most Woody Allen films either. And, like Woody Allen's work, this one is technically very good. The movie attempts to be philosophical and although I am philosophical, this is just bad philosophy. Most of the characters are engaging in mental masturbation, totally ungrounded in reality and centered on themselves. There are few honest, authentic "real" interactions. Based on this film's user ratings, this is funny to many, but not to me. If you want to watch a film that has meaning, see something else.

The Young Person's Guide to Becoming a Rock Star
(1998)

Gerry Butler is in 3 Episodes, but didn't do own singing
Gerry Butler is truly hilarious and highly entertaining playing the stuck-on-himself rock star in Guide to Becoming a Rock Star, and a great example of 28-year-old Gerry's talent and star presence. However, note that he is only in episodes 2, 3 & 4 for a grand total of 10 minutes screen time. But if you are a die-hard Butler fan as I am, it is well worth it, even if you aren't a music business fan. Also, the series itself is very funny. Gerry's singing in this series had to be dubbed - it doesn't sound like his voice at all and looks dubbed. I can't find a credit online for who did his singing, or one that states it is in fact his voice.
