DeWanda Wise plays Nola Darling in this new updated version of this story set in present day. If you have seen the movie you know Nola has three lovers. Mars, Jaime and Greer. We see her navigating the art world and the three relationships she has with these three men. I personally really liked this series. I think Spike did a great job of updating the story to the present day. The series has some great dialogue and some funny and heart breaking moments. I recommend this series.
The film is based on a play about One Night In Miami where in February 1964, Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown discuss their roles in the civil rights movement of the 1960's. The film starts just after then known as Cassius Clay has won the world title. The four men meet up in a hotel room to discuss and reflect on what is going on in America. The film is very well acted, Leslie Odom Junior as Sam Cooke is the outstanding performance. He is sure to get a best supporting actor nomination. The film is very dialogue heavy and you can tell it is based on a play. The conversations they are having are very interesting and powerful. Regina King does a great job directing in her directorial debut. She lets the actors do their thing and stands back. This film feels timely with what is going on in America right now. There are several outstanding scenes, one is when they start chatting on a rooftop, one of the others is the final scene with Sam Cooke. I won't give anything away but it is a great poignant scene. This film is very well acted, well written and well directed. Its one of the best films of 2020.
This is a heartbreaking film about a young couple dealing with a loss of their child after a home birth gone wrong. Vanessa Kirby plays Martha gives an Oscar worthy performance as a woman struggling to deal with her grief and trying to move on. She displays such beautiful depth of acting dimensions to her character. The performance is the best I have seen in a long time. Ellen Burysten as her mother is very good as well trying to help her daughter deal with her grief. She has a very emotional show stopper scene that is worthy of a best supporting actress nomination. Shia Labeouf is also very effective as Sean, Martha's husband who is also struggling to deal with his grief as well. The film is not easy to watch, but it is a very rewarding experience, I thought the story was an interesting topic to deal with and I believe it is one of the best films of 2020. I highly recommend it.
Cassie who has had a bad incident in her past pretends be drunk at bars every night and when the guy takes her home turns the tables on them and hurts them. Carey Mulligan plays the role to perfection, she is so smooth and cunning and funny. Cassie one day meets a guy called Ryan and you think maybe shes found a nice guy finally but things dont quite work out they way you think they would. I think this film is fantastic, really witty and sharp dialogue and really omg moments you dont see coming. Carey Mulligan deserves an Oscar nomination. This is one of the best films of the last year.
Fern played brilliantly by Frances McDormand has lost her job in the great recession. She decides to track around the midwest of America in an R.V. She meets a lot of interesting people in search of something, finding meaning to her life. This is a very beautiful film. Beautifully shot with some amazing cinematography it is beautifully acted and a film that really stays with you. The film is really well directed by Chloe Zhao chinese american director who has had acclaim on the independent film circut. This film is a slice of life of america that you dont usually see. I think it is one of the years best films
George Clooney plays Augustine, an explorer who is in the Antarctic and trying to get a message to a group on a space station not to return home. This is because there are been a catastrophic event back on earth. This film is beautifully shot, the cinematography is gorgeous to look at. Clooney does a great job of directing and he does a great acting job as well. A guy who is desperate for human contact again after being stuck alone for so long. Felicity Jones does a great job as one of the people in the space station she shows so really emotion and de-mentions to her character. You really feel for her and the rest of the crew. I really enjoyed the immersive nature of this film. I think it is one of the best films you can watch right now on Netflix
Based on a play set in 1927 jazz era of Chicago. The film surrounds a recording session of Ma Rainey played incredibly by the great Viola Davis. She comes to blows with the young trumpet played Levee played by the late great Chadwick Boseman. The film has some great set pieces and music. The film also has some great dialogue and some terrific scenes of characters going at each other. If you love films based on plays you will love this movie. Viola Davis is phenomenal as the lead singer she has such a presence on screen. Boseman in his last performance really gives it his all. He has some really funny and also really emotional scenes. The whole cast do a great supporting job as well. I really enjoyed this film. It is one of the best films of 2020.
Mank is a great film about an alcoholic screenwriter who co wrote the screenplay of Citizen Kane with Orson Welles. It begins with Mank writing the screenplay and then delves into flashbacks when he was highly thought after in the early 30's. The black and white cinematography is stunning to look at with the shadows and bright lights. Gary Oldman as Mank is terrific portraying a great screenwriter but also showing his dark side with the drinking and gambling and womanizing. The screenplay is very cleverly written with some great snappy dialogue, with some witty one liners. The direction from Fincher is top notch and I think he is a lock for Best Director at the Oscars. Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davis is terrific, very witty and pops off the screen her performance was a pleasure to watch. There is the argument over who really got more credit over the screenplay for Citizen Kane, i personally think Mank wrote the bulk of it and Orson contributed. Orson of course was the actor, producer and director of the film and it was an amazing achievement. This is a great film in itself and I highly recommend it. If you love movies about old Hollywood this is for you.
This series is about Beth Harmon a young girl orphaned at the age of 9 that discovers she has an amazing talent for chess. The series starts with her as a young girl in the orphanage and she gets taught by a janitor to play chess. As we see her grow up she is played by actress Anya Taylor Jo she gets adopted by a couple at age 13 and then starts entering chess tournaments. She is now invited into a whole new world. The acting in this series is amazing the lead actress as Beth Harmon has so much complexity and demensions to her character. There are some other interesting characters she meets along the way as she starts winning tournaments and gaining fame. Her character is also self destructive taking pills and washing them down with alcohol. Some of the chess playing scenes are thrilling and you dont have to be a huge fan of chess to enjoy them. I loved the costumes in the series set in the 1960s and the cinematography was great as well as been very well written. I really enjoyed this series.
This is a terrific film about a story that not many people know about. It is about a group of people that were protesting the Vietnam War and headed to Chicago to do that in front of the 1968 Democratic convention. The film mostly takes place in the courtroom, with some flashbacks to the rioting and precursors to the violence. For a start I found out about this story when I watched a documentary on 1968 happenings on t.v last year. As far as the film goes I think the performances all around are terrific. Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman was one of the leaders of protesters and he was a real standout funny, heartbreaking and fierce. The film is very dialogue heavy and includes a lot of courtroom scenes but if you love that stuff you will love this movie. I feel the film is very timely as far as division with protestors and police and I just can't say really how great this film was than just to see it as soon as you can. Either watch it in a theatre or if you can't watch it as soon as it hits Netflix I think it is the best film of the year and could win best picture.
Boogie Nights is a very stylish film about the porn industry in the late 70s dating from around 1977 to around 1983. Mark Whalberg is a young man who gets discovered in a bar one night and thanks to his good looks and large member he enters the porn industry. Burt Reynolds plays the porn director in a great career comeback performance. This film is really well shot, some great camera angles and movement you really feel immersed in this world. The soundtrack is amazing. Julianne Moore is also great as a porn actress who has a son she can not see. Her performance is really heart felt. You also see the dark side of the industry with violence and drugs. This is a great film one of the best of the 90s
The Master is a great film starring Joaquin Phoenix as a naval veteran struggling for direction in his life post ww2. He meets Lancaster Dodd played by Philip Seymour Hoffman who leads a cult called the cause. Hoffman is very eccentric and charasmatic, his performance is a real standout. Phoenix is also amazing as a man with real problems searching for meaning in his life. Amy Adams is also solid as Dodds wife. The film was beautifully shot and has a great score. Paul Thomas Anderson is a technically brilliant director. This is one of his best films.
A world of corperate espionage, where you sometimes don't know who the bad guys are. Its a world that is interesting and imersive. John David Washington is in the lead role and is very effective and so is Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debecki is also great. The action scenes are well thought it and very impressive and thrilling. The score and sound in this film are worthy of an Oscar. I really loved the way Nolan directed this film. His vision for films of this nature is really visionary. I loved the screenplay there were so clever lines. I really liked this movie.
I just recently saw He Got Game from 1998 for the first time. I took a long time to see this movie, but I am glad now I finally have. The film is about Jake Shuttlesworth played very well by Denzel Washington who accidentally kills his wife in a domestic dispute. He has a son called Jesus played by NBA star Ray Allen in a great performance. He has to convince Jesus to join a big state college so he can get a shorter jail sentence.
The film develops the father/son relationship very well over time. I thought the performances were great and had many other Spike Lee's trademark images. It also has a great soundtrack.
The film at its heart was more about the father and son relationship than playing basketball. You can see the way a young high school player is being recruited and how buzz over a young player gets created. Its not often a high school star goes to straight to the NBA, but there are exceptions such as Kevin Garnett and the late great Kobe Bryant.
I found this film very moving and I think it is a great part of Spike Lee's incredible catalogue of films.
I don't usually review t.v shows but I just binge watched the first seasons of this great show and wanted to say something about it. Firstly it is a great story about the Roy family dynasty and own a media empire. The acting across the board is fantastic from Brian Cox as Logan Roy, Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy and Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy. Along with Sarah Snook as Shiv Roy are the main characters in this drama. The dialogue is terrific, very funny at times. There are many dynamic scenes between characters that really get you wrapped up in this great drama about family and success.
I watched the whole two seasons within just a couple of weeks and I highly recommend this show.
Daphne played brilliantly by Shailene Woodley is a woman in her 30s who seems to lack direction in her life. She ends up meeting two men in a short space of time that just happen to be best friends. She forms relationships with both men. The film is really raw and feels like you are watching real people just navigate life and relationships. Woodley is terrific as a woman is searching for meaning to her life with struggles along the way. The two male leads are strong as well. The film also has a great sountrack. I really enjoyed this film. I do recommend it.
George Valentin played beautifully by Jean Dujardin is a silent film star who is on top. Then talkies come along and he meets a young aspiring actress called Peppy Miller played really well by Berinice Bejo. His career is on the way down hers is on the way up. I think this film is beautifully shot the cinematography is fantastic with great L.A locations. The costumes are terrific and the score is great. I liked the film when it came out but revisiting again almost ten years later made me appreciate it more. It is a great ode to classic films of the silent era. You feel for Valentin as a silent actor whos career slips away because of talkies. It is a real thing that happened to a lot of silent actors of the day. I really think they film worked having it as a silent film. The direction was great and the acting top notch. I really enjoyed watching this again. I do highly recommend it.
Four African Americans return to Vietnam to find gold they buried during the war and the remains of their fallen brother. We first meet them when they first arrive, the enjoy themselves, get down and boggie on the dance floor and go sight seeing. Lee directs this film in a really great way that develops the characters over the course of the movie. There are also great scenes of flashback of the war with gun fighting. The cinematography in this film is beautiful and the soundtrack is great. These guys go on a crazy adventure searching for this gold and it is a great ride. Well directed with a great script. I really enjoyed this film
Harry Caul played brilliantly by Gene Hackman plays a surveillance man who is listening to a couple through wire tap and discover that they might be murdered.
This film has so many great quiet moments and terrifying moments. The film is really well acted and has some great music. The late John Cazale was also great as Harry's co worker. The film was timely, it came out around the same time as Watergate. It really it has a great intimate feel, a small arthouse film that Coppola made between the two Godfather films that still stands up today.
I recommend it to any film fan looking for something different and wanting to discover yet another great film from the 1970's.
This is a great film about two young lovers called Monika and Harry that decide to leave their boring lives and run away together. This is one of Bergman's early classics, beautifully shot in black and white and has great landscapes. The film has some great dialogue and great close ups with the camera on characters. Monika is a very sensual and sexually confident young woman and Harry goes along for the ride. They have a great love affair along the coast line of where they rode their boat to. There are some melancholy shots of landscapes and beautiful nature going on in the film. The film really takes you away to a place where you love to watch classic movies like this. The film is beautifully acted and shot and I loved this film. I highly recommend it for any Bergman fans or fans of classic cinema
What more could I say about this film that has not already been said. Well i shall just tell you how i feel about the film. I think it is still a classic. Janet Leigh puts in a really good performance as someone who has stolen from her boss and looking to run away. The shower scene I think still has the power to shock it was crazy to consider killing off a main character so early. The real star of the film is of course Norman Bates played chillingly and charmingly by Anthony Perkins. He is the young loner who owns the bates motel, says he lives with his mother. The score by Bernard Hermann is one of the great scores in movies. The film is really suspensful if you have not seen it before. But it is always great to revisit a classic even if you have seen it many times. Hitchcock was a true master and this was one of his best films.
This film is about a professor who is going to receive an award in his home town. He goes on the trip and along the way meets some interesting characters. This film has some surreal dream sequences in them about death and the professor's lost love. There are also some funny moments and some great dialogue. Bergman is a master of human behaviour. You are not sure at times in the film what are dreams and what is reality. It is true auteur filmmaking. I highly recommend this film for film lovers.
This is a classic film about an actress that has become mute that gets looked after by a young nurse. They spend some time out in a kabin on the coast. The nurse tells her stories and their characters seem to come together like they become one person. There are some great shots in this film of the coast line and close ups on the two actresses. The film is a great character study of behaviour, finding out what makes someone tick. I really enjoyed this film. Bergman is using some his great film techniques some experimental. This is one of the great films.
An old man tells his story to another man about his early years as a lobby boy at The Grand Budapest Hotel in 1932. What you get is a very quirky mad cap caper film that is highly entertaining and very funny. Ralph Fiennes plays the consierge who is the lobby boys mentor. Ralph puts in one of his best performances he is very funny and spits out lines in a very witty way. This film has a great ensemble cast and has some great lines and set pieces. I loved the production design and costumes. I really enjoyed this film. Highly recommend it.
Denzel Washington plays Bleek Gilliam a jazz musician who is going back forth between two women. He also has a manager he has known since childhood. This film has great vibriant colours and a great soundtrack. This is one of Denzel Washingtons best performances I think. I love the way Spike moves the camera and pushes in on actors. This film has a lot of life too it and some great jazz numbers. I also love the costumes the actors wear, they are great and very colourful. I really enjoyed this film. Another great film from Spike Lee.
