Blue Beetle
(2023)

Boatload of fun
I never read the original comics or even knew the history of this guy just what I've seen in other animated shows that Beatle was part of. I'm told the movie is very loyal to the original comic story and I thought it was very well done. Some folks just have all the luck, so how do I get an alien artifact to choose me? The movie doesn't fart around at all, the action starts pretty quick and doesn't stop. All the actors played their parts well and the comic relief injections were fast and furious. Other than Beatle is usually portrayed with a male voice that's the only thing that stood out to me and that's really pretty minor. I really hope they make a few more of these and keep the same crew this one was a blast.

Short Circuit
(1986)

Freaking hilarious and well done.
For a family title this movie is great, no profanity very little real violence and a good treatment of what might happen if a machine suddenly became self aware and had to learn about the world just as a child might. The scene with the girl's nut case boyfriend is classic (I won't ruin it for you). The scene in the yard where Johnny learns about death for the first time was very, very, well done. This is one of those situations where the sequels were as good as the first one and not just the same old rehashed stuff. I'd get this movie for my ten year old if they wanted it but even the adults will find something thought provoking in it. Very enjoyable. Must be one of the first movies where anyone tried to shoot a movie using a robot and not just stop action animation or some such.

Dredd
(2012)

If you played the game you'll appreciate this one
I used to play the table roleplaying game Judge Dredd back in the early 1990's we had a great game master and the game was a blast. Whomever wrote this movie either played the game or took the time to do some research. The bikes were taken right out of line drawings in the game books and the weapons were right in line what the weapons in the game could do with the various sorts of ammo and the voice controls. The whole concept of Mega City One was also well treated here. This treatment of Judge Dredd was a ton better than that ridiculous movie with Stallone in the 90's. I'd never seen this actor before in anything but the new trek movies but I thought he did a great job capturing the spirit of the Judge Dredd character. I really liked this movie but I wish they'd spent a little screen time in other adventures before they jumped into the main story line. A lot of folks complain about the violence in the reviews. Well I'm sorry you thought it was so violent but that is/was the spirit of the original world created in the role playing game. Billions of people living in one city that stretched up the east coast of the continental US because that is basically the only place left where humans can live. Only thing they didn't really capture is that in the game the judges had some basic genetic augments that meant they only needed about 20 minutes sleep per day. With all the computers these days it's rare to find anyone that really plays table games anymore except for the civil war and warcraft fanatics with their hundreds of figurines, dice etc. I really enjoyed this and I'm hoping they make another one but this time I hope they have a few more adventures than just the one big one. This was well done and if you played the game or read the graphic novels you'll appreciate it much more than that stallone fiasco from years ago.

The Invisible Man
(2000)

Great writing, great acting, good casting
I loved this series when it was on, I watched it all the time when it was on sci-fi channel. For its time they did pretty darn good with the special effects; these days it would be all CG and a ton cheaper I'm sure. From what I've read it wasn't a matter of being canceled so much as a matter of it was getting too expensive to keep shooting it and there was apparently some squabbling amongst those in control. For the record they didn't kill the main character off, and, they actually "ended" the series with a happy ending. Fawks is still walking around, if they wanted to they could do a movie or a mini series, I just hope they could get the same cast. Fawks and Dobbs played off each other wonderfully, Keeper was really good in her role too. The official...well sometimes you wanted to throttle him but he was good in his role too and he did end up softening a bit to his charges at many points during the series. I can't really think of a single episode that could be called silly or hokey. I just got the whole series to watch all over again, I remember a lot of them but I guess I missed a few too. I'm enjoying them all over again, the stories are not dated, the same sorts of things are still going on today. I don't think I've seen any other movies the lead was in but he's pretty darn good now I've got to go looking for his other stuff. This is a family show, no cursing, a minimum of violence (as shows go today) and thought provoking stories that even most kids will understand while there's also something in there for the older crowd watching with them.
