Mrs. Davis
(2023)

Wild unique ride with a perfect ending
First I should say that I'm a Christian, and I would have given this a 10/10 if it hadn't gotten so weird with Jesus but I still loved it. It's frustrating because with a few tweaks it could have avoided this issue and told more or less the same story and it would have been a lot easier for me to recommend this and fully endorse it, even if it strayed pretty far Biblically. I understand it wasn't the point of the show to tell a Biblically accurate story but there are a few...divergences, let's say...that are a little hard to wave off. It's just like, "Why?" When you could have so easily NOT done this.

That being said, this was a riot and I LOVED probably 80-85% of it which is pretty high for me. I'm so pleased it was a limited series and it wrapped the story up beautifully. I'll definitely be rewatching before too long. Great characters, lots of twists and turns, and so much delightful absurdity.

Other reviewers have mentioned this but it's worth repeating: this was just so refreshing and different and weird (this time I mean that in a good way). My kudos to Peacock for taking a chance on something so different and kudos to the creators and writers for telling a story that was so engaging and unpredictable.

Did it all 100% make sense? Not really. But it wouldn't have been nearly so fun if it had.

Robots
(2023)

Enjoyable romantic comedy
After watching the trailer I expected to like this movie and it turned out to be pretty much exactly what I expected it to be. It's a straightforward story with plenty of laughs. The jokes mostly landed for me, even the silly ones, but that's going to vary from person to person. People are always so hard on comedies but I would take a bad comedy over a good drama most days. But I don't think this is a bad comedy, at worst it's average.

It's foremost a romance, so anyone not looking for a rom-com is watching the wrong movie. But it's a nice alternative to the Hallmark romances churned out by the dozen. Rom-coms involving a begrudging alliance between two people ill-suited to be together who eventually fall in love is one of my favorite tropes. It reminded me of Addicted to Love.

Animal Control
(2023)

Yes, it's worth checking out. A likable, funny show that I hope finds its audience.
I have really enjoyed the first two episodes. This is the first sitcom in a while that has made me interested in watching more and didn't make me cringe. If the whole season had been available, I probably would have binged it in one or two sittings. I find the characters really likable to watch and charismatic, and the burgeoning buddy cop relationship between Frank and Shred and the building romance between Emily and Shred are both appealing. I love animals, so it's fun to see the characters' encounters in their job. I'm looking forward to what else they will have to deal with.

Some of the jokes are a little predictable, but in a way that still makes me smile. At other times I found it genuinely quite funny, much more, again, than some of the other sitcoms that have premiered within the past couple of years.

I really hope this one survives.

Joel McHale seems to be reprising his character from Community, but that's perfectly fine with me. Vella Lovell's character, on the other hand, is a very pleasing divergence from her character on Mr. Mayor and she's really very likable in this.

The Santa Clauses
(2022)

Charming, a decent continuation of the movie series
I was naturally a little leery about this. A lot of remakes, reboots, and sequels that have come out recently have been garbage. And The Santa Clause has been one of my favorite Christmas movies since it came out. But I found it charming and I think it builds up to a good conclusion. If I had quit midway, I probably would have hated it. But I liked the way it ended.

It has a major retcon that I was unsure about at first, but now I like it. I also think it neglected Charlie and Lucy, and that didn't feel appropriate. Charlie really ought to be the successor Santa, when it's time. But it was great to see Bernard again. Betty and Noel were great additions, I really enjoyed their characters.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
(2022)

Much more enjoyable/entertaining than I was expecting. Visuals are incredible and well worth the watch.
I can only rate what I have seen so far. I would not be ready to give a thumbs up or thumbs down until I had seen the whole thing - all five seasons. But I did have something I wanted to say so I went ahead with a review.

Something very unfortunate happened with The Rings of Power: a lot of decisions were made along the way that positioned Tolkien fans against it. I was very skeptical about this show too, having been following people who have been pointing out red flags as the show was being made. Frankly, I didn't think it was possible for me to like this show after all the annoying things I had heard said about it by actors and creatives behind it. Not to mention having seen so many other franchises ruined in recent years.

I say it's unfortunate because I think the show's actually pretty good. Admittedly, I'm not a Tolkien scholar and I haven't read the source material (only LOTR and The Hobbit), so timeline and detail changes do not bother me. Female dwarfs without beards doesn't bother me (she actually does have one, though, there's just not much to it), and male elves with short hair is actually a plus for me. Though one thing that I still don't like is warrior Galadriel - Hollywood doesn't like gentle women. Galadriel was powerful and cool without a sword and I wish the show had honored that.

Even if it is not getting all the details exactly right, I don't think it is being disrespectful to Tolkien in spirit. Not so far, anyway.

I think a lot of people who had set themselves against this show would like it a lot more if marketing and such had been handled differently, if they had seen it in a vacuum. I don't blame the fans, I blame the production. They messed up, they poisoned the well. But I feel bad. Because I think the show deserves a fair chance. I would like to see it getting what it deserves. Each episode has left me excited for the next, and I haven't been feeling that with many shows lately.

Even if you're unhappy with the story, this show is such a visual feast that it is worth watching just for that. I think it looks amazing.

I thought it would be boring and the characters unlikable, agenda in every scene, but in my opinion that hasn't been the case at all.

Vengeance
(2022)

Surprisingly funny, surprisingly good, surprisingly surprising
-"This is the most wretched, godforsaken stretch of land on the face of the earth. And I'd never leave. You know what I mean?" -"Yeah. That's how I feel about Twitter."

I went into this movie not expecting a whole lot, though I liked the trailer, but I was really impressed. It did a few things that most movies don't accomplish: it made me think, it made me laugh, and it went in an unexpected direction.

B. J. Novak wrote this, and it shows he's not just a funny actor, but he's funny himself. I haven't done enough research to know whether it's fair to call this an independent film, but while it presents as an independent film, it's much funnier than they ever turn out to be. It's actually *funny*. What I really liked was that the movie continued to maintain humor throughout, minus a few climactic scenes towards the end, and was genuinely funny rather than just "offbeat". It reminded me of the humor you see in more mainstream comedies, or even good sitcoms.

-"MS-13? La Linea?" -"Yeah, I'm familiar with La Linea. They actually murdered 41 journalists last year." -"They've done bad things, too."

I think it's important to see it through to the end before you can fully appreciate its themes and messages, which I don't think it ever prioritized over making an entertaining movie. And while I can see how southerners might find it offensive, I think it shows that the condescending characters were the really the worst ones, and that they were full of hot air. I actually found this movie to be thought provoking, but without trying too hard.

The Phantom of the Open
(2021)

Funny and moving, very enjoyable with wide appeal
I cried through a big chunk of the second half of this movie but I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression, it remains lighthearted and uplifting. It just has a lot of...feeling.

At the heart of this movie is the question of whether or not it's worth it to follow your dreams, even if things don't go as well as you had hoped. I think it's a wonderful tale of finding meaning without finding conventional success.

Sally Hawkins and Mark Rylance are wonderful and their characters are so likable and heartwarming. Sometimes it's just really nice to watch movies about people you wish were your friends.

It's easy to recommend this. I think most people would find it an easy and enjoyable watch.

Johnny English Strikes Again
(2018)

Was surprised how much I laughed out loud
I just saw the first one and this sequel for the first time. I love silly/dumb comedies whose primary goal is just to make you laugh, and I'm not sure how they passed me by but they did. There's nothing brilliant here but I was surprised how much I actually laughed out loud during both of them. I think in a few years I could watch them both again and laugh just as much again.

God's Favorite Idiot
(2022)

Great characters
I am a fan of Melissa McCarthy and really enjoyed her in this. I also really enjoyed all of the supporting characters a lot. I thought they were all very original and wonderfully likable. I especially liked Tom ad his development. I wish they were my coworkers! I think that is the strength of the show, but I found it funny and uplifting as well. I consider my time to have been well-spent and I hope there is a second season.

I cannot believe how casually some reviewers will give something a "1". You've obviously never seen something truly bad if you think this deserves one star out of ten. Sometimes I think IMDB should just switch to a thumbs up or thumbs down system because of the insane way people rate. At least then you know when you look at the average score that it's not about how good it is, but about how many people liked it.

There's nothing wrong with being hit-or-miss on comedies, but please, have some perspective.

As a Christian, I had some issues with it, theologically-speaking, but it's a comedy and romance first and foremost, and I think it was well-intentioned and that is good enough for me.

The Northman
(2022)

Wasn't sure going in but I loved it
I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this movie. I liked The Witch but hated The Lighthouse. I liked the trailer for this but wasn't interested in 2 hours of ax battles. But I loved this. I was never bored and the promised visuals did not disappoint. A feast for the eyes but an emotional journey too. There's an image at the end that I found extremely moving.

The Bubble
(2022)

The distraction I needed
It feels like there is a lack of comedies recently - movies that set out to do nothing other than make you laugh. That was the goal here and I appreciate it. Karen Gillen is a charismatic lead rounded by a number of other familiar faces that it is a pleasure to see. This movie makes some strange choices, wastes some potential, and has a few jokes that crash rather than land but it was the distraction I needed. I liked it enough that I would probably watch it again at some point.

Hard Cell
(2022)

I've got a new business!
I have a lot of good things to say about this series. Most importantly, I thought it was entertaining and funny and above all refreshing. I would have enjoyed having more episodes (though I'm sure this was more than enough to wear out Catherine Tate) and I am excited for a potential second season. It's been a while since I enjoyed a comedy or a Netflix show this much. I am certain I will watch it again at some point.

I have mixed feelings about the ending but not enough to lower my rating. It would have been a good ending for a show that had been more serious all along but one thing I really liked about this series up to that point was that it never took itself seriously. There are a lot of good dramas out there, and a lot of good dramedies, but there are not a lot of good comedies that are pure laughs without intermixed serious moments so I was disappointed. But I still loved it overall and it certainly didn't ruin anything, especially not my anticipation for another season.

I also wanted to say that this series is a masterwork in elegance. No, hear me out. It has everything today's Hollywood loves - racial diversity, female main character leading a mainly female cast with lots of female friendship and females supporting females, social justice awareness, etc. - but is never annoying or preachy about it. It has heartbreaking moments, it has heartwarming moments, it deals with ugly truths, but it manages to be funny and entertaining and largely goofy throughout. I found it quite moving at times.

Hotel Portofino
(2022)

Lacking
Beautiful scenery and lots of potential in the characters and overall vibe but I felt like it was lacking something. A lot of the plots made me wonder why anyone would want to be watching something like this happen. A show is for entertainment, so shouldn't scenes be enjoyable to watch? It felt like jumping from one uncomfortable or unpleasant moment to the next.

Passage
(2008)

Some good footage but I do not recommend
I've read a few books about the Franklin Expedition and it was great to have some visuals and scenery shots to accompany the text. It was also interesting to learn more about John Rae and the difficult situation he faced taking what he had learned back to England. This documentary takes a novel approach in its form and I respect that. However, I did not enjoy it very much. I would find it hard to recommend.

Running Naked
(2020)

Great movie about friendship
Very touching movie about two people who became friends after going through cancer together as teens. They probably would not have been friends otherwise but were bonded deeply by the experience and remain very close as adults when they find themselves dealing with illness once more. I really enjoyed the characters, the friendship between the two men, and their love interests and those relationships as well. Great cast and performances.

I Want You Back
(2022)

One of the better romcoms to come out in the past few years
After learning about this movie I was looking forward to it. Two characters inadvertently falling in love while trying to attain others is always a solid premise - The Duff and Addicted To Love are two other examples coming quickly to mind. It did not disappoint. This movie could have used a bit more build-up of the new romance - which isn't to say it was unbelievable that they fell in love, just that a little more would have been nice. Jenny Slate and Charlie Day both bring their charm and comic timing and this was a fun time that I would definitely watch again sometime soon.

The King's Man
(2021)

Much better than the trailer led me to believe, more enjoyable than The Golden Circle
I was put off by the trailer. I thought this looked like the usual garbage being put out these days. But I was engaged the entire time, and I enjoyed it more than I enjoyed the second Kingsman movie. I really don't have any criticisms, I thought it was great.

Aziz Ansari: Nightclub Comedian
(2022)

Resonated with me
A short special, but great. Very intimate. A lot of serious points punctuated by jokes, a different vibe from a lot of stand-up. A lot of pandemic-related jokes, so I wouldn't blame anyone who wasn't interested in hearing more of that, but I thought it was very entertaining.

Out on a Limb
(1992)

Can't understand the low rating - very funny movie
I can't understand why this only has a 5.3. I was thoroughly amused and entertained, and was even laughing out loud for several seconds during a couple of parts. The movie is framed in a very interesting way with the younger sister telling the story to her class, some of whom critique it like film critics, which was so clever.

I actually would have liked the movie to be longer, so that some of the various situations could have played out fully, like the return of the wallet.

Mountain Men
(2014)

Family drama meets survival
This was more serious than what I thought I was in for. While I would have preferred something that was pure comedy with a bit of estranged brothers reconciling, this was a good movie that I thought handled mental illness in a very striking and interesting way. I was entertained and really liked the ending.

Mrs. Worthington's Party
(2007)

A strange little Christmas movie that I loved.
I saw this for the first time this year and it was one of the only new Christmas movies I saw this year, out of a good 20 or more, that I would watch again. It has a wonderful atmosphere and interesting characters and a romance that's nothing like the Hallmark ones we've seen a thousand times.

It might contain problematic elements for Catholics but this is definitely not an anti-Catholic film and I think faith in Christ is very much at the center of it.

Father Christmas Is Back
(2021)

I enjoyed it
There's nothing special here but I enjoyed this a lot more than most of the Christmas stuff I've watched so far this season. A crazy family and a Christmas where everything goes wrong? That's always fun and this was no exception.

A Boy Called Christmas
(2021)

Great visuals, not a lot of feeling
This film is not bad. It's very beautiful and competently made, with A-list actors in supporting roles to make you feel like it's a bigger event than it really is. Maggie Smith, of course, is the best part. I don't think most kids would enjoy it, there's just not enough comedy and a lot of it flies by too quickly for them, I would guess. I nanny for a seven year-old (about to turn eight) and this would not be his cup of tea. I would say it's better suited for adults.

I was mesmerized by the scenery, but the story lacks something.

Mostly I was offended as a Christian. Christmas is just some day when the elves decide for some reason to be extra happy, and no one else in the world has ever heard of Christmas? Totally "sanitized" of any religious notions or connections, not even a passing line. What Christian wouldn't be offended? You can a Christmas movie without mentioning Christ but you can't make a movie about the original of Christmas without mentioning Christ. Except you just did and now I'm mad.

And it tried to be like, "No, it's not just about the presents", but that was only an afterthought. It's about "hope", supposedly, but hope of what, exactly?

All that being said, it was OK. It had some very good things to look at, a couple of laughs, and a couple of fun moments. I loved the pixie.

The Lady Takes a Sailor
(1949)

Charming
I'm surprised at the rating and the reviews. I found this very amusing and charming. The romance was the highlight but the comedy wasn't bad at all. I will definitely be watching it again.

Muppets Haunted Mansion
(2021)

Only OK
I was looking forward to watching this. I love the Muppets and I was excited for something Halloween-y. But this was very forgettable and not something I would watch again. I gave it a six for Pepe, my fave, who was featured prominently.

It felt like it tried too hard to have a message but I didn't feel any heartwarming. Kermit sounded nothing like Kermit, this voice actor needs to be recast.
