Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
(2023)

OK, my kid had fun, but quit trying so hard.
I agree with others who say trim, trim, trim. Almost every act could have been cut by about two minutes. Sometimes a character can have TOO much personality; why bother with Helens card tricks? The unnecessary boyfriend? I have no problem with a strong resourceful female role, but felt like they were larding it on with her. It was nice to give the actors a chance to bow out of their roles, do some "bookending" with scenes. Mads did a good job in a role that could have been "just another crazy N@5i". I went on "five dollar day" at my theater, I think I paid about the right price. Fans will have fun.

Sisu
(2022)

Kellys Heroes Meets Nobody/John Wick
The short story here is don't mess with an angry Sammi. And don't be part of a group who killed his wife and burned his village down. Just get out of Finland and don't try to take his stuff. Don't shoot at his dog, don't kill his horse. The sheer guts of any man who would rather hang from a bullet wound on a piece of rebar to keep himself from being hung speaks to his determination to find you and kill you. By the way, about halfway through, I realized the two of the actors, the prospector and the German tank driver were the father and son in Rare Exports, another Finnish movie, I believe by the same production company. Its nice to see a father and son working together again.

The Outfit
(2022)

All the pieces come together.
GOOD movie! Rylance is excellent as Leonard, a "cutter" ("...not a tailor. A tailor sews buttons and hems.") who has to play one personality against another to save himself and his assistant from 1950s Chicago gangsters one long January night.

Only 8-10 people in the cast and the entire movie takes place in the three rooms of Leonards shop. The slightly claustrophobic setting adds to the suspense and tension.

Leonard construction of a suit throughout the film matches all the events and people that come together, like the suit at the end of the film.

Nikki Amuka-Bird has a wonderful scene excoriating a gangster for her hate of the gangs.

The Monolith Monsters
(1957)

Great little "monster" movie, a sleeper, but a nice change from the formula.
This is a really nice little movie for several reasons. Its not the traditional "monster" film, not some creature on the loose, more like an extra terrestrial natural disaster. There isnt one "hero" who does it all, but several people who contribute to solving the problem and at different levels, from how the monster develops, to curing people, to helping warn the citizens of the town. The vintage look is fun to look at too. How they did the SFX of the rock "growing" is good too, keep in mind a practical effect, not CGI. And, sorry, but, Lola Albright is immaculate in every scene she is in, perfect make-up and costume, not a hair out of place.

Raya and the Last Dragon
(2021)

Last Airbender with girl power.
This will be a fun movie for kids especially little girls. But after a few scenes, it started to feel like the original Last Airbender, down to the oversized helper animal/pet/transport. A cataclysm befalls a county, warring factions and one plucky teenager has to fix everything as she assembles a ragtag band of characters from each region that becomes a family. The lead makes most of the mistakes, and so has to fix things, but needs everyones help to do so. Good cultural references, good animation, the dragon is funny silly, noble sacrifice and my kid likes it. No big surprises but a standard good family film.

Hellboy
(2019)

Worth the third run price
I saw it at the "two dollar movie" theater in n my city, really $3.50 now, and Im glad I waited. Of course the trailers looked great, but.... It felt like they were trying to pack too much stuff into one film., so the story tended to wander- lets get Wild Hunt in, lets get Alice in, lets get Leopard man, Baba Yaga (which lead nowhere). The Hellboy makeup looked like it was melting into his chest and I get it they wanted a "different look" for the characters look, but looking like a mess didnt help. They try for an angle about " why cant the monsters have a life too" but the argument doesnt hold up when your dealing with things that feed on children's fingers and the marrow of humans. I know they wanted and edgier darker story, but showing people impaled and torn apart in full screen didnt add anything. I wish they could do a series of shorter films or a film of individual stories if they want to do another film, and we dont need to rehash the whole apocalypse angle- if we're going, we know his story.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
(2018)

Perfect, hits all the right buttons.
Absolutely spot on. Respects the history of the characters and story, but has a totally new fresh look. Visually amazing, its hard to absorb EVERYTHING that is going on on screen. I did have to go,out and make sure I wasnt in the 3D theater; some of the background items have a double outline that gave the impression of a 3D projection. I found out this was a production choice and I was in the right place. I think the way to tell a perfect melding of voice acting and production is when you look at the character onscreen and think "Wow, they're really giving a great performance" then realize, it's a cartoon, not a person in n the screen. You've been drawn in...they did their jobs well. Nice tributes to Ditko and Lee can be seen.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
(2018)

Fun to watch, but same old same old. No direct spoiler, but some plot points discussed.
I wont be naming any specific spoilers, but I will be writing about things in the movie, so be aware as you read. You can almost sit with your Spielberg movie checklist and fill it in with this one- sassy scientist, wimpy techie, anyone in a suit is bad, big game hunter helpers cant be trusted, soaring overhead scenic shots (two almost in a row at the front of the film), precocious spunky kid who knows dinos, timely dino saves when things look bad. On that last one, there needs to be a dino hybrid called the Deux Machinasaurus. With regard to the little kid, that tiny subplot (and, the character, sorry) could have be left out. She only seems to be there because Spielberg wants a kid in every film, whether they're needed or not. Visually, it is great, total eye candy. By now the CGI animals really do seem to have weight, total kudos to the people who do that work. Applause. Jeff Goldblum as the voice of reason in the before and after was a nice callback to the first movies. (C'mon, Jeff, open your shirt and pose on the table, just for fun) Parents, be aware, there is a very graphic scene on camera (but its a bad guy, so he deserves it) and a child is shown in danger several times. I also want to know how much that rich guy spent on his basement? That thing goes on 4ever!

Baywatch
(2017)

Easy fun summer movie. Go, enjoy
This was a lot of fun, some action, banter, romance and pretty people. Writing and actors are right on the line between parody and playing it straight. Some holler backs to the TV show. Parents be aware, LOTS of adult language, genitalia jokes and full frontal male nudity. The promos make the film look like a fun romp, but don't take young kids. (Had to have a talk with my kid about "it's a movie, we don't talk like that at home"). Good light summer fun, go enjoy, don't think too hard.

Power Rangers
(2017)

Good job, and I am NOT a fan.
I was not a fan of the original series and only went to take my son to it. It was great. Like I said, not a fan, the series missed my demographic when it came out but I knew the gist of it. The movie gives some back story as to how the Rangers came to Earth and also to the individual characters which gave the movie some heft. The Rangers alter egos have personality instead of the squeaky clean drones on the TV show. Also, hits all the buttons-training sequence, bonding scenes, slow mo hero walk (I think we get two). Brian Cranston has a good, almost cameo, essentially a face on a wall thru' the movie. Violent fights but no blood and the characters stop just short of vulgar language, had no problem letting my son watch. Only two gripes that suspension of belief can handle- 1)a being come from another galaxy and her name is Rita Repulsive? 2)a Ranger fights Rita in a bedroom at night, and no parents run into the room?

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
(2016)

Not great, but good, ignore the "critics" and go see it.
BvS did not disappoint. I guess everyone who panned it was upset that it wasn't 2.75 hours of two guys bashing it out, and are whining that they had to wait for the big duel. I could have done without some of the dream scenes, they tended to break the pace of the movie and I'm not a fan of this twitchy, spazzy "Lex" Luthor. Luthors motivation for hating Superman seems vague and muddled, but everything else felt pretty solid. The film is a mash up of Millers "Dark Knight" series and the "Doomsday" story arc from the Superman series. Enjoyed Jeremy Irons turn as Alfred, efficient but sarcastic (sardonic?)and I think Gal Gadot did just fine filling the Amazons bracelets. Just one complaint- could they juuuust put a laugh in once in awhile? Don't go all Marvel, but.... Also, were ALL the men required to to a scene with a 3 day stubble? Seems OK for kids 8 and up, but you know your kids better than I do. One curse word, but, IT WAS COMPLETELY CORRECT FOR THE CONTEXT AND I HAVE NO TROUBLE WITH IT. (I am also glad they took my suggestion (at least in my mind) and had Batman use and electronic voice changer, instead of having Affleck growl all his lines)

Spectre
(2015)

Don't look to close and you will enjoy yourself
I have heard of a "rule" in TV called the Bellisaurus Rule-"Don't look too close". Like most of the films we have seen in the this franchise if you don't sit around saying "How did they do that?" and "That's not how that would work" you will enjoy yourself with latest entry into the Bond series. Some times you wonder if the story can stand up to the stresses of improbability, but it's a good ride. Like a snake eating it's own tail or a walk along a mobius strip, we see how the villain in the earlier movies, and by this I mean from the '60s, became who he was by watching the modern character become who he is. Just go watch, you'll see what I mean. Lots of fighty-fighty and chasey-chasey, foreign locals and the latest tech to entertain. If you watch, and I'm sure I am not the first to say this, you get hints that maybe this time will be the last Bond film, at least for Daniel Craig. SPOILERS HERE His M is gone and in this film we even see the building where they worked destroyed. Q says "I thought you were gone", Bond drives off into the sunset in a familiar vehicle, Dr No theme up and out over credits...????? Too bad. I like Craig-good looking but still has a face that looks like it may have taken a few punches, looks like he could handle himself and a good actor for the role. One thing to look for, really can't put it in with the goofy stuff, but- In the scene in the old ministry building, there is a marble wall with the names of "the fallen". One of them is "Emma Pill"-a shout out to Mrs. Peel? I hope.

Supergirl
(2015)

Good start, but don't go so fast.
Possible spoilers, but the show has been out for a while now.Looks like it could be a fun show. They covered her background story well enough, sort of sticking to the canon. I know sometimes they have to bend things a bit when transitioning from one medium to another. I think its great that JAMES Olsen is now and ADULT and not just someone to put into jeopardy so he can be rescued. Also, the character is a good way to bridge Kara and her cousin. Coming up with her costume is good also, seems like they gave a nod to the changes the book character has gone thru. Although, where did they get and how can they afford any kind of material that is bulletproof. However, they tried to cram too much into the first episode. I think much of what they did could have been spread out over the next few episodes-her sister works for the government alien hunters, there are a bunch of super bad guys loose on earth, her aunt who looks just like her mom wants to kill her. These things could have been spread out, making the series more interesting, involving the viewer-"Hey, where do these super criminals keep coming from? Tune in next week and find out." Disappointed that head of the alien hunters is kind of a one-note guy. And, I realize Calista Flockhearts character isn't Perry White or J. Jonah, but is being a self absorbed puppy stomper the only way to present a strong female business person? If she is so sharp, why cant she remember the names of the staff she sees everyday? "Nooo, she's a contrast, a foil, for Karas character." I think if they can work around these issues we CBS could have a fun, quality adventure TV show.

Godzilla
(2014)

Fun and entertaining, don't think too hard about it, would like to see kenji sooner.
Took family to Godzilla this weekend, son liked it. I agree with a local radio guy who said it " was done the American way instead of the Japanese way" meaning the story followed the people not the kenji. I know you cant have a 90 minute kenji fight but PLEASE don't be coy about showing the big stars. Godzilla turns th corner, sees MUTO and then its on a TV screen. Using the TV switch is done a couple of time, not as much of an effect second time. Huge story machinations to get the kenji to America instead of Japan. Weapon options seem to be either .222 automatics or nuclear- is there nothing in between? Thought it was a cheap shot a couple of times when "things got quiet" and the directors had "cat jump out of the cupboard". Scenes done with train at tunnel in mountain pretty good. Extra credit for NOT changing the Big Guys roar. OK to take kids, no one is killed on screen, but monsters very real looking, discuss CGI w little kids before going.

Muppets Most Wanted
(2014)

This feels like they're just grinding it out.
I don't know, maybe they gave all the jokes away in the ads. Nothing seemed like a surprise, just felt like formula. Cameos/guest seemed just thrown on. It was like everyone wanted to get on the bandwagon and be in the movie, but they didn't contribute anything. Why was Tony Bennett stuck to the wall? No point to it. Ty Burrells scenes were the same joke about European work ethic. I kept trying to fall asleep so I wouldn't have to watch. Pacing of the movie seemed off. Back and forth between Kermits problem and Muppets tour was uneven, poorly pace. The moral lesson at the end was forced. And, I think Tina Fey is getting that loose skin under her chin women get.

The Nut Job
(2014)

NOT "Over the Hedge" quality
I took my son because he wanted to see it- he liked it, probably because it was primary colored images moving on the screen. I was waiting for a re-hash of 'Over the Hedge', but it was not up to that standard. Surly the squirrel is banished from the park by raccoon-we never know why and that may have helped give me some feeling for his character. Also, right from the start, you can tell Raccoon is up to something. Catherine Heigl as Andie(?) the female squirrel sounded like she was phoning it in. Where I kind of expected a little romance, there wasn't even friendship. The bad guy humans weren't even very engaging, either. I am not making a bad joke if I say they were two dimensional characters. Absolutely no surprises here, and nothing to engage you either. Go back and see Frozen instead. Wait, gotta give some credit to the level of CGI animation-textures were incredible. And that Lana,WOW, some dish.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
(2013)

Oh, please just finish it already!
Really feels like it was padded out so it could be a trilogy. Characters I don't recall showing up, CGI gets a little heavy handed with all the camera spinning during fights and falls, it gets to be kind of " look what we can to with the computer". This story could have been wrapped up with this film and I would have been OK with that. Now, seems like it will be more like a two-anda-third-logy, as I don't think there is much more left to the story- unless Jackson rewrites Tolkien, again. But, it kept my kid entertained for a couple of hours. Don't remember much act-ing, more like a bunch of act-ion. Didn't need the political infighting with the elves.

Walking with Dinosaurs 3D
(2013)

Studio couldn't decide which way to go
The overall story is one of a misfit runt overcoming obstacles as he grows up. We've seen the story before, nothing new. CGI is impressive and they even had enough sense to include footprints the dirt, so it seems more like the dinos are grounded, more real. It was hard to tell if the background was CGI or real life film w/ dinos added. The studio decided to frame the dino story with a modern day teenager not wanting to see his uncle in Alaska. Totally unnecessary, didn't need it, wasted time. Each time a new dinosaur entered the story, the movie did a freeze frame, the dinos name and an explanation of the name was give. Very disrupting. Then the dinos would use that name to refer to that dino-as if we would call each other Homo Sapien. A lot of the dialog was a bit too cute with references back to the modern world. I took my kid, he liked it, but that was probably because it was a movie about dinosaurs regardless of content. I found it mildly annoying. Strickly kids fare.
