Inside Out
(2015)

*sigh*
I was forced to watch this in rehab years back, Lord knows what they thought we would get out of it and I barely watched to be honest . But it's 8 years later so I thought I'd give it a proper try and I wish I hadn't. I realised why I zoned out of the film last time, it's proper depressing, the sadness character is so annoying and basically an idiot (not a fan of her character in The office either actually) and completely ruins everything for no apparent reason.

It looks amazing and the voice acting is really good as well and I love most of the cast, but honestly I've had to turn it off after 40 minutes, sadness is just so unlikable. I'm sure that's what they were going for but they didn't have to make her a saboteur for no reason other than being an idiot!

Robbie Williams
(2023)

Vale?
First off I've never been a huge fan of Robbie (I grew up a raver), I know the classics obviously. I did meet him though at a house party at ours when I was about 10, just when he left take that, me mum threw him out for being sick in the bath...

Anyway I digress, this is a really good account of his life and as someone who suffers from a plethora of mental illness it really hit home for me. Amazing how open he was and it was painful at times to see what he was clearly battling.

One thing massively annoyed me though:

There wasn't even a single mention of Port Vale (if you can't tell I support them) Robbie owns a load of stock and he's just became the club president, and it was a massive part of his childhood being in the railway paddock, he didn't even wear a Vale shirt man. This was an opportunity to get our name out there and get a bit of press from people who wouldn't know who we are and maybe get some much needed funding!!

(BTW that's how I met him, my step dad who got me supporting Vale was mates with a player at the time called Peter Swan and he was mates with Robbie, so yeah...)

At Home with the Furys
(2023)

Damn...
I've been a Fury fan for years, although the feeling has dropped off a bit since avoiding Usyk and fighting Del boy for the third effing time.

Now it's quite a good insight into the life of "The Fury's", but I just can not stand the format.

I hate reality television, but watched because it was Tyson.

But the talking heads every minute on about different things months apart while wearing the same clothes just reminds you how fake reality TV is.

I still like Tyson as I suffer from a plethora of mental health issues also, but to be someone who says he doesn't care about money and then does this programme and the Ngannou JOKE of a "fight" is clearly full of BS!

White Men Can't Jump
(2023)

Meh..
If you've seen the original, seriously, don't waste your time. It doesn't come close!

The best thing about this was Andrew Schulz and a few of the jokes scattered throughout the film.

To be honest this misses the mark and is just an average film, I know they had to change it up compared to the original, modernise it etcetera and they did that well, although in an annoying way, in my opinion, but I'm old enough to remember the original lol...

Which is a classic and still stands up today, there was no reason for a remake. This is just an average streaming film about basketball.

I'm trying to be vague here to avoid spoilers, but it feels like there's none of the ICONIC moments from the original, a lot of content and story missed out. It doesn't even feel like it's about the 2 of them, one is an extra in the others story and now the title doesn't even make sense...

Some okay acting performances and some of the soundtrack was alright I have to admit, but other than that nothing stands out.

The original is streaming for free as well, personally I feel like I've wasted an hour and a half odd, when I could have just watched the original, but I had to find out for myself since I'm a huge Schulz fan and he's mentioned it on Flagrant.

5/10 bang average streaming film, the funny moments saved it from being lower than that!

Kingsman: The Secret Service
(2014)

Wow...
Just want to start off by saying I don't like action films (besides a select few from back in the day) and I can't usually stand spy films. I've never seen a full James Bond movie, I fell asleep half way through Goldeneye on Christmas day, that's it!

BUT I LOVED THIS!! It was funny, edgey, bit of bad language which is how people actually talk, it has an AMAZING cast, (who thought Eddie the eagle & Elton John was such a good looking lad as well lol) the fighting scenes had me engrossed and the story was actually pretty damn good, it wasn't your regular villain, it was a heel with a purpose, which is always better. I don't think I looked at my phone once.

I can't recommend this enough, even if like me you don't usually go in for these kinds of films.

Avatar: The Way of Water
(2022)

Well..
**************Very minor spoilers nothing to do with the story*********** * * * * First things first. I have to say this is visually stunning, like blew my mind stunning. What they've achieved here is truly astonishing.

Now I didn't realise that this was the second in a string of films, so I was a little bit let down by the ending, nothing terrible, just that it's very much a "To be continued" finish.

Now I'd heard stuff about the story, but I didn't read to much into it as I didn't want any spoilers.

But to me this very much felt almost like a rinse and repeat of the first film but around water.

Now obviously Jake and his missus aren't the leads this time, so it was nice for the kids to be the main focus and the introduction of the Tulkun (only remembered that name because I'm watching the extra features as I type and someone just mentioned it lol) was good too.

But again it felt like everything was borrowed from the first film, everything they said about the tree in the first is now about water, the bond with the flying animals are now with the Tulkun.

One thing I will say about the story is personally I could predict everything that was going to happen 5-10 minutes (sometimes more) before it would happen, it's very simple (although there is another load of names to try and remember) and like I said it follows the same formula as the first film pretty much.

I do think this is a film you HAVE to see though, the visuals truly are groundbreaking, it's a land mark moment (kind of like the first) and I think if you have kids they will love it and to be fair I did like it, but I think when all of the films are out it should be judged as a single entity.

Because this will just be a small chapter in the quest to get inside Pandora's box and we need to buy her a few more drinks before we close the deal! ;)

The Cloverfield Paradox
(2018)

A damn decent sci-fi
I really enjoyed it, so I really don't get the hate.

I genuinely think it's a pretty good space flick, it may just be the fact that is has the word "Cloverfield" in it or that it is attached to that universe as to why it gets so much hate.

Pretty freaky, I wouldn't say scary, maybe 1 or 2 jump scares, even a few laugh out loud moments 'cause of your man from the 'I. T crowd' and it looks brilliant, great effects and visuals I have to say.

There's a lot of grey areas with the characters, the heels aren't even full on heels, which is what I like. It also has a feel good feel to it, or does it? You'll have to find out...

To me it felt a lot like Cube/Cube 2 (first one is defo worth a watch BTW) as I just kept waiting for the next weird and crazy thing to happen and wasn't disappointed.

Honestly don't be put off by the reviews or score I honestly think if this was called something different it wouldn't catch all the hate.

It's an better than an above average sci-fi film, it's a good sci-fi film. Gutted we haven't seen some sort of equal or another installment in the CCU.

So anyway, give it a try for yourself, you've already got the streaming service, so it's free, may as well!

Alan Partridge Live: Stratagem
(2022)

"This country..."
First off I can't believe the reviews people have left on here, I don't know if there's an agenda to get Coogan or something but they claim to be fans and that this was terrible and it just wasn't. One person even said that he needed his writers to help him, it literally says on the first credits scene that Neil Gibbons and Rob Gibbons were also writers, that's who he always works with nowadays.

Now is this 'The man who thinks he's it'? No, but I don't think any character comedy stand up has ever come close to that, it's a master piece. But is this good, yes 100% it is!

Tbh it's just nice to get some new Partridge/Coogan, bit annoyed that it wasn't advertised, the amount of Partridge I've watched on Prime/Britbox and paid for I thought it would have been recommended all over the shop, but it was by complete accident that I found it and I'm so glad that I did.

Ignore the hate on this, it's funny and it's new and it fits in with new era Partridge (This time, Partrimilgrimage etc). It does get a bit silly, but it's a big venue and he's got to play it to the back row as he's not on a big screen.

There's a few genuinely classic moments, I don't want to give away any spoilers, but an old friend comes about and makes Alan look a proper eejit.

There really is some moments that will go down as classic Partridge and some that missed the mark a bit. But it is in no way a bad watch, if you like Alan get it watched straight away!

Edit: One take away thought I had is that I don't think Partridge should be doing a live show for an hour and a half, on all the other live things he's just the main event act, but here he's the whole thing and I don't think any characters should be on stage for that long.

Some new Paul Calf or even bringing Cheeseman back could have helped this out.

Yes I know there were guests, but there could have been more. Just an edit I had to add.

Hunters
(2020)

Okay you ruined it...
MAJOR SPOILERS * * * * Reviewing the first series before I try the second because I got so p***** off with the last episode. So this won't be my most articulate or in depth review as atm I'm just angry that I feel I've wasted 11 odd hours of my life!

The first 2 episodes were great and it was okay until near the end of the series when it got really good and then the 11th episode totally messed it all up.

I didn't mind Eva Braun and Hitler being revealed, I actually thought that was quite obvious but still a good plot twist.

But the whole Meyer is actually the wolf and all that stuff was utterly stupid all that hard work completely undone for some stupid plot twist that makes no sense Whatsoever, I'm guessing his death was also so Pacino didn't have to film series 2, but I'm pretty sure he's In the advertisements, so that probably means more F-ing flashbacks!

Really enjoyed it but just watch it until they blow up the building and crash off the bridge and imagine it finishes there, because honestly you'll just end up being as annoyed as me!

Inside No. 9: The Bones of St Nicholas
(2022)
Episode 1, Season 8

Loved it...
Been waiting for this since it was announced and I managed to get my (6th maybe 7th) re-watch through of every episode finished yesterday (22/12/22) and watched on iplayer as soon as it dropped.

Genuinely loved it, great twist, great acting, great guest stars and everything looked amazing as it always does.

I will say, I called the twist quite early on, but I'm an Inside no 9 (and everything Stephen and Reece have done) addict, so I was bound to get one right sooner or later lol.

I've already watched the new episode 3 times.

Once for the story, second to try and spot hints for the twist and third to try and spot the golden hare... Yes I am that sad, but I don't care I love this show lol.

So if you're reading this wondering whether you should give it a watch (that's what reviews are for, if you're going to tell everyone the plot of something then write it as a synopsis!!!! Sorry when people do that it really winds me up) YOU SHOULD! Whether you're a seasoned in9 viewer or coming to this episode as a newbie, you should get it watched.

If you are a newbie and this is your first episode, I implore you to go back and watch from the start after this episode, you'll love it!

Also, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Mammals
(2022)

We 'ate Stoke, we' ate Stoke
Sorry, the Tom Jones cameo set me off (he sings Stoke's song and I'm a Vale fan).

Ignore the reviews, honestly it's just people who don't like Corden with a passion, which I don't really get tbh.

I'm not a fan of him nowadays either, I loved Gavin & Stacey and remember he's acted in a load of things back in the day, people seem to forget he was an actor and writer first, so I can't see how they can say his acting is bad.

But he's basically become a plastic yank and a caricature of an English bloke at the same time which is why I'm not a fan. I also think a lot of people don't like his political views (I don't know what they are) since a reviewer on here called him Corbyn...

Anyway back to the review; Genuinely this is pretty good, there is a few laughs and there's some proper drama and I think anyone who's in a relationship really should watch, no spoilers but honestly it will make you think and be warned it gets a bit dark and affected me in a visceral way due to past relationships.

It's filmed well, there's a good supporting cast and I prefer Corden as an actor than a telly host 100% and I think he did an above average performance in this. But there is always the essence of Smithy in there, I have to admit.

If the first episode doesn't grip you then don't bother, but I can almost guarantee it will.

Ignore the troll hate and make your own mind up, but at least give it a go.

7/10.

Peacemaker
(2022)

I'm expecting some down votes, sorry...
I'll get on to why I expect a large portion of you to get angry at me in a moment....

First off I love this and I'm really not a fan of comic books or super hero stuff, only thing I like is dead pool, The Boys and Guardians. I've never seen a Superman film and never read a comic in my life, besides The Beano!

The Marvel stuff is a little too cookie cutter, Disney (yes I know Disney own it) fairy tale type thing. Where as Dead Pool is funny as Eff and The Boys is my favourite show atm because it feels like what it would genuinely be like with Supes, anyway I digress...

Now I am a fan of John Cena, he's the only reason I wanted to see this (there is a lot of caveits to that though, to do with wrestling and super Cena, 5 moves of doom booking, but I won't get into that) so I Watched The Suicide Squad before starting this and I thought it was okay, had some funny parts but I'm glad I did, so I would advise doing that before starting this.

Honestly if you don't mind the language and the gore and if you like superhero comic book stuff then you'll like it or if you're like me and you don't you still will.

It's funny, it's got action, intrigue, characters, heels and faces and the grey in between, it's just down right entertaining, I can strongly recommend you to give this a try.

This isn't a superhero movie for the kids though, unless you want them to start talking like Jim Jefferies lol.

NOW THE HATE, I was born in the 80s to a raver Mother and I was brought up listening to that music and going to raves not concerts. So the constant hair band songs annoyed me a bit, just because it's not my type of thing though, besides jazz it's probably my least favourite genre. But I know some people will vote this down just because I was brought up raving rather than rocking, but each to their own I say...

Anyway, can't wait for series 2!!! Although it's a bit of a pain to watch here in England, but I have my ways, God bless free trials and binge watching...

8.5/10.

The Devil's Hour
(2022)

I called it.
*****************Spoilers ahead********************

For anyone else that suffers from temporal lobe epilepsy will find this whole thing very familiar (if you've never heard of it look it up, it's a nightmare and can lead on to serious mental health issues, like myself). I even have my own version of the Grandmother's button, not an item but I put my thumb in between my middle and ring finger so I can remind myself that I'm actually real, weird I know right...

Anyway...

By the second episode I had guessed it was a life is a loop type thing since it was all deja vu and seeing glimpses of the future and then a few comments and things later in the show ("Find a way to kill myself" "I've never killed you before" and quite a few others confirmed it and well the of course the last episode lol. I'm sure many other people called it as well, just wanted to get it on record lol.

Right the actual review part: I really enjoyed this, I've just done all 6 hours in one go, so that shows it's pretty damn good.

Great twist and cliffhangers, so If you like programmes like that then defo give this a watch. And if you like gritty British drama then this is another one for you.

But I will say stick with it until the end, even if its just to confirm your suspicion on the twist, it's well worth it.

Only a few complaints.

1: Some of the ADR was really off 2: Some of the acting by some minor characters was quite laughable to be honest.

3: Peter Capaldi wasn't in it nearly enough Besides these few niggles this really is a cracking show

8/10.

The Peripheral
(2022)

Great so far!
Literally just finished the first 2 episodes and it's quarter to six odd in the morning here in England and I have to say I loved it, well worth staying up for.

Chloe grace Moretz was brilliant, just like she is in most things.

Some other really good actors in this as well, especially Burton obviously (not going to lie, I don't know all their names yet) but good performances all round if I'm honest. CGI is brilliant too, so much so I got seriously freaked out (The eyeball) .

Good story and premise so far and I haven't read the book and I don't read forums about shows I'm watching, so no spoilers for me lol!

And if you're like me and want escapism from a show, like any successful show of the past 10 years has been, then this will work a treat!

I know it's only 2 episodes, so my review might change come the end of the series, but if you like Westworld you'll like this too (yes it's made by the same person, or something along those lines, not 100% sure) actually if you like sci-fi at all; this is worth watching.

Will definitely be carrying on with this!

8/10 so far but like I say that could change by the end of the series up or down...and I'm thinking up!

The Wilds
(2020)

Stopped 10 mins in to series 2
It was a 7

*************************** WARNING SPOILERS ON THE FIRST LINE********************************

Now there are a few things wrong with this show, a few loose plots, the sometimes dodgy writing, the fact that the writers think every female has been abused or is a lesbian in the closet and the whole feminist agenda; I genuinely didn't mind, (and I'm a bloke) but for me, it made Gretchin (the woman behind the torture) even MORE of a heel, because she was banging on about it ALL the time, pretty much every time she was on screen.

It was very much "Go away heat" and not "I want to boo you" heat.

Sorry for the Wrestling terminology.

Basically I didn't hate her like Ramsey Bolton from Game of Thrones (now that's a proper TV villain), everytime she was on screen, I tended to pick up my phone and zone out if I'm honest...

My main reason for my negativity is they left so much unresolved at the end of the first series and now they've introduced all the lads, I was genuinely thinking of fast forwarding all the lad bits so I can finally get the answers to the many cliffhangers they left us on!

Besides those few things I mentioned, series 1 was damn good, like I say a 7 maybe 8/10. But I can't forgive that many new characters coming in and taking up half the time.

Imagine the Office (SPOILER) and then in series 3 when Jim goes to Stamford and instead of a couple of minor characters with minimal air time they introduce an entirely new full cast that are going to be on screen as much as the originals and will also steal screen time from the people you've just made connections with and have your favourites and you feel like you know them etc from the past 10 odd hours of telly.

In my opinion they should of had 14/15 episodes in the first series and finish it off properly and THEN introduce then lads for series 2.

By all means start watching and see if it's for you, it's an Amazon original so it will always be free on Prime, but just be warned of what I've said...

Now I might go back to watch the second series at some point and if they pull it off then I will happily change my score accordingly and add an edit at the bottom, but just seen an advert for that Josh Brolin thing on Prime so going to give that a try first...

Atm 5/10.

The Intern
(2015)

Shocked that I liked it
This really isn't usual thing, I mean so far from what I'd usually watch, but it's De Niro so I had to give it a try... And I loved it!

It was so heartwarming and feelgood, which is exactly what I need right now (my best mate passed away last night at 41).

De Niro is brilliant in this, the man really can play any character, I still think he's the number one actor in the world, (closely followed by Di Caprio) and Anne Hathaway was brilliant as well, she played the stuffy boss to a tee.

I don't like giving spoilers or passing off a synopsis as a review (which so many people on here do) but if you want a good, wholesome, sometimes funny and just overall nice 2 hours then definitely give this a watch, you might even shed a tear, but you'll come away feeling better for it.

Crack open a bevvy or a bottle of wine and enjoy, it's free on Prime right now...

8/10.

The Grand Tour: The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick
(2022)
Episode 1, Season 5

A return to form...
A major return to form from the lads.

Now don't get me wrong the episodes in lock down weren't bad or anything but they didn't feel up to scratch, but they did the best they could considering the situation.

The very fact this episode almost starts with a very big bang concerning James May (no spoilers) makes this episode must see "T. V".

You can pretty much tell that Jeremy, James and Richard have been gagging to head abroad and do one of their usual epics and this one definitely delivered!

So any of you checking the reviews to see if you should get back to watching 'The Grand Tour' if you've dropped off after the pandemic episodes (well that's what reviews are for, to see if you want to watch something) YOU DEFINATLY NEED TO!

And with another episode dropping soon (Portugal if I remember correctly) I have a feeling they will keep this amazing quality.

Get Smart
(2008)

7.5/10
I never saw the original show just to clarify as well, which is the reason this hasn't scored a bit higher, people who hate the fact the original got a remake.

Im not a fan of spy films, I've literally managed to get through half a James Bond film on Christmas day and had to turn it off.

This is very different however.

Now I'm a big Steve Carell fan (I genuinely think the American Office is the only good American import of a British comedy and the majority of that is because of Steve Carell) and he really can play the role of a spy who is very intelligent on the profession but is still a clutz very well.

This is genuinely funny, and pretty much everyone is cast perfectly, The Rock as Agent 23 is a perfect example.

I did think that the bloke who plays Packer in the American Office was cast wrong at first, but as the film went on he proved to be a bit of an eejit so it worked out well.

And Anne Hathaway as a gorgeous assassin obviously fits very well. Her and Carell have great chemistry as well which is always good as without it "Buddy cop" or duos in general fall flat on their face.

Defo worth a watch of you want a laugh and a bit of family fun, blokes and lasses and teens and young ens a like will enjoy it.

7.5/10.

The Boys
(2019)

I can't stand comicbooks/superheroes...
I can't stand Marvel and DC and all the comic book stuff, (Deadpool and Guardians I will watch) BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT!

Imagine a superhero world that was real, none of this nicey nicey holier than thou rubbish, where the only person doing anything wrong is some crazy genius super villain (for those that have seen it, I meant to put that lol), it's what humans are like, with all their neurosis, prejudices and proclivities but with powers.

Honestly I didn't think I was going to like it until the scene where we met A-Train (no spoilers) but I ended up binge watching it ALL over a lazy weekend with a few bevvys and I can honestly say....

Thia is one of the best shows around, best show since Game of Thrones.

You'll love characters, then hate them and the opposite, there's all the grey area that is needed with character development.

Plus the fact it looks brilliant, the effects are stunning. Welll directed, well filmed, honestly the DOP on this needs some recognition...

So if you don't like super hero stuff (especially the happy Disney ending type stuff) then this is for you and if you do like super hero stuff you'll still like it, I couldn't recommend this more!

10/10.

The Underground Railroad
(2021)

Why haven't more people seen this?
I'm only episode 3 but this is pretty damn good telly!

I will admit it gets confusing at times and you have to wait for an explanation it it's worked out so far.

Very harrowing and yes I'm English and mixed race but I do have a morbid curiosity with the American slave times and this puts a new spin on it.

I found this after I finished the 2016 version of roots (it was recommended) and I would tell anyone that wants to get immersed in an awful tale with plenty of almost sci-fi twists, you need to give this a watch.

Idid have a bit of a problem with the main fella though, I didn't find myself sympathising with him, the lass I really did. But like I say episode 3 down let's see what happens.

Also just to add what's up with Homer? Is he actually a nipper or does does he have that thing the lad from different strokes had? Either way he's a cracking little actor!

Edit : Sorry I've had to knock this down a rating to 6/10 because of the ending (no spoilers)and as this is a miniseries so there won't be a second series which is a big disappointment.

If they do make more then I will re-edit and re-rate it.

Roots
(2016)

Just brilliant!
I'd always heard about the original but never watched it and just spotted this version on Prime.

As an Englishman I kind of have a morbid curiosity about the American slave times as it doesn't get taught over here in schools.

This really is touching and genuinely amazing, I highly recommend whatching it if you get chance.

I have to admit as a straight bloke and a mixed race salesman, I think I have a man-crush on 'Chicken George' lol. Charismatic doesn't even start to describe him, I don't know if it's the writing or the actor but he really is a pleasure to watch.

9.2/10 .............................................................

Only Fools and Horses
(1981)

Still stands up today...
Just got myself Britbox, so I've done a full watch through with all the Christmas specials during the series and the ones after.

Just some advice if you're going to watch on Britbox after every series you need to search for the Christmas special for whatever year that series was separately (I had the episode guide open on wiki to make sure I got it all in the right order).

It's been a breath of fresh air, there's no sitcom with an audience, English or American that I can bare to watch nowadays, they're all terrible tbh.

True if you're overly sensitive and don't realise the earlier series were made in a different time you might get offended by a few words or subject matters. But it's so worth watching if you've never seen it, especially from start to finish.

The original last episodes (1996) were genius and personally I wish they didn't come back for the 2000's episodes, but they're by no means bad, they just don't live up to the usual standard.

You'll fall in love with the characters and want them to succeed no matter what trouble they get in to.

Definitely Britain's best ever sitcom!

Total Recall
(2012)

Chase, action, exposition...
I know that's the formula for most action films, but tbh I very rarely like or watch action films. I wantched this because I love the original.

If you're a fan of the Arnie one, honestly DO NOT WATCH, if you've never seen the original then you might like it, if you're into mindless, uncharming action flicks.

The story changes didn't do it for me at all either tbh, don't get me wrong the acting was good and it looks brilliant, some of the cgi is really good, but I found it mind numbingly tedious in all honesty.

But if you're reading reviews to see if you want to watch this; then see my earlier statement.

The Voices
(2014)

I'm a bit confused tbh...
The film doesn't know what it is, well it kind of does, it's an amalgamation of a lot of genres. It does have it's funny parts (Mainly the cat) and some amazingly dark parts.

Ryan Reynolds is brilliant as always.

As a sufferer of a plethora of mental health issues I do actually feel a slight kinship with the main character, I'm not sure if that's a good thing though lol.

If you're a fan of Reynolds, then give it a watch, if you like messed up gory comedy with a head case twist then give it a watch and if you're a dribbler like me then be warned that mental health plays a big part, luckily I could handle it but I do know some people who would be "set off" by this film.

If none of the above apply then maybe give it a miss or you might just find yourself freaked out and very confused...

Drunk History: UK
(2015)

Very hit and miss...
It completely depends on the comedians telling the stories. One episode could be really funny or have someone get proper bladderd and it's brilliant.

But sometimes I don't even know who they are and sometimes they don't really get into the spirit of the show. Just keep that in mind if you start watching.

It's on Britbox atm so if you already have a subscription it's worth giving a go, but it might be worth cherry picking the episodes with comedians you know and like.

See all reviews
