Frasier
(2023)

What are they doing?
Look, there's Kelsey Grammer. And he's effortlessly Frasier Craning like no time has passed. That's impressive.

...but who are these other people? And what on earth are they doing? The people credited as "writers" here are anything but? What a bunch of amateurs and nobodies, devoid of talent or skill.

The actors aren't any better. These are the absolute cheapest, bottom-rung F-list actors you can possibly get, if indeed "actors" is what they call themselves. They get to deliver their lines in monotone indifference standing next to Kelsey Grammer, and then trip over their own feet while slapping themselves in the face with a pie.

The highpoint and ultimate embarrassment of their brief and improvised careers.

It's worse than a parody. Worse than satire.

There is quite a lot of awful tripe in Kelsey "The Rumble" Grammer's work the last decades.

A triumphant return to the glory days- this isn't.

Return Frasier to the dead. And let him eternally lie, for god's sake.

Babylon 5: The Road Home
(2023)

An amateurish romp, kicking over everything B5 was.
Not well thought through. Packed with inconsistencies.

Taking a Babcom-link off the station, when he's leaving for good? A power station running on tachyons? WHAT?

Epsilon III turrets talking like goofy Star Wars droids?

Bringing up quantum physics again and again like it's a magic formula, or spell? To dispel plot holes, I guess.

Any moment of seriousness waved off with a dumb, jokey comment- Marvel style. Lyta Alexander being the worst case here.

Cheap, uninspired animation. A Starfury grappling a shadow vessel and beating it against Babylon 5? Instead of shooting it when it directly in front? Some kind of ridiculous caricature, this.

Another beloved franchise disgraced just for the brand recognition. Such an awful waste. If Straczynski really wrote this, I hope Babylon 5 never ever returns in live-action.

Sisu
(2022)

Classic genre film
It's over the top, but not to the ridiculous degree.

It's not even slightly comedic, but there's plenty of scenes to make you laugh anyway.

Just the right amount of blood and guts, and make-up sfx are pretty good too.

The CGI is used only when it needs to be, and isn't distracting at all.

This is just a whole lot of movie for the budget.

The only niggle is that 90% of the Germans don't even look slightly German ;)

Frankly, this is closer to genuine grindhouse than what Tarantino and Rodriguez did a few years back.

Big fat western font and guitar twang. Old school scratches and film grain used sparingly. They knew exactly what kind of movie they were making.

Big recommend.

Plane
(2023)

Butler rarely disappoints.
Another good action flick from Butler.

It has all the things it needs to have for action, with all the fat trimmed (pun intended).

The title fits; it is a lean plot and wastes absolutely no time. It doesn't have the budget of a Has Fallen, but it doesn't really need it. The only strange thing about it is that it's set in the Philippines, but isn't shot there. Shooting cheap action in the Philippines is an old time honored tradition.

But anyway, decent CGI, tense shootouts, Rambo-style throat-cuts and Barrett 50cal juice machine.

If you enjoy other Gerard Butler action films, you already know what you're in for.

Slow Horses
(2022)

Slow writers for slow horses
First off, the show is worth watching for Oldman's performance, rolling through muck like like a filthy diamond.

But be prepared for annoyances. The plots are painfully predictable, as the writers can't concoct convincing agents. These agents constantly make wrong decisions and stupid mistakes, excused away by those agents being screw ups.

Doesn't stop them from behaving like they were competent, entitled and arrogant however.

...and would MI5 really hire, as field agent, a woman with nubbins instead of fingers? Or is that a diversity hire requirement from the producer, the same way Amazon conduct their business?

The Gray Man
(2022)

Sub mediocre
The story is full of holes.

The fight scenes are dark and simplistic.

Shootouts are wide and cheap, a safe distance from any big booms.

Characters are extreme clichés, with goofy banter and flat nonmedy jokes.

Buzzwords thrown in for good measure.

Even the ending is unsatisfactory.

I refuse to believe thus thing cost 200m. Where in the world did that money go?

It doesn't have the efficiency of Bourne.

It doesn't have the style of Bond.

It doesn't have the adrenaline of Wick.

What it does have is a Marvel-feel.

If you're into that, I guess you're into that.

Ad Astra
(2019)

Slow, but very pretty meandering.
Some scenes straight out of 2001, the intro from Gravity, some cinematography and sets from Sunshine, story beats from Apocalypse Now set to the pace and sentimentality of Solaris.

Some people behave in human-like fashion, but the science completely breaks down in several places.

So it's a bit of a mess, but a very pretty mess.

It's not really a BAD movie, but I'll likely never watch it again.

The Norwegian space craft made me smile, though.

The Sopranos: Proshai, Livushka
(2001)
Episode 2, Season 3

The only bad episode of the show?
This one is off. With the death of the actor playing Livia, this whole episode feels slapped together, or hastily converted. The last conversation with her and Anthony suffers from poor CGI, lines cut from previous episodes and awkward reactions. Strange looping in other scenes.

The whole funeral is a cringe fest, barely saved by great performances by Carmela and her father.

I see how they try to emphasise the trajectory for Janice, but oh boy could it have been done differently.

A black spot on an otherwise impeccable series.

Daredevil
(2015)

Massive disappointment
After a decent first season, and an awesome second one, this show has plummeted to the very bottom. Season 3 is as much a chore to suffer through as the new Jessica Jones season. Even Vincent's usual fantastic performance can't save this. The characters have reached a new pathetic low, and are in fierce competition with each other for greatest guilt or being the biggest screw-up. Matt's visions, pointless flashbacks and the "mother" plot point does nothing but take up time apart from adding even more self pity and guilt. Fingers crossed the show is cancelled after this.

Norm Macdonald Has a Show
(2018)

Adam Eget?
More like Regret!

Nah, he's a good guy...

Here's hoping for a minimum of ten seasons of Norm's show. And may he be increasingly well paid.

Slender Man
(2018)

Maybe 1/3rd of a film
When you decide to make a horror film, actually produce said horror film... it makes no sense to then chicken out and CUT all the horror from the film and release what is left. Anything spooky is gone. All the violence is gone. Entire characters are removed from the film (because they die, obviously, sad-face). Sony has gone and done a massive goof again, accelerating their decent down the drain. Avoid this film like the plague.

Westworld
(2016)

The higher they are...
The first season of Westworld was a joy to watch. Impeccable effects, interesting writing, some food for thought and mostly capable actors with a few professionals carrying more than their weight. Even a Shyamalan twist at the end. It earned a rightful place among the TV best, up there with Deadwood, Sopranos, Rome, Band of Brothers etc. And as it turns out, that is where they should have left it.

The second season was an absolute bore. The human characters have no real drive anymore, they're just going through the motions. Treading water. The "hosts" are now either pathetic cannon-fodder or superhuman fanatics. Who gets shot, who shoots who, it has lost all meaning. If it turns out that they're needed somewhere in the plot they're just resurrected. All impact is lost. The Man In Black was supposed to have gotten what he wanted in this season: a place where choices are final, consequences are dire and there are no do-overs. Watching the series, I feel like that is exactly what is still missing.

It was also painfully obvious that only the female characters have any real goals. Dolores, Maeve, Elsie, Charlotte are all leads dragging various men with them as servants or hostages. Even The Man's daughter Emily appears out of nowhere in particular to drag him around by the nose. This pandering to the current social trend will get you no plus points. Women are able to figure out what purpose and agency are without having it spoon-fed to them by a woman-heavy cast & crew. Pretty sad.

In short, the first season is fantastic and a pleasure to watch. The second season you'd be better off giving a miss.

Explained
(2018)

Not the place to find any objectivity
Here you will find the scientific cardinal sin of arriving at a conclusion first, and then distort or cherrypick facts to support your conclusion. This series is one that explain according to Vox. For scientific consensus or objectivity you should look elsewhere. For a peek at ideological distortion, enjoy.

The Void
(2016)

Carpenter fans will love this one!
Nothing short of classic horror film-making here. It could have neatly fit into John Carpenter's apocalyptic films, specifically Prince of Darkness to which it seems a spiritual sequel of sorts. It kicks off a disturbing scenario from the first minute and plummets straight into nightmarish soon enough. I haven't seen this kind of enjoyable and well made practical effects since the 80's The Thing, or perhaps as late as Species. No glaring and cheesy CGI is to be seen. What there is of CGI budget is all splurged on gorgeous otherwordly scenes. The main set has the lovely dichotomy you would find in a classy Silent Hill hospital, with juicy decorations from Clive Barker's Hellraiser. The people who made this clearly knew what they were doing.

Tired of teen splatter films? Seen one ghost movie too many? Do jumpscares make you groan and roll your eyes? Try this. You won't be disappointed.

Frontier
(2016)

Going nowhere fast
This show is impressively simple. The overall setting surrounding the main plot could have made for some very interesting, informative and vicious entertainment. Instead, it appears to be absolutely boiled down to it's simplest possible parts.

Scriptwise, it is almost like "how not to" tutorial for new writers. The main plot, which is supposed to be the focus lies vaguely in the background. Several minor and ultimately meaningless and uninteresting subplots are forced in for intrigue. Four or five different factions all have several subordinate characters with their separate alliances which intermingle to farcical proportions. It is obviously meant to increase depth and drama for all the characters but in a transparently shallow and meaningless way.

Character interactions are not believable and the characters themselves are extremely stereotypical. All the male characters have grossly primitive motivations and actions, and nearly all female characters are strong independent agents to a historically anachronistic and revisionist degree.

The only group that has anything close to a serious treatment is the native tribe. The matriarch and lead warrior of the tribe have predictable but fair parts. Jason Momoa repeats his character from Game of Thrones and does it well as far as that goes. Landon Liboiron's part is nothing more than a Watson, slipping effortlessly around to explain and elaborate for the viewer, unnecessarily so. The whole thing would have been better suited as a film when the padding and filler stand out so painfully obvious.
