Split
(2016)

-spoiler alert- can believe they give almost the same score with Identity
the first 20 minutes was like watching Criminal Minds episode. not it is a bad thing, but if TV series can get you the same excitement, why bother go to cinema ? there is not enough story, not enough mystery, not enough twist, to be told in this movie. if you like to revisit old time feeling when you watched Scream or I Know What You Did Last summer, well, maybe you would enjoy this movie. i definitely don't. if you like split personalities genre, don't get your hope high. Split not even at the same level with Fight Club or even Identity.the things that disturbs me the most is how 'the writer' seems to enjoy half naked teens. one girl needs to take off her shirt, one girl needs to take off her skirt. and you would think they would go a little bit respect with female lead, but nope. save the best for last. she finally took her shirt off so they can save her character (rolling eyes). it is just so stupid and only shows how Hollywood movie and their writers exploit teen sexuality in a very smooth way and nobody seems to realize how sicks these writers are. i mean, it doesn't even contribute to the story line, or any character development (who ? dennis ? what a clever way to explain sexually mental disorder patient, huh). i mean, they could make the girls keep their clothes, and the movie will still be understood like it is. i don't mind with a little bit nudity when it contributes to the story (like in 3096 Days, as disturbing as it is, the girl nudity really give viewers better understanding of the kidnapper and the girl relationship). it's kinda suck for mc avoy, since this must be a very interesting character to be played. and as far as his acting goes, i don't have much complain. but got to be honest, his performance shone away by how bad the story is.

The Americans
(2013)

Fresh idea make it worth it
I give it 9 because I enjoy this shows so much, more like subjective reason rather than objective one. I haven't this excited since The Newsroom or The Killing, and Game of Thrones or Walking Dead just not my cup of tea (plus Dexter has been drifted away lately). I was hoping for new show that really driven me curious every episode, and this is it.

The idea is still new and fresh, I could not expect more than Keri and Rhys for the cast (their chemistry is amazing). Despite all the flaws has been said here and there, I think people will enjoy and drawn to the story. It is interesting to see how sleeper work in their so called normal life. It may not too factual but at least it's feel more real than other Hollywood over-heroic spy movie (james bond, wink. I can't remember when was the last time spy in the movie used radio code signal to receive order). It's in between and it is a TV series. So, I guess 9 is fair enough. Some of detail may not accurately presented, but the plot compensate it. The cultural reference might not be greatly accurate, but I think it's a common problem with non-native movie maker (I am not American, and I laugh several time when Hollywood use my country for reference. Yet, it works both way.).

Overall, it's one of TV series that worth watching this year.

Stoker
(2013)

stoker - watching born of psychopath
I've been waiting for this movie since saw the poster. It doesn't live much to my expectation. The plot is not new, and I guess everyone could guess who-is-what. the cinematography is beautiful. but growing up quite familiar with Asia director's work, it's nothing new. not worse nor better.

I give 7 as these are kind of psycho characters I root for, a psychotic behavior with a little bit romantic side (in a movie, not real life. that will be too damn scary). Although, Charlie incest-like-obsession with his niece is quite disturbing. And India reaction toward his uncle weird behavior (e.g. piano scene)just wrong. or maybe the writer intentionally make it that way ? It's kinda annoying because the characters become stuck for me. Either thinking them as Dracula-Mina, or Bates-Mother. but it just messed up to mix them all (but again, they are psycho, who need a moral compass ?) Actings are good, but again, the cast already the best. I am glad their cast Mia as India instead of Carey Mulligan. Mulligan is a good actress, but Mia expression-less face practically won the character. Nicole Kidman does not much shine until the end of the movie. and it just perfect, because thru out the film everything focus with the two, and she just swoop in and established her position in 'the family'. a mother who envy her own daughter is psycho enough for me (poor Richard though. what kind of family he live with). Uncle Charlie remind me a lot with Ice Truck Killer character from Dexter (whom I like so much).

The twist ending are not so twisted. But I do like the scene when India sit at piano chair, waiting, while a minutes ago her Uncle Charlie also sit there. It's like she's considering, and then make a final decision who she really want to kill.

Overall, if looking for thriller with full suspense in every scene,Stoker might not be the one. Stoker is more like a story of 'psycho' telling from its human side.

Life of Pi
(2012)

Just give it the Oscar, okay?
I don't think I need to read the book to confirm how great the book is. The movie simply has shown it. I was amazed the first time, that I actually went back for the second time, tried to rekindle the feeling, within a week. Well, just give it the Oscar already, for every category it could be. Screenplay : Check. Acting performance : Check. Visual effect : Check. Cinematography : Check. Story and plot : Check.

I doubt that the book reader will feel that something essential from the book has missing (like mostly happen with book-adaptation movie). The movie couldn't have been ruined the book. Not with this version, I am sure. In fact, I would love run to the bookstore now and have it my own. Nothing like telling it too fast, or too little, or too much.

This is the great movie with a great story. You will smile, laugh, cry, touched, inspired, twisted, and all the reasons why movie is significant. And when the ending challenge you for more, you know Life of Pi will never be just another Hollywood successful movie.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2
(2012)

An anti-climax of the twilight saga
My best friend never understands why I watched this franchise in the first place. After BD II, I don't understand either. This movie is fail in so many ways if not all ways. It is a total garbage. And I don't say this because I hate the books. I do like the books. But even a fan like me, can not help this final saga reaches even 1.5 out of 10 score.

The screenplay rips off all what matters in the books. I could not say I was satisfied with BD part I, but the excitement to watch Bella becoming immortal, made me feel part II was worth waiting for (I am totally wrong). The process of Bella being a first born take pages in the book.So yes, this should be an important moment. That is not merely showing Bella exploring her new vampire senses, but also how it has created this tense atmosphere among other vampires to deal with a first born, an uncontrollable-always-thirsty-vampire. The movie should use this moment and develop it into some amazed scene, like when we watch superheroes get their first power in the movie. It should be exciting. And of course, to give other characters more lines rather than just listening Bella narrated it for the first 10-15 minutes.

The story plot makes no sense at all.The exposition runs in speed pace, and most of the time narrated, or what I call, summarized by Bella's character. The rising actions feel dry. Alice missing should be the beginning of building up the conflicts in the story. Instead of save some minutes to develop it,the writer, again and again, only mention it between Bella's long narration. The moment where Bella get her tangible power seems no special at all. When it reaches climax, well, it should have reached climax ,no one realizes let alone feeling that.I remember asked my friend what time it was because I could not believe the war scene already there.I was not in climax mode yet.

In the last book, Bella and Edward character have developed. There is this new level of maturity and parenthood that comes along with Renesmee presence.Bella's mother side grows and it is heartwarming to see her effort try to save her family alone during Alice missing. There is a heartbreaking moment in the book when Edward says goodbye to her daughter that I actually cried when read it. Again, the movie fails to show it, not even in dialogs, not even in scenes, not even in gestures.

The baby CGI part is the worst. And what's with the wig? I don't want to be cranky person. But the CGI and the wig are little yet annoying things that make me hard to fall in love with Renesmee character. Seriously, when a baby moves her head and looks at people like that,it is just creepy.

The war scenes didn't blow me much. With war scene, you suppose to feel this tremendous feeling, a high point of tension. But since the plot fails to gradually take me to that point, I did not have time to catch emotional ambiance with the scene. But I have to admit it was not a total bad twisted-scene considering how the book has let us down in that particular part. A little action would be nice, Ms Meyer.

The actors/actresses performance were disappointed.Yet,can't blame them 100% because the dialogs given are not great either. Stewart, again, could not stop bringing her own Stewart's personality to every characters she plays. In Twilight, I thought it was pretty cool that Stewart made Bella's character a little bit dark than the book. But after watching her other works (I've followed her from Catch That Kid,Panic Room,Into the Wild,Adeventureland, etc.), I realize she doesn't try to make different version of Bella. She just plays her own self. The same thing when she played Snow White. She's got to get out from her comfort zone. She should take a complete different role from her own character. I suggest she takes more girly role like Reese in Legally Blonde, so just we could now that she can act.I can not say much for Pattinson. Never really seen him beside Twilight franchise. I think he pulls Edward off. But again, Edward's never been a complex character.

It is sad that after 5 years, they ended the journey of Bella and Edward like this. Such a big disappointment.
