Mallrats
(1995)

Mallrats is the sewer of Smith films
I have seen and love all of Smith's flicks. This is by far the worse. If it weren't for Jason Lee (just a little bit less than the performance in Chasing Amy) this movie would be complete rat droppings. The dialogue is good, but not delivered with the pizazz of other Smith films.

I think Smith films rank like this:

1. Dogma (1999)

2. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

3. Chasing Amy (1997)

4. Clerks. (1994)

5. Mallrats (1995)

I think it safe to say that Kevin Smith, unlike a lot of movie makers, is getting better with time and experience. Big budgets help too. Let's see how Fletch turns out.

Spy Kids 3: Game Over
(2003)

Should this be a weekly Saturday Morning show?
I absolutely loved the first movie- it was a wild movie ride. The second was fun, but had lost some appeal. The third installment is about 85% as good as the second, but the 3D makes your eyes tired. (Which they allude to in the movie!) I must give it to Robert Rodriguez for not making a movie that was soley a 3D gimmick, this movie should still have 75-80% of its appeal on DVD.

But...the series is slipping into the "not-quite-right-for film" script syndrome. This movie felt like a long saturday morning show. Maybe like a TV movie, the ones based on a current series. Not because of the effects, but because it comes off like a rushed production. After all, Robert is making one of these a year.Which is fine..he will continue to get my money multiple times at the theaters. Just don't let them slip past this level Robert and go stinko ala Austin Powers.

As far as the movie..well Juni is my favorite character and the film is about him and a bit about grandpa. So I was interested. Stallone is a stinker of an actor, even at this campy, tongue in cheek level. He is actually better as an actor in DRIVEN then here. Go figure.

My biggest complaint: is it really necessary to show EVERY single character in EVERY single movie? Yes I love continuity, but the last 20 minutes felt like a rush to get everyone in the movie, even if we did not see them do anything.....

Last but not least, Salma Hayek looks like a doll in this flick.

Yes..I will buy this DVD...again. Thanks for making a parent fun Mr. Rodriguez.

Some Girl
(1998)

Pay the shipping, and you have yourself a free movie
A terrible film, quite honestly. Dumb characters, crappy script, a story you could care less about.

But...I did like Giovanni Ribisi's character. Or maybe I just like him because of his past efforts like "Boiler Room" and "Saving Private Ryan". Anyhow, who produced this crap? Oh yeah...Marrissa and Giovanni Ribisi's dad apparently. Of all the scripts that don't get made, hard to believe this wasn't one of them.

And finally, a movie in which I don't like Juliett Lewis' acting or character. Now that takes some doing.

This VHS tape will be collecting dust in my collection never to be seen again. What a waste.

Daredevil
(2003)

Enjoyable during, Forgettable after viewing
True, it's no Matrix, X2 or Spidey, but if it did not have these comic- to-film giants to measure up against, it would come out pretty tall.

As a fan of the above comics and the Daredevil story, I must say I enjoyed the film. But darn it...it just wasn't memorable.

Why?

The Kingpin is not like the original. But I still dug it. Elektra was great looking, but lacked the dark mystique. I love J. Lo's boyfriend as an actor and writer, but doesn't convince me as a superhero.

There may be more Daredevil movies...but I am not going to be too upset if there aren't any sequels. It does happen that they set us up for more films, but don't deliver. Remember the Spawn movie, anybody?

Didn't think so.

The Matrix Reloaded
(2003)

99.99% as good as the first
NO SPOILERS IN THIS COMMENT: 2 B Brief- This film has better action and special effects than the legendary Matrix. Though there are several parts where the action looks "animated", the action is breathtaking. But...it just lacked the "feel" , "vibe" and "edge" of the first one. What would have made it better for me would be a little less of the sappy love portion of the plot. In short: PHENOMENAL car chase scene; awesome fight sequences; and cool "new" characters. The end however left me......

Well go see it for yourself. And don't leave until you see the previews after the credits....
