Bridgerton
(2020)

Aweful
Those telling you this is ok are the ones crying all day about cultural appropriation. Bunch of hypocrites.

The series is empty and fake as much as the cult that made it.

It is an insult to Jane Austen, an insult to British culture, history and cinema.

Another example of ideological fanatics pretending to be artists while all they want is to push their propaganda via every medias they can get their hands on.

These guys would make soap that doesn't wash just to push their propaganda on the box.

Same thing here, this movie has no other purpose then to put diversity where it doesn't belong.

Life is too short to be subjected to such bad material.

Edge of the World
(2021)

Lots of ideological hatred in the ratings
Don't believe the low ratings and reviews. This movie touches subjects like colonialism, imperialism and Islam. So of course many people will rage about the movie not being in line with their views or beliefs on the subjects. It's not a movie for peoples that need a "safe space".

I don't have any biases on the subjects and to me it seemed pretty fair. The movie doesn't depict the British Empire as all evil or all good. It doesn't depict the Muslims as good or evil either. It doesn't show the indigenous people in a particular good or bad light either. So I'd say the movie didn't sink into modern politics which is always surprising and refreshing.

As for the movie in general. Actors are great, scenery is great, music is good enough, costumes look good at least for someone not knowing exactly what costumes of the times are supposed to look like.

As for historical accuracy. According to Wikipedia, there doesn't seem to be a lot to go about with this story. The place was quite isolated in a time when info didn't circulate very well. So in this condition making the movie forces the artists to make romanticized relationships, characters and dialogs.

My main complain about this movie would be about the fact the guy's reign lasted around 27 years and this movie is more about how it all began. I felt it would have made a great TV show or mini series. So it's a bit sad that it felt like watching the first episodes of an unfinished show.

Also they tried to be a bit pretentious about the main characters thoughts. Thoughts they probably had no way to know anything about. So I wouldn't have made the choice to go with made up thoughts no one can relate to or care about. Yet it did provide some context of the time period.

To sum it up. This movie is quite ok, pleasant to watch and certainly no where near as bad as people are saying in the reviews.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Another polictical show
I get people have political views and biases. Yet a movie or a show isn't supposed to be a political pamphlet.

Not only this is a political pamphlets, it's pretty bad at it and it's about pretty bad political views and biases. To the point of promoting violent open borders activists. Violent activists that exist in real life by the way.

Not to mention promoting racism. Which has become normal since a few years.

Clearly Disney knows people buy Disney+ and won't leave it for a bad show so they don't try to make it any good.

This show says a lot about what the new content from Marvel will be from now. Which is very oriented political pamphlets and propaganda.

At least in the previous Marvel contents, the politics was more about American freedom.

Clearly this is a marking stone. There was the somehow good Marvel stuff before that, and the bad Marvel stuff since it became as bad as this show.

The Handmaid's Tale
(2017)

The arrogance of the fans say it all
This show is political, loved by biased fans just loving a fantasy that is up to their prejudices of the real World.

This show doesn't make any sense in any ways. It's slow paced, dull and lame. The kind of show you already saw if you read the synopsis.

That said. This show is a funny way of seeing into the future of cinema. Once a social issue will get better, instead of being happy and moving on. Militants will just make fictions about the problems to keep crying about them.

I mean, this show is so political and bad because of it that you can enjoy it as a parody. Yet, even as a parody of it's political views it's still pretty bad.

La princesse de Montpensier
(2010)

Very sad movie !
Sad because it reminds you what french cinema once was and what it could still be today. Sad also because it gets only 6 out of 10 which reminds you french cinema is not about to get better. I'm even fairly certain that if this had not been directed by Tavernier who made his notoriety in a very different time, this movie would not even have been financed.

If it can be called bad, the only bad aspect of this movie is that the story isn't important nor interesting in a general way. Then again this is the usual with Tavernier and to me this is the most obvious aspect of his genius. Nowadays you give someone the billions dollars empire of Disney and the Star Wars story and they'll make unwatchable movies. While Tavernier can make an amazing movie with a banal story. Yeah, basically it's only about this girl everyone is in love with. Like the cover image shows, four men looking at one girl. If it sounds like something you'd hate, don't let prejudices prevent you from discovering this treasure. As they say, don't judge a book(or movie) by it's cover.

What makes this movie so great is everything else than the story itself. Characters, dialogues, cinematography, scenery, acting, costumes, historical context and last but not least the exquisite quality of the french language. This movie is like something you'd see in the 1960s but with a modern touch. This is like this a rare bottle of wine that you will only taste once in your life and spend the rest of your life hoping you'll find the taste again. You can savor every words they say in this film, every scenes, every costumes. I could go on but seriously I was baffled at how good this movie is.

The girl does a good performance, true she is not to my liking so I wasn't impressed. Yet the passion the men have for her makes the whole thing credible even if you think she's not that special. The four men after her all did an outstanding performance. Specially her husband. The husband is so good you always hope he will be in the next scene. The dialogues are smart and serious. This is a serious movie to be enjoyed by serious people or people in a serious mood. Like a good wine, this is something you give to someone who can appreciate good wine.

I also liked how this movie was free of any propaganda. I didn't feel any criticism of gender roles of the time, religions, wars or nobility. There was no politically correct bias or anything. This movie was very understanding of the time it was depicting. This was so refreshing. They showed that the men were forced into marriage as the women were. As one of the character said "we pay dearly the privileges of our birth ranks". There was the Catholics against Protestants wars going on but it was merely a background story. There's no sides or ideologies or messages. The only morals you can find in this movie are morals you can apply to any place at any time. So we could say this movie is universally great. You can be absolutely certain that for example, if it could be very well dubbed in english, the anglophones would adore this movie. Even the British don't do similar drama of this era of such quality and they try very hard to.

Finally, French people need to be reminded that they have a great historical, cultural and architectural heritage. In some way, like the British, you French have a duty to provide quality movies like this one. You owe it to all the "francophonie" and the rest of the world. No one else but you can do it. The state takes your money in taxes to provide vile entertainment. The least you can do when by miracle an outstanding movie like this is made is to give it a good rating... I mean how is this not a great movie for it's type ? When they make really good stuff french people don't even watch it and the rest of us french speaking people get to see it years later only to be told it didn't make money in France... I mean... Dear France, please get your **** together !!!

Thanks.

Last Knights
(2015)

Not worth the time
This movie isn't so bad, it's just not good, it's slow, lame and dull. If you as so much as heard of the 47 Ronin story, you've already seen this movie. That's the general feeling of the movie. As if you or me had heard the story, liked it and decided to make a version with western knights but only based on the big lines of the well known story...

With Western Knights but in a wannabe fantasy world that make no sense with no attempt to give it some depth of any kind. With Western knights mixed with a few non white people with foreign accents, including the Emperor...

People in this movie don't even have haircuts fitting any notion of medieval period. That's how bad it is, how much the director didn't cared... You can imagine Clive Owen asking the director "what about my hairs" and the director answering "what about them ?"... Unbelievable...

Rarely seen a movie that felt so empty. Be careful about positive reviews on that film. Maybe if its the 8th movie you've seen in your life you'll like it but if you have any expectations, don't waste your time.

Luke Cage
(2016)

Not your first choice if you don't have lots of free time
Hate in this review section is quite disturbing. I read here that if you didn't liked the show it's because you're racist. Some say it has a low score because its from the USA and people there are racist.

This is quite laughable. I mean if you really don't like black people you won't watch a show about a black hero in a black neighbourhood with a cast of nearly only black people...

There's quite a few very racist quotes from that movie though. Funny how that bothers no one...I understand its in Harlem but still, there a few quotes that would never be on TV if races were reversed...

Bad : This show has a LOT of flaws and deserve some bad critic. Its slow and yes, like many here said, its 4 hours stretched to 13. Its not just the waste of time, its the frustration of not getting more story in one season. Also the bad guys are very insignificant even if they are good characters.

Good : Mood and style are good. Good actors play good characters. Luke Cage is easy to like a make you care for his story.

Overall it was better than Jessica Jones but far from being as good as DareDevil. So my main critic is that it ask too much of your time for what it gives you. So again, if you cant get the time to watch all you'd want, maybe you'd prefer to pass on this one.

Penny Dreadful
(2014)

Don't be so sure you'll like this show.
This show has everything to make an awesome show. I was expecting a lot but after watching the first season I ended up quite disappointed. Problem is that I should have liked this show. I like this type of shows, I like Showtime shows, I like the period and the theme. I even like the main actors.

This show is strange, awkward, slow, doll, lame, boring and often quite stupid and frustrating. I was always hoping it would get better but it never did. I fell asleep many times trying to watch the whole thing. I don't get how some people can claim this is scary even a little, I've seen spiders scarier than anything in this show. Everything in this show was done better so many times...

They mix creatures like vampire, werewolf and demon and characters like Van Helsing, Frankenstein or Dorian Gray. Yet the only thing I actually found interesting was this Dorian Gray which is really just some eccentric British dude...

At first characters are interesting cause you don't know anything about them so its the mystery around their story that is interesting. Yet the more you get to know the more they become lame and boring...

There's not a lot of action and when there is some its quite ordinary, banal and lame. The main story is quite messed up, slow paced and not interesting. Again the more you understand what's going on the more you think they had nothing to say and just wanted to mix things together to make a dark Gothic show.

On a more positive note its visually awesome, the costumes, accents, scenery and everything 19th century-like is really well made. Actors are all very good. Also I like how its always dark, dark colours and dark mood. Its nice that its a very mature show for adult.

Still, if they make more of this I hope they'll come up with a story that is actually a little bit interesting... I mean, this is not asking too much...

Defiance
(2013)

Watchable despite many flaws
I don't regret watching two seasons of it so its not that bad. Still, they seriously could have done a better job on many things.

This is a mix of Western, Mad Max and Star Trek. So nothing in this show is very new. Overused concepts recycled, but having 3 of them mixed together make things a bit more interesting.

There is some good characters, good actors doing their best with their sometimes poor lines and scenes. Girls are cute and some of the men are rough and tough. The story get better and deeper as you watch it and subplots are not so bad in general.

Now what really ruined the whole thing for me as it mostly always does is the family friendly thing. Its not a teen show but its not an adult show either. Its between the two categories. So if you're an adult it gets to teenage-like sometimes and I hope that if you watch this with your kids you'll find it too mature for your kids sometimes. This is the kind of show that doesn't have swearing or nudity. Yet they have alien words very close to the real ones that they use all the time. Also there's references or allusions to hardcore stuff sometimes. They also have scenes that really are for adult. For example in one scene there's a prostitute feeding an old man who's wearing a diaper and she sit on him and spread food all over his chest and they have sex for awhile... How is that family friendly in any ways ? Its like if they wanted to make a serious adult show but had to deal with rating or channel rules. So they cheated as best as they could to make it watchable for adults.

Finally there's the issue of the extraterrestrials. I mean I get they were limited by money and all but still... There's 4 species so far, 4 different species and they all are humanoids, Seriously ? How is that possible... Anyways, there's the Wookies or bearded apes, there's the guys that look like Darth Vader without his suit, there's the very white people who just are powdered with white hairs and finally there's the savages with mean cat-like faces... Their cultures and customs are so lame, boring and ordinary. None of it is new, its all mixes of cultures and customs we have or had on Earth.

As I said its watchable. I'd say if you don't have a lot of time there's a lot of shows better than this out there, but if you are looking for something to watch to pass time its not the worst show out there.

Shéhérazade
(1963)

Unique and kinda epic
I was very pleased to watch this and very surprised that this movie was forgotten.

This is a very well made movie with great costumes, sets and scenery. It has good visual effects even in battle scenes specially for the 60s. It also has very good acting and awesome dialogues. The story is a bit banal but its an Arabian tale type of movie which is quite rare in general and even more for french movies.

Don't believe the score it got here, French people mostly always down rate their movies. You can nearly always ad two points to a movie rated by French people. This movie is worth at least an 8 and its a must seen.

Most Arab main characters aren't Arabs but its not so bad, they end up being quite credible specially since its in the 9th century in Iraq. I guess you can think they were more like Persians or something. Anyways this movie isn't about historical accuracy at all.

This is a very unique movie, the kind you will probably only see once.

Le chevalier de Pardaillan
(1962)

More d'Artagnan !
These two movies Le chevalier de Pardaillan 1962 and Hardi Pardaillan! 1964 are both made by Bernard Borderie who also directed "Les trois mousquetaires: Première époque - Les ferrets de la reine" and "Les trois mousquetaires: Tome II - La vengeance de Milady" both from 1961.

Both d'Artagnan and Pardaillan are played by Gérard Barray who seems to be playing the exact same character in all four movies. Both are a bold knight from Gascony with the same attitude. He even has similar lines. Like when a women says the bad guys were 20 and he says only 10 and I'm from Gascony.

Even the villain is played by Guy Delorme who also played Rochefort in Borderie's movies. So if you liked this you may want to watch the mouseketeers movies and vice versa.

Other than that its a pretty decent movie for its type. It could have been more serious but like most french swashbuckler's movies of the 50-60 its a funny entertaining adventure movie with a bit of romance.

Joe
(2013)

Cage does it again.
This is one of these movies that Cage isn't only in for the paycheck. Seems he had money issues so lets not be too harsh with him.

The story is nothing special but exceptional performance from most of the cast, awesome realism and the weird mood it puts you in makes it a must see masterpiece. In its category it certainly is amongst the best.

I really like this type of movies, they remind me of french movies where its more about the characters and their environment, their culture or the time they live in than about the story itself.

Movies like this deserve a lot of respect, sometimes people fail to make a good movie even though they have an epic story and cast. So you really have to know what you're doing to make a very good movie with a banal story.

Also this story is in the south and there's many black people and there wasn't even something close to a reference to racism, not at all. No propaganda of any kind. That was quite refreshing, I really appreciated that.

Delighted, Bravo !

300: Rise of an Empire
(2014)

Disappointing in many ways but watchable.
What I really liked about the first movie was that it had a unique feeling never seen before or since. It was like if someone would tell this legendary epic tale around a fire like in old times and while the story was told you had the surreal images like if they came out of the mind of a young lad imagining all this in his head.

This epic effect is completely gone in this one... You never get that feeling no even for a minute. This one is more like the show Spartacus. Of course it was a deception for me but it could still have been a really good movie despite that. They kept the look, the colours, the exaggerated fighting moves, a bit of the mythical stuff and such. At least it still looks like the first one.

The big problems are the poor choice of actors and the fact that the story is pretty lame, unimpressive, boring and banal.

The main actor isn't bad but he's not special in any ways and he really doesn't look Greek, most Greeks don't look Greek, in fact the more they have an important role the less they look Greek. Greeks are not Americans... For example this guy called Hans Matheson... Look him up on IMDb ... He looks like a young British RedCoat or something... Certainly not a Greek soldier...

Anyways... I gave it 7 because being related to the first one still makes it a watchable movie but it sure was a deeply flawed failed sequel.

RoboCop
(2014)

Heavy with propaganda
Many already had critics about all the reasons this movie is OK at best so I wont ad anything on that part.

What I'd like to point out is a good example of western arrogance and deep racism. This movie start with a scene where the USA seems to occupy Iran... Filming crew are having fun watching machines blow up Iranian kids... Can you imagine if a country like Iran would make a movie where they occupy the USA and blow up American children's ?

Then they try to sell the idea that these robots should be used on Americans but they don't want to cause you know they wont let machines decide if its OK to kill children's, its immoral. Yet they sure didn't bother about that for Iranian kids...

I can at least give them a good point for making corporations, propaganda medias and those favourable to the use of drones the bad guys.

Au nom du fils
(2012)

No wonder it was a flop in theaters
You can see by the comments on the net or even in the few reviews here that this movie is made for people who despises Christianity and or see Christians as some villains like orcs in movies.

I saw it because I didn't had to pay and I thought it might be amusingly bad, but no not even, its just a bad movie.

The crew behind the movie said it was a flop because of Christian's campaign against it. Nice way to blame others for your bad movie...

I'm not religious but you don't need to be Christian to dislike this movie. You have to really hate something to watch a movie that is anti something. Usually in movies you look for a good story, not hateful propaganda and if you're looking for a true story or a documentary-like movie usually you'll want unbiased objective views.

This movie could only be and was only liked by a few haters.

Astérix & Obélix: Au service de sa Majesté
(2012)

How sad...
As a movie of its own its watchable and would deserve maybe a 4 out of 10, as an Atstérix movie its horrible and as an adaptation of the legendary "Astérix chez les Bretons" its a revolting abomination.

What made Astérix so good was the subtlety of the humour and yes they made references to modern cultures too but not in such obvious way.

Also the authors had so much talent and such a huge cultural background, comparing their work to this movie make it look like it was written by a bunch of drunk teenagers.

On the good side the guy playing Jolitorax was funny even tho he looked nothing like the original character.

In my opinion Edouard Baer is always funny but except for the costume he was just himself and nothing like Astérix, same with Cesar except Fabrice Luchini isn't so funny.

Depardieu did what he could with the lines he had, nothing special or memorable.

I was surprised by the Normand, they were like in the cartoons for once but one was named "Yadutaf" ... I wont write what I think about that cause they don't allow vulgarity on this website.

I don't get why they removed many good characters and moments to replace them by very bad ones... The worst was Gaulix, they just replaced him by a lame English character with no lines or personality. Maybe its just me but he was one of my favorite Astérix character. I had such hopes for this character and they just removed him ... I mean whats wrong with Gaulix ? Was he too "french" for an audience that is brainwashed into hating their identity.

Even tho the title was repulsive and the movie bound to be awful, I watched it out of nostalgia and ended up frustrated. If like me the original is one of your best childhood memories, do yourself a favour and keep these memories intact by not watching this pathetic "adaptation".

This movie is a good example of the decline of french culture and society, France really needs an intervention like they do with people who fall from grace although the same could be said about most occidental countries...

Yeah yeah I know, I'm done ranting.

The Bourne Legacy
(2012)

Why many bad critics ?
I don't understand why so many people hated this movie. Its a decent movie in its category, it has great acting, nice action scenes and visual effects and an "ok" plot. Its serious, thrilling and makes you care for the guy more than in the other movies imo.

Yeah this movie doesn't really add anything to the series. Its obvious that they just wanted to keep selling the Bourne name by making the same type of movie but with a new actor/character while sadly adding the clichés of the other movies. That's what I like about this movie, they were able to make something very watchable out of this bad marketing idea. These days there's so many bad movies made by teams that had everything to make a great one...

Some say it had no beginning or ending. Since its a follow up of the other trilogy they skipped a lot thinking people would have seen the others. Also its supposed to be another trilogy, so in this perspective its normal to get this kind of ending. If its not what you like you can wait for the whole trilogy to come out.

This movie is not a masterpiece but its worth watching and deserves better than a 6/10.

Ratatouille
(2007)

This movie is not overrated
There's many reviews for this movie and many of them say this movie is overrated and I think its unfair.

This movie is made for a certain kind of viewers and you can see by the critics that many people loved it.It may not be to your taste but it doesn't make it a bad movie.

Its not an epic movie but it doesn't always have to be.You can make very good simple movies and very bad epic movies.

Animation and voice acting are amazing.Characters are not so memorable but again they don't always have to be.The story is good enough and overall its a funny and entertaining movie.

I admit that this movie doesn't targets very young children's but as a 27 years old I loved it.My 29 years old brother recommended it to me cause I had prejudices I mean this movie is called Ratatouille with a rat on the cover ... lol

For some getting older doesn't mean you stop enjoying good animated movies so its always nice to see some that are more oriented towards adults like this one.

(MILD SPOILERS) The parts where Linguini yells in the freezer and when the guy eats the ratatouille are by far the funniest things I've seen in an animated movie in a while lol

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
(2011)

How can we sink so low nearly 50 years later ?
When I saw the trailer, I could already see the whole movie in my head and I knew it would be awful.I could also see that the CGI were not up to the task.

Then I came here to see the ratings and lots of people seems to have liked it so I thought maybe I was wrong and its not so bad.Sadly it was worst on many points.

  • Actors are just filling the spot, I mean they could have used any members of the crew like cameraman or sound technician and it wouldn't have made any differences.

  • The story is lame and predictable with no originality, imagination or dept. Its almost like if it came out of a script writing software where you put some key words and it generate a story. If you're a fan of the old ones don't watch this you'll only end up angry.

  • The CGI would be awesome in a video game but in the movie you never feel like you're looking at real apes.Even the movements like fighting or jumping or climbing and even walking don't look natural.I mean I would have thought that if they couldn't make them look real they would at least give them realistic movements ... But no not even and sometimes its just plain stupid like multiple apes jumping out of 3rd floor windows (lol) and all at the same time all getting on the ground at the same time no cuts or anything.Yeah facial expressions are good but still on a face that doesn't look real.

The best analogy I can find to describe looking for something like a modern version of the old movies and watching this would be like if you want a 2 inches thick old style pizza with the best quality ingredients cooked in an epic antic oven but instead you end up with an economic brand of a modern industrialized frozen atrocity half reheated in the microwave and still cold in the middle.

More and more movies and t.v. shows are as horrible as this these days and not only that people write, produce and sell them but lots of people likes it that way.Its like if a huge number of our populations are becoming empty zombies and these movies/shows are meant to feed them, it really scares me ...

La commanderie
(2010)

Not as good as it could have been ...
There's good and bad things in this series but overall its not something I would recommend.

They have great costumes, weapons, sets and some good acting but its tainted by modern French... For example half the cast especially the 'hero' have a modern french accent and the other half seems to try to have a moderate accent to sound more medieval but in the end the whole thing sound awkward, they should have decided between one or the other. Also some characters act and think like a modern person would, sometimes it felt like I was watching a lame Kaamelot with no punch, humour or enjoyable characters...To be short there's a huge lack of authenticity despite visible efforts and there's too much sometimes lame side stories in the not so good main story.

There's nothing to see here that as not been done better many times, don't waste 8h on this unless you really have nothing better to watch...It seems like lots of French movies and t.v. shows are made for a growing population of empty zombies just like American ones.

Rambo
(2008)

Great movie
I watched this movie with very low expectations but its nothing like the previous Rambo movies that were a bit worse every time.

This is a very good movie on its own and will make you forget that its a sequel to not so good movies. You don't need to have seen the movies to understand this one but if you do you'll understand the character better.I suggest reading the good books, at least the first one instead of watching the movies tho.

There's nothing exceptional about the story, but actors are very good and committed, the realism of the visuals is outstanding, better than most war movies i've seen.

Its cold, mature, brutal and bloody but its not a cheap action movie where they just trow stupid violence at you for the sake of it. Its what I would call solid entertainment for serious adult. With all the junk t.v. and movies we get these days I found it very refreshing.

In my opinion, except for Oscar this is by far the best Stallones' movie you can find.

Solomon Kane
(2009)

Good entertainment
Not the best movie i've seen but there's enough great moments to make it a must see.If you like this kind of movie you'll like this one for sure.

The visual effects are very well done for a movie with this kind of budget.

Actors are good, especially James Purefoy (I can't get enough of his sociopath look)

Battles are bloody and funny

The plot is a bit weak but everything else is good enough to compensate.

Kingdom of Heaven
(2005)

Watch the full version
I had high expectations for this movie, but I was highly disappointed cause lots of things didn't made sense and it looked like a half done movie... But then I saw the full director cut version which has nearly an hour of additional scenes.

The complete version is one of the best movie I've ever seen, everything that missed is there everything make sense and its beyond my expectations... So if you didn't see the long version, you have'nt seen this movie. The hour they've cut was really missing so its worth re-watching it if you've only seen the short version. They should have burned all the previous version after the release of the full version just to be sure that no one would ever see this bad version of a great movie.

Munich
(2005)

Well made but very wrong and one sided
I don't think I say something that you wont know from reading the description of the movie but I prefer putting the spoiler alert just in case.

What if a German had made a movie about courageous Nazi soldiers who bravely pursue and kill few Jews who dared defy the Reich ? Do you think it would have been nominated for academy awards ? (lol)

From my point of view this movie is an insult to the Palestinians who are still struggling to get all that was taken from them ...

This is a good example that history is written by the victors...

If you don't know or care about the Palestinian situation you may enjoy this movie.
