Luther: The Fallen Sun
(2023)

Not as good as the series but still decent
It's pretty different than the series, it's more like a fast-paced action film. Obviously it makes much more sense mostly if you know the whole John Luther story. The visuals are pretty creative, as for the story I do think Neil Cross was more into delivering a message than actual development of the plot, and that's partly why so many people didn't like it. The usual serial killer films in a way romanticise them, here they break up with the usual fascinating vision of a villain. It may serve as a mirror for those who saw it all and need shocking brutality to get hooked, it shows them who they actually are, that's why it infuriates them, when other senseless action films don't.

Into the Night
(2020)

Annoying
I haven't read the source material so I'm not sure whether the book was bad, but the people who wrote the script probably had a decent idea (flashbacks are OK) but lacked some skills. The episodes are short and yet every single one of them contains the same "That is a good question" line like five times each (in different languages maybe but it's still the same). At some point it sounds like it was written by a bunch of 12 year olds who didn't read what the rest of them wrote. Acting is mostly not that bad, except for the girl who plays Sylvie, she sort of has the same face all the time, the face of a victim not that of a badass leader. There are holes in the plot that make zero sense, situations just appear resolved and you wonder how but there's never an answer, people act in a way that none in their sane mind ever would, etc. And yet it's kind of watchable and you wonder how it ends. But frankly, I'd rather look up the book and read last few pages, maybe it's better written.

Father Christmas Is Back
(2021)

Unbearable
It's been a while since I saw anything this bad. There are loads of clichés, terrible acting, unfunny jokes that have already been seen anywhere else, and the word "Christmas" appears like every fourth word. The only person who is not completely hateable is the guy from My Family. Maybe the father's girlfriend, too, but just because she's cute, the idiotic things she says are an outrageously pathetic attempt at comedy. Also, all the women squeak like a squeegee on a glass pane and it's a pain to listen to this.

Patria
(2020)

Probably the best thing I've seen this year
Visually, it's the Basque Country exactly as I remember it, so it felt like I was really there.

The divided narration makes the whole story more compelling than it could be, it shows you both perspectives without really judging them.

Acting is awesome, special kudos to the girl who played Arantxa, but basically everyone was so natural as if you watched your neighbours.

But these are just technicalities and this show is so much more than that. After each episode my face was wet with tears, I dreamt it, I started crying when I thought about it, my eyes have filled with tears even now as I'm writing it. This story gets to you and becomes personal even if you have nothing to do with it. It's universal. There's no taking sides. It's about people who become victims of the times they got to live in.

Dracula
(2020)

What the hell did I just watch?
It's probably the most pretentious version of the story I've ever seen.

It starts quite well visually in the first episode, but then it just turns to too much pointless talking at the convent. Why did the count even go there - I do not know. I don't care about Van Helsing being a nun, but the things she says are pretty controversial even in modern times. And pointless, again.

The second episode is the journey to England. It seems a bit ridiculous to me that anyone would go from Varna (The Black Sea) to England by ship, since it's pretty much the longest way possible and, well, the vampire would easily eat the whole crew on the way. Which he does. And the whole story is about it. The PC thing, I didn't even notice it until I started reading reviews, only right wing lunatics pick it up, since it's not key to the story, not that there is any story here - Van Helsing seems like a lame excuse to a pointless festival of gore.

The third episode - for heaven's sake, could it go any worse? It's a modern times Dracula who has some funny bits but mostly he does nothing apart from looking for food on Tinder and texting Lucy who has no personality at all and most of the time she's portrayed dancing in a club in a glorified music video fashion. And again, there's Van Helsing somehow travelling in time and lots of pointless talking about blood.

I gave it three stars because of the main actor - he's funny, charismatic and perfect for this. But there's no story behind it. There's no point. There's no logic. It pretends to be philosophic but it's outrageously empty, like those people who use loads of fancy words to cover up the fact they have nothing to say. So basically - watch it at your own risk, probably it could be better with drugs in your system.

La casa de las flores
(2018)

Weird
It's not funny at all, if that's what you expect. While some subjects are important, especially in the context of Mexican reality, I'm not sure what's the real point of this show. I can't really compare it to anything so I won't put a star rating - I'm at the 4th episode and I'm yet to make any sense of it. I don't understand why Cecilia Suárez talks in this creepy, slow way, either - has she had a stroke or something? Overall, it's watchable, but if there's any story, it's well hidden behind bad acting of a half of the cast. There are way better Mexican shows on Netflix.

Atlantis
(2013)

Stupid, but still fun
I decided to watch it because of Mark Addy, I didn't expect much, I suspected it would be as bad as "Robin Hood", and, well... Sometimes I come to think they spent all the funds for hiring him so they had nothing for special effects nor sets and locations.

The mythology in the show is only a loose base of names, sometimes some motives, but if you want to learn about the Greek mythology - then not from here. All the characters are just thrown into one place and time, sometimes they have something in common with the mythology, usually it's only a name. But hey, these are not historic facts, they are myths, so I guess they based an adventure fairytale on other fairy tales, right? Don't get uptight about it, it's not about truth anyway.

There's a lot of bad reviews here, I can see why, but most of these people haven't given the show a chance. The characters are actually not so idiotic as they seem, there's more to them than just the predictable stereotypes we get at the beginning, but they develop the way they are expected to develop, that's true. But in a world with movies like "Fast & Furious", "Twilight", countless crime series about good agents and bad terrorists, you really expect every medium budget production to be of great quality?

To sum it all up, it's definitely not anywhere near "Game of Thrones" and such, but it's not so annoyingly stupid as "Robin Hood". It's just average, mindless entertainment.

True Adolescents
(2009)

Complete waste of time
First of all, this movie is an example how not to make a film. It absolutely lacks any story at all. You get a story like those you were writing in high school, not knowing how to end it and having no message to give. You keep watching and thinking what it's all about and what the point of this film is. Every time there's a glimpse of a meaning, it disappears right away.

So you meet a middle-aged rock man Sam who pathetically forces himself to play cool and maybe he's supposed to be funny, but damn, he's not. His GF kicks him out of the house so he stays with his aunt. The aunt wants him to get a job but he's too cool for that, then he seems to feel guilty and he takes her son and his best friend to a camping trip to the middle of nowhere. Here's probably the only good point of this film - nice views.

Generally when there's a trip involved in a film you suppose it should change something for the characters of the film, well, this one doesn't. There is no logic in the construction of the film, there are random scenes that have no continuation later on. You hope the guy will teach the kids something about the music, nope, they just stop at a motel and this bit ends. You hope the kids will learn something about their sexuality, nope, the bit ends with "Sorry I called you a fag". There is no message, nothing to hang on, the film ends up like there was no idea or money to finish it.

I'm writing this because I'm angry I wasted my time on this. When I was a teenager and I was writing stories that had no point, I just burnt them or threw away after reading them. I wish the person who had made this film had done the same to the script. Really, try to watch some real good indie films first because in my opinion the makers of this one are like the main guy in this movie - forcing themselves to be cool while they are just pathetic. At least take some lessons from Xavier Dolan or Jonathan Caouette for example, if you want to limit yourself to North American film makers.
