Chasing Mavericks
(2012)

Chasing Mavericks: A way to reconnect with your soul
If you want to watch a movie with a fresh point of view on the world and enjoy every minute of it, I highly recommend watching Chasing Mavericks. Chasing Mavericks is the type of movie that will make you feel alive. Not only me, but many of the other people watching it in the theater were so moved that you would actually they would move with the waves in the movie. The movie approaches the theme of love, family and freedom in a very natural way; something that we rarely see in any other movies of this decade. It's very inspirational and motivating, yet it's very real and natural, so you get inspired without being lectured. My hat's off to the person who first came up with the idea of having Gerard Butler play the role of Frosty, because no other actor could pull it off so perfectly. Butler's character is a mentor, father figure and yet, he does seem larger than life, a character that I can call Poseidon, the god of the seas. Aside from that, this is one of those rare movies that resonates father and son relationship, which is really good to see for a change. Grown men, including me, were actually crying when they watched some emotional scenes and this rarely happens. I highly recommend this movie to everyone who wants to reconnect with their emotions and thoughts.

Better Off Ted
(2009)

It's a shame that this show was canceled
I guess I know why this show was canceled. This show is so anti- commercial and critical that it probably upset the corporate pigs. The story lines are both hilarious and original, usually pointing the comic finger to the corporate owners. The dialogs are witty, the acting and directing is superb. I just wish they would reconsider making a few more seasons for this show. Unlike many other TV comedies that are same old-same old, this show shows us how ugly and dehumanizing the advertising, science and marketing business can be. It also shows us how the same people who do vicious acts at work, live like many other people, therefore making us think twice about the decisions we make in life and the effects it may have on the world around us.

You just have to see this show. it's too good to miss.

Ally McBeal
(1997)

You should watch this one!
This TV series was amazing. It truly captures the essence of working in a good working environment, reacting with colleagues and clients. It also points out very critical issues in life that are rarely discussed in other shows and movies. Perhaps its because the story lines discuss the issues of love, fidelity, death, bigotry, suicide, ambition, etc. from both the logical and sentimental points of view. This said, it also maintains an upbeat comedy going on at the same time. The show keeps getting better and better up to the fifth season. Don't get me wrong, season 5 is also good, but it seems like the writers or producers forced to bring the curtain down on the show. In this last season, most of the main characters leave for no reason, and are replaced with new ones; just as you start to like the new characters, they get replaced too!

My favorite characters are: Elaine, Jenny, Ling and the shrink in the final season.

Idi i smotri
(1985)

See, if you dare
Ellem Klimov's masterpiece about the German invasion of Russia. This film truly captures the feeling of war. You can even feel the quick mud and cold weather in this film. One thing that is truly amazing about this movie is that although it is an anti war film(and the best, in my opinion), it doesn't whine about war and how the soldiers are treated(unlike "Born on the fourth of July"); instead, it gives us the true feelings of the people who are under attack by others. I don't recommend this film for people who(like me) lived through these situations since it brings your most horrible memories in front of you. But other than that, it's highly recommended for people who are interested in cinematography and sound design, since it has some new ideas used in it.

Fa yeung nin wah
(2000)

about a guilty pleasure
Kar Wai Wong's film gives us a different view about love and affairs in other cultures. What stroke me about this movie was that even though we don't see much about the couples' relationships, the movie flows very sensual. Although the characters and their words and actions all seem the same throughout the movie,We feel the love between them very present. I loved the production design which gave us clues about each set of character, their relationship and mood by giving elements of color and patterns. Also, the cinematography is very well done, with vast, but useful use of slow motion. The constant fade in and fade outs in this movie makes us feel like we are a nosy neighbor, watching the couple's relationship from behind a door or window. The only down point of this film is that it doesn't introduce its characters very well in the first act.

Le fantôme de la liberté
(1974)

Lets question human
Luis Bunuel's Phantom of liberty questions our idea about freedom and liberty. Well, we know that all of us want more freedom in our lives. But Luis Bunuel's point is that: How free do you want to be? Saying that, he gives us many examples of wacky, surrealistic segments which each of them leaves us just as the story gets interesting. With each segment giving us a different view of a "free world". In this film, human is looked from an ostrich's point of view, which means that we are treated equally as weird creatures who don't have any idea about life. Bunuel also makes us make decisions about each character and story, and later on, make decisions about our decisions. and then, evaluate ourselves and our values and think about our values. Saying this, this movie is more about what it reflects on the audience, rather than what its content is. With a surrealist approach, this movie is also humorous, with very few shock effects, which makes it much more interesting than many other surrealist films.

La otra conquista
(1998)

It's time to see the truth
This movie is one of the very few films that shows us the truth about the Spaniard invasion of the Aztecs. Without taking any sides, it shows us how hard it was for the Aztecs to give up their values and become "civilized" from the Spaniard's point of view. Knowing that many of the characters and events were exactly as they happened in history, Salvador Carrasco does a very good job in blending true characters and events with fictitious ones. Also, by using the actual dialogues and actions of the real characters which many of them have been glorified by our history books, We start questioning these people and even what our books are telling us. Given this, we also understand that these cultures didn't understand anything about each other and never tried to do so.

Dom za vesanje
(1988)

time to watch a unique movie
Emir Kusturica's Time of the gypsies (originally named: a time for a hanging)is a beautiful story right out of the Gypsey culture. With all its rough and bitter sweet tales and myths. Time of the gypsies conveys a very new point of view to the world. Its characters may not be the most likable people in everyday life, but this movie shows their reasons for acting in that manner. Where the main character lives is so wild that even the most extraordinary actions are treated as unpractical and childish. On the other hand, the most vicious and cruel actions that any human may do are valued. The hero of this movie lives in a situation which his lifestyle is chosen by others. Where corruption is praised by most of the people. That's what creates the hero's downfall, both physically and emotionally. This a must see film if you want to watch something out of ordinary.
