One Fine Day
(1996)

They don't make movies like this anymore, for good reason
I was a teen when this movie came out. I found Clooney's character obnoxious and Pfeiffer's character whiny. But they magically fall in love over a meet not-so-cute day. I suppose it was fun in the 90s to have tired stereotypes and hackneyed humour. The best part of the movie was the ending, where both characters fall asleep. Perhaps the only realistic element in the movie. The actors are great but the story is beyond boring.

Saving Mr. Banks
(2013)

The lesser-known truth behind the Mary Poppina movies
Watched Saving Mr. Banks last night - what a brilliant, moving story on the making of Mary Poppins, with stellar performances by Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell! Who would have thought that one of the most endearing stories of children's literature was based on characters from the writer's troubled childhood. A must watch for all those who have grown up reading (or watching) Mary Poppins!

The X Files
(1993)

Way ahead of its time
What I loved the most about the show was that Dana Scully was never sexualised. Ever. There was always a speculation as to whether Mulder and Scully would have an affair but that never happened on the show, breaking all tv stereotypes.

Young Sheldon
(2017)

Infinitely better than TBBT
Young Sheldon is infinitely better than The Big Bang Theory. Despite being a comedy, it has it moments of seriousness. No annoying laugh tracks. None of the sexism that is rampant in TBBT. And ALL the actors are so incredible. In fact, each new season is better than the previous one, with all the other characters getting more nuanced and interesting.

Lav Kush
(1997)

Unintentionally hilarious
My first observation while watching this movie was - Jayaprada as Sita, Jeetendra as Ram, Dara Singh as Hanuman and Arun Govil as Laxman.

Wait a minute? Arun Govil relegated to Laxman?!? After playing Ram for so long? Oh what must the poor man have done to deserve this sad fate! Arun Govil - TV Ram to filmi Laxman, whatte sad! 😂

The movie was so sad I stopped watching it halfway through. Or maybe because I was laughing so much.

Bombay Talkies
(2013)

A clever set of films, a fitting tribute to Bollywood
Sridevi helps you come out of the closet. Ranbir gives you five seconds of fame. Katrina makes you realise your dreams and Big B makes you live longer.

Bombay Talkies was one awesomely AWESOME movie. I had no clue it was all about celebrating Bollywood's centennial year - and that explained the subtle (or not so subtle) references to Raja Harishchandra and Satyajit Ray.

Oh and there is also an ostrich named Anjali in this movie. And a very clever attempt at showing the plight of (the much persecuted) UP bhaiyyas in Mumbai.

This is intelligent cinema, so don't leave your brains at home.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
(2017)

Wow
What a movie! What nuance! Please, please watch it. This movie reminded me so much of how I felt when I watched 'Crash' 15 years ago...

Poltergeist
(1982)

Scares me even now
Despite it bein an old movie with really cheesy special effects, this movie still scares me to death.

Jerry Maguire
(1996)

You had me at hello
A 35 yr old at the peak of his career has an attack of "guilty conscience" and starts to wonder if he is really making a difference. He starts his own company and is immediately wracked with self-doubt but chugs along despite feeling like such a failure. But one woman stands by him and truly believes in what he does. He marries her out of respect for her loyalty, perhaps also for fear of loneliness, but is still unsure of himself. It's only when he experiences his first win and is dying to share his happiness with her he realises how truly valuable she is, and feels more confident in himself. Does that make him a narcissistic wimp who desperately needs wins in his life to feel good, or is he a character who is finally coming of age? I'm still wondering...

Hotel Transylvania
(2012)

From the maker of Dexter's Lab
If you're a Genndy Tartakovsky or Adam Sandler fan, or like me, a fan of both - go see Hotel Transylvania! And if you do not know who Genndy Tartakovsky is - you are stupid, you are stupid, and don't forjet, you are stupid!

Thithi
(2015)

The 'actors' are not actors!
It's no easy task to make a movie where none of the 'actors' are actors, and still end up with something entertaining. Please watch it if you haven't already!

Man of Steel
(2013)

Boring
Predictable special effects that remind you of War of the worlds, Independence Day, Avatar etc + a really ugly guy in a red cape = worst superman movie. Ever. No wonder Stan Lee did not make a cameo appearance :P

I felt it was a bad attempt to batmanize a superman story. The idea was not so bad, but way too much action for my liking :P The only part I really liked was how they did away with kryptonite altogether, offering a much more realistic explanation for his powers/weaknesses.

Piper
(2016)

Too cute
Why are animated baby birds so darn cute? #Piper #OscarWinner Watch this 5 min film while sipping your chai, it is so adorable!

Sigappu Rojakkal
(1978)

Tamil cinema at its finest
The movie's sound and special effects may seem tacky compared to movies today - but the script, direction and stellar acting make the movie as creepy as it was in 1978.

The plot, the character sketches and techniques used were new and unusual for its time. The concept of a boy being abused by women challenges gender stereotypes. There is minimal dialogue, and hardly any gore - but still so creepy and full of suspense. Some parts are woefully sexist though - the whole "women in mini skirts deserve to die" thought - but it was the 70s i guess...

The black cat however, made me laugh! It's the only thing about the movie that is silly. Still, kudos to Kamal, Sridevi (only 15 at the time) and Ilayaraja for making Tamil cinema so awesome, and everlasting.

Forrest Gump
(1994)

Magic realism that never gets old
I have watched this movie so many times, but noticed something only now. Whoever Forrest crosses paths with, ends up dying an unnatural death. The only one who lives a long, happy life is Lt. Dan, who was supposed to die.

Each time I watch it, a new perspective blows my mind! It's one of those movies....

The Godfather
(1972)

Art imitates life
This movie had actual mobster families involved in several movie decisions, such as removing "mafia" and "cosa nostra" from the script, as well as supplying the actors who played Luca Brasi and Johnny Fontane.

Dunkirk
(2017)

A must watch for many reasons
Perhaps it's high time we had a war story that told the tale of the youngest, most inexperienced, nameless soldier.

Of a story where civilians display as much heroism as the soldiers they are rescuing.

Perhaps Harry Styles' performance will make people stop dissing the talent of boys from boy bands.

Perhaps it takes only an incredibly talented actor like Tom Hardy to show emotion through his eyes alone (it's the only part of his face you see in much of the movie)

Go watch it. Twice. But try not to compare this piece of fiction with the facts. Watch it for its cinematic brilliance.

Ship of Theseus
(2012)

An intelligent movie on an important topic
What an amazing movie! I'm not able to stop thinking about it or the questions it raises on the notions of philosophy and existence. But what is the significance of the movie poster? Not able to figure that one out.

I don't want to reveal spoilers so will simply say - watch it if you enjoy intelligent or parallel cinema

Mary Poppins
(1964)

It never gets old
'Mary Poppins' is one of my favoritest childhood movies! I last saw it 15 to 20 years ago and on watching it again as a 30 something adult, I am really enjoying all the nuances (and wit) I never quite got as a kid! It is especially more enjoyable after watching 'Saving Mr. Banks.'

So to all those who have not seen the movie since they growed up, please watch it again!

(Yes I just invented "growed up" and "favouritest" because it's great to be a child)

Wake Up Sid
(2009)

Dumb as hell
Wake up Sid should have been called 'Wake up Sid's parents'. And a woman who does not have a proper job at 27, and lives alone for exactly 2 weeks is apparently 'independent'. Poor Sid. Typical Indian parents will spoil their children and then give them hell for being spoilt.

Please watch this movie to understand how not to be a parent, and how to be a whiny, annoying woman who is supposedly carefree and independent.

Oh Schucks ..... It's Schuster!
(1989)

Racism is not funny
I'm not South African. But while visiting, I tuned in to a local SA tv channel and saw this movie. It is a set of candid camera sketches made in the 80s that supposedly "pokes fun" at racial stereotypes. I found most of the skits rude and disturbing, and am not sure why the local telly station chooses to air it in this day. I saw some of Schuster's more recent work on Youtube and found it in poor taste. Maybe it is the kind of humour South Africans (all races) enjoy - but whatever the case, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Gandhi
(1982)

It never gets old
Despite having watched the movie a gazillion times, I never noticed that Daniel Day Lewis has a teeny tiny role as a racist Afrikaner and that Alok Nath also has a small role as a young freedom fighter. I swear, I never get tired of this movie! I'm yet to see another movie on Gandhi that was this good. And it makes me happy that a Gujurati Bori got to play the Mahatma. True to his belief of love and respect for all.

Dope
(2015)

Representation matters
This movie is dope! A nerdy, black kid who dreams of getting into Harvard gets trapped (rather unwittingly) as a drug peddler and has to use his wits to get out of his bad situation. Watch it!

And yes, the temptation to stereotype has been nicely avoided, even though the story seems rather stereotyped.

Ek Doctor Ki Maut
(1990)

Based on India's first test tube doctor
Starring Pankaj Kapoor, Shabana Azmi and a young Irfan Khan, this movie is loosely based on Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay who created the world's second and India's first child using in-vitro fertilisation.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay was harassed by the state government, and not allowed to share his achievements with the international scientific community. Dejected, he committed suicide on 19 June 1981. (From wikipedia)

It was a terrible case of "wrong place, wrong time" for Dr. Mukhopadhyay. The country wanted a solution for population control, and here he was with a solution for fertility. The movie, however, ends on a slightly optimistic note. Wish they had not sugar coated it.

My Cousin Vinny
(1992)

A comedy that is also extremely realistic in it's depiction of trials
Another great movie from my childhood that had a strong female character, who rightly deserved an Oscar for it! So many movies and tv shows made in the 90s had strong women characters, even if they weren't the main characters (Jurassic Park, X Files etc). As per Wikipedia, this movie comes closest to depicting an actual US trial than most American movies.
