(2016)

Farhadi's Best since About Elly
The Salesman is Asghar Farhadi's 7th Feature film and the 4th in which he reunites with Taraneh Alidoosti.

The film centers around a married couple who are in middle of preparation for their adaptation of Death of a Salesman for stage. The film begins with this couple having to evacuate their apartment due to excavations happening next door. They're forced to look for a new apartment and they managed to do so through their friend played by Babak Karimi...and that's all you need to know about the plot because I feel like giving away more would diminish what this film is trying to achieve.

I feel like The Salesman follows a similar formula to About Elly . It's expertly written and it managed to hook me from the very first scene all the way to the last. The viewer is not presented with the central issue of the film from the get-go (unlike a Separation), but rather the film follows normal day-to-day life of the characters and that creates a sense of anticipation in the viewer. That feeling of anticipation in About Elly made it so special for me and Farhadi follows the same formula here again.

I was never a huge fan of A Separation and I've always considered the massively underrated About Elly as Farhadi's best film , but If you've seen and enjoyed either of those films, then The Salesman is for you.

This is probably the most mature and well crafted Film from Farhadi so far. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

Oh and It's probably worth noting that the film received a standing ovation at my theater.

Need for Speed
(2014)

Predictable
Need for speed is exactly what you imagine it would be: a visually beautiful sequence of scenes with some absurd driving and driving-related events.

Although it stays true to the game, in most cases, some scenes are little out of possibility and humorous (Not in a good way).

The film tries to convey a sense of seriousness and importance in what the characters are trying to achieve, but it fails. Nevertheless, visually, it is stunning. The director has managed to capture some amazing shots that leave you in awe of both the beauty of the cars and the beauty of landscape.

Overall, Aaron Paul's film is nothing but average.

Lost in Translation
(2003)

Should have seen it sooner
Lost in translation is the story of two people who are stuck. At first glance, it appears that our two characters have a comfortable, rich life; but as the story progresses, we see that they lack the spark in their life.

Scarlet Johansson puts up the performance of her life. Never before have I seen her act in such a delicate and touching way. Her emotions and her expressions are spot on during the whole film and she portrays a likable, smart, sexy character.

Bill Murray is Bill Murray. He brings a fantastic comical side the story; one that's funny and sad at the same time. His performance is fantastic as always and draws the viewer into the character.

The film begins with a really odd shot: Scarlet Johansson's ass. I personally thought it was delightful and its quite a nice surprises for the beginning of the film. All throughout the film, we see really nice shots of Tokyo and its landscape and the people.

The language barrier that the characters of the story feel can be felt and seen by the viewers as well, so it gives that since of reality that we're really submerged in Tokyo's environment with the other characters. SJ's character is newly married and has moved to Tokyo with her husband who is a photographer. The issue here is that her husband is a work- orientated person. Therefore SJ is feeling lonely in a city where she does not know anybody and has trouble communicating because of the language barrier. BM's character is a famous Hollywood actor who is in Tokyo to shoot a whiskey Ad and get paid 2 Million dollars. But with all his fame and money, he still seems stuck and bored. It's an enjoyment to watch these two people find each other and start to connect and build a relationship. You better agree that it's an enjoyment, because that is pretty much all that happens in the film. The movie has a slow pace and all we get to see is this two people building a relationship. You might think to yourself: "that's the most boring plot ever created" and you could be right, but I personally found a delight to watch and I can honestly say this is the one and only romantic movie that I truly enjoyed. Fantastic directing combined with fantastic directing gives you a 5 star film.

Under the Dome
(2013)

A Disappointing Result
So terrible I don't even know where to start.

As a book reader, I always imagined this book to make a great show. I believe it has the potential to make a powerful mini series . it has the character depth and the suspense. it has love and humor. its the perfect package.

Under the Dome is not suppose to be about the Dome or where it came from as much as what happens after the dome is down. The best aspect of the story is how people act when they're trapped and they know they can't get out. how quickly those people and characters change in order to save themselves or control others. to portray that aspect of the story, you need to the right characters with the right details. this show has none.

The show has transformed the plot so much that it is obvious it is going in a complete different direction. the show cannot be called an 'adaptation' because nothing has BEEN 'adapted'. Every single detail is contrary to the book and what the ACTUAL story was.

The show characters are strange and unlovable. There doesn't seem to be much explanation to why some characters act the way the do. and that is all because of not staying true to the book.

We know that some level of deviation from the book plot is understandable and needed for producing the show. but to completely transform and change a story line, is utter injustice and wrong. and since most of the people who actually end up watching the show are the book readers, I can't say most of us will be happy.

A disappointing result.

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang
(2012)

An informative Documentary
A very good movie for a all technology lovers and certainly all of the Minecraft fans (such as myself) will enjoy this film.

We get to learn about the Minecraft creators and their story and how they got here. did they really expect this amount of love and attraction around the game or not.

one interesting point of this movie was Notch. I personally could not believe how humble and normal he was. as he said himself , he makes games of the sake of games and because it is what he enjoys doing.

he decided to create 'Mojan'. because Minecraft was getting too big and a company to represent was needed. we see how that happens, and what people are hired to help expand the game.

Notch was able to create a game in his spare time and went on and became one of the greatest and most popular games ever made. and the fact that people can't decide between Minecraft and super Mario shows that. I'd personally pick Minecraft.

the movie shows how Minecraft takes a role in education. and how kids (and adults) can learn to create things using Minecraft. that was quite interesting for me because I was not aware that this was happening.

we also get to see amazing maps and locations that has been created by users and feel all the love and excitement around the game. A great film if you are a Minecraft fan; or just a fan of being creative! 8/10

Argo
(2012)

Argo : Political…Just Political.
This movie was so horrible that I can't even begin to describe it.

First, I'm going to break it down in 2 sections: the technical part and the historical aspect.

The Story was a mess and cliché. Such stories have been done so many times that 2 minutes within the movie you are able to guess every event and turnover that the story is going to take: An Unknown CIA agent who has troubles with his wife and family goes on a dangerous, life threatening mission to save the lives of Americans. In the process, he disobeys a direct order, accomplishes the mission, comes back home and gets a medal for it. And he is reunited with his family. And everyone lives happily ever after. The end.

That's the movie, summed up. And I can bet everyone can agree that it's a cliché and overdone story.

Other aspect is the historical aspect. I'm from Iran myself (but I don't live there now) so I know exactly what went down. Let me start by saying that the movie in fact IS a true story but it's not the WHOLE truth. They managed to "forget" some important notes that I'm sure lots of people noticed but chose to ignore it because of all the undeserved hype around the movie. First thing is that the U.S government could give up the Shah at any time and got the hostages back in a moment's notice. But they didn't. Why? Didn't the lives of 60 US citizens outweigh the life of a dictator who needed to be brought to justice? This was never mentioned. Secondly, the Canadians role; it's very popular among the people to call that mission "Canadian Caper". The Canadians had a HUGE role in this process. In fact they had the main role. They were the ones who issued REAL Canadian passports, they were the ones who arranged the flights and coordinated people within Iran. But we see their role cut down substantially to just the mere presents of the Canadian Ambassador. Thirdly, the movie fails to mention that the attack on the US embassy in Tehran was a result of decades of the US interference in Iran's politics and decision making; All the way from appointing prime ministers to staging coups. That's what drove the people to that point, and the film, once again fails to mention that. The film goes on to do what a typical Hollywood "true story" does. Dramatize actual events and make it into a Hollywood film. and a typical Hollywood ending scene (which never happened in real)

Once again, horrible, horrible movie.

Rating 4/10 : Only for the visual effects and production design which was adequate.

TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away from Keyboard
(2013)

Must see for CopyRight lovers.
Excellent film. This is one film that took very long to make and was long expected. it gives you an excellent overview to what Piratebay is and what is its vision and mission ( although if you are a internet user, its highly unlikely that you are not already familiar with TPB)

we get to go around on the journey with 3 people who have the most influence on PirateBay and see the story and their troubles from their view points, not based on the lies that's being spread in the media. I personally had a immediate attachment to these people and I respect their work.

We get to see how far corporate giants in Hollywood will go to bring down these who are essentially creating buzz for them. Hollywood does not realize that the file sharing sites such as TPB does not damage their companies but rather by sharing the files online, they create an unwanted "buzz" that eventually leads to more profits for the companies. this point is very well shown in the film.

one interesting aspect is that you can see how the US ( mainly Hollywood) companies try to bully these guys off their ground. as if they also have such power in other lands. it is really sickening.

10/10. recommended to everyone.

Zero Dark Thirty
(2012)

Reality and Fiction; a little bit of both.
I've been waiting for this film since Bin Laden was killed on May 1st,2011 and it was only a matter of time before it was ready.

Let me give you a quick advice. If you're a fan of Kathryn Bigelow's work, you will most likely love this film. if not then there is a very big chance you wont.

Kathryn Bigelow took on a big challenge. making a film about a story like this takes great effort. but in my opinion she was able to pull it off. she managed to show the events that lead to the killing of Osama Bin Laden in most natural way. there are many scenes of integration and torture which is what really happened but she did not shy away from that for the sake of politics.

The best and the worst thing about the film is the take down scene. its the best mostly because of how the house was made. and the location. it is perfect. very similar to the real place. the worst aspect of the scene, is its slowness. you don't feel the importance of the mission. it just feels like another random take down.

of course we cannot omit the performance of Jessica Chastain which earned her another Oscar nomination. although she was very good in her role, I don't believe it was as good as a Oscar nomination. there was times during the film that she just seemed...dull.

you should head into watching this movie without any political bias. just watching for the sake of the story. not who really was behind 9/11 and all those sorts of story that's circling in the media.

Overall, good movie. but that's all it is. a movie

PS: James Gandolfini's role as Leon Panetta ( Director of CIA) was really good. looked just like him.

Skyfall
(2012)

Pretty Good!
I live in the UAE and the movie was released here today for some very fortunate reasons and i managed to watch it.

First of all, it is quite different from your regular bond movie. there is certainly a lot more drama. it also have a quite personal story. even bond's past is looked at a bit. about his parents and where he grow up. I personally liked that. It gives him more of a human look. rather than just a killing machine.

Second thing i want to talk about is the acting. I am now completely convinced that Javier Bardem is a genius. if I had any doubts before, now they're gone. he was amazing. easily one of the best villains on Bond. also I think Daniel Craig's performance as James Bond was the best one so far. he did really well. Sam Mendez's directing was a pure beauty. loved it. I recommend this to everyone. even if you have never watched a Bond movie. cheers.

The Tree of Life
(2011)

Terrence's Best Yet
The Tree of Life

Okay, right of the Bat here; the tree of life is not the average film. It was meant for a limited group of audience and only that group will appreciate and understand it. Others, who cannot comprehend the film, intend to abuse the whole process. With that in mind:

The Movie starts off with a simple question for the audience: Are you a man of faith , or a man of science? But not practically with those words. It points it out that there 2 ways in this world: the way of grace and the way of natural. While watching the film, you will automatically answer this in your mind. Even if you don't wish too.

Before watching the film, some might think that Brad Pitt and the Cast are the main part of the film. But to my opinion, the whole world is. it asks us the most well known , frequent questions. What is the purpose of an event? Such as passing away of the elder son of a family. If there is a God, why does he allow such a thing? After this is where the film takes off, and Terrence Malick tries to answer these questions In the way he knows best. Bear in mind that if you did not enjoy ( or understand) Terrence Malick's previous films, then you will not appreciate this film and might as well not bother with watching.

Me personally have watched the film 5 times already, and there is still some gaps for me. But I am a kind of person who enjoys movies that let you decide exactly what it meant. That's the beauty of it. Because it has unlimited meanings. For that it could have a different meaning for every individual.

So, once again, if you don't enjoy such films, don't bother. Because you will end up like hundreds of others who did not understand and their best response was to abuse the film.

Rating: 9/10

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1
(2011)

Bill Condon saves !!
I really had bad hopes ,going into watching this movie. when I watched Eclipse , I promised myself Never again. But under new circumstance, had to watch this. So lets get to the point. I really don't understand why everyone is saying that this was worse part out of the series. Eclipse was much much worse.

The starting is slow , as usual. they spend too much time on the wedding and honeymoon , which makes sense because the book is split into 2 parts , therefore there is not much materiel to work with. This was the biggest mistake. Producers decided they wanted to make more money and risked screwing the movie which they almost accomplished.

another thing was the acting , awful and cliché as ever. Kristen Stewart seems to have only one expression and looks like she is in pain all the time.

BUT one thing that saved it or me was the pregnancy period which really worked well , and they were able to show Bella changing and dying to a fantastic level.

also the bloody birth scene , which lots of people say that it was similar to the scene in pulp fiction.

and the last weak point was the time between Bella "dying" and then coming back as a vampire which was way to long and stretched. just to fill up the minutes.

Final Destination 5
(2011)

Slightly Better
Well people , if you have seen the previous films there is no need for me to tell you what this movie is , because its the exact same story as always, but what made me write a review for this one and not the others is that to my opinion this was the best one so far for number of reasons:

1.There is finally a plot, people! unlike the others which had a weak and shallow plot , this one has a better one and the writing has improved by far.

2.Better casting.much better. still not a first-class cast , but no one demands a first class cast from a movie with this budget. so to my believe , with the money that was in hand they came up with a inadequate cast. but i would still say the best acting was by Tony Todd. really creepy.

3.The visuals is much better, you don't see much of that fake dying anymore. but again keep in mind that this is not a huge budget film , so that visual could be better. but you can live with it.

4.The 3D. this is something that did it for me. No matter how routine the story is if you make it entertaining(not just some none sense action) you still have a chance of people enjoying it and 3D is one of the ways that can you make this happen. Honestly i didn't have any expectation watching this in 3D, but after i realized that it was worth it.

5.The ending. this also really worked for me. We know the ending is always surprising, but this time is just slightly different. So get ready to hear lots of HOLY S***** in the theater.

6.Last but not least, is the Humor that's added to the film. there are bunch of funny lines that you didn't have before in the series, so you don't really expect it coming. a good change . but some might find it quite awkward because your dealing with death.

So for those of you who wanna see a good 3D film, or want to be grossed out a bit, or just want to spend a night watching a different movie that you usually watch with your loved ones, this would be a pretty good choice.

Overall : 6/10

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
(2011)

Transformers: Lots of loose ends.
First of all , you have to watch this film in 3D, and try to get to IMAX. THE best 3D so far, without a doubt. it was the best on IMAX as well, so if your looking for an entertaining film, this is for you !

Now, we get to the important part, Getting rid of Megan fox: big mistake. I think everyone would agree with me, this was one of the items that made the film interesting, you take that away you loose big points.

You look at this film , with this big cast like John Malkovich and Patrick Dempsey and you think that this could be something, but you can be wrong.

The story and the characters, especially the new ones, are so shallow and simple that you cant get your head around it.

plus lots of loose ends at the end, so much that i lost count during the film. not to mention too many new robots that you that you cant tell which is which !!! the only reason that you see an eight at the end of this "review" is only and only because of the 3D, especially IMAX.

Overall : 8/10

The Social Network
(2010)

Very Interesting.
I don't think i have ever had this much fun , watching a Bio movie, it usually annoying and slow. you really cant believe how much you can learn from this film, before i watched it ( and i know i'm bit late) i always thought, well how good can it be ??? its about the guy who invented Facebook, so what??

But when i was forced by my girlfriend to watch this , i realized that how much i didn't know! and not just about Facebook, but also about how hackers work,or how companies and investors are only trying to rob you off !!

By the time you get to the middle of the film, and that's when Justin Timberlake shows up, you get the real question : what is the right thing? and who do you trust? these questions might seem easy to answer at first, but don't be so sure...think again.

The lines and the script in the movie is flawless and perfect, Aaron Sorkin did a amazing job and the Oscar is the least that he can get. This was David Fincher's best film since fight club ...i can even say better then that. the way that the camera moves, the attention to detail and pretty much every thing is perfect. Now we come to my favorite part : the acting. I have to be honest i'm not a huge fan of Jesse Eisenberg, i never was , but i really really have to give him a huge credit for this film, he was fantastic truly. pretty much all of the cast did a great job. Justin Timberlake did a great job playing a jerk.

One thing that really did it for me was the Score and music, great choice of music , mixed with the talent of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is one of the strong points of the film which really brings out the story , so good job to them.

So to my personal believe , a near-perfect film. If you are a Facebook fan there is no doubt that you are gonna love it and if your not...well, you can learn a few things about how the world works. Over all : 9/10

Green Lantern
(2011)

Epic Fail
I'm not sure what was sadder in this film: the big budget that was used to make this film, or the great cast who performed terrible acting. I really felt during the film that the script and the plot was written by a cheerful 7 year-old comic book fan. The Really funny thing was that you have thousands of green lanterns who are responsible for the protection of different sectors, and who have been doing this for hundred of years, but then at the end of the film, its Hal Jordan who saves the day....all by himself!!! The movie was a sort of a combination of spider-man and Superman and The Lord Of the Rings!!! which did not work at all and seemed funny at times. The only good Points of the film were the 3D and the visual effects, which i have to admit, were fantastic. So in other words, green lantern was a cool-looking film. Nothing else. Overall : 5/10

I Am Number Four
(2011)

Worst Movie Of The Year.
They really funny thing is that how much a trailer can be different from the movie. when i saw the trailer about 2 months before the movie, i thought that this is gonna be epic...boy i was wrong !! Every single second of this movie was predictable, from the beginning scene till the end. I am not going to count this part as a spoiler, because no matter how idiot or stupid you are ( sorry for the language)you'll know that the "dog" in the movie really isn't a dog!! For me that is the worst thing for director to make a film that is so predictable that almost makes you laugh, not any laugh , but a sad laugh that means you just wasted an hour and half of your life doing NOTHING. I have no idea what the director,D.J. Caruso was thinking!! Epic Fail. 2/10 PS: the only reason i gave it a 2 was because of the acting by Timothy Olyphant.

X: First Class
(2011)

Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic
This Movie is without a doubt THE BEST X-men and THE BEST prequel EVER made!!! and i ma not just making it up as a X-men fan, every thing about this movie was perfect. The acting By James McAvoy nailed his role as Xavier. And i also believe that Jennifer Lawrence was fantastic and beautiful.oh and Kevin Bacon... what can you say for Kevin Bacon?? The man was outstanding in his role.

Until now i really wasn't a fan of Superhero films, but this really changed my mind.

One thing that i wasn't so sure of , was the absence of Logan OR Wolverine. But 10 Mins into the film i totally forgot about him.

and Again, the best prequel or possibly the best superhero film so far

Rating : 10 /10 for sure !!!!

The Rite
(2011)

Strong Point: Anthony Hopkins
I Really have No idea why most of people have reacted negatively towards this movie. I believe that The Rite was the best Exorcism Movie After the Original, The Exorcist. On the Other hand though the only thing keeping the movie interesting is in fact, Anthony Hopkins. He was NEVER let me down. he has this ability to go into the depth of the character and become HIM. I don't think anyone is as good as him in this matter.the way that he is so relaxed while playing Father Lucas is fantastic , you actually get the idea that he is a priest !! The Directing not as good as acting. Felt a bit slow in the middle. and some stuff just didn't make sense to me.But the sound editing and the visual effect was really good for a low-budget film. Beside the character of Anthony Hopkins (Father Lucas), the rest of them don't seem to have a depth and meaning to it. The reporter's character is just so plain that you sort of forget about her in the middle !! I had very low expectations when i was going to see it, but after it changed my mind. And the fact that it is based of True events makes it more interesting and realistic. So don't expect and entertaining and Full-Action film, you should expect a film that gets you thinking, because thats what it did to me. OverAll: 7.5/10

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
(2011)

A Strange Tide
I got a chance by a friend to watch this movie at the premier. And I am glad i did. On stranger Tides was just as good as the other pirates. Maybe even the best one yet.

One thing that you will Understand early in the film, is that it is very different compared to the others. at the start it may seem a bit slow, but as you go further into the film it gets better and better by the minute. Johnny Depp is as good as always. i can NOT imagine anyone else playing this Role but him, he truly nailed it as always.

A very good thing about this film is that there aren't many CG scenes, like At the world's End. it makes the films look and feel very natural. the performance by Geoffrey Rush and Penélope Cruz Are fantastic and would be very good if we see them in the future films. They are really lucky that the movie was rated PG-13. There are some mild Violence scenes which we never had in the pirates series. but I am not referring to that as a weakness. The mermaids were extremely Beautiful and nicely made, which i think was one of the best parts of the films.

On the other hand Ian McShane's performance didn't really grab me. he seemed that he hasn't fit into the role. And was not as scary and powerful as the Black Beard should be.

The Music fantastic as always by Hans Zimmer. it adds so much to the film's story and theme.

I personally Can not wait until the next one is ready. Because it will always be as good as the first one.thats whats special about this, that it Never Gets boring or Old.

Jack is Back, maybe not as powerful as ever, but with a new cast and new story and a new tide, brings a great deal of action to the series.

So this is a MUST-SEE film of the year so far. so if you have any plans for the weekend, drop them, and get to the nearest Cinema!!

Overall 9/10

Winter's Bone
(2010)

Heavy
First I have to say that i am a huge fan of the Sundance festival and last year i wasn't able to follow the process.

When i heard that Winter's Bone had won the Best Picture award at Sundance, i immediately knew that this would be a different and Heavy Movie, and boy i was right!

The Strong point of this movie was the acting. Everyone was brilliant. Jeniffer Lawrence's Blow me away. the Depth that she Brings is unimaginable. She is DARK, but at the same time loving, she is angry but she doesn't want to show it and the sense of responsibility that she has is admirable.

One thing that really bothered me was that Jeniffer Lawrence Did Not win the Oscar which she was nominated for. I think the only reason that she was beaten by Natalie Portman was that Jeniffer wasn't as famous as Natalie Portman. Just as simple as that ! Because if you want to compare the performance, Jeniffer NAILED it !!

John Hawks Plays a character that I personally think fits him beautifully. and it earned him an Oscar nomination which i agree with.

One Other interesting Element in this movie, is that you actually FEEL the Coldness. I know it sounds crazy but you do feel it. The Sound of walking on snow...the light direction..the sound editing and makeup, Everything makes you feel the cold and i think that is something really really hard to pull off.

At the end if you want to watch a movie that will keep your Mind busy for days, this would surely be a great choice.

9/10 Overall.

Fast Five
(2011)

Maybe Too Fast !!
Fast Five was exactly what I expected. Fast, lots of action and car chases.

At some point events made no sense to me. and i think maybe the reason for that is the the new characters have no depth to them.

But on the other hand if you are a fan of big car chases and explosions, you could have a lot of fun watching this.

The acting was pretty good. Van diesel was my favorite as always. If watch the trailer you will see that its pretty much the same thing in the movie. i mean all of the important scenes are in the tailer.

But this film is the best out of all of them. And it could be the best action film of the year.

Oh, and if you are going to watch it, make sure that you watch the clip after the Credits !!!

Thor
(2011)

THOR, maybe the Best Superhero in the last Decade
I Live in the UAE so luckily I was able to watch this on the world Premier and I will have to say, it was Fantastic.

I wasn't quite sure its going to be THAT good, but it lived up to my (and everyone else in the theater) expectations.

The 3D wasn't anything Special. I mean i have seen much better 3D films that were able to beat this easily.

The Acting By Chris Hemsworth and Anthony Hopkins was fantastically Beautiful. But on the other hand i didn't see anything special from Natalie Portman, who is by the way my favorite actress.

A very nice element in this movie was the Humor ( which i Did Not see it coming). there are a few funny lines that made everyone laugh, which is a good thing because you don't expect it. at least i didn't

Another strong point in this film is the directing by Kenneth Branagh. I believe this is his first Movie of this type. but he really nailed it.

Over all, if you want to be entertained by one of the best Superhero movies in the recent years, head to the Nearest Cinemas and watch it. I assure you will not be disappointed.
