The Way
(2010)

Just Beautiful.
The movie got 7.3 rating on IMDb, so I was expecting "ok movie" when the movie started. Then 123 min was passed. The GREAT 123 min of my life was unfortunately passed. Like it was 5 minutes, I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen until a whole movie's end. I was quite surprised.

The remarkable things about this movie is the scenery and how they filmed it. Beautiful views of mountains, magnificent landscape of old towns in Spain and France. Especially the old buildings in Burgos were beautifully filmed by the filmmakers. And because of that I'm pretty sure this movie makes many audience want to travel there, just like I did.

Not only about the scenery, but also the plot was decent in this film. A father lost his son tried to understand his son through the pilgrimage. Even as a not religious person, I'm Japanese, I could simply enjoyed the movie, and the main topic of the movie "true meaning of the pilgrimage" was very clear to me in the last 10 min of the film.

Do I recommend this to my friends? definitely yes! Does it worth to rent ? absolutely yes! Does it worth to purchase it? yes yes YES!!! If you want to watch some car chase and gun shooting, go rent another one. But If you want to watch a simple but decent and great movie, this is it! You can't miss it!

The Next Three Days
(2010)

It's Alright To Kill Some Drug Dealers..... in order to rescue a wise.
A husband who never believed his wise's murder charge risks everything to get her out of the jail. The movie was simply amazing. The love between a husband and a wife was described quite beautifully, it almost brought tears to my eyes when John said he believes she is innocent because he knows her. The plot was very original and very exciting, the scenes near the end is like running without stop, something happens in almost every single minute and 3 of them through the police lines in the last seconds. It would be probably hard for you to leave the screen especially when they started running in the last 30-40min.

However, I have little problems with the moral of some scene, especially where John break into the house and kills two drug dealers. I understand John was desperate enough to break some law, and it was totally understandable if he just shoot some drug dealers and take their money without killing them. My moral crisis is "Were those drug dealers really deserved to die?" Sure they are criminal, sure they are guilty of some crimes for sure. But death? I just I don't know. In addition, John killed one drug dealer and is responsible for the death of other one, doesn't it make John criminal? I understand everything happens because the justice system wrongly accused his wife as a murderer in the first place, so the justice system, police, and the true murderer is the one to be accused. But in the movie, it's like he "killed" two drug dealers in order to rescue his wife, but it's alright because they are drug dealers!!

Anyway the movie is exciting, thrilling, and heartwarming in some points with no sexual contents/not so much brutal descriptions/ no F words. You can watch the film with anybody!

Boy A
(2007)

No Answer.
The movie was just fantastic. The film maker finally created the movie about something nobody ever even tried to mention, the social rehabilitation of a murderer. It definitely got me thinking about the ethic of this situation, which is whether I should feel sympathy for Jack or not. and I still can't reach the answer.

The problem I got is I would probably take the same action as Terry, Jack's boss, and Kelly if I were them. For example, if I knew Jack is really changed and ready to back to the society, I would try my best to protect Jack like Terry. and if I'm his boss and happened to know that Jack murdered a little girl in his past, I would fire him and ask him not to come to the work place never again in order to protect the rest of the workers and company's reputation.

I'm just confused whether we should accept the "ex"-murderer to the society or not.

First, I was like "Doesn't the law forbid disclosing the identities of minors involved in crimes? and they have the rights to have a ordinary life after they come out of jail. Isn't the media which tried to reveal his identity as a "ex"-murderer the one to blame?

But more I think about the situation I came to the idea that I can't 100% believe the idea that they truly changed and will never hurt somebody again. Moreover, while a ex-con has a right to live peacefully, we also have right to live safely and eliminate those possible dangers around us.

The only answer I got for this situation is there is no correct answer or perfect ethic, and that's why I want a lot of people to watch this film.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse
(2004)

Level Of Reality.
First of all, the film is not THAT bad like all the people say, I can't say it was definitely worth to watch but it was definitely watchable. The plot, acting were fine to me, and I thought Sienna Guillory, who is the actor of Jill Valentine was freaking' hot and fit the film just fine!

However, like everybody say this film got some problem, which can be concluded as "level of reality".

The first, the Umbrella Co. shut down the big gate, which is only way to escape, and let all the residents in the Racoon City become zombies, and the government didn't even notice it? AND their cover-up for this massacre is atomic bomb!? They said they would tell the rest of the world it was explosion of the nu-clear plant, but huge amount of the residents who watched freaking zombies were already left, so what about them? capture and kill them too? if it's so, why did Umbrella Co. let the people go through the gate in the first place? that was just ludicrous.

And second, about the Nemesis, people made this film should have created him by CG because he looks absolutely stupid. The film was made in 2004 and the Nemesis looks like only he came from 1970's cheap fantasy movie. I don't know what to say, his texture of skin? that was looks so unreal and stupid I just don't understand why they could make very realistic zombies and awesome CG of Lickers, and they made Nemesis's costume which looks like made by 5 years old. that was absolutely one of the main reason a lot of people hate the film.

I can't state all of problem because its too many, but like I said in the first paragraph, the movie was not that bad, especially the plot was decent enough to watch. So go rent it! just don't buy it.

Children Underground
(2001)

Subway Children.
We all know the existence of Street children, the news keep broadcasting the footage of them constantly, and we all feel sympathy for them when we are watching it. But how long we keep that sympathy on our mind after watching those footage? couple of weeks? a day? I guess the most of us just forget about it in couple of hours because we all have own life and we all have something to do.

But this film, Children Underground, have so much impact, and got me thinking about those street children for almost a month since I watched it. The most heart breaking scene is one of the kids cut himself just because he took other kids to the wrong park by mistake, and the other kids blamed him for it. He cut himself from his guilty feeling, and that was so sad because he think that's the only way to gain his forgiveness, and what makes it worse is that the adult who are supposed to be there and teach him those stuff is not around him.

This film gave me so many "what if" I've never even thought about. What if I was born as a orphan? What if I couldn't fit in there? What if the only way to feel safe is using that paint thing? and I realized I might be just like those kids if I wasn't born to my parents.

The film have so much impact and message, and would definitely make you think about something, something strong.

The Rocker
(2008)

Despite all the criticism......
I happened to like it a lot! Sure, it has little cheesy and expect-able ending, and sure the songs A.D.D. played was not that good and definitely not for every generations. But as a choice of one of the "Friday night movies", this film is perfect!!

Rainn Wilson did a great job in this, his weird and annoying but likable style of acting definitely fit his character. And that's why I disagree with all the nonsense accusations that the Fish, main character in this film, was supposed to be done by Jack Black. WTF with those people? Every movies about rock'n roll is supposed to be done by Jack Black!? Is that what they saying? Then they are clearly out of their minds because Rain Wilson was hilarious in this, and I think I liked the movie because of him.

So if you are searching for one of the legendary movies, I won't recommend this one, but if you are searching for 102 min of simple enjoyment, this be it!!

The Devil and Daniel Johnston
(2005)

Music and Art could be crap.
I watched the movie just now, and I got to admit the movie is quite interesting. But As people in the board have been discussing over and over, it is what we usually feel after watching movie, "Do people like DJ"Daniel Johnston"s music because he has a mentally illness?" My thought about this topic is Yes, they definitely do.

First of all, I'm not quite a big fan of Lo-Fi music, but I think I have a open-mind to any sort of music and have a confidence to judge any music without slanted view. However, even considering those things, I still can't think his music is way better than the most of the lo-fi or folk-rock artists. and I totally agree with the opinion that "people like him because of his situation and Kurt Cobain's T-shirt." I'm not saying DJ doesn't has any musical talent or any sort because I believe he definitely has, what I want to say is there are much greater or more emotional artists out there in the world, and it is not fair or right that those artists doesn't get a spotlight and people like DJ got one, huge one. But I know music industry is always like this since it started in the first place, and the important thing is this film somehow made me realize it.

However only I thing I hate about the movie and DJ himself, his "Art". I have no idea about Art and I know it's not right that people like me judge the topic by my own understanding. But I'm 100% sure his art is Bulls**t and everybody thought like I did. What was it? I would totally believe if people say some kids draw that "peace of art". Does the art suddenly gain artistic value if the artist who draw it has a mentally illness? Art and Music is very similar considering those ambiguous valuation standard, I figured it out that's the reason why I like and sometime hate both of them so much.

By the way, like I said in the first the movie is simply good. You can enjoy the movie without any knowledge for lo-fi or folk rock music.

God Grew Tired of Us: The Story of Lost Boys of Sudan
(2006)

Why Do You Work So Hard?
The film is about the lives of Lost Boys after they came to U.S.A.. The most of them struggled with the life style in the unfamiliar country, but they eventually got through a tough time and tried to find the way of helping their home country, Sudan. The movie is not only touching but funny, their reaction for the life in the developed country was absolutely worth to watch. and I learned a lot of things from their way of thinking.

I assumed the film maker wanted to telll us the difficulities of the Lost Boys after they left their own country and how the situation of Sudan is bad. However the movie got me thinking the other topic, happiness. I vividly remember when one of the Lost Boys felt depressed for his life in U.S.A. and said "When I was in our country, I have a lot of time to talk to family, friends, and even stranger, and we were happy. But in here, U.S.A., everybody just work, work, work, and they don't have enough time of communication." What is the happiness is different among the people, but like he said, it is also true many people in developed country work too hard and forget why they work in the first place.

Anvil: The Story of Anvil
(2008)

Meaning of Life
The most of people in the world probably put a priority on the safey when they choose the most important aspect in their lives. "The safety for the own future" That's the life all about, isn't it? We just give up the dreams such as be a musician, dancer, or painter, and get boring "but decent" jobs in order to spent happy life in the future.

But what is the happiness anyway? Isn't it sarcastic too many people work hard and do some crappy jobs to get "happy life" and end up being "unhappy" because of their work. Isn't it better if you chase your dream and end up poor but have no regrets in your life. In this film, Anvil prove that's one of the way of living.

Chasing their dream and giving their middle finger to the safety for the future. After I watched the film it got me thinking for a while. Maybe Lips and Robb didn't get a big house and enough pension for rest of their life, and they did'nt even succeed as a band. But they've been doing what they wanted through their entire life and that's the thing we call happiness, isn't it? Anyway, the movie is just great. Everybody can enjoy the movie without knowledge for Heavy Metal History.

Someone Like You...
(2001)

The best part of this film? Trailer!
I usually put high score on the films, so 6 is pretty low score, and I'm telling you this film deserves it.

If you pick each actor/actress's works, they are just fine, they did good works. but IMHO somehow they are miscasted. Especially "the combination of the casts" is terrible in this film. For example, Keanu Reeves is a terrible actor alive on the planet, but in the film "Sweet Nobember" Keanu Reeves and Charlie Theron made a miracle, they are so good together and the combination of these two are great, so I liked that film. But in this film "Someone Like You" I didn't feel something special between Ashley Judd and Greg Kinnear or Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman. It seems to me they just did their job, so even if every single of them did a good job, a whole movie is fail.

Also it seems to me the movie is all about girl's feeling. How horrible men treat the girls, and ending of the movie is little too cheesy.

But Don't Get Me Wrong. This movie is not terrible at all, some people might even love it. This is just not my thing.

A Walk to Remember
(2002)

Pure Love.
I picked this movie as a usual Friday night movie and I didn't expect that I was gonna cry at all. But to be honest, I cried so hard. and let me warn you, this movie MADE YOU CRY OUT YOUR EYES.

If I'd describe this movie in a word, that would be "Pure". The love between Jamie and Landon was so sweet and pure, and all the beautiful scenery used in this film made their relationship look more pure and lovable. Their pure love reminded me of my young love in high school and made me realize how the relationships I'm getting into lately is messed up and not that pure anymore.

BTW, Some people might think these kind of movie is cheesy or too romantic, and I agree with those opinion, this movie could be cheesy and "try to make audience cry too hard" kind of movie, but still, considering those aspects of this movie, I'm telling you this film is absolutely worth to watch.

Great scenery, great music, great cast, and great storyline. What else do you need? just watch it!!

Shaun of the Dead
(2004)

One of the great zombie movies.
Smashing the zombie's head, running over a bunch of zombies, and piercing a zombie by iron bar. If those things happen in horror movie, I would be terrified. But in this film "Shaun of the Dead"? Those things become absolutely hilarious.

The movie was very funny and it's safe to say it was worth to watch. Just one thing I was little confused is the movie contained some sad scenes which never turned into funny occasion. I expected a whole movie is just comedy and nothing more, so I thought it might be better if they just eliminated the sad scenes.

Anyway, if you are looking for some grade B horror movies, go rent the other movies, this is not you are expecting. But if you are looking for great zombie movie, this movie will be it. Rent it today!!

Before Sunset
(2004)

Only if you watched After Sunrise.
Before you read this, you must know I'm saying all of the stuff under the circumstance that I DIDN'T WATCH AFTER SUNRISE.

To be honest, I couldn't enjoy the movie at all. I seems to me this movie was all about just two people who happen to meet after 9 years of separation and have some conversations about their life which is not so interesting for other people.

Perphaps you might say Ethan Hawke's acting was very realistic in this movie and actually some part of me admit it, but at the same time it seems to me his acting was so awkward in very bad way, and as quite many people mentioned he looks absolutely terrible in this film.

Nevertheless, considering a bunch of people praise the movie and only a few put negative comments, it might be just because I'm an amateur movie fan who couldn't enjoy the movie and catch the true meaning or beauty of the story yet. Therefore, I'm not gonna say it's a bad movie, I just suggest you to watch After Sunrise before you watch Before Sunset.

Good Will Hunting
(1997)

You say Minnie Driver is ugly, and I say you should go to a hospital.
After I watched the movie, I thought the message board of IMDb is already filled with the comments that how Minnie Driver is naturally beautiful or how her acting in this movie was fantastic. But, WTF? everybody put the negative comments about her or how ugly she is, and some people even said that she was totally miscasted. IMO, I seriously doubt that she was miscasted. Although I admit she is not the most beautiful woman in the world, she is incredibly beautiful in a very natural way, and I'm sure that the none of the Hollywood actresses could have gave a performance like she did in this film. It's little sad that the most of people only care about actresses' looks.

Anyway, the movie was just great as I expected. Every single actor/actress did a great job in the film, and I still can't believe Mat and Ben wrote a whole script of the movie. It seems to me that the best part of this movie might be Minnie Driver's acting, her lovable character was definitely one of the kind, and I might be disappointed if they used a typical Hollywood actress instead of her.

Is it worth to watch this movie? Yes, abso-freaking-lutely Yes!

Eastern Promises
(2007)

Viggo Mortensen nailed it!
The movie was amazing. They describe the way of Russian Mafia specificlly and beautifully, and I couldn't help thinking how much time the they spent for the research. Besides their amazing research for Russian mafia, what made this movie so special is absolutely Viggo Mortensen's acting. I've watched his acting in some movies such as "The Road" or "A History of Violence" and I didn't even care about him at all, but this time his acting definitely got my attention.

Although the movie contains some violence scenes that kids definitely should not watch, those scene are not big part of movie, so you can just look away a few minutes during the scenes of violent if you are not a big fan of them.

To sum up, if you are going to watch this with your kids, you probably shouldn't. However if you are old enough to watch the bloody scenes of violence, you shouldn't miss the movie.

Brick
(2005)

One of a kind.
The movie was just fantastic. The actors/actresses are all good, and the story line was definitely unique and interesting. If the movie is defined, it probably would be "Amateur detective movie" or "High school detective movie", and whichever it is, one thing for sure is I've never watched the movie like this before.

Although I felt weird when I found out that all drug dealers in the movie look not so scary or drug dealer-ish, it made the story more realistic and made me realize how many Hollywood movies I've watched described the drug dealer as climinal-ish.

The movie is absolutely worth to watch despite the fact that they use too many unfamiliar slangs that I couldn't understand without checking my dictionary. However, considering the fact that English is not my first language, it's not that big deal for you if you're a native English speaker.

Finally, if you are wondering watching this movie, go rent it!! I guarantee that you're not gonna regret it.

and just one thing, is it only me felt The Pin looks stupid through the movie?

The Town
(2010)

Blake Lively as a hooker? Seriously?
I just finished watching this movie, and it was simply worth to watch. The movie was not just crime movie, it contained some human drama, and shooting the movie from view point of the criminals definitely made the movie one of a kind.

Despite the fact that most of people probably think the best part of the movie is the human drama, my best part of this movie is the exciting gun fights. The machine guns were basically used in the movie, and for me who was getting bored with the recent movies' dull hand gun fight all of the gun fight in this movie was definitely worth to watch.

However, I have a reason to put 7 on this movie, which is Blake Lively. I'm not one of the haters of her at all, I even like her and her acting, and I'm not gonna criticize her performance here. But she plays a hooker? Come on, even if she had a heavy make up, still she is too hot to be a hooker, don't you think? I know it totally depends on person's taste in women, but it seems to me she is even way hotter than the heroine in the movie! Anyway, if you want to see super awesome gun fight, I definitely recommend this movie to you!

Despicable Me
(2010)

Michael "Gru" Scott
Before I watched this movie, I didn't expected to cry at all because I thought it's just one of the kids movie, and I was pretty confident that I'm not gonna cry for those cheesy stuffs. However, the movie had definitely me in tears, and I laughed a lot too.

Although I couldn't understand what the yellow creature is till end, by the way Gru said they are his cousin, they are so weird and cute!! and you don't care whatever it is if it's just lovable, do you?

One thing I couldn't be satisfied about this movie is Steve Carell's voice reminded me of Michael Scott too much, and I couldn't focused on his character. I guess this is just my problem because I'm so addicted to the TV show "The Office", so if you are not a big fan of that TV show, I guarantee you can enjoy the movie very much with or without your kids!
