Van Helsing
(2004)

Who needs story when you've got CGI!.....Van Helsing does.
Stephen Sommers delivers the same old storyless, no brainer action film that I've come to expect from him (See The Mummy, Mummy Returns).

Another CGI world with no substance or emotion that is populated by people who talk in cheesy one liners that are supposed to be funny (Bruce Campbell one liners = funny, Kate Beckensale = WHY?). I will admit that it kept me entertained enough to keep me in the cinema until the end (a feat a few of the audience at my screening didn't manage) But this is purely because i like monster movies and I was sure they'd be a big wrestling battle at the end (And I Can be quite stubborn when I've paid £10).

On a plus point the CGI, although overused was of a high standard. And the action, although meaningless was slightly entertaining. Unfortunatley all this means nothing when you don't give a damn about the characters.

A note to Mr Stephen Sommers. Next time you get $170million dollars to spend on a movie use some of that money to develop a story, & if you've got time maybe even write a script! Youll find all the cool CGI you like is even more effective when it has a reason to be in a film.

I have to congratulate the people behind the marketing of this film as they've done an incredible job selling it to the public.

I was fooled into parting with my money!

Hulk
(2003)

Great...until the end
At first I was really enjoying Ang Lee's HULK. The Comic book style & split screens were excellent. The CGI Hulk was incredible. I even cared for Bruce thanks to the excellent build up to when he first gets angry...ROARRRR!

Then Suddenly...POP..The Hulk bubble bursts and there is some weird blob/Energy/Fight/Mind power mess of a final battle which for me ruined everything. On a second viewing where I expected this to happen I wasn't so disappointed so id advise all people to view it a few times just to see the few moments of Ang Lee brilliance that are in this flick.

I'm giving it 7/10 for the fact that up until the final scene I was enthralled by this movie (with a different end it would have got an 8)

The Big Lebowski
(1998)

White Russian anyone?
This film is one of those little gems that on the very odd occasion will come along to remind us that film can be quirky, intelligent, and off the wall without turning into pretentious art house rubbish.

Top quality writing and direction really gets the best out of an already great cast. Brilliant sub plots all interweave to create a wonderfully oddball world which is close enough to ours that we can still relate to the characters, thus drawing us into the film and entertaining us at the same time. The Dude is...well, a dude.

White Russians are officially the coolest drink.

8/10

Event Horizon
(1997)

Sci-Fi Shock sensation
Its not the best film I've seen yet this was the best experience I've had in a cinema. After getting lost & sh*t scared driving around dark English country lanes I arrived at the cinema already in quite a state. And from the moment I heard the rocking Orbital opening track I was transfixed. I was in the perfect mood to watch this film and it delivered more than I could have hoped in a cinema experience. After repeated home viewings it does lose its shock factor yet it is still a great film, though I have to add it really was meant for the big screen. The sets are great, the gore is shocking & the ship design is truly beautiful. Admittedly the Event Horizon borrowed its look from '2001' yet they took that long majestic shape & gave it a more modern gritty feel. A few bits of ham acting (listen to when Richardson says "the hulls been breached") didn't detract from this excellent Hellraiser Vs 2001 style flic. Watch it with the lights off and the sound up.

10/10 for the Cinema experience.

8.5/10 as a complete film

28 Days Later...
(2002)

my expectations were met....well almost
I waited in anticipation for this movie after seeing the brilliant, comic style posters and a few publicity shots of a deserted London.

My expectations were high, and for once my expectations were met.well almost

The opening scene of a baron & silent London is one of the most disturbing pieces of film I have watched. Anyone who has visited these landmarks will understand how these shots leave the viewer experiencing the fear and confusion the characters are going through. And I know the idea has been used before but, the plot of a virus wiping out humanity couldn't have come at a more poignant time with talk of chemical weapons & virus attacks making the headlines. The story starts to evolve into a wonderful Sci-Fi thriller until they get to the Army Blockade and this is the point were the film Losses itself, luckily only for a short time. The arrival of the Army seems to herald the arrival of a whole new film. Now I love the way it progresses from an apocalyptic Sci-Fi flic to Action horror, yet I can see why many people find the jump in plot a bit hard to swallow. The energy & pace of the 2nd half is completely different to the 1st and this sudden change although crucial to the story is hard for the viewer to comprehend. A lot of reviewers have also commented on how shooting with digital video gives a cheap feel to the picture but look carefully at how beautiful the giant drops of rain look when the main character starts his fight back, Im sure you'll agree it only enhances the feel of a dark, desolate world.

The change in tempo is the only set back of the film, but I really can't see how else the story could have been moved on. The acting is excellent, the soundtrack is great and I still havent got over the shot of the upturned bus out of my head. 9/10

Also get this on DVD as the deleted scenes are excellent.

Bug Buster
(1998)

Wow.....a lesson for us all
What an incredible film. Incredible in the fact that the Cast & Crew have admitted they made it, and that it actually got released. Thankfully it did and a copy made it to a local news agent in east London and was then purchased by a friend of mine (5 DVD's for £10 or some other offer) The joy I had watching this was like scratching the soles of my feet, it tickles & irritates & annoy's yet at the same time it relieves them and i want to do it more..argh!!! The acting IS the worst i've ever seen (I watch a lot of rubbish movies) the script is just as bad & Randy Quaid deserves an Oscar for the worst performance by a 'trained' actor. I loved the use of Star Trek old timers, there performances just add to the badness of the whole production. This is a perfect example that the saying 'its so bad its good' isnt always true. Plan 9 fitted into this catogory yet this film seems too knowledgable of its own badness to pull it off. After saying all this bad stuff i must admit I havent laughed so much for years. I advise all people into film to watch this as an example of how bad films can be & how much we should appreciate it when a decently scripted, acted & directed film hits the silver screen......think i might watch it again after all this talk...i need a good laugh.....1/10 (although 10/10 for being such a freak of a film) P.S. Many thanks to my so called mate for lending me this pile of.....

Godzilla
(1998)

Just sit back and enjoy, its not supposed to be shakespeare
Its a story of a giant radioactive lizard and nothing more. Sit back and enjoy the visuals and the awesome, ear splitting sound.

I wanted to see a loud, brash, in yer face monster movie and i came out of the cinema feeling pleasently satisfied. Loved the opening titles and the clawed, beached tanker.

ROARRRRRRR 7/10

Blade
(1998)

Dark, Dangerous & Pure Fun
If you like horror or action watch this film ASAP. If the opening scene doesn't get your adrenaline pumping then someone should check your pulse. Great Action, excellent casting and top one-liners. This is the only film I have seen in a cinema where the crowd applauded each chop, kick & punch thrown. Not perfection but who cares when films can be this much fun. Its a pure rush of dark comic book action. 9/10

The Sword and the Sorcerer
(1982)

Scared me when i was 7
It wasnt until this year that I managed to track down this film that I saw late one Saturday night on BBC1 when i was 7 years old. My sister was a very liberal babysitter and i sat shaking in fear at the demon resurrection.........scary stuff...well it was an 18 certificate... Im so glad my memories were vivid enough to draw me to this wonderful piece of fantasy film, when i saw the DVD at £6.99 i had to buy it. Admittedly the acting isn't great (and it seems to get worse during the film...do you think they started rushing it to get there pay quicker?),and the effects have dated but what other film has a three bladed sword??..Think how heavy it would be considering that a one bladed weapon would be a struggle for most people to swing with any accuracy. AMAZING. Mostly because of the memories i give it 8/10

Dont you just wish the sequel got made.....
