Baywatch
(2017)

Slow mo the only thing going for this dud
Who wrote the expletive filled script? A 15 Yr old boy high on something? Appalling language throughout, teenage style sex jokes, just embarrassingly awful, the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is for the slow mo scenes which are plain funny and the beach scenes, makes me realise how much better Australian beaches are.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold
(2019)

D-D-D-D-D Dora!
Good family movie. Laugh out loud moments, kid humour, especially in the quicksand, all your normal jungle dangers to keep you on edge. Stupid songs but funny. Just well acted good fun entertainment

Agatha and the Truth of Murder
(2018)

Cashing in on the Christie name
Rather like a story from a Girls Own Annual, a very unbelievable plot. Came across as an attempt to cash in on Christie's name by making her the central character in a rather mediocre mystery. No wonder the Christie family weren't happy. A major fault is the laughable tick the right boxes for the current generation approach: we need someone from the LGBQ etc category, I know we'll make Florence Nightingales goddaughter a lesbian, tick We need men to be portrayed as pretty hopeless, racist and awful, tick. We need to portray women as the strong characters, tick. Let's make a character who's turned their back on God because He's responsible for all the bad stuff humans do, tick. I was waiting for some environmental statement, but no, maybe there's a 2nd movie planned where Agatha solves a crime and saves the planet. Oh, and despite its inappropriateness for the time period and mixed setting, let's toss the F word in somewhere. Laughable. But absolutely loved seeing Mrs Brittas playing a nurse and maid, I fully expected her to take a secret tipple in the wardrobe.

Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan
(2019)

Brilliant war/anti-war film.
Shows respect to the young men sent into a hellish situation from which many never fully recovered. It makes you cry out at the wasted lives and unnecessary deaths all because the North wanted to force Communism on the South. Bullying at its worst. Also shows the need sometimes to say "no" to superior officers (and other people in positions of power who use their power unwisely). However unsure if this bit is accurate or just used to help the story along. How brave those soldiers at Long Tan and all of Vietnam were and how poorly treated on their return home. But they were fighting a virtually unwinnable war in a jungle covered land where the enemy was indistinguishable from those you were trying to help. Best War film I've watched to make you feel you're there with them

The Birds
(1963)

For the Birds!
I remember reading the novel and being really scared. But when the movie came out in '63 I was so disappointed and thought it was silly. Tonight I decided to give it another go, it was even worse than I remembered. Did Hitchcock dislike women, think they were utter idiots? The lack of dialogue is unbelievable and very stilted when they do finally speak, the only character who seems any way normal and able to act is Rod Taylor. The women and young girl just stand around, doing and saying stupid stuff, acting pathetic. As women aren't like this in real life I think Hitchcock must have had mother issues somewhere in his life. Not a classic but a lesson in how not to direct.

The 700 Club
(1966)

Love the testimonies
Not actually worth a 10 but so much anti Christian hate going on in reviews I thought I'd try and give some balance. I actually don't agree with all the theology but the reason i YouTube to watch, are people's stories of answered prayer etc. Just wonderfully inspiring.

Captain Marvel
(2019)

Good comic book stuff for kids.
This is the most comic book Marvel movie I've seen to date, the sort of comic I used to read in the 50s and 60s, the ones written for kids. Good story line, lots of good action but overall too shallow. Captain Marvel just doesn't have the depth, goodness etc of say Wonder Woman. She just didn't engage me at all as a character to admire which was disappointing as I like a good female heroine. Also found the music somewhat ponderous, as it is was meant for some real drama and not a light hearted comic flick. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

Studio 10
(2013)

Regressive "progressives" airing their ignorance
Would have kept ignoring the program as have mostly found it pretty vacuous, but accidentally caught the anti Marmite piece this morning. People are sure entitled to their opinions on Marmite vs Promite vs vegemite etc. But dear, always biased Joe, had to liken vegemite to Jesus and Marmite to Satan, knowing full well that the manufacturers of Marmite are a Christian company. That's about the level of discussion on this program. In summary it's a stream of advertising occasionally interrupted by often inane, biased discussion and if there's a conservative view on something they nearly always take the opposite stance.

The Public
(2018)

The good, the bad and...
I went in wanting to really enjoy this movie and there was a lot to love. I've been a librarian for years and the crazy questions you get asked, the variety of people you deal with, the wonderful love of books, the library as a sanctuary were all well done. However, unsatisfactory holes in the plot and other glitches made it uneven viewing. The most annoying one was when the news broadcaster was asking the librarian why? and instead of just telling her what was going on he obscurely quotes from Steinbeck. What the heck? The lack of really talking to the police, the lack of negotiating by the negotiator, the absurdity of heavily armed police being sent for, the absurdly evil DA, just spoilt the overall story. But the ending was a good laugh and the movie did highlight the desperate plight of the homeless and mentally ill.

The Red Sea Diving Resort
(2019)

Good Movie
Good movie based on a true story of rescuing Ethiopian Jews in the 80s. I never knew this inspiring story before watching and am utterly blown away by the men and women who facilitated these rescues and also the bravery of the refugees themselves. Inspiring tense movie.

The Great Hack
(2019)

Too biased and already dated
Couldn't see this one through as had such a left wing bias. After watching the recent senate questioning of Google reps and hearing whistleblowers admit the anti Conservative bias, this doco was totally missing that balance. A worthwhile doco should be fair and balanced. Leave politics out if you want to achieve accuracy, give us the facts man, just the facts. But a good summarisation of the basic Cambridge analytica data mining.

Layover
(2012)

Don't insult young females
I don't know any girls on the planet who would fall for the idea of being flown overseas to be in a modelling contest and not be suspicious when they are LOCKED in a filthy old building!! Who wrote this rubbish??? My advice is don't drink or do drugs when you're writing scripts and at least give your characters some level of intelligence, it makes them slightly more believable.

Mary Poppins Returns
(2018)

This Mary is more like the book.
Have finally caught up with this and enjoyed it thoroughly. The only reason I've not scored it higher is for the song in the Music Hall, too sleazy for Mary Poppins and a flatness and wordiness of some of the other songs. But others were light hearted and catchy and beautifully done. I never liked the Mary Poppins books, she lied and was way too weird. I enjoyed the Julie Andrews/Disney version, much more likeable. Emily Blunt based her Mary much more on the book but happily also managed to make her more likeable. I just wish someone would help Disney song writers realise that people enjoy good melodies and don't need loooong songs that are too wordy. Plus when doing a movie for children keep it clean and good. The sleaziness of that 1 particular song was so out of step with Mary and the whole tone of her story.

Outsiders
(2016)

Good news info and surprisingly often with a good sense of humour
The 3 musketeers do a great job of following current issues without the left wing bias all our other Australian channels News suffer from. The recent story of Antifa seriously attacking Andy Ngo was aired on Outsiders in seriously good time. Outsiders is like a breath of fresh air after the Stepford Wives/CNN news approach of ABC, SBS, 10, 9 and 7. They may sometimes be a little rough round the edges but their honest, balanced reporting shines through.

Yesterday
(2019)

All you need is love!
Basically a love story with a background track of Beatles music and it worked wonderfully!!! Well played by everyone and well written, the whole premise being such a hoot. My guess is it won't down well with American audiences because of the over-the-top lady manager. But who cares, good stories always need a villain. Good entertaining fun

Zulu
(1964)

Wonderful to see on the big screen again
I saw this when I was about 13 and was gobsmacked. Today it was on at the local theatre as part of a classic movie event and I was again gobsmacked at how good it still is. The chants or singing of the zulus, the courage of both sides, the incredible scenery and, as for many, the wonderful scene of the competing voices, Men of Harlech vs the Zulus chanting, is the standout for me. So many reviews have already highlighted what is good about this film so I can only add my encouragement to see it, if possible on a large movie theatre screen. My one gripe is the anti-Christian and highly inaccurate portrayal of the Witts, a shame the directors used this method to contrast the bravery of the soldiers and Zulus. Otherwise I'd give this a resounding 10.

Father Brown: The Passing Bell
(2019)
Episode 2, Season 7

Puleeeese!
Have spent some time googling the works of Rachel and Tahsin, the writers and developers of this series and think I finally understand why we are getting such a non-Father Brown masquerading as the real thing. The "mixed cloth" words coming from FB's mouth were a dead give away as to the writers leanings and lack of Biblical knowledge. They are deliberately choosing to portray a man of God as supportive of a lifestyle that he would not have supported. Shame on them. I just wish the Chesterton estate could sue them for misrepresentation. The 3 is for the scenery and costumes, both are wonderful.

Living the Change: Inspiring Stories for a Sustainable Future
(2018)

OK doco
Depressing beginning as it emphasises the very terminal nature of the way the world is currently using resources. But the emphasis on individuals taking local action which makes up the bulk of the film is very good. My one quibble is that most of the people focused on have way more land than the average Joe Bloggs. It would have been good to see one average household block being used in a permacultural way.

The Least of These: The Graham Staines Story
(2019)

Forgiveness and love in action.
I remember the shocking headline news when Graham Staines and his 2 young boys were so barbarically attacked. That anyone could hate other humans so much as to burn them alive, especially 2 young kids was unbelievable. We've since seen that barbarity repeated ad nauseum by Isis but it doesn't lessen the impact of this story, it is very well told. The way its seen through the eyes of an antagonistic journalist goes some way to helping us better understand the mentality behind the attack. So many moving scenes and at the heart of the story ordinary people who loved and served other people extraordinarily because of God's love for them. On a movie level the acting was very good and the Indian setting, scenery etc was brilliant. My one minor quibble is the accents. To an Australian they just didn't ring true. Stephen Baldwin didn't do too badly but Gladys and the boys were clearly American. A bit more time with a voice coach or use Australian actors??? But a very minor issue. , it's very much a movie that will inspire and encourage us all to live like Jesus and love all his children. Do go and see it.

Mirror Mirror
(2012)

Who was it's audience?
Not suitable for kids, painful for adults, maybe some teen or tweenie? It was so mindless with a script that high school kids could have whipped up on a rainy afternoon. And the stupid feminist slant, boring! The final song in the wedding scene summed up the whole movie, a load of silly rubbish. If my kids had whipped this I would have found it fun but as a movie story it missed the mark so widely.

Swimming with Men
(2018)

A good laugh
Watched this in a small indie theatre, everyone was laughing and enjoying, even clapped at the end. Do yourself a favour and go and see. People have been comparing it to the Full Monty, this was better, just good clean fun. Only disappointing thing was the failure of the big movie chains to carry this. All the actors were good but Rob Brydon a stand out, he played the mid life crisis guy to perfection. More of this type of movie please.

Hotel Mumbai
(2018)

Courage in action
I wish everyone over 18 had to watch this movie, it reveals so well the insanity of extremism of any sort. The NZ mosque massacre has just taken place with a young man brutally taking lives for no sane reason; Hotel Mumbai shows other young men equally senselessly attacking and mercilessly butchering every and any one they meet on their assignment to kill. What impressed me was the courage of individuals highlighted in the movie. The chef and other staff who stayed behind, risking their own lives to help hotel guests survive and the utter bravery of the ill-equipped policemen who ventured in to try and prevent further murders. Bravo to the filmmakers, actors and all involved in highlighting yet another instance of the goodness of people even when faced with the utter worst of humanity, a hint, don't google what happened to the bestial man who engineered this massacre and in a great display of cowardice stayed behind in Pakistan while sending these ill educated, brain washed young men to their deaths, it'll only depress you.

Crazy Rich Asians
(2018)

A Rubbish Movie
Please don't waste your time; this lacked charm of any sort. It was not only full of tasteless characters who made me want to vote Socialist Party for the first time ever but just generally was not funny, not clever, just like eating way too much dessert with no balance in the meal. There were no like-able characters at all, the plot was predictable and in no way inventive or clever. I'm giving it 4 stars because the Singapore scenery was nice. PS am not voting low because of anti-Asian sentiments, am married to someone of Asian background, this was just a sad sad waste of money and talent.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
(2019)

Emmet the awesome Superhero.
Just watched this with my 2 grandchildren plus another child. Adults and kids alike had a good laugh throughout and some kids walked out of the cinema singing This Song is Gonna Stuck Inside Your Head, laughing madly. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It entertained with zero cringe or worry about inappropriate content for kids. I even stayed for the credits, how could we walk out while such an hilarious song about the credits being the best part was playing? I just wished I could have immediately re-watched it for all the quick jokes and shout-outs that I laughed at and by the end of the movie had forgotten. I was slightly worried when the Queen started her first musical number, thinking it was an out of place bit of musical rubbish but no, it all redeemed itself and was just a wonderful part of an hilarious, very clever look at childhood, siblings, and all our favourite Lego and DC characters. For goodness sake ignore the negative reviews this was wonderfully good entertainment for the whole family.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
(2018)

Mama mia what were they thinking?
What an awful, vacuous waste of film or whatever they use now. I am so very glad I didn't waste any money going to see this at the movies but instead waited until it was on DVD. I ended up fast forwarding quite a bit, it was just so appallingly awful. I can't bear going into details, the sooner it's erased from my brain cells the better, if so far you have managed to miss this one, be very very grateful. I groaned at the opening scene of the graduation at Oxford and was still groaning at the end. The plot was awful, the characters totally unlikable; if I'd been depressed when watching this I'd be suicidal at the end. Is this what life is really about for some people, is this inanity the heady heights they attain to? I'm giving 1 star for the Abba music, although this movie has started to put me off it, 1 star for the beautiful scenery/settings and 1 star for the horse.
