Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
(2020)

I Have Never Seen Eurovision but loved this film
Many of the very positive reviews have been from fans of Eurovision. Even if you, like me, know nothing of Eurovision, this movie is a light and fluffy delight. There are many laughs in this film as well as a touching story and a few amazing songs including Husavik. This is a tonic for much that ails us during these challenging times. This is in my top 10 films that I have seen in the past year.

Victoria & Abdul
(2017)

Lovely Movie
This is a wonderful period drama full of whimsy and fun but based on several serious themes. It touches on with colonialism, racism, class distinctions and agism but all with a light touch and a hint of humour. Marvelous acting by all the cast. Beuatifully shot and it moves right along. It kept me entertained and enchanted from beginning to end.

Interstellar
(2014)

Brilliant, moving, entertaining
I watched this movie again today for the third time. I loved it. So well written, directed and acted that it really makes you feel you are there. Matthew McC is the best he has ever been in this role as are many of the stellar cast. The story builds slowly and is complicated which makes it even better on the second and subsequent viewings. The effects are brilliant. All in all a superb piece of filmmaking and entertainment. Kudos to everyone involved.

Charming Film
I saw this film last night at the Open World Toronto Film Festival. It is a lovely story, well acted and well shot. If you have the chance to see it, please do.

Gemini Man
(2019)

Beautiful and great stunts but...
The story and the dialogue seemed contrived, wooden and predictable. In the end I did not care much about any of the characters. I usually like Will Smith but this one just did not work for me.

Zombieland: Double Tap
(2019)

Lots of Laughs, Awesome Action and Acting
I really surprisingly enjoyed this one, would like to give it an 8.5 so I gave it a 9. Woody and Jesse were great throughout, the ladies were also awesome. The story zoomed along with lots of little twists and turns. The different vehicles and weapons and even shoes were all entertaining but the main fun was the characters interacting with each other and with the various types of zombies, watch out for "Homer" DOHHHH!

No Impact Man: The Documentary
(2009)

Nice story
I thought this was made more recently than 2009. Makes me want to google Colin and see what has happened since.

The movie itself is quite honest and relatable. Colin is the butt of many jokes including some of his friends. The relation between Colin and Michelle seems strained at times, she wants to be part of the team but he is pretty extreme while remaining quite nice.

Some of the stuff they do makes a lot of sense but no electricity except for one solar power unit, a bit extreme. I like the idea of zero garbage but man you have to work hard for it these days, almost everything is in a package or wrapping. The worm box bit was really funny. The candles actually seemed really nice but not very practical, romantic, not great for reading. The small plot for veggies was great and interesting that even that guy was critical of Colin.

I enjoyed this a lot and strongly recommend. Especially for anyone who wants to reduce their impact on the planet.

Time Flew By
This is a great film, it made me laugh, it made me think, it surprised me continuously. All the actors are consistently real and interesting. The story line progresses nicely and then hits with a number of surprises that I did not expect. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and do not want to say more that might give away any of the interesting twists that occur. It has been well reviewed by many and should do well in the theaters.

Jojo Rabbit
(2019)

Hilarious and Touching
Saw this after it won Peoples Choice award at TIFF. One of the perks for being a TIFF volunteer, a great deal of fun (volunteering at TIFF and this movie). I loved Sam Rockwell, Taika Waititi, the 2 young male leads and the whole story. It had me laughing from the beginning. It also contains a great message, we are all human and have real value. It had great pacing and was thoroughly entertaining. Congrats to everyone involved in this great project.

All the Money in the World
(2017)

Semi-hidden gem, Better than I remember
I watched this for the second, or third, time and really enjoyed it. The cast were uniformly excellent. The story is interesting and feels real. Since I have become and actor 2 years ago and met many famous people, I realize that they are very different from us. Being the richest, smartest, most beautiful or whatever adds a whole different dimension to a life. I cannot agree with the choices Mr. Getty made but I can begin to think I understand. Although I could not relate well to the son or grandson, Michelle Williams character connected with me. There are a few inconsistencies but it is clear throughout that she loves her son, and her other children, and would do anything for them.. This is a semi-hidden gem.

Wayne
(2019)

Great, Great Show
I actually did one day as an extra on this show in the Episode 9 scene in the bus station. Although I did not make it into the final cut, I loved the show.

Why did an old guy like a show about two mid-teens, you may well ask. 1. The story is really interesting and the characters all seem surprisingly genuine, even though they are mostly on the extreme end of one spectrum or another. 2. There is real tension in the show, you really expect anyone could die at anytime. 3. Some of the characters are quite relatable, at least in some of their beliefs and actions. For example, I can really identify with Wayne and his dad's strong sense of justice and fairness. 4. The music is pretty awesome. 5. The sound is very good and even with the thick Bawstun accents, I could understand almost all the dialogue. 6. There is a lot of action and violence but it does not seem overly gratuitous. You can almost believe that some of this really happened. 7. The chemistry between Wayne and many of the other characters, especially Del, is really amazing. 8. The story lines all move along nicely, except for one twist near the end of season one. I won't give it away but I could not figure out any plausible way it could happen.

9. I love free and Youtube Premium is giving us one month free. Thanks Youtube Premium, thanks cast and crew of Wayne and thanks for reading. cheers, Jim

Life Itself
(2014)

Sad but gratifying
I started watching this and almost could not continue. I found the pictures of Roger after his surgery to be quite upsetting. Seeing his lower jaw hanging open with no teeth, or even a lower jaw was disturbing but it was worth it getting past that.

This is another great movie that many people have not seen or even heard of, a hidden gem. It tells the amazing story of Roger's life, his successes, his demons, his challenging relationship with Gene Siskel and his amazing wife who he married later in life. The scenes with his wife and grandchildren are especially touching. This is a film of great joy and hope. Life is tough, but love will help us through.

The Rider
(2017)

Great Movie
I give The Rider an 8.5, not quite a nine so I rounded down. This is a very personal story about life, loss and perseverance. Brady has a severe head injury from a riding incident where he got bucked off and his head was stomped. He is living with his father who is a tough character with a few vices that lead to further problems for Brady. He also lives with his younger sister who is developmentally delayed but very strong willed, like all of the family. He also has an older brother who broke his back/neck riding and is semi-paralyzed.

Brady's family and friends are all really well developed characters and the film feels like a documentary, but better.

This is a great hidden gem and if you get the chance to see it, then see it.

Small Town Crime
(2017)

Engaging, Entertaining and Excellent
Since I got into the film industry a year ago, I have watched a lot of movies. I especially enjoy finding and unheralded gem, which this film is. I started out disliking the lead character, a self-pitying, loser, alcoholic with no hope for redemption. It was great how the film brought me around, slowly, to actually like this character. The story is interesting and does not reveal where it is going. This may be why some reviews give it a low score. The characters are well done and multi-dimensional. I really liked this film and think that people who liked Arlington Road, LA Confidential and the Usual Suspects will really enjoy it.

Hochelaga, Terre des Âmes
(2017)

Surprisingly Entertaining
As you can tell by my rating, I loved this movie. It was well shot, well acted and engrossing from beginning to end. It starts off a bit slow and dark after a battle in around 1200. It then goes back and forth between present day and several different time periods at the same crucial location. I wondered if it was based on a true story. or several true stories. The characters are mostly relatable but because there are so many characters, the relations you develop with them may not be that deep.

The 15:17 to Paris
(2018)

Mixed Feelings
First I want to thank tldavis-39958 for your review, if not for your review I would have probably stopped watching after 10 or 15 minutes.

Clint, what happened, did someone else make the first 80 minutes of this film? It wanders around and slowly develops the characters but seems not to have much focus.

Clint, congrats on the final 15 minutes, just amazing. If the whole movie would have been better focused I would give a much higher rating.

15 minutes of awesome that brought tears to my eyes. The other 80 minutes, meh!

(2018)

Amazing, disturbing and wonderful
I saw this film at TIFF and it was my first film of the 2018 festival. There may be spoilers after the next paragraph.

The film details the horrific attacks in Norway by Anders Behring Breivik. The acting is uniformly excellent. The movie goes along at a good pace. Very intense at the beginning with the explosion and then the attack on the island.

SPOILERS

Breivik acts very cleverly in getting onto the island where the high school youth leadership program is happening by pretending to be a police officer. He also persuades the program director to call all the youth together so that he can brief them. This feels a little contrived but real enough that someone could be tricked in this way. The uncertainty of not knowing what is going on back in Oslo other than the fact that a bomb went off near the PM's office would make it plausible.

The fact that the security director becomes suspicious is also plausible and seemed very real and the starting point for the murders was shocking but expected.

When the students start running and trying to find a place to hide made the island feel tiny and claustrophobic. The action was very realistic but not overdone. The calculated manner that Breivik followed his victims and murdered them was again very shocking.

The second act with the initial arrest and pre-trial action showed Breivik to have carefully and cleverly thought out his actions from beginning to end. The explosions, shootings, surrender, his manifesto, choice of lawyer all seemed well planned. I do not know if Breivik was as intelligent, cool and collected as portrayed in the film but he was consistent in his actions throughout the film.

The reactions of the survivors, parents and friends seemed real too. I won't say more about this as I do not want to give the whole film away.

I really enjoyed this film and do not understand why the ratings by the public are so low. I may read some of the other reviews to see. It may have been the violence, the flashbacks and the coldly calculated actions by Breivik were hard to watch for may people but the violence is a bit less than many films like Saving Private Ryan. I hope this film does well at the box office and that people will think about some of the messages that the far right is promoting right now.

Powerful and Balanced film
Wow! I saw this at TIFF yesterday and even though I knew some of the story it really hit me. The cast were not known to me but were uniformly excellent. The movie starts with a bang and keeps going hard for half an hour. I was glad it slowed down a little. The emotions of the characters were well portrayed and seemed genuine, even Breivik seemed like he had some validity in his comments if not his actions. The actor who played Breivik did a particularly great job in this very demanding role.

two thumbs up from me.

Molly's Game
(2017)

Brilliant!!!
I never give 10s, this is my first but I fell totally, completely in love with Jessica Chastain as Molly Bloom. If she is at TIFF this year I would love to give her a hug.

This movie had me from the opening. A brilliant young woman who is a great athlete and has a very demanding father suffers a serious ski accident. I had scoliosis surgery when I was 16 so I could identify with the young Molly who also recovered from scoliosis surgery.

The story is both entertaining and engrossing as Molly struggles to keep her life together while running a high stakes poker game. Idris Elba, Kevin Costner and the rest of the cast are also award worthy. Including Graham Green who is great in his role.

The cinematography, writing and directing are all brilliant. Maybe this movie just hit me at the right time but I enjoyed every moment.

TEN!!!!

True Romance
(1993)

I loved this film
Two leads are amazing as is the supporting cast. The story really moves along and is very sexy and violent. I will probably watch this one again in a few years. Patricia Arquette was a revelation . I especially enjoyed the scene with Gandolfini and Arquette. All good.

Churchill
(2017)

Brilliant
I intentionally did not read other reviews prior to writing. I found the characters and the story very engaging. The story is well known but the way it is told is interesting and moves along nicely. The actors are excellent, the sound and picture quality is excellent. I really enjoyed this film.

Heaven's Gate
(1980)

Languid
This movie proceeds very slowly, it could have been shortened by an hour. That said, the story and acting are very good. The sound not so much. Isabelle Huppert, Kristofferson, Jeff Bridges and the rest of the cast are amazing.

Jungle
(2017)

Great Movie
I read a few of the other reviews and felt encouraged to write a review.

I loved the story and the characters were very well done. The guide was the hardest to figure out. The three adventurers were like a lot of people who are trying to find themselves and maybe, the meaning of their lives. When I was in my teens, twenties or thirties I would have loved to go on an adventure like this. Maybe not quite so extreme. The lure of the mountains and seeing something totally new is a strong pull for some people.

The story has a few twists and turns that I did not expect and was interesting throughout.

I strongly recommend that you watch this:

1. If you love nature, 2. If you love adventure, 3. If you love a great movie with interesting characters.

cheers

American Made
(2017)

I did not want to like this film
Tom Cruise is amazing, the story is excellent, well paced and always interesting. I did not want to like this film but loved it. Tom plays Barry Seal and I think he perfectly captures the essence of a devil-may care guy who gets an opportunity that is "too good to be true". He leaps before he looks too deeply into the implications and ends up somewhere he never imagined.

At first I did not care much about Barry and his wife and kids but gradually, surprisingly, I did. Congratulations to everyone involved in this wonderful movie. It has more depth and heart than most movies and is a great story as well.

Sand Castle
(2017)

Well paced, well acted, thought provoking
For me, this movie was great in a number of ways. The movie showed the complexity of the war and the various parties to it. The main characters are well developed and multi-dimensional, their motivations seem real and understandable.

Matt Ocre joined the reserves to pay for college and ends up fighting in Iraq. Matt initially wants no part of the war and breaks his own hand to try and get sent home. Gradually he comes to really believe the Americans can make a difference for the civilians. Even after several setbacks Matt believes in the mission of fixing the water system so the locals can have water again.

It would be really hard fighting an enemy where the innocent bystanders look just like the enemy. The action scenes seemed realistic in that the Americans were not invincible warriors and suffered losses even with their superior weapons and body armour. The war was hard on everyone but particularly hard on the innocent civilians who were caught between the Americans and the enemy.
