Doo gae-eui dal
(2012)

Unusual and well-crafted ghost story. Worth watching for fans of the genre.
Two Moons starts out with Seok Ho (Kim Ji Seok), an unemployed graduate, waking up in a dark room. Soon after, he discovers schoolgirl, Jeong (Park Jin Joo), and horror/mystery writer, So Hee (Park Han Byul), with him. They find out that they're in a shed and nobody has a recollection of how they got there. Going outside, they see a house where they went in hoping to find answers. Instead, all they got were more questions and something more.

Looking at the first part of the film, I was not expecting much, especially in terms of originality. But like a couple of Korean horror movies have done before, they left me pleasantly surprised.

The movie is like one big puzzle piece where clues are given to you in tidbits throughout. This is not the usual cliché-ridden vengeful ghost story, and the pace, although a bit slow, still has enough bite to keep you interested until the end.

There are a few suspenseful moments that helped build up its creepiness factor, and the overall feel was well done, so that when the climax came, you're happy to still be alive. This film would not sit on the throne of any memorable horror film list, but it will probably manage to latch on to the tail end of it, nevertheless.

In summary, this is a slow-moving yet well-crafted ghost story with little bloodshed. It makes you think about what will happen next without leaving you too confused. Not recommended for those who likes some action with buckets of blood, but this is something not to be missed for fans of ghost movies.

(2012)

Nothing spectacular, but enjoyable, nevertheless.
True, the film is not original in its concept, but anything that's original is a rarity these days.

I think any idea, no matter how clichéd, if done correctly, is worth watching; and I do believe this movie is one such. Nothing that would curl your toes under your blankets, but there were some creepy moments that made the movie enjoyable.

The story is not complicated nor deep, and the ghost per se did not make too much of an appearance, which I found a pity. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this little film and would recommend it to people who wouldn't like anything too horror "heavy".

Minimum amount of blood, no gore. Acting was the usual, lots of shrilly screams and blank stares, but acceptable.

They had me at hello.
If you're a true horror movie fan, then you'll appreciate this comedy show which oozes references to numerous horror movies, and has some horror celebrity guests.

It's from Adam Green, director of Hatchet I and II; and Joe Lynch, director of Wrong Turn 2 -- they play themselves as struggling horror directors. The way they make fun of everything, including themselves, is hilarious and refreshing. It might seem like so much cliché to the untrained, non-horror fan, but it's actually done on purpose and is much more than that.

The supporting casts are gems in their own right and equally funny and outrageous. They make silly, the new sexy, so to speak.

All in all, it's great cheesy fun. Something I haven't seen in comedy shows for a long time. I look forward to many more episodes of this and would definitely recommend this to friends.

Family Demons
(2009)

Story is okay, but it's not a horror film.
I agree that the message being sent across is very important, BUT I don't think this is a horror movie. In my opinion, it's more of a drama slash suspense film.

Cinematography/Film quality: It's obviously low-budget and will look like it all throughout. Nothing outstanding in this aspect and the location is pretty much the same, but it's acceptable and better than some I've seen before.

Actors: The lead actress is good. She looks really neurotic, though I thought there was too much heavy breathing on her part, that I was actually afraid she'd pass out. The supporting cast was good too, considering it's a movie lacking any financial backing.

Story: I didn't find the story as amazing as what I've read in the first three reviews. Yeah, it is watchable, but nothing original and nothing that would really stand out. It comes across as borderline amateurish, but I still enjoyed the ending, which I thought made watching the movie worth it.

The girl did not look abused, unless they were going for the verbal kind. The chain looks so thin and fragile that I had to suppress my laughter, thinking my dog could break that chain in less than a minute. There were too many loopholes in the story, I guess, but the concept is still quite adequate. ( I have this propensity of not passing up movies involving ghosts. )

There is some blood, no gore or nudity. It's not fast-paced nor thrillingly suspenseful. It would probably make a number of people yawn, but if you're the patient kind, you'll probably survive through this.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
(2007)

Sensitive and beautiful, but not for everyone.
As this film already has more than a hundred reviews, I will not expound much about it. I would rather share with you my experience and my perception regarding the story.

True, this film is a work of art, as many here has already exclaimed. The cinematography alone would move a sensitive soul. As with all works of art, even the most beautiful and revered masterpiece will not appeal to everyone. Watching a movie, like looking at an art piece, is all a matter of taste. This film is no different.

The story is not fast-paced, it's not action-packed, nor would bullets be flying around in every scene. Jesse James will not show any fancy gun moves nor will he kill a thousand men. What you will see isn't about Jesse Jame's "exciting" life. It's about his death and how it came about in the hands of Robert Ford.

I believe this story would appeal more to the person who can appreciate a slow building up of a plot, and who won't yawn at the absence of death and destruction. Kind of like the person who wants to know how a thing came to be, rather than what it can do. If you're like this, then you will be able to appreciate the movie for what it is. If not, it would be best if you skip it. An appreciation of a finished work is not solely about intelligence, it's a sensitivity for such things.

If you can see the beauty of this film, however, it is a nice experience. Not mind-blowing, no. I doubt it would move you to tears, but it will be enough to make you sigh in the end.

Movie is recommended, but not for everyone.

The Bay
(2012)

This movie would probably make you think twice about what's in your water.
I'm not a huge fan of "found footage" films, but I liked this one.

BUT not every horror/thriller fan will like this film, so if your cup of tea is more of a shock and awe or an adrenaline pumping, blood gushing, gore spewing kind; you maaaaay want to skip this one.

What IS this movie? I'm not going to go into the storyline detailing, since a lot of reviews are already doing that. Instead, I'll tell you what kind of movie it is, in my own amateurish opinion.

This movie will appeal to the type of audience who likes to try new spins of old concepts. The movie does not have a lot of action, and it only has a bit of blood and gore, but it has its own charm. In the sense that it makes you think about possibilities, in general.

Granted, I thought it missed a lot of opportunities for scares, it still came out good and a convincing sample of FF. Maybe they didn't want to go for the "cheap scares" approach, which I have to admire them for, but the story did lack some substance. Still, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to friends.

Citadel
(2012)

If you can forgive Tommy, you can watch the movie in its entirety.
Honestly, I love the whole concept and the story. The thing I found so difficult to watch was the main character, Tommy Cowley. Granted he's agoraphobic, but I'm a bit irritated with such weak characters, especially when they're men. So you'd better have a lot of patience for Tommy's constant cringing if you want to finish the film.

In a nutshell, I thought the decisions the main character made were all short of idiotic, but then again, maybe it's attributed to his "condition". It didn't hamper the fact that the cinematography was quite good, the atmosphere--excellent, and the acting convincing. The spin of the story was also very interesting and I liked that they added an element of supernatural in it.

The pace of the movie is a bit slow, but I thought that worked quite well for the film. There's not much action involved, but I thought the ending was quite good. I still don't regret watching the film and would recommend it.

Bad Moon Rising
(2010)

Excellent short film
Excellent little short film and the werewolf transformation was very good. I would have liked a little more gunfire and fight from the interrogators, but hey, I'm not complaining. It was a nice quick ride for me.

The atmosphere and cinematic quality were great. There wasn't a minute of any B-movie feel. The actors, though not as phenomenal as some I've seen on short or low-budget films, were convincing enough for their roles. I would not have minded if this were made into a full-length feature.

Recommend watching this.

El páramo
(2011)

Acting that can shame a lot of Hollywood stars.
As with the first two reviews, I have to agree that there were no weak acting here. Every single one of them were marvelous. The cinematography and especially the atmosphere were very effective and notable.

However, I would not classify this as a horror movie. I'm inclined to say that this is more of a suspense/drama.

Admittedly, the director was extremely talented in building up the tension, though it is quite tiring to always have that accumulate inside you without having any form of release as nothing of significance really happens. Granted, that he wasn't going for cheap thrills, which I can respect, but a movie gets anti-climactic fast, even with superb actors and atmosphere, if it's not going anywhere.

This would have been great for a short film, but made into a full length movie, it became a bit diluted. Still, I did not regret watching this for the positive points already mentioned above. Those were so good, it salvaged the entire film.

Rites of Spring
(2011)

Not for picky viewers.
If Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) and The Creeper (Jeepers Creepers) were to have a baby, Wormface would be the result. It's a low-budget slasher/creature movie that didn't knock my socks off, but didn't leave me gagging either...Well, not too much.

If you're not too anal retentive about your horror movies, the film in itself is not as bad as the others I've seen where I wanted to pour bleach in my eyes after seeing the first 5 minutes, sometimes less. You just have to understand that this movie is not up to par with the great horror classics. It's unoriginal, cliché-ridden and there are numerous flaws as you go along.

However, the actors are good and the cinematography is not bad either. Their shots of the corn field reminded me of Husk, which is an excellent film, by the way. The ending would probably leave you scratching your head, thinking WTF just happened. There are some loose ends left in the story that attempted to add some mystery, but failed.

In short, it's like an appetizer film that would be good to watch on a lazy night. It's watchable, if your expectations are not that high.

Kakashi
(2001)

I feel like I got fooled by the positive reviews.
I love a good horror or thriller, no matter how long and dragging the dialogues, but this is not one of those. It's more of a drama with one of the most irritating protagonist I've had the misfortune to come across. Seriously, I wanted to slap the beejeezus out of her. But if you like squeaky, fickle-minded women who consistently makes bad decisions and runs like a lame chicken, you have a winner here.

I was initially excited by the movie concept. Scarecrows are one of my top choices when it comes to horror "monsters", for lack of a better word. Early on, I caught the plot of the entire movie and the probable spin they'll make in the end. I thought it was nice, nostalgic even, since it reminded me a bit of Pet Sematary. Sadly, the movie did not rise to its full potential, but fell flat on its face with a loud thud.

It was like they couldn't decide which direction to go, long-haired ghost woman or scarecrow zombies...in the end, it fell short on both.

If you really want to believe the positive reviews, go ahead, but it would be wise that you don't spend hard-earned money on this. You just might bang your head on the wall right after.

The Corridor
(2010)

I'm giving the 6th positive review. :D
This movie is more of an acquired taste, than anything else. You'll either love it for its refreshing take on this genre or hate it for making you feel left out.

The other reviews pretty much covered everything, so I'll make this short and simple: The story requires your undivided attention. If you miss a second of it, you may not "get" what it's all about.

The actors are actually very good. Surprised me, really, in their intensity. Their emotions were almost palpable.

My only "complaint" is that the "entity" itself had too little a role, and its appearance too subtle for cinematic effect.

Nevertheless, it's a movie I would recommend.

Urban Explorer
(2011)

I don't know about yours, but mine had English subtitles.
A lot of reviews said they gave it a lower rating than they would have because the movie did not have subtitles, but the one I watched did, so don't be put off from seeing it, since it's a film horror fans wouldn't want to miss. It reminds me a bit of Wolf Creek, except for the contrast in setting, obviously.

The male protagonist of the story would irritate you to no end on the choices he makes, but you might find yourself rooting for him, all the same. One female, the one with the camera, will make you want to push her in a ravine on one scene, because their unfortunate circumstances started due to her utter stupidity. Just had to get that off my chest. Heh.

I must say, you'd think, in the beginning of the film, that the villain would be different, but as the film progresses, it will prove you wrong. He actually surprised me by his evil-ness, although the torture scenes were not as bad as what I've seen in other gore-themed movies. And I actually liked that they toned it down a notch and didn't make it out to be like another Saw or Hostel movie. I'm not much of a fan of those, though I have seen my share.

The characters will make you go bald from pulling your hair from its roots, because you're frustrated as **** with the choices they make. It won't make you stop from sitting at the edge of your seats though. You'll be able to watch this to the end, because it's the kind of movie that compels you to do so, even if you know it might not be categorized into the same level as some of the greats.

Watch it. It's worth your time, especially for a true horror fan.

19 Doors
(2011)

I'd rather wash the dishes.
When I read the plot of this movie, I really wanted to see it, even if it didn't have any rating or review yet on this site. A writer in a reputed haunted place, that would eventually take her to the brink of insanity. Oh, yeah! After watching the first five minutes though... actually, even just hearing the first conversation, that sinking feeling will already start to form in the pit of your stomach. You know, that sensation that you feel when you realize that this will not end well for you.

There's a scene where she was standing inside a room, near the doorway, reading some papers when a ghost suddenly appeared. She gasped, dropped her papers, and calmly picked it up. Then her friend appeared in the doorway where the ghost supposedly was earlier, and she repeats the process. Meh, you'd think that if you see a ghost, you'd either scream your lungs out, throw anything you can get your hands on or your body freezes and your eyes pops out of their sockets, but you never take your eyes off the ******* ghost unless you're running, as fast as ****, away.

The acting felt like I was watching a bad high school play. The main protagonist especially, sounded like she was reading her lines. I've seen more convincing acting skills on practical jokers.

The run-down hotel was supposed to have been abandoned for some time, but when she found an Ouija board, it looked practically brand new. Even the phone she picked up didn't have a single speck of dust on it. My brother's room looks more dingy and haunted.

I like low-budget horrors, and I'm always pleased when they exceed my expectations, but this one only carried the worst badly executed horror clichés I've ever seen, so far. Some no-budget amateur short films on You Tube are a better watch than this film.

Honestly, I tried, but couldn't finish it.

Rosewood Lane
(2011)

Not as bad as most people make it out to be.
The film stars Rose McGowan who played a radio talk show psychiatrist named, Dr. Sonny Blake. After her alcoholic father's death, she decided to move back to her childhood home, but once she got back in her old neighborhood, she was immediately warned by her neighbor about the local paperboy who seemed to be a strange young sociopath with supernatural abilities. Unfortunately, the boy immediately took a special interest in her; and when he started calling her show, reciting eerie nursery rhymes, an unnerving game of cat-and-mouse begins. As the game dangerously escalated, she suddenly found herself in a terrifying all-out war, one that forced her to redefine her perception of sanity and had her fighting for her life.

This is not a movie with pails of blood pouring out or tons of gore spewing about, but I thought it was a nice mild suspense thriller that reminded me of the Twilight Zone days. If you're into stories like that, then this is definitely one you wouldn't want to miss.

This actually got a lot of negative review, but I thought it was quite nice. Something you'd love seeing on TV on a slow weekend, sort of thing. One of the many complaints made was the actor who played the antagonist and his being inappropriate to be cast as a paper boy. Granted, he doesn't look like a boy, but take into account his acting skills here, I thought he made a pretty good job on his role.

The story itself isn't perfect, and yeah, some choices the characters made were a bit questionable, but isn't that how movie people have always been? Like how they go into a room when we're screaming for them not to? All in all, I thought the actors were great and the story solid enough to see it through.

Keepsake
(2010)

Great idea, bad execution.
The movie had a lot of promise, but didn't quite deliver. I knew what the makers of this film are trying to do, but it seems like they weren't so sure on how to execute it in a way that would last for the entire length of the movie.

There were a lot of loopholes in the whole story, especially in the beginning when the girl meets the antagonist. The other victims felt like fillers, as if they didn't know what else to do. Some scenes, I felt, were unnecessary.

The actors are not going to get any awards any time soon because of this movie, but they're tolerable. The effects, sound and cinematography are surprisingly good for something that looks low-budget. The idea of the story is actually laden with a lot of potential, and I did like the twist in the end, but the coherence of it's entirety is another thing. I truly wish they have modified it more, because it would have made one helluva horror flick.

This contains a fair amount of blood and some gore. There are a few torture scenes that can be considered mild compared to movies like Hostel. Personally, I'm not a fan of torture movies, but this one was tolerable.

All in all, it's an okay movie to watch if there's nothing else. But I doubt it will be remembered five minutes after the end credits.

Cookers
(2001)

The horror was when I realized this was an awful movie.
I saw the high movie rating and read the great reviews, so I felt compelled to watch it. I've seen my share of "intelligent" psychological thrillers and such, but there was nothing of that here. Stupid, yes.

Still, I forced myself to watch the movie, thinking maybe the Meth-head characters just didn't get any sympathy with me; and with that in mind, I thought I'd give it a chance and finish the story. But in all honesty, I could not see an iota of what the positive reviews raved about.

Granted, the actors were convincing in their roles, but it takes more than that to make a good movie. It did occur to me that maybe everyone involved in this film was snorting something, hence, the awful outcome.

To cut it short and save you the hassle, I found this movie to be utter rubbish and would not recommend it to anyone--not even a Meth addict.

Abraham's Boys
(2009)

This movie made me want to know more of what comes next.
This film is about the ending of two boys' age of innocence.

In all honesty, I didn't know you can pack such emotion into fifteen minutes of film--something most full-length movies have failed to do. But I have to emphasize that the story relies on subtleties, so if you're more of a blazing fury or gory action kind of person, better skip this one.

I've also read the short narrative/book and I recommend it highly. Anyway, I'm digressing...the film is quite the little gem. You can easily feel yourself being sucked into the story and find yourself shaking your head, as if just waking up, after you realize it's been fifteen minutes and the story is over.

Actors were very adept at their roles, the story was solid and the cinematography was apt. All in all, the combination of the three made for a good short film. Nothing epic, mind you, but certainly something worth watching.

Rogue River
(2011)

Movie was average, at best.
I try not to compare films with others and just watch it based on its own merit. Having said that, I thought the film was not as bad as most reviews made it out to be. The story had potential and the actors were quite convincing in their role.

What lacked for me was the lead actress not being able to connect with the audience. I think one of the most important things that a protagonist has to do is to be able to establish some sort of rapport with the people watching the film, and this is something she failed to do with me. I thought most of her decisions were quite questionable, though I did like the ending.

On its own, the story lacked some character developments and seemed to be "hurried", as if the writer wanted to get into the "action" real quick. The result was that the suspense did not build enough to put me at the edge of my seat, so to speak. There were a lot of instances for this, but the writer and director failed to deliver on this aspect.

The cinematography is good though. Scenes were clear and the shots complimented the entire movie.

All in all, it's an okay movie to watch if there's nothing else, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to friends.

Surviving Evil
(2009)

Good Acting, Bad Script.
I grew up with the stories of the "Aswang", which is a mythical creature in Philippine folklore. (The Aswang is an inherently evil vampire-like creature and is the subject of a wide variety of myths and stories, the details of which vary greatly.) Knowing this, I was expecting a great deal from the movie.

The opening scene was fairly decent and stoked me up for what should be coming next. Unfortunately, I was sadly disappointed with too much unnecessary dialogue that made the movie a bit of a drag to watch after the first part.

To make a brief enumeration, the story had a lot of potential. I believe they could have made this into a really good horror movie since the concept of the folklore has its own charm.

All the actors had to be given credit for doing a superb job on such an obviously meager script. If they did one thing right, it's picking out the cast in this film.

Now, the background music/sound effects reminded me of Vincent Price for some reason. Which I found a bit funny since the cinematography is like watching something from the 70's. I'm thinking, it's either something deliberate for effect or just a result of having a low budget.

Things pick up, though, near the end. Unfortunately, even then, there wasn't much focus on the Aswangs and their shape-shifting prowess. This could have been precious fodder for making a great horror story and messing with viewer's minds.

Overall, it's not THAT bad, but it's not something I would watch again.

Body sob 19
(2007)

I'd skip this if I were you.
After reading the positive reviews for this movie, I watched it with high hopes. I have always liked Thai horror movies, but I have to say that this one is exceptionally disappointing.

The movie is full of obvious CGI effects, which I could have ignored if the story was good. However, all I could feel was I've wasted two hours of my life watching this to the end, hoping that the movie would somehow redeem itself from its cliché-driven plot.

On the plus side, some actors were quite good at their roles while others were worse than a flat tire.

All in all, I didn't enjoy watching this movie and would not recommend this to anyone.

The Devil's Rock
(2011)

Recommended movie.
When I first saw the low rating of this film, I had my doubts on watching it. Reading the plot summary, it seemed like a far-fetched concept that could only lead to cheesiness. I was wrong.

As was said by the other reviewer, the first thing I noticed was the solid acting performances of all the characters, be it main or supporting. The film had a good feel to it, and kept me at the edge of my seat all throughout. There were also moments of creepiness where you'd probably hold your breath, tensely waiting on what would happen next. The story was quite good and it held the film together until the very end.

All in all, this is a film I would recommend to fans of the genre. I'll definitely be adding this to my collection.

P.S.

I was honestly puzzled as to the low rating of this movie. Though I know it's not a great film, it definitely is a front runner and a notably good piece of work. Perhaps the people who gave it such a low rating wanted a gore fest or something with less...dialogue. I hope, dear reader, you won't be another sheep that just follows the opinion of the majority. Watch the film for yourself and be your own judge. It's the only way of discovering gems such as this.

Baan phii sing
(2007)

Not so good, but not so bad either.
I have been particularly fond of Asian horror movies, because most of those I've seen were based on old cultural Folklore or legends, which in my opinion are always one of the best fodders for a good film. Another common ingredient they usually contain are ghosts or spirits that are out for justice. However, in the film Baan phii sing, or The House, it was said to be "supposedly" based on true crime stories, which is another favored movie subject as it can sometimes shed new light on an otherwise closed perspective.

The movie centers on the life of a female journalist who eagerly accepted an assignment of making a documentary report about some murder cases that was very big news during its time, but has already been forgotten through the years, namely: The Nuanchawee Murder. In September 18, 1959 Nuanchawee Patchara, a nurse was strangled and drowned by a group of men. Her body was found in the Choa Praya River. Around the time of murder, she was having an affair with a married doctor, Utid Kajorndate who became a suspect. He finally confessed that he hired a group of men to kill his secret lover after she had threatened to tell his wife about their affair.

The Jarmjuree Murder. In September 28, 1999 Chalerm Songkramkrad, a medical student, murdered his girlfriend, Jarmjuree Ploysawangsri in a cold-blood manner, and then tried to discard the body by amputating the limbs and slicing his dead girlfriend into tiny pieces, after she tried to break up with him. He later confessed to the police that he did it out of jealousy.

The Dr Pusuratt Murder. In February 20, 2001 a female doctor, Pusuratt Bhungaysornpan was reported missing. The police later found pieces of human tissues which matched the DNA of hers in the central drainage at the famous hotel in Bangkok. Doctor Watson Bhungaysornpan, her husband immediately became a murder suspect with the motive, that he had wanted a divorce and start a new life with his new lover.

During the course of her investigation, she finds one common ground among the accused: They all lived, at one time during their lives, in an old house. When she went there to investigate, weird things suddenly start to happen to her and her husband as well.

While watching the first part of the movie, I was taken in by the creepiness of the house and the way the ghost seemed to appear. But it was a bit short-lived because the story unraveled in a way that I thought was dragging and unnecessary. The acting of the main character was a bit over-the-top and her fainting scenes were somehow, well, pathetic. The story had a lot of potential, but it seemed it was not realized in this movie. The film revolved on a plot that had too many implausibilities and left the viewer with more questions rather than the expected answers. Also, it failed to tie all the cases involved in a coherent continuity.

Still, I wouldn't write this off as a total failure. I have enjoyed it on some parts, and there were enough buckets of blood to rival even the slasher movies of the 80's.

Junior
(1985)

A small film with an interesting ending
In a nutshell, this movie proved to be quite a pleasant surprise. It didn't leave me applauding for it in the end, but it also did not make me feel any urge to gauge my eyes out from watching it.

I had my doubts when I first read the negative reviews about this film. Even the brief description did nothing to lift my interest either, but I still gave it a go since I like forming my own opinions on a subject.

The movie started out with two women who just got out of prison and wanted to start a new life. They ended up in a small town where they had a run-in from the local sheriff who happens to immediately form a severe dislike for the two. Despite the prejudice they encountered along the way, they rented a dilapidated marina and made it their home. Not long after, though, they started to get harassed by rednecks. One in particular was a huge man named Junior who tried to pass for a creepy psycho retard, but never quite reaches it.

There is very little blood and gore seen in the movie, but what they lacked in that department, they made up for breast exposure and bikini scenes. The acting at times bordered on silly, but there was something about the movie that wouldn't let you turn it off in spite of it. I guess one could say that this movie is so bad, it's good.

Near the end of it, when you begin to think that the movie is getting to be monotonous, it surprises you with a bit of a twist. Nothing monumental, but clever nevertheless. The ending actually turned around my opinion of the entire movie. Admittedly, even if I would agree with anyone that this would never make a list as one of the industry's iconic films, I could say with conviction that it is worth watching.
