Committed
(2000)

A movie with a lot of heart
Joline (Heather Graham) sets out after her husband Carl (Luke Wilson) who disappeared to clear his head about himself and their marriage. Joline, who is committed to their marriage starts her journey to find Carl, yet on the way discovers a lot about herself. On her trip she encounters a bountiful of interesting characters who unknowingly help her find her way.

In my eyes this is a classical road movie, which moves just at the right pace (some viewers may find it too slow). Throughout the movie it keeps its humorous note while Joline responds to the craziness of the world around her with a warm, knowing, sometimes sad smile. All actresses and actors give wonderful performances and the musical score is immaculate. 9/10

Jaws
(1975)

Wonderful Film Making
Talk about a movie that has scared the masses and which was even by the director declared as wrong. Yes, sharks rom the oceans, but no, we humans are not their preferred meal.

Still, without using special effects while concentrating on music and camera positions this movie is a masterpiece in demonstrating how to create scare without overusing the display of the predator. The real predator, actually, is the mayor, who refuses to close the beaches in order to keep business alive. And this is (hopefully) the message that Mr. Spielberg created for the U.S. If not, I am at a loss about this country

Once Upon a Time in Mexico
(2003)

Insanely Violent
I admit to not having seen Desperado and El Mariachi. When OUTIM started I expected a humurous and interesting, while gun-driven story about a disillusioned guy (the lead character) taking out his opponents while cutting a deal for himself.

What I got was constant display of violence that was way too realistic to be passed off as just to give the audience a little jolt, and I perceived the tongue-in-cheek humour used during these scenes as very inappropriate. Is it really necessary to shoot away the bad guy's knees and add funny sounds when he keels over? Do you really have to drill out the eyes of your opponent and make a thin one-liner about it?

This movie was a crude mess between genres. Had it been serious about either the violence or the humour I might have let it pass. As it is it just makes me want to puke.
