La reina de España
(2016)

As good as its predecessor
Sequel to "La Niña De Tus Ojos", which brings together the entire cast of the previous film, retaking the story of the characters about 20 years after what happened in the previous film, almost the same time that both films have been released between them.

Trueba pays tribute to the Spanish cinema of the 50s, returning to the character of Macarena Granada (played again by a wonderful Penelope Cruz) that after what happened in the previous film becomes a star in Hollywood and returns to Spain to star in a Biopic of Queen Isabella the Catholic ...

But Trueba is not limited to making a history of cinema within the cinema, but rather portrays a cold and gray Spain that at that time seemed to have lost all hope for a better future ... And as with the previous film, Story moves between comedy and drama achieving a perfect balance resulting in a movie as good and as its predecessor ...

To Rome with Love
(2012)

Messy but very enjoyable
With this movie Woody Allen made one of his dreams come true of make a film in Rome, emulating to some of his idols as Fellini or Rosselini, having as a final result a very Italian movie .

When the Italian producers proposed Allen to make a movie that takes place in Rome, the American director using some notes and with the help of his friend Martin Solibakke developed a really messy script that tells 4 different stories (2 in Italian and 2 in English) with the only connection between them that all of them takes place in Rome.

As a result the film is a bit messy having some stories that doesn't really fit with the rest of the movie , for example the story starred by Roberto Benigni is really out of place with the rest, but although of that, the film in terms of quality is pretty good and never falls in boredom , keeping you interested in all the stories until the very end and having that magical charming that Allen always is able to put in his films ...

City Hunter: Ai to shukumei no Magnum
(1989)

Great debut of City Hunter in cinema
First animated Movie based in the City Hunter Manga and anime. Praised by the critics and loved by the fans , this movie is a marvelous action comedy with a great script that leads to a very exciting climax ,all of this accompanied by a gorgeous soundtrack that raises the dramatic moments in the key scenes of the film.

The Movie keeps all the essence of the original show and fits Perfectly in the City Hunter universe bringing the best from it in larger scale and introducing a very interesting plot in which Ryo and the rest of original characters take part

AWESOME MOVIE , Love it

Captain America: Civil War
(2016)

A Brilliant script with ups and downs in the rhythm
Besides The First "The Avengers" movie, the first two Captain America films have been the only Marvel movies that I really fully enjoyed, I also liked the Iron Man trilogy, but always left me the feeling that they could have been much better. Civil War is probably the most ambitious project in the Marvel Universe reuniting many of the best characters of the comic books in one film ,adapting one of the most interesting comic sagas of the last years. Civil War has many virtues but also many defects, its greatest virtue is its very good and intelligent script that has a surprising final twist at the end that resolves the plot perfectly, but I did't enjoy the narrative structure in which the script was executed, with abrupt changes of rhythm that decreases the pace of the story. The three acts of the film feels like if they were three different movies and the action sequences in the first act of the film were awfully shot, with crazy camera movements that don't allow to see what is happening on the screen and even they made me feel dizzy but fortunately in the second and third act this seems to get better and luckily the battle between the Main Characters was shot in a more decent way . The tone of the film in the first act and the third are different than in second, the first act and the third have a very serious tone but the second act changes drastically, with more humour and adding many of the lame jokes that marvel use to put in their productions that luckily were funnier than in other movies. The film also introduces new characters of the Marvel universe, Black Panther, looks amazing, although that with all those stupid camera movements in the action scenes you can't distinguish between a punch or a kick or whatever they are doing during the fights Emoticono tongue and also introduces to the new Spiderman, who as Spiderman looks pretty good but as Peter Parker I think they choose an extremely young actor and Marisa Tomei (an actress that I love) playing a hot an extremely young Aunt May did't convince me neither . Awful action sequences,, very fun and enjoyable battle between the heroes of the Marvel universe, Awesome Black Panther, Downey Jr being awesome, Spiderkid and the hottest Aunt May that you could ever imagine Emoticono tongue and an excellent script with ups and downs in the rhythm of the story but above all, one of the most enjoyable films in the Marvel cinematic universe

The King's Speech
(2010)

An inspiring well made historical drama
Sometimes this kind of historical Drama Films tend to rush in story- telling letting voids in the script that leads to an incomprehensible mess that just the ones who are familiar with the story can comprehend. Fortunately "The King's Speech" have succeed where other has failed. The Director, Tom Hooper, has been able to perfectly condensate the story the whole story in two hours with a very fast paced rhythm that never decrease and a fabulous and very faithful recreation of the epoch in which the story takes place that drags you into the story from the beginning until the end.

The Film it's based on true events in the life of King George VI , The plot explores his troublesome relationship with his family but especially focus in the relationship with his speech therapist who helped him to overcome his problems of stammering.

Colin Firth plays the George VI in one of the finest performances of his career, he was able to display on the screen the vulnerability and insecurity of his character, portraying the man beyond the myth but his performance wouldn't be that great without the supporting role of Geoffrey Rush as his speech Therapist, he brings refreshing small doses of humour into the story, encouraging to the audience ,showing us that working hard there is nothing that we can't achieve. Their scenes together are the key of the Film, both actors together works perfectly as the fundamental pillars in which the whole movie relies on.

The Film was written by David Seidler, a man who suffered of stammering in his youth and was inspired in the story of King George to write the script that has been also adapted as a Theatre play. This is exactly what it makes this film so special, besides its undeniable quality as a film, it's very inspiring and encourage to everyone to overcome their fears and insecurities..

WONDERFUL FILM, A MUST SEE

An
(2015)

Beautiful film
The last film directed by Naomi Kawase and I think the first in which she didn't use a script of her own , being an adaptation from a novel....

Watching the trailer you can feel that the movie is something more that it shows, being this a great success because they didn't spoil the most important part of the plot, letting the audience discover the truth about this characters while watching the movie.

The film is a beautiful tale about redemption, friendship and nature, told through a slow and very poetic style but although that it is a slow movie , I didn't even notice the duration of it because I was absorbed into the story...

I have read a lot about Naomi Kawase work and I was very interested but I've never had the chance of watch any of her movies until now, I have read that this one is her less personal and more commercial film but I'm looking forward to watch her previous works...I have really enjoyed her intimate way of tell stories and her exquisite style, I instantly became a fan of her...

The worst thing about this movie is that it makes you hungry Emoticono tongue

VERY GOOD MOVIE

Blood and Bone
(2009)

Nice flick but I expected more
I thought I was going to love this movie, but it wasn't what I expected, besides Jai White charisma and screen presence and some good fight scenes there is nothing really memorable in this movie, still a decent fight movie but nothing to remember...Is obvious that is a low budget film but it was shot in a very amateurish way and some scenes were made with very annoying shaking camera movements, luckily the fight scenes are not shot like that and you can see the action entirely, but the film it looks more like a hip hop videoclip than a martial arts movie...

There are appearances of MMA fighters as Kimbo Slice, Gina Carano and Bob Sapp , also the Kickboxer Maurice Smith appears and martial arts legends Bob Wall and Fumio Demura have a very brief appearance that you can miss if you blink

Irezumi
(1966)

Pure art
Wonderful film based on a novel by Juinichiro Tanizaki, directed by one of the bad boys of 60's Japanese cinema, Yasuzo Masumura and starred by a brilliant and beautiful Ayako Wakao, who plays Otsuya, a beautiful young woman from a middle-class merchant family who is abducted into geisha work, and who catches one day the eye of Seikichi, a tattoo master who marks her back with a huge, monstrous spider. From that moment on, Otsuya will take her revenge with every man who shared her bed..

A very perverse story of revenge full of elegant erotism, not showing graphic nude or sex scenes but showing highly suggestive shots (which are more than enough) and made in a very poetical way, I've always been a big fan of how Japanese filmmakers were able to mix entertainment with art.

The film is also a reflect of how obsessive and toxic relationships always lead to a tragic ending and is up to the spectator to decide if Ayako Wakao's character is a victim of circumstances or responsible of it or maybe the spider on her back is the cause of her misconduct and bad manners....

A PIECE OF ART

Manji
(1964)

Piece of art
Wonderful film based on the novel "Quicksand" by Juinichiro Tanizaki and directed by the great Japanese director Yasuzô Masumura, the film tells the story of a married woman who begins a sick and obsessive love relationship with a beautiful and ruthless young girl (played by a marvelous Ayako Wakao), that insane relationship will lead to a tragic ending ...

The movie tells a story about passion, love and betrayal, displaying tons of sensuality stylishly without need of being explicit...

The are too many other versions of this movie made years later but I highly doubt that they can come any closer to this piece of art...

MASTERPIECE

Lahore
(2010)

Friendship between nations
Loosely based in one of my favorite American martial arts movies "Best of the best", this Indian martial arts film has a clear message of friendship between two nations, India and Pakistan but although of that, the film was not released in Pakistan because they considered that the movie shows the country in bad light..

The musical moments are much more tolerable than in other Idian films that I've watched, here are just part of the story and nobody suddenly begins to dance and sing crazily for over ten minutes Emoticono tongue but the weakest point of the movie are the fights in the ring, nothing spectacular, slow and sometimes even clumsy, it is very obvious that none of the actors has a martial arts background...

Taare Zameen Par
(2007)

A small masterpiece
Two years before Aamir Khan starred the masterpiece "Three Idiots" , he produced, directed and starred this other masterpiece that as "Three Idiots" covered the topic of education but in a deeper and touching way telling the story of Ishaan, a dyslexic eight year old kid, who his teachers and family are unable to understand until he meets a new teacher ( Aamir Khan) who will help him with his dyslexia problem and also will help him to develop his talented skills for painting...

The film is simply perfect, it has some musical moments and just one musical number but is AWESOME and fits perfectly with the film, the kid who plays the leading role is fantastic and Aamir Khan is brilliant as always... The movie is almost three hours long but time passes so fast while watching it that you don't even notice...

the touching story contains a very deep inner message , tells that education is not indoctrination and every child is special in its own way...Is sad to see how our educational system don't find for efficiency over results and leave out to those students who in some way don't blindly follow the established norms....

Aamir Khan was the man who made me feel interested and love the Hindi cinema when I first watched "Three idiots" and this film just made me admire him even more...He is an awesome artist...

BRILLIANT, MASTERPIECE, GREAT

Hak hap
(1996)

Disappointing
I didn't like it this movie at all..Very strange film based in a Chinese comic, in which Jet Li plays some kind of superhero who dresses as Kato from The green hornet... Shot in dark colors, the film looks like an experimental project, , the cinematography is simply awful, the plot is dumb, the characters are plain and simple(specially the annoying character played by Karen Mok) the action sequences are so bad (although that Yuen Woo Ping was behind them) the action of this movie reminds to the kind of action that modern Hollywood movies make nowadays, shaky camera movements that don't allow to see the action...

There is a sequel made years later without Jet Li and co starred by a WWE dude who looked like Van Damme and a porn actress, that I have no intentions to watch...

AWFUL MOVIE

Se ying diu sau
(1978)

Classic of Kung fu cinema
One of the biggest classics of martial arts cinema, the film that started a new subgenre in kung fu cinema , the comedy kung fu cinema and the breakthrough fim for its star, the legendary Jackie Chan...

Directed by the legendary Yuen Woo Ping and co-starred by his father Yuen Siu Tien, playing his eternal role as the old beggar drunken master, this film is an example of how a perfect kung fu movie should be made, from the badass opening sequence with Jackie training with a red background behind him , accompanied by a catchy music until the final epic final fight against the great Hwang Jang Lee , the film is a succession of outstanding and very original martial arts sequences accompanied by great doses of humour ..Although that Lau Kar Leung already had used this formula in his directorial debut "The spiritual Boxer" made three years before, however, it was this film the one that gave a new direction to Hong Kong kung fu movies becoming in an instant classic..

MASTERPIECE

A Fighting Man
(2014)

Very original
Great boxing drama which through a very original script and editing recreates a boxing match in which between rounds and through long flashbacks we find out the reasons why boxers are fighting in that fight.

One of the great virtues of the film is it's originality in the way that tells the story, not resembling to any other movie of the genre, being the less important of the film the boxing match and focusing more in the human drama that both fighters are going through Damian Lee, director and screenwriter of the film achieved in a outstanding way to keep you interested until the ending of the story.

The film is starring by a great Dominic Purcell who lead a cast with some established names such as James Caan , Louis Gosset JR and Famke Jamssen who also displays a very nice performance.

There is a brief a appearance of Freddie Roach that boxing fans will probably enjoy Highly recommended

3 Idiots
(2009)

unforgettable, inspirational, a must watch
The first time I watched this film it was a great surprise, because I've never liked Bollywood films and I didn't know what to expect. A friend of mine told me that it was her favorite film and that I should watch it..I'm glad that I've listened to her.

This marvelous film is so good that you don't even notice the long duration of it. It has a little bit of everything and even the few musical parts of the movie fits perfectly.

Directed with a perfect rhythm, this movie rebels against the actual educational system in which the more important is to pass tests but not really achieving new skills than really learns something that is going to be useful.

Rancho, the main character of the film, is introduced to the audience as an idealist who defies the system not caring about the consequences, his one and only concern is study hard for learning and achieve new skills. An amazing character that should inspire who watches the film.

Definitely this movie is not what it looks at first sight, it is a great, unforgettable and inspirational film that gets into the bottom of the heart.

Da Shang Hai
(2012)

Great story, very well made
Directed by one of the best directors of Hong Kong cinema industry, Wong Jing and starred by one of his favorite actors, the charismatic Chow Yun fat, who adds a new memorable performance to her legendary career, and wrapped by a cast full of stars such as Francis Ng and the legendary Sammo Hung and new rising stars as Xiaoming Huang, who amazing portraying the younger version of Chow Yun fat, literally becoming in him, and completing the cast with the talented and beautiful Quan Yuan, Li Yuan and Monica Mok. This film has overcame all my expectations becoming into one of my favorites from it's director, I love every photo gram from it and I dare to consider it a masterpiece.

The film tells the story of the rise to the power of Cheng Daiqi in the crime world in the Sanghai from the 30's and his impossible love story with Zhiqiu, a young girl who dreams in become in a famous opera singer, something that is forbidden for her, it also tells the efforts of Daiqi to defend Sanghai from the Japanese invasion.

The film pass through many different genres from melodrama, gangster cinema, action and romance, being divided in two parts.

In the first part of the film Wong Jing, using flashbacks, tells the humble origins of the main character and the his love story, using masterly camera movements and travelings to take the audience in a travel through time, accompanied by a beautiful photography by Andrew Lau and a wonderful score that is a key factor in the most important moments of the story to excite the audience.

scenes as the one in which a young Daiqi, played by Xaoming Hua, arrives to Sanghai and stares at the biggest building to the city trying to see the end of it where the camera ascends until the last floor in which an older Daiqi, played by Yun Fat, is contemplating the whole city and the later scene in which a traveling shows a young Daiqi sitting in front of his men just after become in the right hand of the crime boss in Sanghai, played by a great Sammo Hung, the then after the traveling become in the adult version of the character played by Chow Yun Fat, is a perfect and perfect visual exercise that unifies in a masterly way the past and the present of the story and the character.

The first act of the story ends with the spectacular sequences of the invasion of Sanghai by the Japanese army that reach it's climax in a scene that is pure poetry.

The second part of the film shows Daiqi defending Sanghai from the Japanese invasion leading us to an emotional and epic ending...

One of the best moves made in Hong Kong in recent years, much better than the films that are coming out from Hollywood these days.

The Expendables 3
(2014)

Stallone takes the franchise to a higher new level
Sylvester Stallone has taken "The Expendables" saga to a higher new level with this new film of the franchise, leaving behind all the homages and the parody of the previous ones, making this film have it's own style...

the cast adds two new legends, Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford and Stallone being aware of how good actor Mel Gibson is, has created a villain that fits him perfectly, giving him some great and epic dialogue lines.

But the big surprise of the cast is the hilarious and outstanding performance by Antonio Banderas as Galgo, a Spanish milician, who tries everything he can to become an Expendable.Almost all the comedy of the film lies on him and he seems to be very comfortable in this kind of movies.

From the younger actors who are part of the new team, Ronda Rousey is by far the most charismatic one, using her fantastic fighting skills and charisma to steal the show in her scenes.

The film begins with a fast pace that never flags, introducing new characters quickly but in an effective way, and leading to a twenty minutes long final climax , in which we can see all the cast members show off their skills...

Definitely, a joy from start to finish, that can be just fully enjoyed in theatres, a great visual stravaganza and a celebration of a type of cine that sadly we don't often see these days

Shang Hai zhi yen
(1984)

Extremely beautiful film
Very beautiful film directed in 1984 by legendary HK director Tsui Hark. A mix of genres , from slapstick comedy ,to musical and romance, all this accompanied by a wonderful music score , extremely beautiful photography and the gorgeous performances of the three main actors, specially Sally Yeh, who was always splendid in every movie she made...

The story takes place in Sanghai during the Japanese invasion and tells the story of a couple who fell in love under a bridge during a Japanese air raid, even not knowing each other's name they made a vow to meet again after the end of the war...

This film exceeded all my expectations and deserves to be consider a classic....Highly recommended

Paganini
(1989)

Kinski cinematographic testament
Klaus Kinski defined himself in his memories as the reincarnation of Paganini, his obsession for the violin genius made him writes, direct, edit and of course stars along with his wife and son ,this biopic that also was his cinematographic testament ,being the last movie he ever made before his death, and without any doubt the one that better defines his own personality....

Based in his own persona and experiences Kinski creates a portrait of Paganini through a succession of images that borders the pornographic, accompanied by the music of the genius, creating moment of pure ecstasy in which music and sex come together as part of the same thing.

The film shows a man trapped in himself, who is only able to see the world through his own art.

Kinski and Paganini becomes the same person in a desperate journey in the search of love, where they will be saved by most pure love that exist, the love of their own blood.

Grudge Match
(2013)

A great tribute to a legendary legacy
it is a shame how poorly distribution this wonderful movie had when it was released, another example of how bad is Hollywood these days....

Starred by two of the greatest legends in movie history, the film is a comedy with some great dramatic moments in which both actors pay tribute to two of their most iconic characters but besides that the movie stands by itself not having to constantly refer to Raging Bull or Rocky ,in fact it has less self-parody that I thought it would have . it is a very deep and interesting story ,in which the boxing is not really the most important thing of the story, a film full of soul, something that lacks in today's cinema.

It was really unexpected how great the final fight between De Niro and Stallone is , edited in a very similar way of the Rocky movies, specially the last one

there is an hilarious post credit scene that I'm sure boxing fans are going to love and MMA fans will enjoy with the brief but funny appearance of Chael Sonnen

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning
(2012)

Darker, violent and confusing
I didn't know what to expect from the last UNIVERSAL SOLDIER, the first one of the franchise is a total classic, the second one was a big disappointment and the third one was a great surprise that gave a new vision to the franchise, in this new film Jean-Claude Van Damme is no longer the main actor, his character has new argumental twist becoming of some kind of colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse now, losing the little mankind he had left, I must say that his performance is what I most liked about the film. This time Scott Adkins is the star, a great martial artist who in my opinion lacks in charisma compared with the greatest stars of the genre, his final fight against JCVD is pretty awesome . Dolph Lundgren also has a brief appearance that really doesn't bring nothing to the story and MMA fighter Andrei Arlovski who played the villain in the previous one repeats his role in this one..This film is darker and most violent than the previous ones, disturbing and at moments confusing , I think is a good closure to the saga although that is not as brilliant as the original Universal Soldier and Universal soldier regeneration..

Rurôni Kenshin: Meiji kenkaku roman tan
(2012)

it can't be better
The Rurouni Kenshin live action is great, I would dare to say that it can't be better, a perfect and very faithful adaptation of the manga and the anime that captures all the essence of the original story..They also added something to the character that I always thought that it was missing in the original manga, in that period of time samurais were not only sword masters they were also Jiu Jitsu experts, in the film Kenshin displays a few of great jiu jitsu techniques combine with the spectacular fighting sequences that has nothing to envy with the ones of the original anime...Hollywood should learn from Japan how to make great comic films..LOVE IT

The Appaloosa
(1966)

extremely underrated film
although the final duel between Marlon Brando and John Saxon should have been much more epic "The Appaloosa" (1966) is an extremely underrated western... Brando is great as always, all about in the scenes where his character has to pretend that he is a Mexican, but John Saxon performance is one of the greatest in all movie history, his portrayal of a Mexican villain speaking with a more than perfect Mexican accent is terrific... one of my favorite scenes from the film is the arm wrestling contest between Brando and Saxon very well directed by Sidney J. Fury who directed this film as if was a spaghetti western---very recomendable and underrated fim

Warrior
(2011)

The film that the MMA world deserves
this is the film that the MMA world deserves, a fantastic movie with an emotional and very well written story, with great actors that displays wonderful performances, although there is a bit misrepresentations about MMA and its fighters, the film is able to capture the epic, the glory and the essence of the greatest sport in the world. The fights in the cage are very realistic and well done with many powerful , dramatic and inspirational moments.. Is not a film just for fighting fans, people who never have approach to the Mixed Martial Arts world can also enjoy it and even shed a tear with the dramatic and touching moments of the films...

Tian yu
(1998)

Heartbreaking film
heartbreaking film about the Chinese cultural revolution in the 70's, when young girls were separated from their families and sent away to the remote countryside for manual labors ( A DUMB TRADITION THAT WAS PART OF THE Chinese CULTURAL REVOLUTION).The main character of this film is a 15 year old girl named XIU XIU, who is a victim of the circumstances, someone who relies in the hope of a false promise that will be the path for her destruction. She is sent to live with a man named Lao Jin, who will do everything he can to satisfy her ,he will be witness of the brutality of the corruption of a rotten system, feeling powerless of can do anything for save her.
