Charmed: Sweet Tooth
(2018)
Episode 3, Season 1

Racist and Disempowering
Incredibly RACIST. Incredibly DISemppowering. When negative remarks are made abut ANY race it is RACIST. Ongoing "male bashing" is NOT empowering to Women,, it is just incredibly OFFENSIVE to all of the men who have spent their entire lives promoting equality.

This is a nasty, meansprited bit of nonsense.

This program features some of the worst writing seen on any network show. Episode three was even more preposterous than the pilot. In this episode there is a scene where the "scientist sister" determines that you can expose demonic possession by feeding someone a SUGAR COOKIE.

There was almost a decade of original shows. It established a series of "conventions" which always made some sort of logical sense. The current writers totally ignore these established conventions and continually insult the intelligence level of the viewer.

I have really tried to like this new version, but it is CHarmless and needs to be out out of its misery

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
(2018)

This Children's Series is NOT Suitable for Children -- or Adults with a Brain.
This is not a reboot of the beloved 1996 series! Remember everything you loved about the original series? You will not find any of that in this horrible exploitation piece.

This is, however, a cheaply made Canadian drama and retitle it into something more palatable for American Audiences. Fans of the original series will be particularly annoyed and insulted.

I can only assume they had no one doing continuity on this series. Sabrina's Aunts are played by English Actress Lucy Davis as Hilda and Australian Actress Miranda Otto as Zelda. I don't know which is more annoying Davis using a distinctly British accent, or Otto using the "Australian pretending to be American" accent. Neither of them speak with the same accent as Sabrina, or the other characters.

The pilot make a lot of hollow posturing about "Women's rights" and "empowering girls". They toss out phrase slike "White Patriarchy " and the like.... and yet the driving premise of the pilot episode is whether or not Sabrina will "submit to the Dark Lord". The lesson here is that lip service will be given to women, but when it really matters they have to give themselves to a powerful Male.

There is a lot of political posturing here. There is as lot, a disturbing amount of references to Dark arts, and serving Satan and the like. This is a children' series which is not even remotely suitable for children.

Ross Lynch plays Sabrina's boyfriend Harvey. Ross Lynch who has been a Disney Star for years. The producers have emasculated him. Dyed his hair a shoe polish brown, and given him the most unflattering haircut. And, any trace of Lynch's natural charisma has been carefully emasculated.

Charmed: Pilot
(2018)
Episode 1, Season 1

Not Just Charmless but Also Clueless
This has to be one of the most poorly written series of the 2018 season. While this is not "Shakespeare" even a show of this type must have a minimal level of credibility. This show is so poorly written that the glaring plot holes are so large you could drive a Semi Truck through them. At one point in the pilot, one of the sisters expels a demon by shaking baking soda at it! This would make high comedy -- except it is not even remotely funny. The writers confuse demonic possession with how to clean a shower drain!

Also disturbing is the "Ethnic Balancing" of the central characters. The three central characters are supposed to be sisters -- but one is a Latina, one is Black, and one is ....generic Canadian. Pick an ethnicity, pick ANY of these ethnicities and build a show from that - but do not have such blatant tokenism it is offensive.

Fans of the original series will be especially disappointed by this horrible reincarnation..; perhaps we should throw a box of baking soda at it!

Stale Retread of Alien Natioon
Remember when Will Smith made movies which were actually enjoyable? This is so NOT one of those movies. How Smith even has a movie career at this point is beyond me. The man cannot act. He prances through the movie essentially playing himself. It is just irritating seeing a man pushing the mid century mark pretending to be a "hip 20 year old". There is not one single new or innovative idea in this entire movie. If it has a "been there seen it all before" aspect to it before.l that is because it is essentially a rehash of the 1980s Movie and television series "Alien Nation". Except that Alien Nation had actors who could actually act and a compelling plot.

Do yourself a favor. IF you enjoy this kind of movie, watch the original "Alien Nation"

The Great British Bake Off: Biscuit Week
(2018)
Episode 1, Season 9

New Cast NOT worth Bothering with!
I have been a loyal fan of this show since its inception. The original show with it INITIAL cast was a wonderful thing to watch.

Mary Berry is a National Treasure. Without HER the show looses its magic and becomes just another cheaply produced cooking show. Paul Hollywood CANNOT carry a show like this all on his own. His day glow ORANGE spray tan is too distracting, as is he acidic personality. Noel FIelding adds absolutely NOTHING to the show -- his "aged punk rocker" persona is disturbing to the point of being scary. Prue Leith may know about baking, but she has little to no "camera appeal" . Sandi Toksvig is,m politely, a NON entity.

The new incarnation of this beloved show is totally NOT worth bothering with!

Insatiable

Last Two Episodes Destroy the Integrity of the Series -- make it NOT worth bothering withngh with
The first ten episodes were amazing. I loved them. I was thoroughly enjoying the writing, the character development, and the general overall quality of the scripts. The first ten episodes were all rated a NINE or higher.

Then you have the last two episodes of the season, which undermined what I had come to love about the series. These last two episodes were Awful. They literally destroyed the integrity of the characters.. forcing preposterous situations on the characters which were simple insane. It left a very bad taste in my mouth about the entire season.

There is a lot of critical talk about "body image" . What people should be complaining about is the asinine conclusion of the first season. They should be indignant that viewers sat through TEN episodes ..only to find the lead characters literally go insane in the last two.

Pass on this stinker. There should be NO season two

The Saint
(2017)

The Saint it Ain't
Accept this for what it is- a failed television pilot with added scenes added to pad it out to movie length.

The main reason this never made it to series has to be Eliza Dushku. She is a "black hole" that causes all action to stop any time she is on camera. She behaves as if she is heavily medicated -- delivering each and every line with the same flat monotone. I wonder why any performer with such a severely limited range can have a career even in Hollywood.

The other major failing here is with the basic plot. It is about as generic as possible, Absolutely nothing in this film is even remotely new or fresh -- it all has a "seen this all before many many times" aspect to it.

All Hallows' Eve
(2016)

a Total Waste of Tme
There is not one new or innovative idea in this entire movie. You have seen it all before .. many many times before... and always done much much better than this production. The production values are achingly low... even for a "Canadian Production". Even by Canadian standards, the cast is exceptionally bland and totally lacking in charisma. About a third of the way into the movie you start glancing at your watch wondering if ANYTHING entertaining is going to happen in this film.

There are many many other similar themed movies.... watch one of THEM. But, do not waste your time on this one.

Krypton
(2018)

Yawn-Fest Lacks Substance and Originality
I wonder if the writers have ever seen a superman magazine or ever read a Superman comic? They lack the basic understanding to write a series of this type. One thing is certaim they are veryfamiliar with Star Trek- many of the plot points have been deliberately stolen from that series.

This is a series about "America's Greatest Hero". Apparently, no one associated with this program realizes that Superman has NEVER spoken with a British accent - yet his family members all have noticable British accents.

The pilot to this series was filmed in SERBIA, subsequent episodes were filmed in IRELAND. The cast is composed of English and Irish Actors. Weren't there any AMERICAN Actors who could have done this?

While the pilot did have its moments, they were very few and far between. With so much"Borrowing" from earlier science fiction programs, there was very little which was new or ground breaking.

The Central Character SegEl, played by Cameron Cuffe is one of the blandest and least charismatic Actors to ever appear on the SyFy channel. He appears to have only two responses to any situatiuon "bland" and "constipated'.

Superman fans deserve a better, far better, effort.

Timeless
(2016)

Really Bad History Week After Week
I really wanted to like this series. I patiently suffered through each episode of the first season hoping that the series would find its voice. In fairess, the three main leads are very amiable and engaging. But ultimately nothing they can do can overcome the horribly bad scripts they are stuck with.

Each week there are plot points large enough to drive a truck through.

A series about time travel succeeds, or fails, on how well it can deal with the past. The writers of this series simply ignore anything in our past which does not advance their plot points.

iZombie: Are You Ready for Some Zombies?
(2018)
Episode 1, Season 4

Yet Another Canadian Production Pretending to be Seattle
The "C" in the CW network must surely mean Canadian. IZombie is yet another of their series which is filmed in Canada. There must be something horribly wrong with Vancouver British Columbia. This is yet another Vancouver series pretending it is set in "Seattle".

In this episode along there are several dozen references to Seattle. One of the characters is even named "Zorn" after a former Seahawks player. This is absurb ,and even somewhat annoying, whent hese references are spoken in Canada by what is basically a Canadian crew.

Now, there is nothing wrong with Canada. And there is nothing wrong with Canadian Actors wanting to stay emplohyed. What I have a problem with are American television networks who want to cut costs by passing Canadian productions off as an "All American Product".

All Canadian comments aside, the fourth season premier is absurb. The plot points are so big you could drive a truckthroughthem. What began as a quirky and moderately entertaining sci fi show is now just reaqlly really stupid.

IF there is to be a completesesonfour, thewriting needs to improve significantly

Not As Many Laughs as an Episode of Sixty Minutes
As I watched this big steaming pile of NOT FUNNY, I kept asking myself how this mess would have ever been made into a series. It has absolutely no reedeeming qualities. These is more humor in an episode of SixtyMinutes than in this program.

The main problem with this series is that the writing is dull and uninspired. Snotty and strident does not make for a good comedy.

Sadly, the cast is on part with the quality of the writing. Glen Howerton is repugnant and annoying.

Don't waste your time on this one -- it is notgoing to last the fujll ten episodes.

Saturday Night Live: Kumail Nanjiani/P!nk
(2017)
Episode 3, Season 43

Stale Writing - Single topic Satire Show
Enough! SNL has become a single topic satire show -- they exist solely to mock Donald Trump. And, while there is no more deserving person on the planet, this is getting old... very very old.

If I see one more skit with Alex Baldwin playing Donald Trump, I am going to run screaming from the room! NBC needs to fire the current coven of writers and find people who can write jokes about more than one single subject.

For the past two weeks Harvey Weinstein has been the subject of much media attention. He would have made a superb target for SNL... the writers have remained totally silent. For two entire weeks there has been not one reference to Weinstein on SNL.

Evenmore disturbing is how the "humor" on SNL has become so harsh and mean spirited. The writers are now attacking the family of the President. This is NOT FUNNY folks. This is just sad ... very very sad.

Will & Grace: Who's Your Daddy
(2017)
Episode 2, Season 9

Stale Jokes Stolen from Other Sitcoms
Remember when Will and Grace had new and innovative writing? Well, you won't find it in this episode. They steal shamelessly from any number of sitcoms over the last sixty years. Particularly annoying is an extended "Two women trapped in a shower stall" which was taken directly from a 1963 "Here's Lucy" episode. Next week will we have Grace becoming intoxicated while trying to do a VitaMetaVegamin Commercial?

It has been eleven years since these characters were last seen. The writing staff expects us to believe that none of them have grown or matured. Things which were cute for a thirty year old, are gross and kind of creepy for someone pushing fifty to do.

The one good thing this sitcom has going for it is that there were absolutely no superheroes or mutants in the entire half hour. For that reason alone, I will probably continue to watch it

The Gifted
(2017)

Yet Another Stale Mutant Series
Yawn, yet another tiresome Marvel series. Yawn, yet another tiresome Marvel Mutant series. It is sad that Fox Executives think there are enough fifteen year old boys and Nerds who live in their Mother's Basements to justify yet another tiresome Mutant themed series.

Is this a bad series? Candidly I would have to answer no. But there are only so many things a writer can do with Mutant characters -- so I do not hold out hope for any originality or real character development.

The Actors struggle through the series. They manage to keep a straight face while delivering the most preposterous lines. For an action packed series, the cast struggles to merely stay awake. This ennui is particularly evident with the more well known Adult Actors.

I do not expect this series to last beyond ten episodes -- so catch it now while you can.

Inhumans
(2017)

Very Disappointing - A Generic Mutant Programmer
This is not a bad program. But nearly all of the elements of this show have been seen before -- many many times before. Do we really need yet another "mutant themed" television series or movie franchise?

Disney seems determined to milk every last drop of programming out of the Marvel franchise. While there is a place for this type of entertainment, I think we are well past the saturation point.

This program adds nothing to the genre. All of the elements of the pilot have been seen before -- many many times before. The elements of the show have a "been there seen it all before" aspect to them. This is particularly evident in the special effects.

The script is so poorly written that it does not create empathy for any of the characters. The cast is lifeless and underwhelming. Anson Mount, who is normally a dynamic and personable actor plods through his scenes like an action figure. The other cast members, who have less experience, are even more lifeless and inert.

I wish Disney would give this genre a rest. I long to see any of these Actors play real human beings with real programs. For now, I am going to pass on "The Inhumans"

I am particularly disappointed in the performance of Anson Mount. He is normally a passionate and engaging Actor. Mount stumbles through every scene as if he is heavily medicated. The other actors who have less experience are even worse.

Will & Grace: 11 Years Later
(2017)
Episode 1, Season 9

Really Disappointing
Remember when Will and Grace had cutting edge humor? Remember when it had naughty humor that never went too far?

Prepare to be terribly disappointed by the new version of the program. Sure, the four central characters are there, but somehow they are just not as cool or as "cutting edge" as you remember them.

The biggest disappointment is the quality of the writing. It has become incredibly mean spirited and strident. The central focus of many of these jokes is the current President. But there were also jabs at Nancy Regan,Barbara Bush, Pat Nixon. So this is less a comedy and much more of a "political vendetta". I am not a Republican, and I certainly did not vote for the current Administration, but it made me extremely uncomfortable.

Eleven years hiatus has not made Sean Hayes any more tolerable to watch. Hayes is pushing fifty and he is still pretending to be a twenty-five year old actor playing a part. This was bad enough during the original run of the series, but now it just is very very creepy. The writers should allow the Jack character to act his age.

To be fair, the program had its moments, but they were very few and far between. The writing staff needs to remember they are writing a comedy, and not use this series as a tool to verbally smite political figures they dislike.

NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service: House Divided
(2017)
Episode 1, Season 15

What Utter Nonsense!
Let me preface this review by saying that I have been a loyal NCIS viewer for the past fourteen years. It has been one of my favorite programs for over a decade.

The Season Opener for season fourteen is one of the most preposterous plot points I have seen on any CBS television series. The NCIS field team is stranded somewhere in the jungles of South America. The GPS on their cell phone is not working, so they are saved by .....loading a dating App onto the phone. Mererly by knowning the number of miles away they are able to immediately find the precise point in the Jungle to send the rescue team. What utter nonsense. What incredibly lazy writing.

This episode better not be indicative of the quality of upcoming episodes for this venerable series -- or it won't make it to Season 16.

The Orville
(2017)

Disappointing Vanity Project
Seth MacFarlane is a successful entertainer. This does not mean he is successful in every area of entertainment. "The Orville" is a clear example of that. While it does have its "moments' they are very few and far between.

I understand that MacFarlane might want to see himself as a serious dramatic actor - but that is simply NOT his forte. He is just not "Captain material". He comes across being bland and wooden. The rest of the cast, with the exception of the Doctor, are also bland and uninteresting.

If the sci fi fans are honest, they have seen all of this many many times before. Much of this program appears to be a parody of really bad sci fi programs. Sadly, I believe MacFarlane is not trying to intentionally do a comedy.

I do not see this program lasting through the end of October....

Hooten & the Lady
(2016)

Don't Waste Your Time on this Stinkeroo
If you are threatened by anything new or innovative do not worry - there is not a single original idea in this series. This series recycles stale plot points from any number of previous sci fi TV series. It steals from series like 1997's "Relic Hunters" all the way to the current "The Librarians" and any number of series in between.

Those other series at least had engaging lead Actors , this series not so much. British Actress Ophelia Lovibond is pretty much a "walking overbite". Her dramatic range is limited to delivering lines in the same annoying flat monotone.

Michael Landes at 45 is getting far too long in the tooth to play these roles. He is about fifteen years too old to be playing this role - and it shows in every scene. He looks very tired, and disappointed.

There is absolutely no chemistry between the two leads. They stumble through each scene as if they were highly medicated.

The only bright spot in this production is Jane Seymour. Her scenes remind us of what a competent actress can do to raise the level of a production. Unfortunately Seymour is rarely utilized .

Morgan
(2016)

Total Yawnfest
There are certain things one just naturally expects from a "horror"movie. There have to be elements of terror, moments of suspense, and positive characters the audience roots for. There also has to be some sort of resolution where good triumphs over evil.

This movie has none of these elements.

It also commits the cardinal sin of any movie -- it is incredibly boring and tedious. They take a great twelve minute plot and stretch it into an incredibly long movie. You will find yourself checking your watch about halfway into the movie.

There is also no clear idea of who the "good guys" and the "bad guys" are in this film. But ultimately, it does not matter by the second half of the movie you just want it to end.

There is little to know character development. The major characters wander around as if they are heavily medicated.

All of the Actors in this movie have been in better films -- far better films.

Song of Scheherazade
(1947)

Wonderful Bit of Light Entertainment
The plot of this movie defies any rationality. Allegedly a biography of the Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov. The film is set in Morocco and features a fine Spanish Family who encounters the crew of a Russian cadet training ship who have spent the last two years at sea. (And this is the most credible part of the script).

Thirty-Nine year old Eve Arden plays a Spanish Noblewoman who is the mother of 25 year old Yvonne DeCarlo. To her credit Arden never takes the plot seriously. Arden is given a much larger part than she normally had in 1940s movies and she is a delight from start to finish.

Brian Donlevy plays a Russian Sea Captain and somehow manages to steal every scene he is in. Even though he has several scenes in which he is forced to appear naked from the waist up. In typical 1940s fashion he is warring a pair of pants which are so high the waistband covers his navel, and almost his nipples as well.

George Dolenz, Father of Mickie Dolenz of "the Monkees" has a featured role. Elena Verdugo who would later play the nurse of "Marcus Welby M.D. is also in a few scenes.

The weak link in this cast is the central character. French Actor Jean Pierre Aumont plays the Russian Composer Rinsky-Korsakov. There is absolutely no sexual chemistry between Aumont and DeCarlo. The only thing he fingers well is his violin. Aumont stumbles through his scenes as if he is heavily medicated - or highly heterophobic.

If you can throw reality , and rationality, out the window this can be a wonderful bit of light entertainment. The kitschy costumes, the "Authentic" sets, and even the lurid Technicolor makeup all of the characters are forced to wear.

Let's Live a Little
(1948)

Horrible Script Hampers Stellar Cast
This movie features some amazing Actors. All three of the principle Actors are about ten to fifteen years past their "glory days".They are mired in a terrible plot that no amount of technical skills, or personal charisma can overcome.

This is basically a second rate B movie with an A level cast.

Hedy Lamarr plays a female Doctor. In order for a woman to become a Doctor in the 1940s, she had to be far more that just intelligent. She had to have an incredible focus and a commitment to her career. The horribly patronizing script expects us to believe that Larmarr's character would be willing to throw it all away because a moment with Robert Cummings could turn her into a quivering pile of jelly.

Robert Cumming's character is written as one of the strangest "Leading Man" types I have ever seen in any classic movie. He is fussy, prissy, highly emotional, and totally lacking in testosterone. The script calls for Cummings to act like a "confirmed bachelor" type of character. He is asked to pull off the type of performance Franklin Pangborn did so much more successfully.

Worst of all is how the script treats Anna Sten. This is one of the last movies Sten ever made. Sten was one of the most beautiful women to ever appear in a Classic Movie. The lighting and camera angles are deliberately unsympathetic to an older woman.

Despite what you might read, this is not a comedy. There is a lot of fussing and a lot of busy work, but don't confuse this with humor.

Gold Rush Maisie
(1940)

Radically Different Maisie Movie
Let me preface this review by saying that I have watched ALL Of the other nine "Maisie" movies. There are reasons this is the least often seen film in this series.

This is not a comedy. This is a serious film on the plight of migrant farm workers which pretends to be a comedy so the general public will watch it. As a movie on "social comment' is is not a bad movie. As a comedy featuring the Maisie character it is dreadful, just dreadfully bad. The Maisie character is one of the most beloved characters in B films of the 1940s. Here she is totally and completely out of place -- a bubbly showgirl wannabe plonked down in the middle of the Arizona desert.

This is also one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen from this period. The entire movie moves from one disturbing theme to the next, with little to ease the tone. There are some especially disturbing scenes. There are scenes of children starving. families who are forced to sleep in tents without adequate water to drink. .ANd n and on Never has "real life' be so present in a 1940s movie.

I love Ann Sothern. I love the Maisie series. I do not care for this movie.

Operator 13
(1934)

Preposterous Racial Stereotypes
This movie is guaranteed to offend people of Color, Southerners, Women, and people with a conscience.

It has what has to be one of the most preposterous plots ever inflicted on the American Movie Audiences. Marion Davies, was a woman noted for her ultra light colored gray blue eyes. In this plot she is a Civil War era spy who put on a dark wig, darkens her skin slightly and passed for a black laundry maid. As the maid, she giver her alter ego all of the very worst stereotypes of a 1930s "Black Servant". It is shamefully bad. White Southerners are treated only marginally better. And don't get me started on the liberties it takes with American History.

There is really only one reason to see this movie -- Gary Cooper. This is one of his early movies and he is amazingly handsome here. Fast forward through the Marion Davies bits and linger on the scenes with Gary Cooper.
