Music and Lyrics
(2007)

Excellent comedy and chemistry
This is a great romcom because Barrymore and Grant play well off each other. Add to that a cast whose physical comedic timing is spot on, and there are plenty of laughs. Lots of eighties music parodies keep the mood up.

Geliebte Clara
(2008)

Music draws you into the story
I just saw Geliebte Clara today, in an intimate theater of about 100 seats. Close to the screen, I was quickly drawn into the music and the emotion of the players. The costuming was fantastic, with rich colors and fantastic textures. Women didn't wear the most confining corsets every day, there were many different styles, and softer ones were used for traveling or daily wear. Women of lower social orders didn't wear them at all. Beyond corsets, the film had a remarkable sensitivity and cohesion I hadn't expected from the filmmakers. There was great attention to detail, and I found the cast to be highly committed to their roles. Only the actor playing Robert I found to occasionally be a little less than attentive. Martina Gedeck is now my favorite German actress. This is a must-have DVD for me.

Just Like Heaven
(2005)

Wonderfully funny and quirky
My 15 y.o. Goth-leaning daughter walked through the room as Elizabeth confronted David for the first time. She glanced at the screen, dismissed it as "another one of her mother's romantic comedies," then did a double-take when Elizabeth did something only a ghost could do. Next thing you know, she was firmly ensconced on the sofa, enjoying the film. This is a delightful movie, and it hit just the right balance of weird/spirit/other worldliness to capture the hearts of both my daughter and myself.

Reese has earned her place at the top of the Hollywood power structure, and she delivers in this film. Mark Ruffalo continually surprises me with his depth, and he really charmed me in this film. I particularly liked his character arc, as he shows both the depths of his despair, and manages to grow out of it. I have dreamed that garden as well. Wonderful film!

Kissing a Fool
(1998)

Not impressive
This was a great plot, but this filming really missed something for me. As a romantic comedy, it can be enjoyed, but it doesn't blow me away like the big ones do. The cruelty was out of place, particularly the scene after Sam's and Max's first date. Individual scenes made sense and ran smoothly, but the whole film didn't have much cohesion for me. I found it difficult to believe Jay really had a relationship with the model Natasha, so much so that he was quite despondent after the breakup. I did actually like the sliminess of David Schwimmer's character. His Band Of Brothers role is the only one I can remember in which he performed even better. Mili Avatal as Sam showed no warmth or sincerity, I'm sorry to say. This movie always leaves me wishing I had chosen another film to watch.

Dick
(1999)

Funny, especially if you're eating the cookies
The plot description was amusingly unbelievable, so I figured it was worth a try. The film was far funnier than I expected, and joyously absurd. If you know the basics of Watergate, you can tick through all of the elements which trigger recognition, and there are many. Loved the performances by Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams and Dan Hedaya, but not those of Ferrell and McCulloch. The music was GREAT! I loved hearing those old hits again. For me, Dick defies categorization beyond comedy. It wasn't romantic, wasn't really a teen flick, wasn't making any highbrow political statements, but all in all a good, entertaining film.

Herbstmilch
(1989)

Wonderfully realistic picture of the life
Not only is this an engaging story, this film also does a good job of depicting real life for the Bavarian farmer during the late 30's and the war. It's in the details: one big bowl of food on the table, being told not to eat so much so the pig has food as well, barefoot most of the time. This was an incredibly difficult life, yet we understand so little of the day-to-day activities. Beautiful, yet honest. I found the acting to be sensitive and moving. I'm looking forward to other films with Ms. Vavrova. It would have been nice to have the story be a little longer. There was more to tell, I suspect, in Albert's story, the last year of the war, and what happened to the people around Anna. Even what happened to the mother-in-law.
