Fast & Furious 7
(2015)

"One last ride"
One of the best action film that exists out there and definitely the best in the Furious series. With death defying stunts and terrific visuals, it is a match made in heaven for petrol-heads. From jumping cars off an aircraft to jumping between buildings in Abu Dhabi, it puts shivers down your spine! Rock pulling off his signature move to street fight between Vin Diesel and Jason Statham and yet one cannot get enough of the action. This is pure entertainment at its best. As if this wasn't enough, the tribute to Paul Walker in the end was emotional and the best thing about this film. He got a send-off that he deserved! Those last scenes cannot be emphasized enough upon. Overall it is the best action flick so far this year.

"Whether I'm a quarter mile away or halfway across the world, the most important people in the room are mi familia."

Kill the Messenger
(2014)

A true story
A true story based on an investigative journalist, Gary Webb, who exposed CIA's role in cocaine trade in the 80s inside USA to fund rebels in nicaragua, which congress had refused to fund. Film portrays events leading up to the story and the aftermath that he had to face for telling the truth. It shows how difficult it is to expose lies specially when it involves so called "national interest". Jeremy renner is rousing in his performance as the lead role and single handedly supports the film.

"Gary Webb: I thought my job was to tell the public the truth, the facts; pretty or not, and let the publishing of those facts make a difference in how people look at things, at themselves, and what they stand for..."

Kajaki
(2014)

True story
True story of British soldiers stuck in a minefield, where even a wrong step can mean death, after an accident during their deployment in Afghanistan. It is a honest endeavour into capturing the battle scene, neither is there any effort to exaggerate it neither to sentimentalize it, but only to show the reality. And it has no agenda, it doesn't debates on why they went into Afghanistan and whether it was right or wrong. It is free of glamour and glitz that we are accustomed to through big budget American war films and the agenda that they carry. According to experts it is horrifyingly authentic in its portrayal. This film brings to the screen the brutality of mines and one can't help but compare this with what our soldiers, of Pakistan army, have been experiencing in northern areas. A must see as it reminds us the bitter realities of war.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
(2014)

Short Review
It is a story about an actor Riggan (Michael Keaton) who is past his peak days. In his peak he used to play a superhero, Bridman. Now in his later years he regrets that he didn't validated himself as a true actor. To right his wrongs he acts in and directs a Broadway show. So the whole film revolves around that show, it feels more like a play than a film. It is a satirical commentary on the bombardment of superhero films in our age. Keaton's performance was outstanding, along with brilliant performances by Emma Stone and Edward Norton as supporting cast. The cinematography was fabulous given there are very few visible cuts. But even more so because of the long takes, which would reach upto 15 pages of dialogue at a time! The music score is also worth mentioning which is performed solely on drums.

The Skeleton Twins
(2014)

Short Review
The Skeleton Twins is a really good take on the sibling relationship. Reconnected after 10 years due to near suicide.

It portrays the ever lasting impact of a dysfunctional family, problematic childhood.

It is a drama-comedy so it has quite a few laughs that come from a dark narrative. As some say that secret to great comedy is that it comes from a dark place.

Nonetheless Bill Hader gives an outstanding performance along with another good performance by Kristen Wiig.

It is a watchable dramedy but not a must see.

The Theory of Everything
(2014)

Short Review
The Theory of Everything Movie is a biopic based on Stephen Hawking. Rather amusingly it focuses on his relationship with his first wife. Eddie Redmayne is phenomenal in his role. He really makes you believe that he is Hawking, such is the extent of his performance. Specially his simulation of motor neuron disease. Felicity Jones is also worth mentioning in her portrayal of his wife.

Definitely worth watching, but was a bit disappointed that it wasn't much about his work and science. And almost all of it is factually correct.

Redmayne is definitely in the running to win an Oscar tomorrow.

Whiplash
(2014)

Whiplash is about a young musician, Andrew aka Miles Teller, who wants to achieve greatness and he might be able to do that under his mentor, Fletcher aka J. K. Simmons.
Fletcher is relentless in his pursuit of pushing his apprentices to do more and more even up to the point of breaking them. Andrew is humiliated, verbally abused at, mentally exhausted, physically threatened, all for the purpose of making him achieve his full potential. To find the next big thing in Jazz music. Fletcher wont stop at anything less than perfect. The final performance is gripping, tension between Andrew and Fletcher at its peak, it can't be justified in a line. Fletcher: There are no two words in the English language more harmful than 'good job'. Its no wonder that it got 5 Oscar nominations. And J.K.Simmons chances of getting an Oscar are quite bright!
