The Peanut Butter Falcon
(2019)

I never, NEVER rate movies. This movie DEMANDS IT!
I didn't know what to expect from this movie, just knew that Shia has a good nose for scripts and the acting chops to fill any pair of boots asked of him.

This movie is overflowing with heart, with raw emotion and is an amazing study of interpersonal relationships that, for 99.9% of the time would never have a chance to exist.

All three of the main actors are stunningly real in their roles, they embrace the deep emotions that are so hard to show in film without coming off as contrived or cheesy and yet they do so effortlessly and convincingly.

But above all, this movie is INSANELY FUNNY. You might have gotten divorced in the morning, your dog was run over in the afternoon, but go see this movie in the evening and no matter how hard you try. You won't be able to stop yourself from CACKLING out loud.

This is a once in a generation movie, I guarantee you've never seen anything like it.

Do yourself a favor and see this movie with as many people as you can convince to come with you.

Another World
(2014)

Non-stop, Heart-pounding Zombie JOY!
I watched this movie originally because it's a zombie movie, and I love love love zombie movies (even bad ones aren't too hard to watch, for the most part). This movie DECIMATED my expectations; it was very well written (if a little too high-minded at parts for my taste, but still) and the cinematography was stellar with close action shots, overviews of battles, first-person bits dropped in (as another reviewer put it: you really felt like you were watching the events unfold in front of you).

The actors were well suited for their roles and played them well, I felt very little cheesiness factor in this movie. The enemy were as terrifying as any zombies I can think of (on par with the creatures from 28 Days Later, AT LEAST, and that is saying something), and the decisions made by the survivors were NEVER stupid, leaving you sitting there yelling at your screen because the characters pick the short-bus option. The fleshing out of these characters puts to shame every other zombie movie you've ever seen, and I will leave it at that so as not to give away any spoilers.

This movie was dark, very scary for a zombie flick (I turned it off for an hour about 1/3 of the way through because it got too scary, no joke) and had a distinct lack of holes in it over which to nitpick. Obviously, if I'm rating on IMDb I must love nitpicking (and I DO), but this film left me bereft of opportunities to. My hat is off to everyone involved in the making of this modern zombie masterpiece.

Enjoy this movie, they do not get made often.

Anti-Social
(2015)

By no means perfect, Anti-Social is a worthwhile watch
While another review on here claimed this to be a poor imitation of Snatch, they seem to have either never seen Snatch or never seen this movie. Snatch, a tongue in cheek look at a crazy unrealistic criminal underworld, was no doubt entertaining to the last drop. Anti-Social, on the other hand, carries a much darker undertone with it, including rape, tragic death of major characters, and the true, unrelenting realities faced by a modern armed robber. Anti-Social doesn't pull any punches and certainly does not glorify the lifestyle in any way whatsoever, instead contrasting it to the much safer (and, it could be argued, much more lucrative in the long- term) career of the street artist younger brother.

While I have to profess I was a little mystified at the ending, I can't say this movie wasn't worth my time or money. It was generally well acted, the events in it, however far-fetched some reviewers on here may believe them to be, are all ACTUAL events that have occurred in London over the past few years and the movie does an excellent job of putting a human face to the smash and grab robbers of the older brother's gang.

If you're looking for a laugh, keep looking, but if British crime films are your bag (as they certainly are mine) this movie will likely not disappoint.

Gravity
(2013)

Great Movie but Good God Sandra Bullock is Annoying
A fantastic movie, riveting from start to finish; this film has a great story, is intensely realistic, and the acting is... hard to put one's finger on. George Clooney kills it as usual playing the confident, charismatic alpha male role and fills his role well. Sandra Bullock on the other hand, grated on my nerves throughout, though I'm unsure if I should blame her or blame the writer for the portrayal of the surviving female astronaut as a clueless, whining, and petulant child. The absolute inability of her character to deal with reality as it arrives wave after wave is hard to watch at points.

That being said, this is a family-friendly film that is terrifying solely through the realistic portrayal of the harrowing situations a modern astronaut could still reasonably face while in orbit.

Act of Valor
(2012)

Blown away by IMDb's elitism once again!
Disclaimer on Author: Okay, just because this is such a charged subject and these forums are a grab bag of personalities, here's what I'm like: 28, white male, from Arizona and went to a tiny liberal arts college in LA. I'm a staunch Democrat and the saddest things I can remember happening in my lifetime match up pretty closely with a list of the Bush Administrations "accomplishments." I've never been a fan of our military's recruitment tactics or the blind patriotism that often accompanies a conversation concerning the armed forces. As for movies, I generally prefer high-minded dark comedies or spy thrillers as my genres of choice, and, though it may be cliché, most of my favorites DO fall in the AFI 100 or IMDb 100.

Having bored you with the above, to this WONDERFUL movie. To the complaints about acting: yes, there are maybe two scenes involving two of the not-actors-but-actual-US-Special-Forces-Operatives when they're speaking about their family in private where their lack of learned acting cues is apparent, but I would argue that ANY of the scenes in this movie are 100x more "real" than any such equivalent in the history of Hollywood. Oh also, boo-hoo, you didn't this film stood up to Sophie's Choice? Did you expect it to? How well SHOULD our Navy SEALs be able to fake small talk on camera, anyone? Moving on...

If you're normal and you enjoy action movies on any level whatsoever, you will LOVE this movie. And not just for the action or the plot or the rad shots (all I have to say is river and minigun), but also for the naked realism. The plot (shot from both sides of the conflict and in like 4-5 languages, no idea what movie the "one-sided" lunatics were watching) is excellent because it's anything but slow and yet is literally step-for-step as real a representation of a future terror attempt on U.S. soil as you will ever see at the movie theater. The choices made by the terrorists in this movie are based off of real-life intelligence analyses that identify actual such glaring holes in our borders and intelligence.

Oh, and then there's.... the action. Ever wonder how real a Hollywood commando is? Watch this, find out. See what ACTUALLY goes on in the real world when you read a story about a terrorist killed in another country. Though the briefings for each mission were unrealistically short and brief to a fault, this is easily forgiven for how much detail and thought is put into the action sequences of this movie. It pulls of Hollywood "Wow" with a sort of surreal unbelievability, because you realize what you're seeing HAS HAPPENED.

I watch a thousand movies a week and few ever strike me as this one did. Riveting story, immaculate camera-work, attention to the tiniest of minutiae, and some seriously great acting considering THESE MEN KILL TERRORISTS FOR A LIVING AND ARE NOT PAID TO ACT IMDb (sorry new reader, it's these people, you gotta understand).

This is NOT a recruitment video, despite what some lower-hanging fruits on this thread may say. If, after watching this movie, you're of the opinion that people will WANT to go put their lives on the line as these guys do in the movie, then you really need to stay off your cellphone during the film because see... you missed some parts where it totally sucked to be anyone even related to these guys. Or when they die (which, spoiler, they do, but not all of them of course).

So, to wrap up, this is a well thought out, HIGHLY realistic and detailed take on what a modern mission might look like for a SEAL team on call. All SEALs in the movie are also SEALs in real life. These men are integral to telling the story, and as one would expect, the movie comes from the point of view that the team's actions in the film and in general are noble in cause. THIS is where I believe the low-low IMDb rating and trash talk on these forums comes from.

SOME of those on the far left in our country sometimes find even the faintest scent of patriotism akin to calls for a new American fascist regime. So, I'd say many didn't like this because the producers didn't for example, explain why/how the Chechen terrorist was radicalized and turned against the US only after being wronged himself, or rather how he is a human at his heart and not just some cookie cutter bad guy. But any reasonable person would already know this. Most people bright enough to read this deep into a movie review probably have a sense of the world greater than you're given credit for. It's OK, no matter what all these crazies say, I trust you to watch this movie alone. You won't go sign up for 4 tours in Afghanistan the next day, I PROMISE. In fact, to ANYONE who called this movie "propaganda," I'll pay you $1,000 to find me ONE person who joined the military as a result of seeing this movie. Or hell, who has, before this point CLAIMED to join because of this film. Such utter nonsense, garbage like that is why so many people flee this website, I wish IMDb would just offer a moron filter for my searches.....

Good job, you finished!!!

Cocaine Angel
(2006)

May as well be a docu-drama of the hollowed out life of a user
I watched this film on a recommendation for its gritty portrayal of a cocaine addict and the people met during the descent. As real a depiction of actual a. drug usage b. user habits c. desperate, unimaginable situations that HAPPEN and d. the mental pattern of someone who recognizes what they gave up to have it.

As is mentioned in most reviews, some scenes are heart-wrenching, some are of graphic drug use (as graphic as drug use gets), a lot are both. This is a sad movie and it's filled with sad, pathetic characters. All are acted to PERFECTION, including most of the bit parts. The lead is astonishingly good at being a cokehead and displays constantly the little things that change about one's speech and thoughts as they lose touch with reality. If you've known a cokehead, you will watch this movie and say "a-ha, I remember why I hated that guy".

With a tragic antihero on camera in every scene of the movie, this is a very personal affair and shows everything he might do in a day (including using the toilet, random, meaningless encounters, etc.). I've yet to see a movie that spent this few words expressing this much personality (or ruins of one, really).

I thought the ending was particularly good and fit the story well as far as it parallels real life stories, as what you see in the last few scenes is what you're expected to believe is the main character's final stage in life (and presumably, not a particularly long one, depending entirely on what you think this man will do when he wakes the following day, which on its own is reason enough to watch this movie).

While someone else mentioned recovering users might have trouble watching this film, it is NOT because of the graphic drug use, it IS because they will be steadily reminded of the consequences of their own past use, which sucks, but is about as good a booster shot for not-ever-doing-drugs-againism as one could ask for. Enjoy...

Shame
(2011)

The #1 Review Nailed It, Here's Why
This film DOES take some thinking to enjoy. I found myself mulling what I'd seen in the previous scene well into the next scene, and multiple times throughout the movie. While this is not "HE IS NOW (EMOTION)" spray-painted on the wall for the audience, I can't think of a single scene in this film that would leave anyone with unanswered questions by its end, if anything, I thought McQueen tipped his cards a little farther than he maybe wanted to, simply for the sake of a broader enjoyment by audiences.

This was one of the most technically well-made films I can remember seeing and appreciating all at one time (I just finished watching this). So, to repeat, if you like any subtlety at all in films, this one is worth watching just for its grace and grace done with lots of power. While I didn't find the premise particularly intriguing, I am so glad I decided to see this, I'm flabbergasted that anyone would drop this film in the shallow/underdeveloped category, these characters are neither question marks nor paragons of humanity, just people living like people would if cameras WEREN'T filming them (i.e. neither character needs to say what happened previously, cus you know, logically, they both were there and kiiiiinda remember it. /sarcasm towards IMDb trolls) Oh, and also, don't see this movie with your mother.
