The Shallows
(2016)

Oh no they didn't
As far as it goes this is a good way to waste a couple of hours. Some good action, some very tense moments, lots of blood. Most of the blood is Ms Lively's but hey, it's her show. Not a horror in any real sense, too much of the horrific stuff was hinted at and not shown. This was a movie that engaged me right up until the end when the shark was killed. Looked like something out of SharkTales or Looney Toons, completely blew the whole suspension of disbelief and reminded me that this was just another movie. Lost its whole score at that point and only gained a 6 because the rest just about made up for it. The sharks death was where this movie "jumped the shark".

100 Vaginas
(2019)

Well worth a look.
One woman's journey of discovery while photographing 100 different vaginas, including her own. The women in this documentary give a very honest, forthright and down to earth view of how they feel about their own sexuality and bodies. The range of topics covered is amazing, with no holds barred. If you're looking for a cheap thrill, forget it, but well worth a look if you can handle the truth.

Bright
(2017)

Almost, but not quite.
This is a decent enough movie, there's plenty of action, enough bad guys for two or three movies and a pleasant way to spend an hour and a half. But.

And it's a big "but". This is the flatest, most two dimentional movie I've seen in years. There was no depth, no urgency, no real sense of the magic that was supposed to be at the heart of the story. The jokes were flat, the color pallet was almost monochromatic, in fact the whole film was handled in such a heavy handed way that it had all the subtly of two walrus' fighting.

Watch it, yes. Enjoy it for what it is, but mourn for the missed opportunity that this film is.

Bram Stoker's Dracula
(1992)

Boring
I only vote a "1" for movies that I get so bored with that I don't finish watching. For only being a 2 hour movie, it seem SO much longer.

The pacing was so slow I thought that the film might grow algae before it finished! The characters were gad, the storyline was bad. Gary Olman as Dracula just didn't work, and Anthony Hopkins didn't seem to be interested in his role as van Helsing , overall, just bad. The shame is, they are two actors I have a lot of respect for.

I am a big fan of the Horror genre and have seen many truly horrible horror movies. Without fail, I have managed to find some redeeming feature in all of them. All that is, except this one. It doesn't even have the benefit of being so bad as to be funny! Seriously, don't watch this movie, it stinks!

Doom
(2005)

Could have been better!
So, we have another "video game to movie" movie. And "The Rock" is playing a bad guy? OK, I liked the game, I'll give the movie a go.

The best I can say is that it wasn't a complete waste of time, as far as it went it was a fun little monster-fest. The Rock did a credible job as The Sarge, but his transition from plain old Grunt to bad guy was a little heavy handed. One minute he's "kickin' ass and taking' names", the next he's shooting everything that moves, good bad or indifferent.

I did like the monster make-up and FX, they did look pretty cool, and the "first person shooter" sequence was an excellent reminder of the movies origins. By far Karl Urban as Grimm was the star of this movie.

The movie is fun, but the story is a little weak and very predictable. Don't expect too much with this, except to while away an evening and not feel like time is wasted. Enjoy it for what it is, guys killing monsters with BFG's!
