A Single Man
(2009)

Highly symbolic
This film is great, really top-notch stuff.

Some people, walking into this film may think that its just a story about gay rights and that these ideologies will be forced down your throats, but its anything but.

This is not a film about human rights, it is a film about loss. I felt very moved at times by what the characters were facing.

A Single Man, is set in 1960's Los Angeles, in which a man who has recently lost his boyfriend decides to 'change it all' during the course of one day. Throughout this day we see his sadness, his happiness and the honesty of his poetic mind.

Colin Firth delivers a great performance, dancing between total bluntness and depression, yet still managing to produce a few laughs.

The chemistry between Matthew Goode and Colin Firth is really well done, the audience really begins to care about the two as a couple, yet they know that its only a flashback.

Juliane Moore is also good in her role, same goes to Nicholas Hault,

Tom Ford's direction is really well done, making the audience feel as though Colin Firth's character would.

The cinematography is noticeable, in that their are many symbolic elements seen throughout. However this can get a bit annoying, almost as if it were being shoved in the audiences face that 'this is good' or 'this is deeply meaningful'.

But all in all, I did enjoy this film, and it slightly bothers me that this is Tom Ford's only film, as he has great potential.

Wo hu cang long
(2000)

More than you would think
This film is... a lot of things.

I can spend paragraphs using positive adjectives to describe my affection for this film, but alas, my reviewing skills are lame and without proper practice.

Ang Lee had a story on his hands and he knew how to tell it. The film is so beautiful and so engrossing for the audience that I really cared and related to the characters.

Everything from the score, to the costuming beautifully demonstrates and sets the scene of a feudal China. The characters are so larger than life, which is so great because I really felt that this element brought out the best of the story, it was so epic!!!

The fight scenes, whilst almost comical (the gliding aspect that is) were effective and really tense, this film also boasts one of the coolest chase scenes I have ever seen.

The dialogue is so well spoken by the characters and their poetic elegance far surpasses my expectations of this masterpiece.

A truly awesome film! If you only see a couple foreign or Chinese films in your lifetime, make Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon one of them!

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon= 9.8

The Wire
(2002)

Most well thought out show I have seen
I recently purchased all five seasons of the wire and watched all the episodes over a month and a half period. Money and time well spent.

The Wire is about the drug scene and Baltimore. Its as simple as that. Throughout the five seasons we get to see all walks of life in the detailing as to why the drug problem is so consistent. We see both the 'bad' guys who run the drug enterprise and the 'good' guys who try to stop them. We see stick up-men, lawyers, Mayors, police of all sorts, addicts, kids caught in the thick of it all of the character types that could get affected in real life are shown in this show.

There are many well developed characters in the show, that's the thing that I thought the show did really well, the creators never discarded anything from previous seasons, they would sometimes bring back characters the viewer had all but forgot about.

You really can't imagine how hard it was for the writers to write these characters stories in a way that seems relevant to the plot, it would be so convoluted and confusing, but as a credit to David Simon the show is really easy to watch.

The Wire is a fantastic show, some realistic dialogue, masterful character performances (Andre Royo, Wendell Pierce) just to mention a few and the social commentary that invokes lots of thought and opinion, which is what I think Simon would have liked to see.

No episode is boring, no episode is irrelevant, just a good top-notch crime drama of which its originality we may never see the likes of again. Certainly one of my favourite shows of all time.

The Wire= 10/10

Tonari no Totoro
(1988)

Cute
This film is pretty much one of Hayao Miyazaki's most original pieces of work as it is so genuinely magical. Not being a child, I'm not sure if children would like this film as it can be slow paced. However I enjoyed the film because it was such a great avenue for imagination that it almost felt like I was in the shoes of the two little girls and discovering the things about the place they live in. This is a great film to reflect upon after watching, however not so great whilst watching it. As mentioned before it was almost boring at the start, but then the characters are introduced to a brilliant mythical world that ensures entertainment. A thing that was surprising about this film was how emotionally connected I felt to the characters and the situation with their ill mother, this ability to find an emotional link is what makes Studio Ghibl films so enjoyable and unique. And above all this movie is very cute in almost all aspects.

My Neighbor Totoro= 7.8

Strangers on a Train
(1951)

"I admire people who do things"
From this line said by Bruno (Robert Walker) I was hooked to the story and the dialogue.

The story is simple, a crazed sociopath (Bruno, played by Robert Walker) meets with a tennis star (Guy Haines played by Farley Granger) on a train as 'strangers', here Bruno reveals his plan for a perfect murder in which two complete strangers can 'switch' murders in order to avoid suspicion. Little does Guy know that this is a plan that Bruno intends to enact.

The dialogue is wonderful in this film, the most entertaining aspect probably for me, this being no surprise of course as the scriptwriter is the wonderful Raymond Chandler. Probably the best thing about it for me was the way dark humor was implemented so carefully.

Of course, this being a Hitchcock film, the direction is masterful, an original shot in each scene, so many hidden treats for the audience to decipher.

The film's finale is also very riveting and thrilling.

The performance by Farley Granger felt a little forced at times, however this is not a major problem. Ruth Roman was really great in her role as Guy's girlfriend Anne.

However the best performer is easily Robert Walker. One of the most coolest and disturbing villains of the noir-type and in fact the entirety of the film universe. The way his image is haunting and his ability to turn up everywhere Guy is proves to be a well handled driving force for the film. And he also manages to be devilishly funny at the same time.

All in all a great film, one of Hitchcocks finest, most riveting pieces of work.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
(2007)

When the actors become the characters...
I wasn't expecting much in the way of the entertainment factor when going into this film, considering its run time, however the performances of all the actors, namely Pitt, Affleck and Rockwell, assure that the pacing can be viewed as relevant to the character development.

When we are first introduced to infamous American outlaw Jesse James it is brought to us in an intimate setting and full understanding of the character. The poetical narration adds to the biographical style the movie feels like.

Put in a beautiful, yet unsettling score, some beautiful uses of cinematography and you have yourself a brilliant film.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford= 9.4

North by Northwest
(1959)

This thought has crossed our minds
What if it were us against the world? What if one day we were to find that we were rogues on the run from people who are telling us that we are rogues on the run? I've imagined this scenario many times and Hitchcock nows how to tell it better than any.

This is one of the first great thrillers, so many twists, so many turns that the viewer could miss the clues to vital information very easily so assure that you pay attention to both the primary things and the secondary things.

There is really not much more to say about this film without revealing too much apart from Cary Grant giving another great performance as the guy on the run.

There is some great, cheesy and surprisingly witty pieces of dialog in here and by the films conclusion everything is pieced together neatly.

North By Northwest= 8.5/10

21 Grams
(2003)

Acting masterclass
I don't know how Alejandro González Iñárritu did it but he was able to not only get one, nor two, but three great performances out of his leads. Naomi Watts, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro are examples of how well good actors/ actresses can collaborate when they are giving the write material and the right direction.

The film starts of a little confusing for the audience, not much is revealed because of the non- chronological way the story is told. For the first 20-30 minutes I found myself guessing and grasping at which event takes place when and where. However, for me at least, this made the experience even more enjoying, being able to piece these puzzle together.

By the second act of the film we get a look into the character's lives, so without spoiling anything critical let me start by saying that Naomi Watts's character, Christina Peck is a woman with a troubled past involving drug addiction, married with children. Benicio Del Toro's character, Jack Jordan, is an ex-con who aims to reform himself through Jesus and God. Sean Penn's character, Paul RIvers, is a mathematician whose wife is trying to get pregnant whilst he has only a short time to live. These three entities are brought together by, as quoted in the plot summary above 'a freak/ tragic accident'.

The situation's these characters are placed in are tense, to say the least, however. where the director's skill is shown is the way in which he draws away from the tension and rather focuses on the character's emotions and sometimes in the most unlikely situations, makes us feel sympathy for them. It's in those subtle, noiseless moments where the audience is really able to care for the characters. Don't get me wrong though, this film has moments were you will get edgy on your seat.

This film isn't for everybody as it will be confusing at first and some people will find this off- putting. However, I urge you to watch this film, as the character's learn about their hardships we also learn more and more about the directors message.

And also from a technical point of view this film isn't bad either, there are some great camera angles and some great usages of cinematography with symbolism. The sound effects during one particular scene are very notable as effective.

Batman: Arkham City
(2011)

wow
The first time i played Batman Arkham Asylum i could not wait for the sequel. And after playing Batman Arkham City, i can safely say that it is the best superhero game ever. The plot is perfect, the scenery is perfect, the game play is perfect. You could tell that the creators improved on the detective aspect of the game massively. (Meaning that you don't have to spend as much time in detective mode.) The characters are well introduced and every character has a vital part to play in the plot. The voices for the characters were well suited (Mark Hamill giving another astounding performance as the joker.) But i have to say, the thing i loved most about the game was the additional things, the side missions were great and the Riddler trophies, though challenging, were fun to do. I recommend this game to anyone who either enjoys Batman or a quality game.
