Greyhound
(2020)

Majority of the dialog was about coordinates... disappointing!
As the title points out, the biggest issue for me was that the majority of the dialog was coordinates! Because of this, there was no compelling story to keep me on the edge of my seat. Granted, this is a war movie so I wasn't expecting too much, but I couldn't even tell you the names of anyone 5 minutes after watching this. I guess I was hoping it would be similar to "Das Boot" which spent more time with the characters, but that movie was also 3-4x longer. I think if they extended this movie by 30 minutes for character development, it would've been much better.

I'm sure if you served in the Navy, you would probably enjoy this way more than me though.

Sebastian Maniscalco: Stay Hungry
(2019)

A Few Good Skits
It was decent but there was quite a few bits about the pregnancy that I didn't care for about halfway through. The bits about exercising, the gas station, and Home Depot were his best parts. These occurred at the beginning and end so it wasn't a very consistent experience for me. He seemed to really start getting into it at the end, but then it justseems to end because of the time limit. I recommend watching it with lower expectations.

Blade Runner 2049
(2017)

A great film to put you asleep
This film took me weeks to finish. It may be visually appealing, but that's about it. Everything goes at half speed and the story isn't interesting enough to keep you awake. Had they cut this down to a 1 hour 45 minute movie, I think it would be much better because there is just so much unnecessary filler. "Hey, it's time to transition to the next scene, here's a 5 minute panoramic view of the scenery before we get into the dialogue." I'm exaggerating a little bit there, but it's what it feels like throughout the entire film. I thought the original movie was ok, but I don't think it needed an almost 3 hour sequel.

Darkest Hour
(2017)

Don't expect a history lesson
While watching this film, I was glued to the screen. Everything from the opening title screen showing Hitler and his army, Gary Oldman's acting, the speeches, the costumes and setting... were all superb! But then after the film ends, there will be something in your brain that tells you to do some fact checking. There is one scene in particular which I guarantee that you will look up and be extremely disappointed that it never happened. Then after checking that fact, you will soon realize there are many other historical facts that were portrayed wrong in the film.

I had given this film a 9/10 until I did further research. I definitely don't regret watching it, but I was hoping for a more accurate portrayal since this is a "Biography" after all. If anything, this film will get you interested into reading more about Winston Churchill once you realize how inaccurate it is. The only reason to watch this film is for Gary Oldman's acting and the wonderful costume designs/setting.

The Cloverfield Paradox
(2018)

I Was Entertained, But Confused
The majority of the movie takes place in space and it has that Alien meets Star Trek feel going for it. The first half of the movie was amazing, I was glued to the screen! Then afterwards, things start getting really weird and you have to wrap your mind around what is going on. There are so many questions that pop up, but are left un-answered. If you are hoping that this movie will focus on what is happening on the ground, you will be disappointed. 95% of the movie takes place in space. Overall, it was a decent movie but it didn't really feel like Cloverfield.

Uranium: Twisting the Dragon's Tail
(2015)

This review is based on episode 1 only
The show starts off promising, going over how Uranium was founded as well as it's properties. But then the it starts going off on its' destructive power. There was too much of that "Unleashing the Dragons Tail" nonsense going on. I was really hoping for more of an informative documentary, not some mythical tale. Towards the end of episode 1, he repeated way too much about what happened in Hiroshima. It sounded like it started to get too political. I then read the summaries of the next two episodes and knew exactly where it was going, so I decided to cut it off here.

Overall - Starts off promising, but then gets too mythical for me.

A Night at the Opera
(1935)

I tried to like it...
This movie is in the AFI Top 100 movies of all time so I decided to give it a go. I unfortunately was rather bored watching it. The most memorable part of the movie was the piano and harpsichord scene. It had the comedy in the beginning and then drifted toward some beautiful harpsichord playing. The transition was perfectly executed in that scene.

The rest of the movie fell flat however. A lot of the comedy doesn't hold up too well nowadays and there was too much singing. I'm not a fan of opera singing in the first place and it you are like that too, you may get annoyed. The story was alright but it had a cheesy ending. It was so cheesy, that it was actually one of the few times that I laughed (even though you weren't supposed to).

Overall - Wouldn't recommend this film nowadays, especially for the younger generation. Charlie Chaplin's films has comedy that holds up better than this one. I have no doubt it was good for it's time, but some films just do not age too well.

Great Raids of World War II
(2006)

A very informative and intriguing series
I found this series to be really interesting. If the idea of a small groups of soldiers going behind enemy lines and changing the face of the war sounds interesting to you, then you will enjoy this. The series does a great job at explaining what is going on in the world before it dives into the actual raid. It is still important to have a general understanding of WWII before you watch this though, as you may be a bit lost at times. Each episode is only 23 min long, but it does a great job at being very informative in such a small time-span. The narration is excellent and the re-enactments along with actual footage flow really well together. It also has interviews from soldiers who actually took part in the missions. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough/didn't have more episodes!

Also, if you are going to watch only one episode, the Cockleshell Raiders is by far the best episode.

The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler
(2012)

A bit repetitive and has annoying bursts of music, but still a decent watch
As someone who isn't an expert in WWII and has just recently became interested in the topic, I found this to be very informative. It did seem to drag on at times (especially the last episode), but it was worth it as I left knowing much more about Hitler than I did before. I was a bit disappointed at how misleading the title was however. They don't really go too deep into his personality but instead just showed a few speeches he did and gave a quick reason why it connected to the audience. It's really more about the rise and downfall of Hitler, not an in-depth analysis of his charisma. It seemed like a tacky thing they tried to plug in to try to differentiate it from all of the other documentaries on Hitler.

The footage they showed was rather interesting. They did have some cheesy re-enactments that weren't necessary, but it was more of a background thing so I wasn't too upset. The music however, was rather obnoxious at times. They played the same music between their transitions that would blast for a few seconds. It was rather over the top at times.

Another thing I disliked, was that the series seems to repeat itself. Episode 3 repeated so much from episode 2, that I thought I was watching episode 2 again on accident for the first 10 min. They also throw in their charisma "analysis" which gets repeated over and over but doesn't add too much.

Overall it is a decent watch, especially for those who are beginning to learn more about WWII. You won't learn a lot about Hitler, but it gives a decent overview of the rise and fall of him. I do understand why WWII buffs would be disappointed in this however.

Stranger Things: Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister
(2017)
Episode 7, Season 2

Could've been integrated into a "normal" episode
I have no clue why they had to branch off from their successful formula of jumping from one plot line to another during an episode. Why they decided to dedicate an entire episode to number 11 is beyond me. This episode is also one of the most poorly executed episodes of the entire series. It is filled with the most cliché characters and is also riddled with terrible acting. Number 11 simply cannot hold an entire episode on her own. Her character is just not "entertaining" enough at this moment. Hearing someone say a complicated word and then hearing her repeat the word gets annoying also (minor gripe). I felt like they could've cut it down to 15 minutes.

Overall, I guarantee you will lose focus halfway through the episode. You will browse your phone as the show is playing, wondering why this was included in the series. Yes, there are some important parts, but it's not worth a painful 45 min. of my time.

Icon: Al Capone - Profession: Gangster
(2014)
Episode 1, Season 1

Underrated Documentary
Not sure how this has a 6.6/10 here on IMDb, but I found this to be a wonderful Documentary. I did feel it was a tad too short and they didn't go into too much detail, but this really gives you an overall picture of who this man was and how he influenced America. They did also have some interesting imagery that I've never seen before and the commentary from the cast also adds a lot. Even if you know everything about Al Capone, I think you will find yourself entertained watching this.

Spider-Man: Homecoming
(2017)

Thought this was Spiderman, not a PG-13 Deadpool Knockoff
It felt like a Deadpool knockoff, except Deadpool was actually funny. What a joke they have turned Spiderman into and a huge slap in the face to fans of the original trilogy with Tobey Maguire. Tom Holland (who plays this Spiderman) is a complete joke in this film. I can't tell if it's bad acting or terrible script writing, but it just didn't work. Jacob Batalon (Spiderman's friend) was the only thing that saved this film from being a disaster. He plays his role so well and is a huge relief after dealing with Tom Holland's horrible attempt at comedy.

The first thing that will strike you, is the fact that there was no backstory into how he became Spiderman. This takes a lot away from the movie. But then again, this was a comedy, not a drama so I might be wrong in that department. The next thing that will catch your eye is the terrible CGI. Spiderman bounces around the screen completely weightless. Moving on to the story, the love interest in this didn't feel real at all. Again, there was no backstory to what sparked them to start noticing each other. I also found it funny when the students started hating on Peter Parker for the dumbest of all reasons. There were so many cringe worthy moments with that as well as the love interest. The main story line with the villain and Iron Man was decent though. A few small twists here and there but mostly predictable. There is only so much you can do with a Super-Hero movie when sequels are inevitable and the actors want to play the same roles in the next movie for extra money.

Overall, I'm shocked that this is listed as Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi and not listed as Comedy on IMDb. The comedy in this is horrendous with Jacob Batalon single-handily saving the movie. Maybe if you are 13, you will enjoy this movie. I had high hopes when watching this, but I found out it was gone 5 minutes after Spiderman was introduced in the film.

Becoming Bond
(2017)

A hilarious and touching story
Watched this late at night expecting fully to fall asleep halfway through. Well that didn't happen. Ended up watching the whole thing! The re-enactments of his story was very well done and had the perfect touch of comedy to it that made it hilarious. It wasn't over the top hilarious, but just enough to keep you interested in the story. His life was also rather interesting to hear about. There were so many things that I never knew about him. This exceeded my expectations and so therefore, I'm giving it a 10. One of the most entertaining Biography's I have seen. This is a must see for any James Bond fan.

Carlito's Way
(1993)

A must see for fans of Scarface
I never even knew this film existed until recently. This film is vastly underrated and is on par, if not better than Scarface. The two films blend so well together, but yet offer a unique viewing experience for each film. It was nice seeing familiar faces in Carlito's Way coming from Scarface. The standout of this film however, has to be Sean Penn. His acting was so brilliant that without him, the film would've suffered quite a bit. In fact, his acting was so well done that the Grand Theft Auto series made a character based off of him (Ken Rosenberg). Just go out and watch it if you enjoy movies like Scarface, you won't be disappointed.

Hacksaw Ridge
(2016)

Decent story, poor execution, laughable battle scenes
The film is split into 3 parts: The romance/backstory, boot-camp, and the actual war. The romance part was the most cheesy thing I have seen. I get that it's hard to really encapsulate romance in short amount of time, but they could of at least done a little better. Still, the buildup was decent enough to keep my attention. The second part of the movie was probably the best part. I won't spoil too much, but there was a lot going on that made it interesting. I will say that this part was a little too religious for me, but I knew that going into the movie. Now on to the actual battle part of the movie, this is honestly the worst depiction of battle I have seen. I felt like I was watching a cartoon for some reason. The actual battle map is the most ridiculous thing ever as well. One rope ladder? Are you serious? None of it was believable. It had the potential to be something, but they went for the Hollywood glorification. This is laughable compared to the battles in Saving Private Ryan. There was one scene where the main character was pulling a character on some sort of make-shift sled and the injured soldier was shooting and mowed down like 5 people. Not realistic at all. There is no emotional involvement in this film because the scenes made it so cheesy.

Baby Driver
(2017)

Was expecting more
I went in this movie not knowing anything about it other than the fact that it was probably going to be a bank robbery type of movie. Now it had that, but it was simplified. The action scenes had a comedic aspect to them that just didn't feel right to me along with a lot of action happening behind closed doors. It does make sense since he is a driver and can't see what's going on, but there was one scene where the camera purposefully gets out of the way so we can't see. It really takes out the suspense in everything, which would've added a whole lot more to the movie.

This movie could've been so much more had they not gone the comedic route. Unfortunately though, nothing was believable because of that. You have cops coming out of nowhere and action scenes that are unrealistic. I guess a big mistake of mine is comparing it to the movie Heat, because that's what I was expecting from what little I knew. It was still a decent movie with an interesting story, but it falls short because it resorted to comedy for the action sequences. If you go in not expecting Heat or A Dog Day Afternoon, you may enjoy it slightly more than me.

SpongeBob SquarePants
(1999)

Seasons 1-3 are the best
After that, the show went off a cliff because Hillenburg left. Seasons 4+ have Spongebob and Patrick Star being completely dumb as well as somehow becoming violent. The characters looks/animation style also changed drastically. Maybe it's just my nostalgia kicking in, but I really hate the way they look now. It's got an overly childish look to them.

Season 1 is easily the best though. The animation style made this great. For some reason, it just adds so much humor to it because it's not over the top. The episodes with Patrick Star seem to be the ones I gravitate towards the most. He adds so much comedy to the episodes, which is why at age 25 I still watch them. Bubblestand, Opposite Day, Jellyfishing, Texas, and Hooky being my favorite episodes from that season.

Season 2 is the second best season. This one has a slightly different animation style, but it still stays true to the looks of the characters from season 1. You get a lot more variety in this season, but as an older adult I still tend to gravitate towards the episodes with Patrick. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III, Wormy, Survival of the Idiots, Band Geeks, The Secret Box, and Sailor Mouth are my personal favorites.

Season 3 was decent. Plenty of classic episodes in this one. For some reason I found Spongebob to be slightly annoying in this season. Not sure if they were trying too hard or what. Club Spongebob, Mermaid Man And Barnacle Boy IV, Chocolate with Nuts, and Wet Painters were my favorites.

Overall, when re-watching these as an adult, the Episodes with Patrick and/or Squidward in them tend to be the best. The ones that focus on Spongebob (without the aid of Squidward and Patrick) or Plankton tend to be hard to watch when you get older. Also, don't bother watching any season after 3.

The Avengers
(2012)

Finally got around to watching it after 5 years...
This is one of the most overrated movies I have seen. I'm not much of a superhero fan, but I did enjoy Spiderman 1, 2, and 3 as well as Ironman. I've never seen Thor or Captain America so I know I'm missing a little backstory, but I doubt it would add a lot to the experience in this movie. The story was sub-par and very predictable. There is also no sense of danger whatsoever since these superheroes are near invincible, which is why I tend to avoid superhero movies. Action scenes are therefore boring because you know the outcome 99/100 times. I laugh at why they even bother shooting guns at these guys. Do they really expect us to be on the edge of our seats? Yes, the visuals are decent but that's not what makes a movie. When comparing this film to Guardians of the Galaxy, it's no contest. GotG had drama, humor (that wasn't forced), a decent story, and fantastic visuals. If you are a Marvel fan, you will probably like this film simply because you love the characters. I was looking for something other than mindless action and unfortunately I did not get that.

Desk Set
(1957)

Not that great
I'm a young male that decided to watch this movie at random. This seems to be geared towards older ladies. Now I typically enjoy older movies, but this film just did not seem to age very well. It did have a few memorable scenes so I don't regret watching it, but I wouldn't recommend this movie however.

City Lights
(1931)

The best silent film out there
You're probably deciding to watch this because it's in the Top 250 movies of all time. Let me tell you that it totally deserves its spot at #25 for Top Rated English Movies. I'm not a huge fan of Charlie Chaplin or silent movies in general, but this one surprised me. It was funny, but yet had a serious tone at the same time. My only wish is that the ending would've had more to it. It wasn't a bad ending by any means, I think it's just me wanting to see more since the movie was so good. Just do yourself a favor and watch it already!

Dunkirk
(2017)

Critics must've been paid big time... Giant disappointment
I have no idea why critics seem to enjoy this movie and I have no clue how this has an 8.5/10 (at the time of writing) on IMDb. I hope this is eventually corrected upon DVD release. This movie did have fantastic visuals and amazing sound, but I don't go to movies just for that. I need some sort of character development, which this movie offered none. The characters also looked very similar, so you tend to get confused at times. They try to get you to care if someone dies, but you just aren't attached to them so you won't care if they do die. They also talk about grand scale, but there is no grand scale here. Now, I know very little about Dunkirk, but I'm pretty sure there were hundreds of thousands of people. This film seems so small compared to that number.

I get that the film maker wanted to put you at the center of the action to appreciate the grand scale, but it doesn't seem to work here. You may as well play a WWII video game instead of watching this movie. Honestly, this would've been better if it were a History Documentary instead. At least in that case, you would've learned a lot more with awesome visuals.

Joking aside, I've actually never been so close to walking out halfway through a movie before. You will leave underwhelmed, or in my case, I was angry that I got duped by the critics.

5 Headed Shark Attack
(2017)

Title Says it All
You know this movie is going to be ridiculous before you decide watching it. It's that kind of movie that you watch just to laugh at, sort of like Sharknado.

Pros:

  • Hot girls

  • Hilarious shark attacks

  • Hilarious looking shark

Cons:

  • Acting is terrible

  • CGI is bad obviously. I mean, why would anyone spend a crap ton of money making a realistic looking 5 headed shark.

  • No connection to characters at all. They make poor attempts to try to get you to not want someone to die.

  • Attack scenes are very drawn out. When the shark is swimming, it makes it seem like it's going super fast and close, but then the camera cuts to the people and it's somehow not even close to them.

John Wick: Chapter 2
(2017)

Great Action, Lackluster Plot
Positives: This movie had awesome action scenes. A bit over the top in some parts, but this is John Wick so that was expected. The location and scenery was absolutely spectacular. It also had some humor in it, more so than the first.

Negatives: Lacked the emotion from the first film (won't go into detail because of spoilers). The plot line also got confusing at times. It wasn't as straight forward as the first film.

Overall: Don't go in expecting a drama/action movie like the first one had. Go in expecting awesome fight scenes with a little comedy here and there.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
(2014)

Review from someone who didn't read the book
An Unexpected Journey was decent but during the Desolation of Smaug, I could notice a sharp decline in quality and things began to really drag out. The Battle of Five Armies continues that trend. The CGI that is used in the battle scenes are absolutely terrible, which I'm sure you noticed in the first two films. However, there is a battle scene that is absurdly long. There is no sense of danger whatsoever. It's almost like they are fighting on the moon, weightless. The orcs pose no threat at all! And that Azog character, what a joke! Not only does he look like a cartoon character, his role is so stupid! There's also so many new devices that the orcs use in battle that we don't see in the LOTR Trilogy... they really catered to the kids in this trilogy.

The only good thing about this trilogy is that it pretty much forces you to go and watch the LOTR Trilogy again just to make up for this.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1
(2014)

Watchable
The film is more like a 6.5 but I decided to round up. Hollywood could have combined this film and the next Mockingjay (when it comes out) by adding maybe an extra 15-20 minutes in the beginning. There was so much filler in this movie, it was ridiculous. I was however, somewhat entertained throughout the movie even though there wasn't much action. It was probably the fact that the acting was decent. The one thing that will annoy you is Jennifer's whining in this movie.

If you can watch it for free, you may as well (currently on Amazon Prime Video) otherwise I would not pay money to see it. You won't walk away amazed. You pretty much have to watch this in order to see the last one anyways, which is supposedly going to have lots of action (according to those who read the book). I refused to pay money so I waited so long to see this one because of the fact they split it up to make more money.
